It's had the Crank Position Sensor replaced, by Porsche.
Leading evidence: 'Replace by porsche' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'touch dramatic' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean gunk out of the throttle body (tb cleaner)' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
My fix was cleaning the harness plug to the throttle body (with electrical cleaner) and cleaning the gunk out of the throttle body (TB cleaner) .

Suggestion
If the plug to the throttle body is disconnected for a couple of minutes and then re connected it resets the throttle body adaptions.(but when you pulled the battery for the cable replace it would have been the same)
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Tried it with a new one at Porsche and no difference.
Hi everyone,
probably a touch dramatic, but need a little advice.
I have an issue starting the car if it's at operator temperature and have let it sit for 5 or 10 minutes. It coughs and splutters (like it's pre-igniting), and then stops. On the second attempt is starts ok-ish. If I let it sit for 20 or 30 minutes, it starts perfectly (same as when it's cold).
This is what I have done so far. The MAF sensor has been checked. Tried it with a new one at Porsche and no difference. The cable between the alternator, starter and battery has been replaced. The alternator has been checked and is fine. It's had the Crank Position Sensor replaced, by Porsche.
My thoughts are that it might have a leaking fuel injector??? If you stop it, while hot and try and start it immediately, it starts ok (not chance for the injector to leak) If I let it sit, perhaps the fuel leaks into a cylinder and therefore coughs and splutters on start (pre-ignites). Second attempt is ok because the fuel has burnt off on the first attempt?? If is sits long enough the fuel evaporates and it starts ok??
Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated!! It's becoming quite frustrating and I just want to get it sorted!
thanks
Tim
Have absolutely no clue but I'd be thinking it's more temperature sensor related and might be worth a few Google searches along those lines to see if that's a possibility.
Don't think you'd notice a leaking injector.
Good luck with the search for the cause and hopefully inexpensive cure.
I thought the same but no error messages have come up via the diagnostics at Porsche. It does have a heavy fuel smell on a cold start up? Not sure what that means!
Hopefully someone has heard or had the same issue and know the fix!
Tim
Is the cable you replaced the same as the one mentioned in this article?
Sounds like it might be, but just in case...

I really dont know- but some suggestions-
With supercharged Merc's a PITA was rough idle or idle hunting (randomly though) - from accelerator pedal sensor to throttle body replacements, even the engine harness being replaced it was never conclusively solved (would throw various codes). My fix was cleaning the harness plug to the throttle body (with electrical cleaner) and cleaning the gunk out of the throttle body (TB cleaner) . If the plug to the throttle body is disconnected for a couple of minutes and then re connected it resets the throttle body adaptions.(but when you pulled the battery for the cable replace it would have been the same)
Could it be fuel pump related or some vacuum leak (
maybe
in intake - as there are rubber connections)
I hope this helps in some way.
Yep, that's it. Did it myself. Bit of a nightmare but learnt a lot along the way.
thanks. As a general rule, the car runs great. I've taken it to targa tassie a couple of times and has never missed a beat. And whilst it is frustrating with this issue, it does always start on the second or third attempt. I'm going to look a little more into the injectors. The symptoms are the same.
Awesome - Love the Targa - I used to have the VHS set of the first 3 years of Targa, lots of Porsche action. When I had my learners licence my family did a 2 week road trip (cue the National Lampoons soundtrack) around Tassie, I quickly learnt how much I needed to learn about driving
