I was told the battery in my old E class was cactus and needed replacing by a mechanic, they tested and said we can sell you a new battery but there is nothing wrong with it.

Of all the threads I read no one used the European adapters that come with the battery so that might be where the fitments issues come from.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hey all, Dealership has just told me my battery is dying and needs replacing. My car is an 04 996. They have quoted $341 for the battery and $162 for installation. Thats wayyyy out there... Anyway have seen that the optima 34r red top works well but might need some modifications to fit. Anyone use one of these? Had really great success with an optima 34 before which lasted me 7+ years without needing a charge! Hesitant to put in a battery that might not fir properly though. Anyone have any other recommendations? The OEM battery came in 2 sizes a 70ah and an 80ah. Currently have a Bosch S3+ and im going to test fit the old 34 I have for size. Cheers!

Dan, I'd go to Autobarn and spend $204 on a Supercharge brand with a 3 year warranty https://www.autobarn.com.au/supercharge-automotive-battery-gold-mf66 If you are a brand snob, just pull the stickers off before you install it.  Some of these stores install for free if you ask nicely and will dispose of your old battery for you. I'd then buy a Ctek 5 amp charger to keep it fresh and ready to go for about 120 bucks: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/CTEK-MXS-5-0-12V-5AMP-SMART-BATTERY-CHARGER-CAR-BOAT-4WD-CARAVAN-BIKE-MARINE-AGM-/141031652785

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have been thinking about a Bosch AGM also but ill check out the supercharge. I have that charger would also highly recommend it. Although I'm still impressed with the optima lasting 7 years! I'll have to find the reciept to see exactly when I bought it

Yep, they dispose of them....they get up to $10 each for them. I was told my battery was cactus too.  So I bought a Matson float charger ($70) and I still have the same battery.  That was nearly 4 years ago. I read this on a forum somewhere that the Optima has (had) a good reputation when they were made in the USA but have shifted south of the border to Mexico and so did the quality. Then again, I have a friend that runs a drift car with a yellow top, abuses the hell out of it but it keeps on coming back for more.  Has had it for 4 years. Sorry, not much help

Geez. Bring it around and I'll fit it for a bottle of red.

POST 6Original post

Most Battery,s are made in Korea these days by only a few large manufacturers  ,,you don,t need to by the OEM Bosch battery ,,,,,as mentioned above there are other alternatives out there that are just as good and cost less ......also try battery world and other performance battery stores and $160 dollars to fit it WTF its like 15 minutes work they should fit it for free if your paying $340 for it ................

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I almost feel off my chair when the service department sent me the quote! I'm happy and would enjoy swapping it over myself. Not keen on spending that much on a regular battery or installation. I can get a better one for less.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 172560

Of course they did, and were expecting you to say yes as well.

POST 9Original post

I would be going to a Battery only shop (Battery world or the equivalent independent) and get it tested. I was told the battery in my old E class was cactus and needed replacing by a mechanic, they tested and said we can sell you a new battery but there is nothing wrong with it. If you do need a new one they will I think fit for free as well.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all, I advised to jump it and road test it and I'll deal with it when I get it back. The ctek I have has a recondition mode so ill give that a shot and go from there. Still leaning towards the optima if I do need a new one

POST 11 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Going to get my old optima D35 out of storage and try to revive it. I'll keep everyone posted if it fits Of all the threads I read no one used the European adapters that come with the battery so that might be where the fitments issues come from.

POST 12Original post

LOL @ $162 for installation.  Seriously.  DIY in less than 5 minutes, and I'm slow.  Two easily accessible connectors, have your radio code ready.  Plus you get a chance to vacuum out the crud that builds up in the battery tray area and check that the water drains there are not blocked.

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mines an 04' so I don't even need a radio code! im going to question the $162 for installation when I pick it up
