As most seem to be buying as investment these days, I'm sure buyers would want an original panel car - nothing wrong with a repaired car but best to be transparent.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi I've made an offer on the above car and whilst undertaking some diligence came across a Google link to a thread about this particular car on Gassing Station, which has now been deletd. It was headed "Caveat Emptor Prospective GT2 Owners" and seemed to suggest there was a problem with the car that any prospective buyer should be aware of. The dealer that bought the car from BCA knows nothing about this (or any issue with the car) and and the HPI check is all clear. I also intend having a survey undertaken. Should I be concerned? Did any PH members out there see the topic or know anything about the car? All advice welcomed. Cheers.

POST 2Original post

I followed it for a while , try and search for it

POST 3Original post

I also followed the thread for a while. I recall the car had been involved in an incident referred to in this thread http://www.pistonheads.com/Gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

POST 4Original post

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a... this may be related as well.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Buying from a dealer that picked up the car from BCA. Aspect cars. It's listed on PH for £55k. Sounds like it is the same car that was written off - but why wouldn't that show up on the HPI check? Can't tell how badly it was damaged but from the earlier thread (thanks for linking) it doesn't sound good.

POST 6Original post

Very odd that it's HPi clear now when the insurance company agreed to write it off from the outset. That aside, it doesn't mean there's necessarily anything fundamentally wrong with the car now....but do get it checked out very carefully. There will be other GT2's that suffered far worse damage that were repaired by the insurance company and kept by the owner that had the accident. It's worth getting any of them checked carefully.

POST 7Original post

The recent thread was removed from PH. From memory the most significant repair was replacement of the offside rear quarter panel. I think the hire car cost had a lot to do with the GT2 being written off.

POST 8Original post

I think trying to find a 996 GT2 that hasn't had a panel replaced is a bit like searching for the holy grail. If the car has been repaired to a decent standard and it checks out after an independent inspection then I would be tempted to offer less than 50K for it. given its rather public history I don't think its worth 55K. On a side note, whatever happened to Lonmans 996 GT2?

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Rear panel took a knock but also the front near side had a heavy hit. The wheel was taken clean off. Presumably the car was also heavily tracked by the "wabbit" before she smashed it up on the road. Lots of references to seeing her at the ring. Guess this shouldn't concern me. Thanks to everybody for the help. Well done Gassing Station.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Now looking at the Black GT2 for sale with BHP. Registration WP51YSM. Sounds like that has also had a prang (!) but there seems little detail available on the extent / cost of repairs. Any knowledge out there on this car?

POST 12Original post

Sorry, can't help, but they are a fantastic car. Good luck on finding the one for you. Unfortunately there are never going to be many around with only 60 or so left on the road in the UK.

POST 13Original post

Glad that PH has helped out on this one and we have a happy ending. This is why my car is on at the price it is, welcome to the GT2 minefield. Tread carefully and you will end up with a truly special car. Happy Hunting.

POST 14Original post

Agree its difficult to find a GT2 thats not got some story attached but worth it if and when you do or its a story you can live with i hope you manage to find the right car for you soon, there will be no regrets

Could have bought this car for a shade over 30k PM me

POST 16Original post

The car was for sale in March this year at 39k at Clinkard cars No takers. I made contact with them and made a daft offer which was accepted which raised alarm bells for me. They had it for an age. Although this site has a lot of twaddle on it it's also a minefield of useful info. Be careful chaps.

I see this car appears on the market every now and again with the reg GT02 YEH. As most seem to be buying as investment these days, I'm sure buyers would want an original panel car - nothing wrong with a repaired car but best to be transparent.

POST 22Original post

If they're buying it with no intention to drive it, does it matter? On a serious note, I notice a lot of Turbo owners converting to 2WD as well as doing things like tuning to over 500bhp. Seems like a recipe for brief entertainment.

This is in the current Boxengasse auction on car and classic and available to view this weekend. Bidding up to £118,000 or so inc premium with 7 days to go.

POST 24Original post

What is this car's history, then? I can't see anything mentioned in the listing.

POST 26Original post

Yikes! Someone asked a question on the auction about any previous paint work and the comment seems to have disappeared! I feel this damage should have been disclosed.

POST 29Original post

I can't believe this isn't being mentioned at all on such an expensive auction. Wonder if it shows on carvertical etc??

POST 30Original post

None of the damage would have warranted the car being written off, in short, the car's value would have been waaay in excess of the repairs. However ... the insured was given a like for like loan car, a 997 Turbo at £500 a day. The repairs were scheduled to take 3 months, I'll let you do the maths ... As for the auction houses not disclosing this kind of stuff, whilst the claim would have been paid out, the car may not have a Cat marker against it. Edited by Slippydiff on Friday 7th August 23:16

Edited by Slippydiff on Friday 7th August 23:16 This car sold for £157,000 including premium. On the plus sides it had a lot of money recently spent and has only 40,000 miles but it has had this accident history. If it was original panels and original paint what would the car have been worth? £180,000? £185,000?

Seems like a recipe for brief entertainment. It's a recipe for a GT2 beating driving experience at a fraction of the cost! Modern billet K16 turbos will spool faster than even the standard 996 turbos AND produce more power than the K24s on the GT2, for around £5k. Take your pick of suspension and brake upgrades (and any 996's suspension will need a full overhaul now anyway), stick an exhaust on that doesn't sound like a hoover, upgrade the fueling and turn up the boost and you'll have one of the fastest cars on the road for a third of what the above accident damaged GT2 cost. I guess it comes down to whether you value the badge or the driving experience...
