I have a rig to mimic (bypass) the airbag that I used to test when I was trying to troubleshoot the issue last year.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Background: About 6 years ago I had to have my driver side door replaced as it was shredded by a truck's lug nuts. There was no impact and the airbag didn't deploy. I've been chasing intermittent airbag lights since then. I replaced the airbag control module in the center console to no avail. The light would come on every three months or so and I would clear it. Always the same error. I was never able to track it down but recently I had an idea that it might be connected to jacking up the car as the light came on recently after I did that. Skip said that there is another controller behind the fuse box. I wasn't able to find it but I did not do an exhaustive search. Today I parked in a lot away from all other cars as I always do. I put the top up and the windows go up as part of the process. I opened the door to get out and thought that I should roll the windows down an inch or so as it was very hot. I put the key to the on position, lowered the passenger window, then lowered the driver's window and BOOM!. WTF was that! I look at the door and the airbag is hanging out with lots of smoke. Luckily the door was open or what little is left of my hearing would be gone. I'm not sure if I'm going to replace the airbag or bypass it., I'll bring it to the body shop on Monday and see what they say. I would think they have more experience with airbags than a Porsche shop since they're always dealing with accidents.

POST 2Original post

Holy crap, Bill! Very happy you didn’t swing an arm as that sucker went kablooee and glad you’re okay. I bet they can figure out where the short was now.

POST 3Original post

Jeez, Ive never seen that happen before. Thanks for sharing. It doesnt sound like you were injured, so thats a relief. Did the airbag ignite immediately after pressing the power window button? Do you often roll the windows when the door is open? I agree with hatchetf15 about there being a short, and my guess is that its located by the door hinge.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not sure about the exact timing, but the window was down the inch or so that I wanted. I don't think that had anything to do with it. I have a rig to mimic (bypass) the airbag that I used to test when I was trying to troubleshoot the issue last year. I'll remove the airbag and see if I can get the door panel back together. It would have been worse if I was driving. I'll clear the code, add the bypass, and see if the airbag light comes back on in the future.

POST 5Original post

Damn dude thats terrible and Im glad it didnt cause a worse situation.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I had to buy a new door panel because of the damage caused by the airbag.
