That said I've never had 18s, but like you I saved weight changing from the 17" OEM wheels to momos.

After running now for 1 1/2 years with the new 17" and 4 years prior with the 18", this is my impression.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I guess some are curious to what will happen when you go from the heavy 18" Turbo twist look to the lightest 10-spoke 17" rims. I was and I did the swap 1 1/2 year ago on my 2000 C4. I started with 18" Turbo twist. Rear tires was Michelin N3 spec 265 and fronts was 225 PS4 (not PS4S). I swapped to 10-spoke 17" with fresh Michelin N3 Spec tires, 205 front and 255 rear. The difference in wheel weight is 15kg in total! First about tire pressure. The sticker under my hood says 36 PSI front and rear. I started with this and had a ooh-****-what-have-I-done feeling, it feelt like ****. I now run same pressure as the 18" (36front, 44 rear), much better. After running now for 1 1/2 years with the new 17" and 4 years prior with the 18", this is my impression. The positives: 1. Road noise is much lower. At speed I can now enjoy the stereo. 2. Comfort on bumpy roads is better. 3. Acceleration is better, but just barely. Don't buy them for this reason, it is so minimal. 4. The car feels more agile, light on it's feet. The negatives: 1. My stock suspension(it is fresh and in good condition) does now feel a tad soft. 2. Driving over 8/10 the sidewall flex is noticeable. 3. Less total grip => lower cornering speed. If someone would ask me what to go for I would say: 18" if your priority is to drive as fast as possible or you prefer the look, 17" for everything else. The biggest plus for the 17" is the road noise, I will keep them simply because of this.

POST 2Original post

Thanks for sharing your informative observations. Ive been thinking about changing to different wheels, and heavily considered going to 17s. This has been very helpful!

POST 3Original post

IMO the road noise (but not comfort) primarily came from swapping the tires for fresh ones. The rest of what you said certainly tracks (ha ha) though. Unsprung weight makes a big difference in feel!

POST 4Original post

I love the ride and handling of my C2 Coupe on its 17s. And I choose Conti DWS 06 All seasons over the equivalent Michelin, and over summers, for the sound deadening. 996s can be pretty loud anyway. I'm not worried about lap times, just comfort and handling. That said I've never had 18s, but like you I saved weight changing from the 17" OEM wheels to momos. I keep my stock cats and manifolds in storage. Going to xpipe 200 cell cats, headers and aftermarket mufflers also saved a lot of weight in the rear where it matters. It feels great to me. If you really want to go nuts, get some eibach anti sway bars and get rid of the soft front end feel, I found that to make a huge difference in body roll and makes the car more pointy.
