Just had my 2009 997.2 serviced yesterday. After leaving the dealer and driving about 25 miles to work, I noticed the check oil indicator lit up. I pulled over and check the oil level... it was above the maximum line.
1. Why would the dealer overfill the oil?
2. Will this damage my engine?
3. Is this so serious that I should take it back and have the oil drained and refilled correctly?
I also checked the Tire Pressure Monitor. It look like this: 2 5
4 4
1. What should the correct readings be?
2. I think this is rather poor workmanship of the dealer to not have ensured uniformed tire pressure.
Comments?
I wouldn't wait until you have 10 peoples opinions to decide what to do.
Just call the dealer and have them take care of it. If they don't offer your next oil change for free or at a deep discount, find another dealer.
Sad part about the overfill reading is that you wont know if it was 4oz or 4qts overfull. I kinda miss the dipstick days. Fyi it would blow smoke if the engine was way over full.
I agree w/ ul2fly. Overfill is not good for these engines. Take the car back to the dealer ASAP and have them remove the overfill. A Porsche dealer should know better than this. I also agree w/ ul2fly about not having the dipstick. With an electronic dipstick the overfill could be as he says, 4oz or 4qts. Don't wait for any more opinions.
Your air pressures are on a sticker on the inside of your driver's door but be sure and read your manual and the many threads here about TPMS. Always use a
quality
gauge for measuring the air in your tires and use TPMS as an early warning device. Dealers are notorious for improperly adjusting tire pressures so it would not surprise to find yours incorrectly filled. Also before you go to the dealer check your invoice and see how much oil they charged you for just so you are prepared for the service writer.
I called the service manager and he tells me that overfill will not harm the engine. He also tells me that the check oil indicator should go on only when there is not enough oil. I know both of these statements are incorrect. This will be the last time I have my vehicle serviced by these folks. If you live in the Los Angeles area and want to avoid this dealer you can send me a private message and I will let you know who they are.
The biggest question is how much did they say they put into the car when it was serviced? Despite the alarm others have raised - mostly because it's hard to tell how much the overfill is - an overfill of 1 qt or less will not hurt the motor - it really won't - it's not that big a deal. Be mad they charged you for too much oil, but they didn't try to ruin your car.
The oil check indicator
does
only come on when the oil is dangerously low - this this respect the service manager is correct. If your oil indicator light is on, then it's probably a bad sending unit, or some other fault, and you should have it looked at under warranty. Look at your work order, if they put 10 qts. or less into it, it's ok.

Actually.... the owners manuel states that it will come on when there is too much oil as well...
Must be new for '09 - 997.1 cars had the warning only for low oil levels.

I wouldn't trust what they charged you for as the correct amount that wa poured into the engine. My local Porsche dealer over filled mine twice before I gave up and started doing it myself. I just cant understand why the dealers keep doing this, I would rather be 2-qts low than have 2-qts too much.
As a mater of fact I run my car 1bar low or (.6 of a quart) all the time now..
I was charged for 10 quarts. With quite a markup I might add.
The situation you describe is all too familiar. Phone PCNA and lodge a complaint about this dealer. If only Porsche could adopt the high quality practices of Lexus. Unfortunately, like yours, my dealership behaves more like a GM dealer than one that services the most expensive and remarkable marque in the world. Speak up, or we will all be responsible for the decline.
