Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How do we know what series engine is in this vehicle? I do know that it is a 2001 Feb build, The vin# shows MY2001 996 I am being told it is a 3.6L and would like to know how to confirm please. WPOZZZ99Z1S642536

POST 2Original post

Well it is possible that it could be a 3.6 if it had an engine transplant as it wasn't until later in the year that the gen 2's were being produced. But it would definitely not be the original engine then. If we are talking about your standard Carrera model (not GT3, GT2 or Turbo) Gen 1 cars have 3.4 only Gen 2 cars have 3.6 only You can tell the difference immediately via the headlights Note the Gen 1 has the headlights which run all the way through the front bumper Gen 2 raises back up for the fog light section

POST 3Original post

You can decode the stamp on the side of the engine block to determine if it's a 3.6 or 3.4 with the following google books link page from Porsche 996 The Essential Companion: Supreme Porsche

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you for your reply Mike, it confirms my thoughts for an early 2001 build. I do appreciate your prompt reply.

POST 5Original post

Try this decoder: I find it fun and informative. http://www.renntech.org/images/vin_decoder/PorscheVINDecoder.html Result = 3.4-Ltr, 300-bhp, Flat 6-Cyl, 6-Sp

POST 6Original post

Also for the upgrade you get a glovebox in the gen 2! Thats helps justify the approx 2ook  outlay!

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
