Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

41 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Outcome without a verified action link

It's a snorkel effect but still not as aggressive sounding as the Sport Exhaust modification IMO.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm a little disappointed by the exhaust sound on my stock '99 996. I only got the car a few months ago and I love the car and the performance. However the exhaust sound simply doesn't do the car justice and based on all the forum topics related to this it seems to be a common observation. I live on a Caribbean Island, and am lucky to drive 20 miles a day, so I don't really want to do the full $5000 exhaust replacement job. Instead I was thinking of getting the Fister modified muffles along with an air intake kit. Is this combination likely to give me a nice noise boost and if not what else should I consider? Thanks.

POST 2Original post

Fabspeed generally gives you pretty good bang for your buck at about $2K. But there is a post for a used set on Rennlist for $500. Buy the used set and spend the xtra $ saved on a Softronics flash. For a total of $1400 you'll end up with both better sound and improved performance.

POST 3Original post

Fister D "PSE" hack = ~$300 996/997 Sport Muffler

POST 4Original post

The "Hack".....most commonly known as the Gundo Hack cost me $150 at a local muffler shop

POST 5Original post

"The Hack" is actually the Porsche original Sport Muffler design before the PSE was made available with a cool in-dash selector switch with gate.

POST 6Original post

Instead of going with a louder exhaust which will make everybody unhappy, why not go with a louder Air Filter box, as it is done in the 997 Type S Porsche? Just open a small round opening in your Air Filter box, _preferably towards the inside of the car, and your ears will be in heaven. Check the design of the 997 Type S air filter box and you will understand immediately. As a 997 Type S owner, I love that feature. Yves

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 5840456

You don't necessarily need an "S" to do that, people with all models N/A Porsche cars have been doing that since 1999 production. It's a snorkel effect but still not as aggressive sounding as the Sport Exhaust modification IMO.

POST 8Original post

I have an 02 Carrera Cab and I too, long for the HMMmmmmm so MY plan is to do a "labodomy" on the muffler. I'm going to take it down.......cut a hole in the top rear of the muffler.....reach in and pull out anything "quiet" looking, and re-weld the access hole shut. I'll be doing this in the next two weeks so I'll let you know how I make out. Til then, do like the olden days.....get some balloons.....blow em up (not full), and tie em to the undercarriage so that they hit against the spokes of the rims and as you go faster........they get louder.

POST 9Original post

Fran, There is a "capped" hole on the muffler, you can open that up and hook it up to the exhaust port and this will give you the original factory "Sport Design" modification. Good luck,

POST 10Original post

Here is a picture showing the upper capped off section of the muffler. You need to run a tube from that hole and merge the pipe with the middle pipe right before the clamp. Any exhaust shop can do this for under $100.

Yes, sir that is correct.....

POST 12Original post

Is this the same for any 996? I have a 2000 C2 that I'm interested in doing this to if it's possible. Thanks!

POST 13Original post

POST 14Original post

Pre 2002 mufflers will be much quieter with the PSE hack than post 2002. These are 2002 on, you can tell by the "flex" part onthe inlets.

POST 15Original post

These are with the PSE mod This will not give much if any improvement on the older mufflers. There is another mod with a ~1.5" "J" pipe between the inlet and outlet that works well on the older style mufflers. Look at these. 996/997 Sport Muffler

POST 16Original post

Would you please let me know a bit more about this; or send me a link that's got the info? Best Wishes, Andy

POST 17Original post

Excellent!! Is this applicable / doable on a '04 C4S?

POST 18Original post

Great!!! Have pic of the completed operation; or is this it? Best Wishes, Andy

POST 19Original post

that is it. There is another one that is louder and works on both pre and post 2001 mufflers. Pics on FD motor sports 996/997 Sport Muffler

POST 20Original post

You can not beat the FisterD Sport exhaust Good luck....

POST 21Original post

D Fisters are the best mod you can do for the money! I have in my car and love it!!!

POST 22Original post

OK, I just did the "sport exhaust" muffler conversion (not the same as the FisterD) discussed above and documented in pictures by FPB111. Fantastic improvement! As Goldilocks would say "not too soft, not too loud, but just right!" This is the way my '03 C2 should have sounded as it came from the factory. No droning, no annoying resonance, no backfires, just pure Porsche sound. Sounds great when driven in anger.

Which Sport exhaust system did you install

POST 24Original post

The one using the technique described in this thread by Wheel Dynamics, Jared at Pelican Parts, and shown in pictures by FPB111. Very simple, but not the same plumbing as used in the Fister D hack.

POST 25Original post

I hope so. Mine are due from him any day for my '04. I ended up opting for the powder coating as well, not completely sure why Really looking forward to getting them installed.

POST 26Original post

I think what I find most interesting is the sound of the muffler gets more mellow each time you drive the car. It seems to me that as time goes by, the sound of my car is smoother and smoother as the exhaust breaks in Maybe it is just my imagination

POST 27Original post

Quotes source post: 5858616

Howdy, Did you take pics of the process, particularly what you found when you opened up the muffler? Any would really help with my planning.. This surgical proceedure is what we used to perform on our older 911's, back around '81. We also did the balloon thing to our bikes, in the mid '50s.... Happy Motoring Andy

POST 28Original post

Quotes source post: 6373816

Mine's done and am really happy with the sound. Recommended.

POST 29Original post

How hard is it to remove the exhaust and what all is involved? Do you need to remove the rear bumper like shown in the pics or can you remove it from under the car on a lift? I'm really wanting to convert mine but just don't wanna get in over my head! Thanks...

POST 30Original post

When we did mine, we found it easier to lift the car and remove the wheels. The most difficult part is getting my big hands into those small places. It is only I think four bolts on each side and then you need to manipulate the cans out Good luck. It took us a half day and two twelve packs . We could have probably done it quicker with out the chips and salsa

POST 31Original post

To remove the mufflers, the bumper must come off.

POST 32Original post

Quotes source post: 6397011

I would never disagree with a pelican parts specialist, but we did it without taking the bumper off. We did it on a lift. Maybe that is why it took us a half a day

POST 33Original post

The bumper isnt that difficult to remove. Takes maybe 15 minutes. I sure couldnt get the mufflers off without removing it.

POST 34Original post

I did this to my mufflers, 60.00 bucks at the local muffler shop. Put the car up on my drive up ramps. The mufflers came off and went back up without removing the bumber. Sounds great !!

POST 35Original post

hi, why did'nt you connect the top hole w/ the middle pipe like the others did? Also what year car is this off of? 996??? thanks...

POST 36Original post

The best sound comes from connecting the inlet to the outlet (partial bypass). My mufflers are the standard 3.4L (1999 996). I will post later the actual pictures from my muffler, the picture I posted is what I used to show the muffler shop what I wanted.

POST 37Original post

Pesuazo, what kinda sound does this give compared to the other way described in the previous post/page? Do you have pics of yours and have you installed them yet? Is it a real deep throaty sound or just a mello tone over stock? Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!

POST 38Original post

It is quite throaty, but not obnoxious as a straight bypass. The sound is awesome, I have them installed for a while yet. This time I am posting pictures of my actual mufflers.

POST 39Original post

looks great!!! Did you have to take your bumper off to remove and instal? also how did they cut the hole before welding the pipe on? and is it the same size opening as the pipe?? thanks...

POST 40Original post

No need to remove the bumper, you will just need to flex it outwards a little bit for the mufflers to drop and to go back up. Yes, guy told me he drilled a hole as close as he could to the size of the bypass pipe, he told me it was PITA too.

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 6396141

When I did it, or helped do it, there was nothing removed from the car. Of course it was raised on a lift - but just unscrewed the 3(?) bolts/side and loosened the collars and as someone already pointed out, pulled out gently on the lower side panel to ease the old mufflers out. It all went pretty smoothly. Fitting the new mufflers in took a little fiddling but with two people it came together pretty easily - maybe an hour+ or so. Absolutely fantastic sound if you are looking for a nice step up without anything obnoxious. The car seems to run smoother too but that could be the sound playing tricks on me It is by far, the best mod I have done
