Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been thinking of building a track car for quite a while and always assumed it would be a aircooled car but with the prices of 996's now it seems more attractive to go this way. I have to admit I have not had a lot to do with the water cooled cars in the past so my knowledge is limited hense this post. I know there have been problems with these cars and if someone could give me an overview that would be great. I would be planing to strip everything not required from the car and selling what I can. Is a 996 a good car to do this with?

POST 2Original post

Quotes source post: 106686

I thought the factory says don't track the cars without the Mezger engine? Maybe that's because they refuse to warrant the standard engine. Others will know. Here's one build ; no clue as to how it turned out.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

She has been on the track plenty of times in the past but I am wanting to go a bit further with setting it up and there is no way I am going to start ripping it apart it's too nice a car and I am kind of attached to it having had it for nearly 20 years. It's more of a project for me to build something for the track but just road legal so it can be driven there - I may not do it but it's fun planning it

POST 5Original post

As a 996 owner my two cents worth is, don't do it. The engine runs a risk of oil starvation particularly with semi slick tyres.  There are better options for a track car then a 996, the repair bill if you damage your engine will give you nightmares

POST 6Original post

Witnessed this when the 996s were fairly new.  A (PCQ) club member fitted a set of track tyres to his new(ish) 996 and ran it at a club track day at QR.  It suffered oil surge and consequent starvation (not a dry sump, apparently) and fritzed his motor.  He wasn't a happy camper...

POST 7Original post

Quotes source post: 106716

I don't see why you have to rip the car apart? Brakes, suspension and tyres are all you'd really need to get set up right + all can be changed without compromising the originality of your car. I'd suggest you'd be spending a lot more trying to get a 996 to a compatible competitive level, as I'm sure you realise it's all about power vs weight and taking a modern luxury car with all the mod cons isn't the ideal place to start for a track day warrior (exception being a 996 GT3, but that's different again). If you he'll bent on buying another porsche for track setup you can't go past a 944. 30k would have you in an amazing one.

<<< See avatar. 98 996 C2 25 full track days. See how it goes https://youtu.be/qoXsK52fV4s?t=3m Judge for yourself whether it can be done. Just my 2 cents worth.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source post: 106754

No doubt it can be done, but I doubt yours is what Paul may consider a 'cheap' 996 track car.

POST 11Original post

All I can say is if you do it, do something about oil starvation, an enlarged/baffled oil sump is not sufficient protection.

POST 12Original post

I am no expert, but I have also tracked my car a few times, actually Carrera28 and I have been on the track together many a time. Interestingly without too much money and just gradual mods I have been able to get my times closer and closer to Carrera28's 996. I know for a fact that we both get equal pleasure from the sessions.  In my opinion my car has the ability for a lot more "Bang for Buck" as I am dealing with older school technologies.  Hence modifications are often more DIY and affordable. I must say though the best investment both of us have made is in our skills, we have invested in some specialised advice a couple of times and each session has yielded better improvements on times than any other mods.

Wise words spoken here.  Terry's car provides much better bang for the buck and his bills when something goes wrong, whilst by no means cheap, are not as eye watering as a 996 and the DIY factor makes ongoing tuning and tweaking easier as well.

POST 14Original post

Yeah I think the 944 or 968 route might prove more fruitful.

POST 16Original post

So out of interest, how much would you budget to make the 944 a reasonable track dedicated car?

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 106751

Agreed. Cheap, light (don't chew brakes and tyres), no need for heavy mods chasing power, easy to tow and fast. Most of the clubbies run high 1:40s to mid 1:50s around phillip island with 4AG engine. To put that in context my GT2 with mods does mid to high 1:40s. There is a guy in Marque Sports Car Club with a one off clubbie with 1600cc ford crossflow that does 1:47s.......! He just doesn't slow down for corners. A 996 carrera would need a LOT of money spent to achieve that and no chance you'd get it back. Buy my old clubbie and do low 1:50s in a road reg $35k car. 240hp/600kg = fast and fun and bugger all to maintain with standard, low stress components: http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/Westfield-Sei-2008/SSE-AD-3240194 Here's some recent porsche lap times http://racing.natsoft.com.au/638909410/object_804825.87F/View?26

I'm FAR from being any expert on that, yet if I was looking at doing it in a 944 half seriously, you'd need a cage, decent suspension and some sticky tyres. What's that, under $5000? Gut the interior of anything that is not required (or not) and hit the track There would be a bit of track prep, yet it would be a helluva lot cheaper than buying a 996 AND prepping it for track use. There was a LHD race prepped 944 with a trailer for sale here in SA on Gumtree a while ago that I looked at. Couldve bought just the car for $6000, and it was ready to go. Perfect track hack

POST 19Original post

Here's an example of lots spent, cheap resale. Mx5 with 320hp! http://www.my105.com/ListingDetails/tabid/65/p/1/cid/518/id/15273/Default.aspx Or a 944 with trailer and new engine for 17k! A new engine for a 996 when it suffers oil surge will cost you that! http://www.my105.com/ListingDetails/tabid/65/p/2/cid/518/id/10756/Default.aspx Or if it must be a 911 buy a former cup car: http://www.my105.com/ListingDetails/tabid/65/cid/527/id/15137/p/1/Default.aspx Just be careful on maintenance costs with these - I hear it costs a fair bit to keep them on track but fast. Bottom line is - buy someone else's money pit

Track down the Wheeler Dealers episode where they did it.  I think they took a 94 turbo and made a trackday car out of it.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 106785

Man I'd love to turn that into a gravel rally car a la Tuthill Porsche style and go throw some rocks at spectators!

POST 24Original post

There are a couple of stat write off Turbo 996's around for roughly the price of a road going C2 that would make great track cars.

POST 25Original post

If the word budget in your vocabulary, then a cup car is to be avoided!

Hmm, this track ready 944 looks tempting..... I must resist.... Sorry for thread hijack!

POST 27 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks to everyone who has voiced their opinions and after reading them all and doing a lot of research online I have to agree with the majority that's there are better options out there and as many have suggested a 944 turbo ticks most of the boxes. The track ready one looks very tempting and would be a sensible choice, but a large part of the reason for me doing this is to have a project to get stuck into as that is what I really enjoy doing. I will spend some time looking into it and hopefully I can start a thread on the project if it gets off the ground, I havnt mentioned it to the boss yet. I guess I had better move to the another forum

POST 29Original post

if it were me i'd look at getting something like an e36 M3, and pulling the interior out etc. would be easier/cheaper than any 911
