I did it as they had the little blue pen mark on them (OEM) as to my understanding the factory mark some parts when they are checked (or something?) so I thought to give the car some life back and start with the mounts.

After the engine mounts I was both optimistic and pessimistic of the tranny mount due to the density of the rubber (being too much) and knowing that the mount was changed just 2 years prior.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

For instance, from a driving perspective, can't see why you would mark down a car for replacing aged fixed LCA'S with genuine 996 GT3 adjustable lower control arms if hey can be made to work and they deliver greater flexibility to sort out alignment issues on an ageing car(improved handling).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just thought I would share - last weekend was a long weekend in VIC so I changed the engine mounts. Purchased from Pelican (US) and had been sitting in my office starring at me for a good couple of weeks before I summoned the courage. I don't particularly have an huge array of tools at home (only the basics) as the mechanic that I go to is a friend first and mechanic second. Usually if I am fiddling I will do it in the comfort of his workshop and convenience knowing that if I do something wrong - he will fix it
. However of late he has been in transition to a new location (set up a new workshop) which has put a hold on our weekend catch-up. Being a long weekend I felt that I should do something constructive and went ahead with the install. Basically all you need is a Torque wrench ($100 from bunnings/supercheap auto) a 13- socket/18- deep socket/socket extention thing, jack stands and a jack. The whole process took about an hour or so and was very stress free. (

There are plenty of DIY walkthroughs and videos for the 996/997 install other than the enclosed link. My removed engine mounts were absolutely toast and the difference of the new mounts is very noticeable. The car is much more connected and that sloppy feeling is gone. Its a worth while DIY for any weekend excuse to spend time with your Porsche.

In terms of slop (reckon you are only 33% of the way there). With runs on the board and confidence high, when are you embarking on changing your stock tranny mounts with 997 stock ones
Tranny mounts were replaced 2 years ago (service invoice says) BUT- yes
it is absolutely on my list.
Will procrastinate for a couple of weeks before dropping the hammer on either 997 mount or aftermarket (

My indie has a press so may opt for the evoms.... let the inner turmoil of procrastination begin.
+1 Did the same job on the 964 ,updated them to 993 mounts,Man what a improvement car drives like a dream, Smoother shifts was an added bonus
Sorry to butt in on the water cooled turf
A clean trade of my silver 996 to a guards red 964 should suffice
Its good to know that this repair/mod improves the car. I was considering doing this prior to smit2100 recommendation but it's cemented now,
inevitably I will go back and forth for a bit but currently leaning to the 997 assembly.
I've been procrastinating (on a 996 turbo)a lot longer than yourself but I have some time on my side (eg expect to do the tranny and engine mounts when the clutch upgrade is done and drivetrain is dropped towards the end of the year. (few other areas to tinker with before then). All my internet forum readings have lead me to sticking with genuine Porsche parts (heavily swayed by a workshop owner on 6 speedonline that heavily tracks a 996 turbo and tries a truck load of parts and setups in terms of suspension setups and has found the combo below works very well for street / little bit of track . He is not a fan of aftermarket parts (particularly mounts) when their are Porsche genuine equivalent upgrade parts available, particularly off GT'S / RS's (Eg reckons after market are not as proven, some fitment issues and can be on the harsh side for any street duties in terms of excessive Noise/ Vibration / Handling (stiffness)

tomo, I will be bucking the trend on the engine mounts and going retro back to air cooled roots ( 996 to 964) but going more contemporary with 997 GT3 tranny mounts eg

997 GT3 tranny mounts can be had for 181.30 euro each plus shipping.(expect that it would be very reasonable if my last order was anything to go by) and not seeing a lot of Porsche Tax in that pricing and extremely competitive with after market pricing
However, I don't think the 997gt tranny mount is an option on the 996.1 Carrera (manual and tip) and 996.2 Carrera (manual) transmissions that use a design whereby a single bushing is pressed into the bell housing
Agreed,I have grown up (a little bit) and try to let logic influence my purchases. I went with OEM engine mounts other than aftermarket semi solids (torque solution/ RSS etc) even though 'my inner child" wanted the RSS. The amount of proven R&D that Porsche has on its components is hard to be denied. Aftermarket part manufacturers make claims that are "smoke and mirrors' primarily. They are a business it the end. Still, I fell for the after market underdrive pulley ($300) and that is awaiting for me to summon the courage to dremel off some of the engine. My airbox will stay (have removed the resonator) and exhaust system will stay (have hacked it -gundo style ), my headers will stay, plenium etc etc. Would love a Turbo and slap myself each time I start clicking on TPC turbo kits and VF superchargers. At $15k for a boosted carrera sounds sweet but then the logic comes back around. Want fast - buy factory built fast - buy a Turbo. So inevitably it will be - wait until the kids grow up and finances permit just to add to society another quintessential old man in a baseball cap struggling to get in and out of his supercar.
I think the p/n 99737503303 is not an exclusive gt3 part but shared across the models. Yes - from what I can see it is not an option for "
996.1 Carrera (manual and tip) and 996.2 Carrera (manual) transmissions that use a design whereby a single bushing is pressed into the bell housing" I have a tiptronic so I am good for this upgrade.
This is interesting but may be too hash -

Thanks for the write up. I had planned on fitting some RSS mounts to my GT3 when I get the opportunity. Have heard engine mounts are a fantastic upgrade for the relatively small sum of money.
160k and they were shot. I've had the car for about 5-7000kms. The American forums say if you have vibration in the seat or a muffler dropping etc. I did it as they had the little blue pen mark on them (OEM) as to my understanding the factory mark some parts when they are checked (or something?) so I thought to give the car some life back and start with the mounts.
I bought this one -

Gathering goodies for an install day (underdrive pulley, suspension, tranny mount)
Installed the tranny mount today - was at my friends workshop so hoist and goodies made it a lazy hour or so effort. Awesome, very happy with the results. Thank you smit2100 for the push in the right direction.
The part I pulled out has the p/n
99637503303 with rubber in good shape, but the slop was there. Replaced with this -(997/996 mount with 75dm rubber)
http://www.torquesolution.com/product-p/ts-por-012.htm
no noticeable noise - car is feeling better and better.
Next is the suspension install.
Great to hear no noticeable downside NVH ( Noise Vibration and Handling)
issues, but all upside in terms of drivetrain slop.
Appreciate the thankyou note. It wasn't that long ago, I made a first post giving a view / opinion in the context of a push in the right direction and got nothing, but poor newbie, never owned a P car and has absolute no clue and way off the mark.
Your reference to suspension install has provided some motivation to pull my finger out and getting cracking on sorting mine out. Suspect you directly notice a tad more relationship to the road surface in terms of feeling a few more bumps, but loose a bit of jumpiness / floatiness when into the corners and on the brakes. For me, even if you don't notice anything behind the wheel, its just more visually alluring seeing a circa 2 finger gap (top of tyre and wheel arch) and a rear end on a 996 (better than most) pointed even closer to the ground than what you see in stock guise. Heading down the coilover route (least regret solution in terms of ride and possible rebound / harness) as opposed to springs and shocks. Eg Have a few knobs and threads to play around with in case of any post installation regrets blues and reverting back to stock. Just finding the pillow equilibrium theory comes into play, push down on one side (ride height) and the other side pops up (tyre wear) and procrastinating which aftermarket route to take to address that and keeping a balance and ticks the main functional box (prevent binding and part on part clashes when looking at coilovers sway bars ,end links) but not lighting up the undercarriage like a Christmas tree in terms of an array of aftermarket parts.
Yes, very happy. Was entertaining the idea of the tranny mount -but you swayed me over the line for that one. Appreciate that. After the engine mounts I was both optimistic and pessimistic of the tranny mount due to the density of the rubber (being too much) and knowing that the mount was changed just 2 years prior. But a night and day difference (even though mine is a tip) so manual would be a very worth while upgrade.
Well that sucks, I would have imagined that the 996 tranny mount p/n being superseded should have awoken some interest, maybe it is just not a common serviced item and arrogance or ignorance prevailed at that time. (?) I went to a PFA - VIC meet this morning and everyone that I spoke to were there for all the right reasons.(great fun - and thank you to the organisers)
A 10yrs + car with the complete suspension system as its backbone of balance/handling and essentially what Porsche is known for ; its got to be serviced and replaced. What has surprised me is how much of a difference it has made.
Interweb calls

Pity I am not spending much time in town these days. If I was, and you are referring to the autohaus event in Elwood / Brighton, I may have been chatting with you this morning rather than keyboard warrioring out another longish post. That said, parking would of been interesting based on a big turnout. I'm sure a bit of eye candy around in the 4 wheel sense.
Totally aligned with the 10yr plus call and need to replace parts to maintain performance levels. Preventative maintenance vs extended performance drop offs as one waits for a part failure because its not on the service schedule list seems to be lost on some. (rubber deteriotes and plastics wear and valves leak). Not known for keeping circa 13 year old plus cars in stock guise because of concerns of an impact on the sell price. (Boost addict). Neither do I aspouse to the theory that the engineers and bean counters and product designers got it so right that using anything but originally designed factory parts gets the whole balance of the car out of whack and theres no scope when changing out parts to upgrade them to more proven performance parts from other models / aftermarket parts that can noticeably improve boost, driveability , balance and handling
For instance, from a driving perspective, can't see why you would mark down a car for replacing aged fixed LCA'S with genuine 996 GT3 adjustable lower control arms if hey can be made to work and they deliver greater flexibility to sort out alignment issues on an ageing car(improved handling). Yet on the other hand, mark up, or not concerned and place a higher value on a stock car that claims stock, but replacement involved running with control arms that are OEM parts (not genuine Porsche boxed / stamped Porsche part no).
I have decided to go with Ohlins R+T coilovers. I was going to lock in some pss10's (ridden off ohlins which was my preference as cost prohibitive at circa USD 3500 ex delivery duties etc) when you take into account other accompanying parts I consider should be done to compliment the coilovers), but stumbled across a tuning shop hit on a search for eibach sways bar kits prices. Seems they have only applied their usual Japanese type tax hike markups to the odd Porsche parts they stock. Found they will deliver a set of Ohlins R&T cheaper than what I could land kw's, pss10's, Ohlins sourced from Europe , US or locally (Keyboard warrioring skills applied to www. shopping can drive you mod budget further). For me, the ohlins materials of construction are better than the PSS10's in terms of corrosion and the dampening adjustments seem to be a bit easier to dial in compared to k3's. Spring rates appear not to be as stiff as kw's that gives you better adjustability to bring it back closer to stock like ride if post purchase installation regrets occur. Ride height regrets are not an issue, nothing a turn on a thread collar can't sort out..

Concerns / issues contemplated
1)upgrade sway bars front and rear vs just rear. genuine adjustable gt3 vs aftermarket eg eibach full kit front and rear = less landed than web price for a 996 gt3 adjustable rear bar.
2) stock sway bar links = fixed and straight = concerned with binding and bending of stock fixed links particularly if running adjustable sway bars = need adjustable links
3) need to address tyre wear when ride height dropped and greater squat = need more toe dial out/ in the rear (thinking circa gt2 alignment specs but a lower squat ) = adjustable toelinks
4) concerned with parts clashing eg eg not enough curve in endlinks with new coilovers to clear front drive axles even with stoc kfixed sway bar.
5) solid fixed thrust bearing in adjustable gt3 lca's vs stock rubber
I'll provide an update with what I actually do to sort out my suspension , but unfortunately that won't occur for at least a couple of months down the the track when I am back in town.
Nice !!
Yep, that was the one
Thank you, Santa's list is locked and ready.
