Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

18 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

03 122k Ok so new battery. on 1st start up drops to 10v then goes back to 13.3ish. Then shut her down reaet immediately and its OK. Let her sit like an hour or so the volts drop to 10v. Crank it sounds like my old lady bitching at me grunting. Volts drop to like 6v and she dies. Connect a jump pack and I'm all good. Battery with car started goes back to the 13.3 is. so it's intermittent. I want to rule out the alternator because it's charging the battery no problem. Just cranks and dies randomly. I'm gonna go with a starter and that Y cable being she's got good miles on her and no real stats on any maintenance. Here's some pics if anyone can chime in on any other ideas. That Y cable does look new right?

POST 2Original post

The wire in the photo is the wire from the battery to the jump point. I believe the Y cable is on the back of the jump point. You could try to check the Y cable connection on the back of the alternator and on the starter. Also check the ground cable on the Bank 2 cylinder head to the body. You can access the ground cable from the right rear wheel well. It could also be a starter going bad. Good luck with it. Mark

POST 3Original post

So it drops to 10v when cranking? Your starter is bad.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 19325499

When cranking it just keep dropping to 6v even.

POST 5Original post

The jump point is part of the Y cable, but the problem area for that cable is the end that connects to the starter. Also, the Y cable normally exhibits its current draw (voltage meter drop) when the engine is warm, not on start up. If you hadn't told me your battery was new I would have 100% said you need a new battery. You may indeed have a bad battery and you can have that ruled out at almost any auto parts chain.

Classic starter motor issues. the windings r bad and its basically shorting out causing a huge voltage draw.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Starter was original. swapped her out for a 90$ amazon deal and we are all better now! I hope! You gotta love my AOS hack. That pipe isnt ever gonna move lol

Interesting. My car does this, drops to 10V, but starts just fine. I will be on the look out for a future starter, although I tend to feel like a 2V drops seems like a normal drop with such high current demands.

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

New starter installed. Car sat about 3 hours..dropped from.12 to 10v. But is the output better now? Look at video.. See the output from a reader on startup. Notice it goes right back up after starting so the alternator is good. I might just be cautious but you pros gimme your opinion You Tube

A car battery should not drop from 12V to 10V after 3 hours. Are you running accessories during this time? I found online that a car battery will lose 0.1V per month at 10C (faster in warmer weather). Perhaps you have a parasitic drain? How old is the battery?

POST 12Original post

I'm with Murphy on this. It shouldn't read 10 V on the battery. I think you have an undiagnosed battery issue. I know you said the battery was new, but it must still be under warranty, so I would drive it over to your local parts place and have them test it, or better still, back to where you got it.

BINGO! BAD CELL ! New battery under warranty and she starts like a new girlfriend! Amazing. Well I did put a new starter in her which was 20 years.old..So I'll chalk it up.for maintenance lol They dont make them like they useto!

Might not be the 'new' batteries fault for failing/shorting out a cel, A shorted starter winding will over amp most starting batteries. If that condition continues it will stress the best battery big time. When dc voltage drops in half, 6v instead of 12v, the amperage doubles. So, if a good starter lock rotor amperage draws 250amps(briefly) @ 12v, then the same starter @6 volts will draw 500amps. A bad starter could draw close to lock rotor amps continuously while spinning slow...
