Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I also replaced the case halves with eBay parts because that rubber was pretty much shot as well.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The red LED on the extra key that I keep in the safe and never use wasn't lighting up, so I thought the battery had gone dead. I put in a new CR2032 battery (with the correct polarity) and the two halves of the key head wouldn't close tight (see attached photo). Small problem as I can buy a new key head (both halves) on Ebay and install my circuit board, the glass "pill" and metal key in Ebay key head. However, the LED still doesn't light up with the new battery or remotely lock/unlock the doors or trunk. The key does start the car though. I removed the small circuit board and pressed the little buttons directly and still nothing. Does anyone have any suggestions?
How are the little rubber nubs on the microswitch buttons? Mine were completely mushed out from age, to the point where the microswitches were not being activated. I found a kit online to replace them. I also replaced the case halves with eBay parts because that rubber was pretty much shot as well. The eBay parts aren't perfect but they're good enough; I've used them for over 2 years without problems.

The microswitch buttons are like new since I hardly ever used this key. I saw the video in the link that you sent, and I'll look very closely at the circuit board to see if there's something on there that's broken.
So, here's the upshot. I found an automotive locksmith in England on Ebay who will repair the electronics on my key and install a new key head for around $55 including shipping back to me. I shipped my key to him for $20 via USPS. That was almost two weeks ago and he still hasn't received my key to repair it. I guess mail in England is quite slow because my key made it across the pond within two days.
Once my key is repaired and returned to me, I'll tell everyoneabout my experience.
My guess is the top half (buttons) is an after market, and the bottom half appears to be OE... therefore, they don't match which is why they won't snap together correctly. Aftermarket shells are horrible in my experience.
It's not uncommon for previous owners to break the buttons and instead of sourcing a OEM shell, they purchase replacements off eBay or Amazon only to find they match perfectly. I've even seen where the OEM electronic board won't snap into the new aftermarket shell because of poor reverse engineering by the chinese knock-off companies.
I'm the original owner of the car so I know that the keys and the key shells are all OEM. My repaired key (with new key shells) was delivered today and it works perfectly. My story is on a new post.
