I have a three month old 2009 911. Have put some miles on it: 5,000
. Two days ago I hear a ringing/whistling sound coming from the engine. I take it to the dealer thinking its a belt. They tell me it the water pump. The bearings failed. Does this sound right? I cant imagine a vehicle so well engineered could have such a failure. Considering todays economy I am concerned they are trying to make a little extra money on the warranty repair. Although it does not immediately impact me financially, it tells me these folks cannot be trusted for non-warranty repairs. Any opinions?
Also, this is my fourth Porsche since 1984. For non-warranty repairs I used a great mechanic, Pete at Redline Service in Santa Monica, CA. Unfortunately, he retired years ago. Does anyone know of a reputable mechanic in the Los Angeles area? Thanks.
Sorry to hear about the water pump. Maybe you should try another dealer if one is near-by. See if they come to the same conclusion.
This is the first I've heard about a water pump failure on an 09. As you know parts are supplied to Porsche from outside vendors, just like any other automobile manufacturer. It's possible you got a bad part that failed prematurely. Insofar as the dealer is concerned, do you have some reason to believe they are not on the level? Dealer's typically don't make that much money on warranty repairs, so I would be less concerned about financial motivations than incompetence. Perhaps a face to face discussion w/ the service manager would be advisable. If you aren't satisfied you certainly have a lot of choices for Porsche dealers in the LA area.
I know someone here in NC with a 2009 911 who also had a water pump fail earlier this week.
We'll see if this becomes a trend...
Maybe there is a bad batch of water pumps....
I had a 2003 C4S with a bad water pump (after 2000 miles) and it took 4 or 5 trips to the dealer to finally get the system to stop leaking... not that this really is parallel to your problem other than to say it can, and does, happen on newer cars.
Like others here, the water pump bearings in my 2007 CS failed right around the 2 year mark. My post is here:

Does your replacement part number match the one I quoted in my post? If so, then its the same "high risk" part.
BTW, I got really great service at McKenna in Norwalk (ask for Huy Ha -- pronounced "wee ha"). I heartily recommend them, and Huy in particular. Service is open on Saturdays too.
Thanks for the McKenna referral. That dealership is not very far from where I live. The dealer in question is very close to my office. I will give McKenna a try next time around. Thanks.
I'll check tomorrow and let you know. The paperwork is at my office.
I too had to have the water pump replaced in about 5000 km on my 09 CS. I detected a faint failed bearing sound coming from the engine compartment. I took it straight to the dealer who confirmed a failed (must have been defective) bearing in the water pump. I don't suspect anything other than a genuine failed bearing in my case.
