I think we are going to be "beta testing" for Porsche a little more than I anticipated.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

12 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

I noticed something today under my 997 that looks like an oil leak, but a very minor one. I thought I would post the pictures below to see what everyone thought about the leak. Is it serious or just inherent to a flat 6? On this wide angle you can see that it is just a few drops, most of which appear to be old. So based on these, what do you guys think? Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

POST 2Original post

While the air-cooled motors of yore were famous (or infamous) for their propensity to drop oil on the garage floor, which necessitated the addition of turbo lower valve covers, etc. - these now motors should not leak, period. From that part of the motor, it could be anything. I don't think it's an RMS leak though - those seem to be more centrally located, with the telltale drops centered under the car - might be a cam cover leak near the rear (remember, the motor faces backwards)... Get it looked at. brad

POST 3Original post

Thanks! I was afraid I was going to have to take it in. Of course I would notice it on a weekend right before I have to go out of town for the week.

POST 4Original post

With the 9A1 there should be less reason for oil leaking compared to the M96/97 since there is no intermediate shaft, and the case has fewer pieces. I was hoping it was just cosmoline, but in the full size pictures it clearly looks like oil. Beez is right, needs to be looked at sooner rather than later. I think we are going to be "beta testing" for Porsche a little more than I anticipated. There have already been a couple of PDK failures with the broken tranny sent back to Germany for autopsy. Keep us posted on the source of the oil leak, and many thanks for posting the problem with such good pictures.

POST 5Original post

How's the Cayman doing? Any water leaking in? Any oil leaking down? You wanted a 911..... :taunt: Just teasing. Take it in. There shouldn't be any leaking.

POST 6Original post

TX-KmanS has an '08 997, so he doesn't have the new 9A1 motor. brad

POST 8Original post

Hey, no worries... you are right though, it will be very interesting to see what's in store for the new motors... good or bad. It seems all Porsche motors have their foibles, I really hope there's nothing too terribly wrong with these. brad

POST 9Original post

HAHAHAHA!!! Cayman is doing fine, not a single issue. But your comment was too funny! :hilarious:

POST 10Original post

I took my car in today and the leak was caused by a faulty timing chain seal. They are getting the replacement part in tomorrow and I will be back on the road tomorrow. So far this seems like a quick and easy fix.

POST 12Original post

Glad to hear it's something simple. Gator Bite, very clever!
