To replace to dial on a 997, I think it requires replacing the entire module, big bucks.

Suggestion

My current solution, which is rather half azz but it works, is to use a Sharpie or permanent black marker to touch it up every now and then.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think Porsche has fixed the problem on the newer 997s.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I recently acquired a 2005 (997) Carrera with 33K miles on the oddometer. I noticed that the black surface of the TEMP control dial seems to be peeling or chipping off, revealing the white surface beneath. Has anyone experienced a similar problem and if so, what might be the best way t go about restoring the black surface which appears to be slightly textured as opposed to a smooth finish? Thank you for any help on this issue.

POST 2Original post

I have the same issue with my car. The dial has a rubberized coating that is common on all Porsche, VW and Audi cars recently. I have a Passat also with the same issue, but on all the dials and buttons. To replace to dial on a 997, I think it requires replacing the entire module, big bucks. My current solution, which is rather half azz but it works, is to use a Sharpie or permanent black marker to touch it up every now and then. It's not perfect, but it is better than the white plastic staring at me. I do recall, back from my early military days in the Army, there is a product we used on it brass eyelets of our black boots when the coating wore off. It was called M-Nue as I recall, tough as nails and very dark black. If I ever find some, I'll try that as well.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the response Mark Howard. I will look into the black marker idea. I just have to be careful not to make it look worse. Replacement of the entire module would be the ideal soluton, but might result with the same deterioration over time, after spending the big bucks anyway.

POST 4Original post

I think Porsche has fixed the problem on the newer 997s. Perhaps it was just a bad batch.
