A few guys have self installed but I think getting a pro to do the install is probably the way to go since tensioning the top is pretty important and I'm not sure the warranty covers self install.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

6 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 99 Cabriolet and it's time for a new top. I've searched the internet and found different vendors for tops ranging from $700 to $1,600 plus installation. Is the replacement a DIY project? (2 guys and a day in the driveway) Any suggestions on top material (German canvas vs. American)? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, Thanks BA

POST 2Original post

If I was buying a used 996 Cab, I'd prefer a genuine Porsche top or at least one made with OEM style materials. How long are you keeping the car? I had similar questions when my Boxster top needed replacement (simultaneously with me needing to sell the car) In the end, I sold the car with the bad top and let the next owner decide I would think that replacement is DIY able, just comes down to having the time, tools and patience to do it yourself.

POST 3Original post

I bought a top from GAAH (Mailorder) and had it installed by a local shop - If you plan to upgrade to a glass window you will also need to have the head liner replaced. Mine has been on for two years and looks like the factory original.

POST 4Original post

where are you located? If we know where you are, we may be able to provide a solid shop in the area that can do the work.

POST 5Original post

There are two sources most people check out for tops, GAHH.com and Autotopsdirect.com I've read that they both offer the same tops. For some unknown reason the Autotopsdirect tops are slightly cheaper. Both offer a 5 year warranty. I've been doing some investigating of my own for my 2002 996. A few guys have self installed but I think getting a pro to do the install is probably the way to go since tensioning the top is pretty important and I'm not sure the warranty covers self install. Any good installers in NJ, NYC, CT area?

POST 6Original post

A thread I found on the Boxster forum where they discuss the GAHH and AutoTopsDirect tops. GAHH Top, Engine Access - 986 Forum - for Porsche Boxster Owners and Others
