Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Cylinders on the replacement unit look great (checked with endoscope).
Leading evidence: 'Check with endoscope)' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check rms condition' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I may not be best but I use the 3 cables for shift and ebrake to hang it.

I sure wish there was a better way to check the RMS condition.

Is the correct procedure for the C4 to support the tranny and take the 2 horizontal through bolts out, and then the 4 cover/carrier plate bolts, then disconnect the 3 front wheel driveshaft bolts??

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Gents,
I am in the process of disconnecting everything on my 99 C4 tip for an engine/tranny removal, following the workshop manual, but am not sure about the tranny carrier and driveshaft disconnection. The workshop manual says to remove the 4 cover/carrier plate bolts and the 2 tranny carrier bolts, which are both bolted to the tranny by the two horizontal through bolts. This would imply that both drop with the engine/tranny.
However, the manual says nothing about the front wheel driveshaft bolts, which would be extremely difficult to get to without removing the cover/carrier plate.
Is the correct procedure for the C4 to support the tranny and take the 2 horizontal through bolts out, and then the 4 cover/carrier plate bolts, then disconnect the 3 front wheel driveshaft bolts??
Best regards
Good Luck with your work. What are you planning to do?
I pulled the tranny on my 99 C4 this week for differential bearing work and what looks like a full flywheel and clutch replacement. 101000 miles, but only about 78,000 on the engine.
I did mine the way you describe, but before I put my transmission jack in place, I loosened all the bellhousing bolts and left them snug.
Hi LanceGT4, thanks for the good luck. Did you remove the 3 nuts/bolts on the front side or rear side of the driveshaft? Did you have to drop the car and move it to get to the 3rd nut/bolt?
I am doing straight engine replacement with used 3.4 engine and new air-oil separator. Plenty of rusty bolts under there; hell of a job! The existing lump went up in a puff of white smoke on the highway. Sounds like a bag of nails: broken valve?? broken cylinder?? we'll see when she comes out...
Cylinders on the replacement unit look great (checked with endoscope). Intermediate shaft bearing is good (turns smooth with no play) so leaving it alone and RMS looks good (no oil leaking). Dean
Dang! to bad about your current motor. I sure wish there was a better way to check the RMS condition.
I guess I'm lucky mine is just about spotless. More like 20,000 that 101,000:-)
I took the front side bolts out and was able to rotate the 3rd bolt down after putting the trans in nuetral. Press or pry the couple forward and have some wire or heavy zip ties to suspend it from. I may not be best but I use the 3 cables for shift and ebrake to hang it. There is a pilot shaft to keep it lined up with the output on the tranny. You have to go about 25 to 30mm to clear it.
Good Luck.
