Porsche Headlight Retrofit [from CAD, prototyping to finish) - Page 9 - 986 Forum - The Community for Porsche Boxster & Cayman Owners

I am currently designing a set of Porsche headlights for my guard red boxster 986 and thought it would be cool to share with other members as I go along with the built. I will be using the famous clear BOSCH headlights found on most Porsche Boxster 986 year 2002-2004. P/N: 986 631 131 14 and 986 631 132 14. I've ordered a spanking NEW set of those and likely to receive them this Thursday (if FedEx is not lying to me). The first step is to design a custom projector shroud (aluminum) for the aftermarket bi-xenon projectors that I got. Next will be to make a sleeve (1mm PVC cylinder) that goes from the shroud down to the stock reflector. The goal with this design is to ensure that there is no light or any glare coming out from the back of the headlight. I need 1 (one) source of light coming from the projector lens alone. In other words, I am after a quality beam of light. As you can see from my initial CAD design, I am borrowing the Carrera GT headlight style for the projector's shroud design, but using a 2.5" lens instead of the stock GT Carrera huge 3.5". I'll post more pictures and what I am doing soon enough. I'll be turning the stock aluminum in the lathe and carry out 4-axis CNC operations on the shrouds as soon as this coming weekend. Below is the initial CAD work. The black dish holding the whole assembly is the OEM chrome reflector found in the BOSCH headlight (to be soon painted in matte black). It will look better when all assembled in the headlight no worries!

lol Madmods, flattering thank you. I was a big fan. I've heard from someone who knows Madmods very well that he received serious threats from a member (by PM) and one of those sadly included a death threat. From his posts & info, that same member managed to work things out and tracked him down to where he works. Unfortunately he sent additional threats using that channel. To be on the safe side Madmods decided to ghost his posts (and all details) including himself until this gets resolved. I was told he had to do the same thing on another forum he is member of (a working dog training forum). I still haven't received the clear headlights. Customs clearance seems to be an impediment and take longer than I thought it would. A bit of progress. I've started on the shroud prototype for the projector. Took delivery of the AL 6061 T6 billet stocks at 19:00 and had to spin one of them on the lathe that same evening! The high pitch and regular techno beats those machines makes is excellent for relaxation Here goes a few shots... classic entertainer Here goes the shroud, unfinished. Completed the 4th axis gcode and cutting. Needs a bit of adjustment so I'll have to run another prototype unit before doing the real thing next week. This proto is really to set the cutters, CNC machining gcode, and test the materials before doing the 'real pair'. When you have your stuff ready and all properly tested, things goes much faster when you do the real part. This will also assures that both sides will be identical. Got the shroud clear anodized for 60min and paint sprayed it with VHT High Temp spray paint (Nu-Cast Aluminum P/N VHT SP995). The look & feel is the same as Arctic Silver and make the shroud look like a factory unit instead of a cheap machined shiny aluminum part. Anodizing is required to open the pores on the aluminum thus making a paint job permanent. It's becomes almost impossible to strip paint from anodized surfaces without the use of very strong chemicals (DRANO being one of them). Anodizing also makes the aluminum extremely strong and resistant to corrosion and further oxidation. The anodizing and high temp resistant paint COMBO is the only choice for a durable part inside of what appears to be an oven. Closed headlights can become very hot during summer days so materials especially paints needs to be selected with extreme care - especially when converting to black like I'm planning to do. VHT and OMP both does quality heat resistant spray paints, VHT having a wider range of colours tho. Both brands are very expansive but using them guaranty nothing will peel off or flake on a hot summer day. Somehow priceless for Porsche headlights imo. (camera flash was inappropriate here. Does look top quality when dry e.g. semi gloss arctic silver) Until this prototype dries fully, does take a good 24-36 curing time, I am testing a another VHT painted aluminum/anodized surface I've prepared yesterday. Now it's just a matter of adjusting the perfect intensity on the Laser for a high resolution quality etching job. Yes, I plan on having a circular lettering pattern on the front of the shroud. Makes them look "brighter" (but not necessarily smarter lol).

Next step, in the oven at 200degree for 72hrs nonstop. Hope those parts and etching, edges, etc will pass the test.

Should look just like the Carrera GT kit (right lol!) If not, it will be close enough. The idea of having a 30degree chamfer on the face is to simulate the "angel eye" effect. The light bouncing on the 30 degree edge make these quite unique looking - its just perfect and clean imo. Sneak peek below (taken on a 25watts desk lamp). Sick under HID trust me. Just too lazy to plug in the HID kit again, I've just put it away two hour ago. You'll get the idea I'm sure. I got a C-GT about 2 miles from my place and I always see this guy during the weekends or at the track. He drives me nuts and single-sided deaf each time he revs up next to me with his titanium straight pipes :/ Wait until he sees MY headlights lol

I'm building this GT headlight based on one specific bi-xenon assembly. Meaning you'll need the same kit: 2x GT style shrouds + 2x bi-xenon projectors. Still cheap no worries there. Not super high tech as you can see. Any retailed HID lighting can be used to fire up the kit I'm guessing. Let's talk when completed. I may send this design to a manufacturer if a few of the 986 and 996 guys are interested. For now let's hope all turn up to be what it should Wish me luck.

Very much alike but not the same. The GT's has two angel eye effects on its shroud, mine will be limited to one. Not a huge fan of super bright front-end anyway. Reusing the main source of light for the angel eye makes it what it is indeed! I certainly agree with your "elegant" point.

looks good i've been looking for a way to convert my 987 foglights to good LED like modern porsches have. Cayman LED Spars with Radiator Guards (fits 2006-2008) Group Buy - was making some for the cayman and offered to make some for the boxster but there wasn't enough interest

Finally done selecting the paint after completing a non-stop 67hrs cooking session at 225degree on two different unit. Without a peel or a single bubble. I'm pretty convinced the unit will be able to endure a few years of medium to hot weather. *Design update* I've designed a custom lens mounting system to achieve a simpler assembly. Therefore no more fitting PVC cylinder and gluing shroud ideas! What I got now is a solid and lightweight aluminum complete unit. Installation should be as easy as replacing a light bulb. Other than that not much more. I've shorten the shroud by 10mm making it look a bit more like the Carrera GT lens. It's now 30mm in length. Looks far better imo See through view. I haven't bothered to model the cutoff plate and the solenoid. They do not interfere with the design so pointless to waste time there. Sliced view of the assembly. The weird box inside is are only proportions and represents the compartment for the solenoid ie. the coil that activate the cutoff plate (high/low beams flip flap thingny). How the unit will be assembled. The four tabs of the skirt will be secured with SS304 M4 screws, shroud and lens mounted with 1,300 degree high temp industrial epoxy (very expansive stuff, and unforgiving). The back view. I've left two ventilation ducts. Unfortunately I am being told by the manufacturer of the projector that the unit can't be closed completely. This is to ensure the longevity of the HID bulb. Rendering of the assembly. This is the whole unit really. Clean and Plug-&-Play! Will update as it goes. Moving on to shopping for materials tomorrow, CAM work thursday and production on Friday eve and (very possibly) the weekend as well. We'll see how things pans out here.

Nine8six, do you have a Canadian car with stock Daytime Running Lights? The non-DRL folks are wiring low beam wires to the projector bulb and splitting off the high beam power to the cutoff shield solenoid. Easy. HOWEVER, the stock DRL uses the low beams, supplying reduced voltage to the lows in DRL mode, which would be an issue for the projector. HID Vendor: The reduced DRL voltage generally isn't compatible with aftermarket HIDs, but with some advanced configuring you should be able to set it up. If you have stock DRLs I'd love to know how your going to work it.

Looks as if everyone was enjoying doing nothing this weekend so I took this rare opportunity to caved myself and went on machining the shroud and projector skirts. I now have all the CNC gcode completed and optimized for the assembly. A bit of an embarrassing note; I've received the headlights that I've ordered from the USA and long waited for. However I've received the ones that I already have i.e. with the amber flashers. Wrote to the seller and the response I got was "they are the same as the one you ordered, same fit, what's wrong?". My guess is they are trying to get rid of old stocks so if you order a set of "clear" headlights please ensure they double-check and do request a confirmation before they pack/ship. Long story short, they accepted to take back the headlights and already FedEx'd me the correct order (all at their cost). Not fun but there you go..... looks like I'll be one week late in the completion of my project here. I've already have sold 3 kits for 996 owners (thanks to Takart), 1 for a friend who own a 986 just like mine and 1 kit for myself! Four kits already sold so I went off and bought a few more billet AL stocks. I'll be semi-busy machining those during the evenings of this week. ^ Raw product. CNC Gcode and Machining completed ^ TYPEII Anodizing in a sulfuric acid electrolyte powered @ 12.5amps for 60min ^ After black dye. I use TAC dye imported from Japan. Not cheap I know but because of other parts that we do here, we have no choice. Flashpoint on those dyes is 10years. We have all the colours! Hello Kitty PINK included ^ Off to the high temp VHT paint. The flash silver look really stand out.... looks like a factory unit. ^ Cooking for 120min at 200 degree to cure the paint. Very solid result... can't punch my finger nail in those when cool down for a few minutes. ^ Laser and chem etching job. Okay here I've settle for the white Porsche typeface. The black typeface can't be read and does make the unit look dirty from a few meter away, while the white and flash silver combo appears to be "very clean" at any distance. Porsche style? ^ The lens being epoxy with very high temp resin. I have access to some of the best epoxy in the industry here, mainly used in the aerospace industry. Although very expansive ($200/50ml) I occasionally get it free

The projector's mounting design is final. The prototype machining is completed and the assembly have been tested. Again, all carried out with emphasis on simplicity (Plug&Play), lightweight, and rigidity. A 40mm spacer between the projector and the headlight reflector was required. Without the spacer the whole assembly was hidden (tucked) inside the reflector. Now the shroud's features can be viewed from most angles; top, front and sides. Looks absolutely fantastic (pics of this coming soon). For now, here goes the model and other visuals of the projector mounting assembly. ^ This is how the kit comes really (and will ship). How easy! ^ The kit after anodizing. Yes I anodize everything but for good reasons: 1. the parts last a decade (min) without showing any sign of fading 2. the anodize layer is extremely hard, making the aluminum parts and their finishes indestructible 3. non-conductive surface. when anodized, the part lose its conductivity feature. A must when engineering parts near electrical systems. Now off the headlight preparations & painting. I'll update as soon as I can /

Wow, really great stuff! Can't wait to see how it turns out!

I was told that if you paint the cutoff plate, the lens will reflect that color. That said, if you paint your cutoff yellow, your lens will appear yellow. Pretty neat way to simulate devil eyes but without using additional power, LEDs and cabling! ^ Cutoff plate assembly. Just remove the two little screws behind the mounting bracket and everything falls apart. Do USE high temp paint, always. ^ Off to cooking (120min@ 225). Yes, I cook everything. Love cooking ^ That's what it looks like when reassembled in the projector. Should have gone RED devil eyes but I think the black mean looking eyes will be sufficient here. ^ reflector preps. The whole prep is super easy and takes about 2min to complete. ^ Pain job done. Do yourself a favor and paint ONLY with High Temp paint . Don't believe the others who said that it is not needed. The reflector will become hot and over time believe me the regular aerosol paints will start to peel off. Better be sure than sorry (just cost $20 more, not a crisis). Trick: paint the back face of the headlight's inserts instead of on top of it. The material is clear polycarbonate so the paint will show just as much as if you paint the top surface. The result is magic e.g. no orange skin spray can effects! The fog light aluminum parts can be removed and painted separately (only two little screws).

RE the devil eyes; I got the idea from : cutoff shield painting - Page 6 Long thread I know. Look up for the "white" lens.... very scary looking stuff

Surprise, I've installed the GT projectors in my old amber'ed headlights. I have a buyer for those set already (local guy here) so when I received the clear one, if I ever do, I'll retrofit those as well. Can't believe I had to wash the 986. Been sitting in the garage for the last 1.5month. I personally love the new look. What do you guys think of the new front-end? That is a LOT of red, apologies for the eye bleeding session

Yes did that yesterday nite. The 35w ballasts are perfect for city driving. Not too bright and very clean in all honesty. I use a 6k HID lamp and they appear to be 100% pure white (no blue'ish glare). Looks just as factory HIDs really. The high beams are a bit killer however. Not sure if this is safe but given you turn them off when someone comes up the opposite direction everybody should live a long life. I'll try to snap a few shots of the beams at night. I might need the help of my buddy here who is a pro photograph.... I've never had too much luck shooting at nite but will give it a try anyway (fingers crossed).

Jeff, I can't do this publically not being a vendor. I would certainly hope to be able to sell out to fellow 986 owners by offering an identical (complete) retrofit kit, that is right. If there is a demand then I'll sponsor the 986forum by becoming one. Can't find any details about this anywhere at the minute You are right. The seller selling this range of projector calls them morimoto I believe. The manufacturer of the projector did the R&D already. I've researched on the materials only. Did you know that Porsche uses the very same Polycarbonate used to make the F22 Raptor cockpit top window? RE killer; you meant this all because of the headlights style right?! A's: GT2 front bumper, GT3 rear bumper, TA Style sideskirts and a AerokitII (knockoff) spoiler). All made of very cheap fiberglass! Had the front and rear bumpers custom made however, in 3mm thickness (ultralight) with a supplied epoxy resin. Others are the UDP, cold intake, and a full performance exhaust system. I get the car dialed in every seasons at my local circuit by a Pcar guru there. Got maps for each seasons.... cost more in fuel in cold months, and more air in summer time. Deleted a few things as well. Properly tuned, the 2.5l can become a fun little car, but not yet 'killer'

What's your secret on getting such nice clean and clear headlight lens without the yellowing from exidation? I have an 03 which have headlights newer than those, garage kept and it's yellowing... Please share. PS, headlights look great!

Cheers mate Same as yours Woodmans, I'm sure nobody can guess the year of your boxster. One thing for sure, the design of this car is timeless. Quoted from many members already but fun to reminded ourselves. Wheels are 8.5" (ET40) front and 9.5" (ET40) rear with 235/30-19 & 275/35-19 rubbers. The rear arrives flush to the fender but I like it with a 15mm spacer. The fender to wheel arch follow-up is what makes this car rear-end look badass imo. Don't flame me on the 19" and '97 model too quick.... the wheels are as light as the stockers Anytime mate. There is a US based member who is looking at retrofitting his but doesn't have time to carry the job and want to send me his headlights. Can I send a kit to you (gift included) and he sends you his headlight for a retrofit job by you? Not far from you. He is happy to support financially I believe - send me a quote if interested. A bit savage but there you go: 1) Wet sand with #1200 abrasive paper (carbide) (15min per headlight) 2) Wet sand with #2000 (30min per headlight - if you can't find #2000, ask a local jewelry shop where they get theirs) 3) Use a rotary pad/machine and buff them with the Maguire Headlight Restoration kit (a good 30-45min per headlight). Do this in a hot environment..... as in don't let the polycarbonate cool down when buffing them for the whole period. It's a loooong and painful 2.5hrs job (lol) but as you can see, once done you won't be able to make the difference between an old unit and a NEW one

Did you remove the reflector bowl to paint it? I don't see how to remove it, and I don't want to break anything trying. Guess it can be painted in place, but I'd rather remove it if it's not too much trouble. I will use VHT high temperature ceramic flat black paint for this.

I didn't. And I was happy to paint on the unit just in front of the bowl. When reassembled you have a 3/4" gap between the bowl and the headlight's insert and that also needs painting. Just lift the bowl to its highest position using the headlight adjustment HEX screw (lower one) so that the spray can reached under the bowl. That did the trick for mine. If you really need to remove it, the assembly main mount screw is located behind the PIN connector. The connector has to be removed first (two screws, top/bottom). That's as far as I can help, I didn't removed mine so I don't know how much more effort there is after that main assembly screw. Careful, the assembly seems to be mounted on a snap/ball joint system. If your headlight is aged you don't want to pry anything there. PE material stiffen with age... better to just let it be (100% safer). Flat black is by far tha best choice for a sport looking headlight, I couldn't agree more. But you will have to remind yourself to never park the front-end in direct sunlight. Not sure of the exact heat tolerance of the Porsche headlight but I know that matte black and sunlight are not good friends. I'd say if the car is garaged and occasionally driven, then Go-Go flat black. If not (e.g. DD) Satin Black is the safest. I couldn't find any flat black in high temp here (for some reason). Satin finish only, which is closer to matte than gloss. I was quite surprised with the result but of course not 100% satisfied

Small detail. Read from the pro at HiDplanet : The Official Automotive Lighting Forum that some paints react to the chrome material used on some reflectors. So don't take the chance and sand the chrome finish off your bowls before applying your paint. Literally take 5 min per headlight with a #600 grit abrasive paper. The chrome is so burnt out by the halogen' heat that it comes right off - was a good sign that this had to go before painting

Porsche 986 & 996 Headlights - Bi-xenon HID conversion The process of converting one headlight involves: Opening the headlight Paint application preparations and painting Installing/wiring the projector, bulb and ballast Testing (electronics) On-vehicle pre-adjustments (leveling the projectors) Lens and headlight parts cleaning, and sealing the headlight Opening the headlight There are various DIY written on the subject of opening a headlight unit. However, and to be on the safe side, I do recommend using the oven solution instead of a heat gun. Both options are equally effective however special skills are required when using the latest. Hotspots can easily be made with a heat gun therefore being consistent and distributing the heat well around the headlight is paramount. In my opinion, the best DIY "on the Internet" was written by member BLK986 and can be found here: http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/34106-diy-hid-projector-install-instructions.html IMPORTANT NOTES: Cross reference to post below for "Opening Headlight and Installation". http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/49263-help-opening-headlights.html Patience is key; if the headlight's lens doesn't come off easy, STOP, and place it back in the oven for another heating session. Do NOT apply excessive force to pry off the lens. It does come off with medium to little efforts when properly heated. My personal experience; 10min@225F - I found out that it never works out on the first attempt. In my case one headlight opened after 2 (two) heating sessions and the other one opened after 3 (three) heating sessions. My first reaction when one came off was "that was way too easy". So do take your time and nothing will go wrong. IMPORTANT: When removed, NEVER touch the inner side of your lens with your fingers (e.g. greasy). It will be very hard to remove without the use of soaps or chemicals and you don't want that. Wear rubber gloves to prevent mistakes. Once the lens is removed, keep it clean by storing it inside a NEW plastic bag. Paint application preparations and painting Shall you decide to paint the interior of your headlight then black is the way to go. Matte black is by far the best finish selection however beware, matte is non-reflective and therefore 'could' generate very high heat when in direct sunlight. If your vehicle if often placed in direct sunlight, I'd recommend using satin black finish which also offers an equally modern sporty looking finish. Do NOT paint your headlight in gloss black, why? because nobody did that before! At last, the headlight unit can, and will, become hot therefore only use quality Heat Resistant Paints from a reputable manufacturer (VHT, OMP, to name a few). Preps are simple. Wet sand the internal polycarbonate lining and the reflector with a #600 abrasive paper. This will ensure that the paint will adhere properly to the surfaces and that no (potential) chemical reaction between the reflector's chrome finish and your paint will occurred. At last, clean the parts to be painted with a degreaser before applying the paint (if you aren't wearing rubber gloves in the process). Note that these preparations should be sufficient for a long lasting surface however the proper way would be to use a professional primer as based coat prior painting. Installing/wiring the projector, bulb and ballast Diagrams are provided with the kit in PDF format (sent by email). Those diagrams applies to both the Porsche 986 and Porsche 996 halogen headlight models. Those are: How to mount projector onto the reflector (including socket enlargement, methods and other basic preps). How to secure the bulb into the projector (spacer & spring mounting system). Wiring of the CANBUS ballast and projector's solenoid onto the headlight's low & high beam connectors. The installation is all very straight forward. I believe there is sufficient material and visuals in this thread alone to give one a good idea how these mounts to the reflector. Regardless of this, I will try my best to make the installation as easy as possible with diagrams and additional visuals. Testing (electronics) and Projector's level adjustments Before sealing the headlight, it is recommended to test all features of the headlight on a workbench. Those can be tested using a 12v DC source with a minimum current capacity of 10amps (e.g car battery, motorcycle battery, or rectifier will do). You need to ensure that 1. your ballasts are lighting up the bulbs and that your solenoid is activated effectively. Both can be tested by connecting the respective +/- wires onto 12 volts. Once everything has been successfully tested and operational, you can move on to leveling the projectors. Leveling the projector requires 1. your new bi-xenon projector to be installed and 2. the hid bulb to be operational. What you need to ensure is that the cutoff line/beam is horizontal with the world. Two methods are available for this adjustment. The first one is to place the headlights in the vehicle and the other method is indoor while having the headlight leveled on a table and facing a wall. Indoor method: with the lens and polycarbonate lining removed, you will see a flat surface on the bottom of the headlight housing. This is your vehicle's horizontal reference. With your headlight placed onto a table, level that flat bottom surface with the world using a mini-spirit level. Once leveled, secure the headlight unit onto your table using tape. If you do not have a mini-spirit level, and only have the standard (long) model, simply place a perfectly square object on the headlight's flat bottom surface and take the level reading from the top of that object. Once your headlight is leveled and secured in place on a table, slightly loosen the projector's socket screw, power-up the ballast, keep your eyes on the wall, and turn the projector with one hand until you are satisfied with the horizontal level of the cutoff line. When satisfied, tighten the socket screw with a pair of long nose pliers - and all done. I've applied Locktite (medium strength) to the socket screw but I don't see this as 'mandatory'. Also, I personally prefer the indoor method. There are less chances that the projector moves when removing the headlight from the vehicle however both methods are equally effective. Lens and headlight parts cleaning, and sealing the headlight Lens cleaning: You've never touched the lens with your fingers however when removing the old silicon sealant, some particles and other dust may have found their way onto the inner side of the lens. To clean it, simply blow compressed air on it or use a clean microfiber cloth and HOT distilled water ONLY. Do not use tap water as this will leave mineral residues on the lens. You'll want the water to evaporate quickly so do this in a warm and clean environment (heated bathroom for instance!). Once done, place the lens back inside a (surgically-cleaned) plastic bag until it is ready to be installed onto the headlight. I've used a plain and cheap black garbage bag (they are folded air-tight style by the manufacturer). The next step is to remove the remaining old silicon from the headlight housing. I've used a flat head screw driver to get rid of most of it and finished the job with a stainless steel brush (get one that is the same size as a toothbrush). Next is to remove dust and particles from the headlight's housing, reflector and from the polycarbonate lining/insert. Assuming the paint had time to cure (2-3 days), use the same microfiber and distilled water to clean the headlight housing, insert, reflector and cablings (everything!). Use a long & slim plastic object to gently push the microfiber under the reflector and on its sides to get rid of any dust hiding there while being careful not to scratch the new paint job. When satisfied, again, hop everything in clean plastic bags to keep dust away until you are ready to seal all this back together. Sealing back the headlight is the easiest job of all. Fill the sealant compartment around the headlight housing to half-full with RTV silicon, and install the lens. Very simple. Check with your RTV silicon manufacturer RE curing time. 48 hrs at room temp should be more than sufficient. Hardware Specifications (to be continued soon) [Draft: those are ongoing notes - I will update these regularly and publish installation diagrams when completed]

We drove all the way down to Shanghai, China, to disturb the downtown Saturday's night-life. Took the girls for hotpot and karaoke for a few hours. A detour by the industrial park to street race a few miles is always mandatory when we go out. All good fun (I'm 38 years old by the way, embarrassing I know!). Can't be seen in the in the picture (+1 996 and +1Cayman) later we were five Pcars roaring & launching traffic lights downtown @ 02am, in front of the coppers and all...... free pass, broken police smiles, thanks to PORSCHE for that! Of course the pcar with the sickest headlights and meanest looking frontend was mine (I was told by the boyz).

Nice! I never understood the driving mentality there, after many trips to China. I think it's a completely different skill set including luck and guts. How they navigate major intersections with no traffic lights is something that must be experienced to be believed. Did you buy the car in Canada? When you return, will you bring it back?

Great.... I just washed the Boxster this afternoon and covered it back in the garage until its next pcar go out day. Will make a "video" of the next drive out so you can see that halogen is now officially phased out, and that HID rules! Cutoff line is pretty standard for all bi-xenon projectors mate. You want to Google Image: "Morimoto Mini H1 cutoff line" for examples. Pattern is identical to the one on the pic below: The only advantages of my 'custom' projector against the stock Morimoto Mini H1 is the lens on mine are placed dead centered with the projector's bowl and its beam of light (factory quality). I machine those parts with 0.05mm precision/tolerance. The original projector comes with a cheap plastic lens housing with (often) uneven tabs all around (see pic below), or bent, and that can shift the lens a bit too much on some units. I've measured a few units and couldn't find a pair that had the same focal/lens alignment. Some are okay, some we're off by as much as 1.5mm. This can make the focal and horizontal cutoff line adjustment a PITA or even impossible. ^hmmmmm .... no thanks! The mounting spacers and the socket nut/threads I provide are also machined to same high precision believe it or not. It makes everything pretty easy to line-up for the end installer

A member PM'ed me (actually, blasted me) regarding my above reply to member Ohh my. The cutoff line question was more toward 'quality' reason and my reply was perhaps less than acceptable (fair enough). He also reminded me that I didn't specifically needed the 986 to prove that the cutoff line of my custom projector is standing up as much as the design/concept. Well there you go. I've assembled a kit fired it up using a rectifier so I can shoot a few pics. Please don't comment on my photography skills.... that is something I need practice a lot on :/ Note that all projectors that I make are tested in a same fashion way. The cutoff line (or FOCUS) is adjusted so that the projector can be shipped with a sharp and crisp 'factory" quality line. Having a quality cutoff line is also mandatory for beam alignments when on the car. Other aftermarket (or plastic made!) bi-xenon projectors can sometime be a pain due a low quality (uneven) cutoff line. Hence the reason it is important for some to ensure that this is taken care of (of course it was). Out of context: with a bi-xenon HID projector, there is nothing better to see ahead of you when you drive on bumpy surfaces. The cutoff line moves up/down like a laser scanner. I love love love it. Hard to explain in words but it kinda remind you how precise the Porsche suspension system is. Fancy set-up! (screw halogen forever for me). Other features worth mentioning, and important for all responsible Porsche car owner, is the selection of a HID ballast. I am using the latest in terms of technologies available commercially. It is made by the most reputable manufacturer here in China and was recommended to me by the local professionals in the HID trade. It is a full Digital 35w canbus ballast with arc stabilizer, very low heat, protection features and EMC (Electro-Magnetic Compatibility). Meaning you can run the 20,000+volts right over your mobile phone and it will still receive and make calls without a single buzzing or circuit damage. Not cheap but it's Magic and mandatory for a Porsche car imo. No more flicking and annoying loud "ticking" sound noise coming out of your speakers when turning ON the headlights! I am very satisfied with this also being sorted. If you have any question I'll be happy to answer them. Apologies if the above reply wasn't conclusive to what it was meant to achieve. I am normally very humble about things in life but these are simply the "Ultimate Bi-Xenon Porsche projectors" (Carrera GT style as bonus!). I do these along with many other motorcycle and car aftermarket parts as a "hobby" and only would want to share the successes with other 986 owners like myself. It's not for profits believe me as running heavy CNC equipment for hours, carbide cutters, materials, imported dyes, using the best chemicals and paints, CO2 laser tubes, electricity, coolants, etc etc.... it all adds up very quickly. Profits are justified however very insignificant - it's just for fun really Be cool! ^ Here we go. My testing set-up. Yes it's a "3.6". I'll swap the burnt LED display in a few years maybe. This rectifier is getting olddd but still very good. ^ Here goes the cutoff line nice and crisp. Includes everything (arc and cutoff). Good enough for me and my Porsche car, it should be good enough for anyone (I am a picky PITA). ^ Another view from. Flat wall (3 meter far). ^ Try this with a substandard ballast and let me know if your phone still works after sparking them ON and OFF

Temp of the ballast after a good 30 min of continuous operation. Very low heat generated - that alone is an excellent proof of quality. Unlike previous hid ballast versions that used to run up to almost 90ºC (200ºF), or like Litronics(!), those can be hidden in the headlight's back compartment. Makes a perfect and clean headlight unit.

Here goes a few shots of the complete set. Plenty of good fun and without being shy saying that those are the best looking Porsche headlights on the Internet ATM ^ The bezel/shroud face is fully customizable to your taste. Typeface can be changed and wording as well. Choice of paint or anodizing reflections styles available. ^ Shall you decide to go creative-crazy and want to dremel everything, plenty of abrasive wheels there. Also, I got a few emblems (badge) left so you are also helping me getting rid of those by getting a kit.

Thanks. My other decision is what color for the ring, but I will probably stick with the silver and keep the reflector stock. My car is Lapis Blue and I am sure the black would look great, but I think stock also looks great. I even kicked around the idea of a blue ring to match the Lapis, but long term, I think stock may be the way to go. Just thinking out loud. Any thoughts?

Dunno mate. bear in mind it will never be 100% black during day time anyway, more like 50% gray with the sunlight reflections bouncing on/off the lens and all. That what's mine turned up to be if you look carefully. Just perfect design-wise. Night-time tho.... this is where this thing turns into a beast of its own Day time you are looking at getting something like below. A brand New 2014 Boxster! If you asked me, I'd say go for satin-black headlight interiors. With the outer silver trim left alone it will look perfectly balanced (your car color is already dark). The ring in silver - elegance first in your case. If you had e.g. spoiler, side skirts, the futurist Gt3 front bumper, kinda style, then maybe I'd say go for the eccentric blue bezel. Hope this helps a bit. Ask around what your friends and family think.... they know you better than I do!

Latest work in anodized Zanzibar red. Custom made for a member here. This one was a challenging one as the color is made of Red (3parts) Yellow(1 part) Bleu (1 part). One of every anodizer's nightmare! Had to drop by the P dealership to look at their factory color pallet to try to understand what am I dealing with. Zanzibar is not red and it is not orange.... kind of a mix in between (e.g. sunset orange). The color reflects orange'ish in day light and red'ish in night shades. Extremely hard to achieve given anodizing are often limited primary colors. One of my most challenging project so far. We should start seeing these HOT bi-xenon projectors on owners' car very soon I'm hoping

No worries! Other PM replied RE leveling; that would become pretty redundant, if you go for the clear halogen set anyway. Conn-wise, you simply need to tap into the low & high beams' 12 volts circuit for the kit to shine. Litronic or not. Side note.... someone is currently retrofitting his 996TT's headlights (already litronic and different style of headlight I believe) with a set of my CGT style projectors. He said that it is very doable. I've never seen the litronic housing myself but it appears that you can convert the litronic unit as much as the halogen. Again, I am not entirely sure not having seen them myself. Minor problem: I only have the LHD cutoff bi-xenon projectors available atm. My mate in Japan got all the RHD projectors that I could source from my supplier here, 14kits (28 projectors). All gone. I will receive more RHD in about one week. How to connect the kit to your existing headlight's circuit:

Fred, do the original high beams still work then after the solenoids are connected, i.e. are the solenoid wires spliced in? Or are they redundant and the only highs are from the projectors?

You could, but that would be redundant...and the projector would block some of the beam anyway. It would be similar to using a flashlight in daylight

I left the chrome finish on the reflector bowls so that the halogen high beams would continue to work well. The problem with xenon is that it takes time for the bulbs to warm up, so they can't be used for flash to pass if they are off when flashed. I wanted to preserve that capability. I wired a standard automotive relay across the low beam, with a diode across the coil as is common practice. The positive lead going to the high beam is cut and connected to the common terminal of the relay. The normally closed terminal of the relay goes to the bulb side of the high beam wire that was cut, and the normally open terminal of the relay goes to the projector coil. The other wire from the projector coil is grounded. So it works like this - when the low beam is off and the high beam is flashed, the halogen bulb is used, as it was originally. When the xenon low beam is turned on and the high beam is flashed, the shutter is opened. After running the low beam for 30 minutes, the ballast is at 91 degrees, and the front of the projector is at 132 degrees. Sorry about the crummy picture. You can see the relay in the middle of the picture, on the right. It fits inside near the white adjustment knob, held in place with a small piece of industrial velcro.

Norm - See above post from MitchSF. Brilliant isn't it. You'll get far better advice from both Particlewave and MitchSF than I can possibly give you on the conn-wise subject. Personally, I went to lazy route and simply left the high beam's H7 lamp in there and connected the solenoid to it. Like MitchSF mentioned, flashing during day time is required and this H7 halogen does a good job for that. However, Particlewave is pretty accurate saying it will become useless in night time. The projector xenon's high beam is brightning up the hell out of everything when the solenoid is activated (high beams ON). Brutal. Outperforms any stock 55w halogen's high beams so you shouldn't miss it too much and very possibly, forget all about old-halogen tech for the rest of your life as well

Here (in Poland) daytime running lights are required year-round. Most people just drive with their low beams on all the time. How would your projectors work in a situation like that? Any overheating? I have a set of clear lights that I have to polish up and was thinking of retrofitting your kit at the same time. I'm still not 100% clear on the procedure, though, so if you can please PM with the instructions.

Nice! Greetings from Shanghai Paul Changing the xenon bulbs regularly will be your main concern. The manufacturer of the xenon bulb I am including in the kit rates them @ 2,000hrs. That said if you use your car 2 hrs per day, you are likely to need a xenon bulb refresh every two years (according to the manufacturer). In your case, I'd say changing them annually and they should perform at peak efficiency all the time. A pair of H1 Xenon bulbs (35watts ) will cost you a huge $20 each year. Not a crisis! Bear in mind the complete assembly is made of aerospace 6061 T6 grade aluminum. That type of aluminum conducts heat about 2000 times faster than plastic (PE). The heat generated from the xenon bulb is not a problem and dissipated across the bowl (cast aluminum), the skirt and the bezel evenly. The whole thing effectively acts as a massive heat sink. The assembly runs at 45°C(min) 55°C (max) @ 60min operation. In Fahrenheit that would be 113°F(min) 130°F (max). Ballasts can sustain the heat they are rated at which is between -40°C ~ 105°C (or 220°F). I've toasted a pair overnight in a enclosed environment (4"X6"X2" toolbox) and picked them up in the morning @ 54°C (130°F). So those passes my quality standards and comply with what the manufacturer swears by. A bad quality ballast can, and will, go up to 80°C ~90°C (175~200). Regarding the DIY steps required to get this done, please let me know what procedure(s) you are not clear on and I'll do my best to explain in details.

Sanding, sanding, sanding... Those ridges in the bottom of the reflector are a PITA. 60 grit sandpaper speeds it up some, but I still wound up with 4 bloody knuckles. Almost there.

My headlights stink. They are yellowed, burned, dead halogens. even after polishing the outside, which was a vast improvement, the best thing that can be said about them is "disappointing". This is a super interesting thread, and everyone posting on the thread knows whats going on. As an outsider looking in, can you tell me what the heck are your plans for the headlights your sanding? Haha! Thanks, the knuckles are recovering. I'm sanding the reflective chrome finish off of the reflectors because I'm going to paint them black. Paint doesn't stick real well to that shiny stuff It looks pretty slick all black with these projectors installed (see pg 3-4 of this thread). I'm hoping to be done by tomorrow, but holiday prep may cut into the project. Definitely will be done by Sunday... Are the outer lenses on your halogens ruined also? The inner lens can be ditched with this upgrade

Yeah, after 120K and years in the hot Texas sun they are pretty much fried, inside and out.

Lights are almost finished. Last night I put them on the car without lenses to check all functions, and to align the beams. As much as I thought they were adjusted correctly using the horizontal line on the projector bowl as a guide, they were noticeably out of adjustment. After setting the adjustment and tightening the nuts, I locked them in place with some Goop, which is a flexible adhesive that dries harder than silicone. The large plastic trim and metal reflectors were painted with VHT high temperature ceramic black pearl paint. Other than the switching relay I described in a previous post, no other changes were made. I used an LED in place of the small parking light bulb. It compliments the 6000k xenon bulbs much better than the Edison bulb and would probably make a nice driving light because the white light floods the reflector bowl, although I doubt that I will make wiring changes for that to function. I did think about using angel eyes mounted to the front of the reflector bowl, but I decided against it. That would be the perfect place for them, but they would be impossible to service once the lens is glued in place and I don't think that's the look I want to go along with this very conservative design. By the way, the car is Arctic Silver. The only work left to do is to blow out any remaining dust, glue the lenses, and then give them a light polish. I bought them used and both have very light scratches. Then I'll wax them and apply Lamin-X film. The beam is amazing on these projectors, with a well-defined cutoff that is much better than the lights on our A5 and new X3.

Probably best to read this thread from the beginning. There are many options and many ways to do this. The lens in front of the reflector on one of my lights was cracked and yellowed, too. A previous owner installed one of the gold tipped high power bulbs. I think they are called Silverstar. They run much too hot for these lights. As particlewave mentioned, the lenses are not used with this conversion.

Sorry for the delay in posting pictures everyone. There were some internal rumors about being internationally transferred that caused me to put to the car on hold for a few weeks. The headlights have been in for 3-4 weeks now and they run great. The only downside is that it does effectively eliminate the high beams. I'll wash the car tomorrow and get some pictures up before it goes into the shop to get new speakers installed.

Please ignore the mess...it's been a long week A few finishing touches and time to close up Btw, the last time I opened these headlights for the first projector install, I used way too much sealant and they were a huge PITA to open this time and I damaged the outer lip a bit near the fog lights on both units. Nothing that will show or affect the seal, but not pretty and I'm a little disappointed with myself

And just for good measure, I added a single (very bright) multicolor LED to each shroud so that I can change the devil eye look once in a while or just enhance the neon green They don't necessarily have to be on or even hooked up, but just in case I want them... They will be powered by the running/parking light circuit and hooked up to a relay so that they shut off when the headlights are on to preserve life (wouldn't be visible with headlights on anyway).

Let me share some top secret development with you: Meet the NEW & MIGHTY Nitestalkers High Performance Bi-Xenon Projectors (no panic, the brand name is pure fiction for the moment LOL) A few asked whether it was possible to add Angel Eyes to the kit. Especially the dudes based in Japan. I have a friend there who is marketing those projectors at the moment and its doing rather good - as if I wasn't busy enough with real life! Those Angel Eyes will finally come "Optional" with the kit. The standard model without angel eyes will remain the main product of course but like every other products, it's always good to have some options. So there you go (we designed this a week or two ago). Pure coincidence. Enjoy! How it works: ^ 2mm*4mm slots are CNC'ed into the bezel. 32x of them. ^ I've designed a compartment to isolate the light emitted from the LEDs. This will be filled with high temp silicon over the LED ring circuit board. We don't want this to pollute the lens color which is often pitch black, or clear viewed from an angle. ^ I simply use a "Pure White" circular LED board and install a matte finish acrylic filter (see in greenish) to push out a colorful glow (red, yellow, green, etc.....). The matte finish acrylic is to prevent the nasty artificial LED glares so they look clean and soft looking. ^ Those are the ring that I am getting manufactured in OD80mm (the internals only, we throw away the plastic casing). It will be a 32x led board powerd by a miniature/external controller (kept away from the heat). The board/LEDs will dissipate their heat at the Bezel's 6061 T6 aluminum so no heat built-up (unlike common plastics!). The Angel Eyes mini controller connects to the Parking Light's +/-. Easy! ^ Using the filter design/concept, not only it cleans off the glares, colors are also unlimited. We will offer those in PINK, VIOLET, ORANGE, BLACKLIGHT, etc etc ect Like it?

Mitch, we actually just retrofitted a set of 996's this weekend here and borowed Particlewave's Devil Eyes idea (as he posted above). We mounted the (rgb)LED onto the solenoid casing and it glows quite right. I kinda like the dim'ed effect of the devil eyes more than the angel eyes (my pref anyway). Here's one or two...

Just a quick update on where I am at with the development of the Ultimate High Performance Bi-Xenon Projector for Porsche 9X6 . With Angel Eyes of course The COB LED boards are finally in and I am now preparing a bigger aluminum mold that I will be using to make the acrylic filters. The artificial LED glare is gone for info.... that was achieved by simply using a white filler mixed with the acrylic. Makes the filter cloudy and therefore acts as a perfect light diffuser. Great success with that. Below are some visuals of the real deal. Green ranks high on my list of favorite color to design with so no questions as why green was the color used to develop the prototype! It happens that the other color are far more interesting (yellow, blue, red, white). The red being simply the sickest, and the white being the smartest/cleanest of all imo. The final product will be ready on Dec 20th and ready to ship out on Dec 23rd. As usual I am accepting custom-work requests on those so contact me if you are interested in a kit. ^ This one above has a thick (2.5mm) acrylic diffuser installed. It doesn't glow much but emits strong enough to see the light tunneling out of the 32x slots around the bezel. 10x times more sexier than the BMW's angel eyes, unique design as well

I applied the Lamin-X film today and installed the lights. Everything works perfectly. The spots on the lenses are water under the film, it needs a few days to set. I'm still thinking about wiring the LED parking lights to an ignition source so they would work as angel eyes/driving lights.

Christmas time I switched them over to red and snapped this pic in between ...and a pic of the little rocker switch board. The tiny 12V relay shuts the devil eyes off when the headlights are on (devil eyes are only on in the parking light switch position).

I looked around a bit on ebay; particlewave, do they have the projectors you used without the HID kit?

epapp, on behalf of Particlewave, the projector that he is using is the 2014 model and yet to be available in the states. See pics below. We get them directly from the manufacturer (a few km away from my backyard here). Brutally outperforms the factory xenon of BMW, Mercedes and the Porsche litronics. I believe some of you guys knows them better under the name of "Morimoto MH1". You should start to see that new 2014 model when stocks of the previous 2013 MH1 runs out in the states and elsewhere. In a meantime I would be extra careful buying those off eBay as they seem to be a lot of knockoffs (copies) of those Morimoto's MH1 for less than $50. Those knockoff are $8/pair here locally (for your info). I've seen them... and they poorly sux If you need a set of those Ultimate just let me know, I can spare you a set anytime. ^ The left-side is the one I provide with the kit (2014 Ultimate model) and the right-side is the 2013 model of the MH1. * the eBay knockoffs outputs even less than what you see on the right. But again for fifty bucks (half goes to eBay lol), not much can go wrong really

I've read all 10 pages and must say I am impressed by your excellent execution of this conversion. However I did pick up that when painting the light housings black you can't/shouldn't park in the sun ? I'm in the deep South and we get sun in the summer that will melt your face . So if your car is a daily driver and it sits in the exposed parking lot at your employer all day what's going to happen ? Will the housings get damaged from heat ? Will the lense be damaged ? I am interested in your kit but the exposure to sun may be a deal breaker for me Anyone have any " sun " experience with these ? And if the black is a no go what about staying with the OEM silver/chrome finish ? I assume that is OK just like the original bulbs ?

Thanks for reading and for the compliment! If you are likely to park your Boxster facing South-West on a daily basis then the trick is to use "Satin Black" instead of a pure flat black paint. The satin black will reflect 50% of the light. Use a quality high temp paint and your headlights will be just fine. VHT does a very nice satin black, looks very modern e.g. 90% black, 10% grayish. This is a subject that was discussed here on the Chinese retrofitting forum here and everyone told me I was full of BS for saying that flat black wouldn't work under the hot sun (they are maybe right, what do I know!). Hundreds have done it on their other cars and never got a hot spot/burn years after their retrofit. Like you guys we also do get these (hell-like) burning sun days here in Shanghai. Their reasoning is; if you use the VHT(-like) quality high temp paint e.g. the same they paint headers with, then all should be well protected under there. Hope this helps a bit mate

Just sharing here what I found on another forum. Simple retrofit from a poor halogen to a sharp HID night set-up. No black paint! Esthetically I think the results are equally great. The owner of this P car left the inside of the headlight factory-color, install projectors and tinted the amber flashers with 3M's 35% window paper. Simple but very nice. ^ Sharp beam, clean, stylish, what else... forgot

Can someone post up a picture of the HID's on at night against a wall? I feel as though the way the curvature of our headlights is shaped, takes away some of the sharpness of these projectors versus a headlight housing on a bmw where it's lens which is nearly parallel to the front of the projector. Our lens have a sharp angle and the light has to shine through an angled lens. which is close to 45 degrees.

Mate, you do realize that our Porsche car headlight's lenses are made of some of the best polycarbonate you can find/make today right? They wouldn't last more than a decade on public roads if they were made of substandard poly resin. The elliptical phases aren't affected by the material Porsche uses I reassure you. You can quickly do a test at home if you want; e.g. just aim a hand-held laser beam through the lens. I don't disagree/question you at all with regards to the material of the lens. Just a personal curiosity about the effects of the angled lens. Yes pointing a laser through the lens perfectly perpendicular should provide nearly a perfect beam on the other side. But what if you shined the laser at a 45 or less degree angle, is the beam the still the same? Just a question of optics. The reason why I asked for pictures is because I'm a light enthusiast and I like good optics, I follow HIDplanet and that's one of the picture that's always included, a picture against the wall. Yes, your craftman is great and I can appreciate how it looks, but I also want to see how badass and great these perform too.

RE light enthusiast, I see. HIDplanet have been a tremendous resource for my research, there are 2-3 guys (regulars) on that forum that knows their stuff quite impressively well. I am actually very grateful to one of them for having shared so much and helped me out in my quest of the unknown (in my case, as a new light enthusiast!). My secret, Ohhh my: Although those MH1 projectors are fine, they are not a "precision manufactured" item. The cheap injection molded plastic part used to support the lens often is OFF by millimeters (mind you, most is caused by sloppy assembly as well). Tabs holding the lens securely also tend to be left with flash around them shifting the angle on the lens in some case. It still makes it a "so-so" and affordable product and still working fine you'll say. However the cutoff line you will be getting is all based on luck... you may have a left side sharper than a right side, a shift of optics on the other, stuff like that. Read correct: you move the lens in-or-out by as small as 0.5mm and you screw up the focal point completely. And that is just NOT what real Porsche enthusiasts wants! The CNC precision equipment I use here allows me to machine the parts to very high tolerance. So I can take this package, break it out, I can very accurately 'position' the lens relative to the elliptical bowl to 0.02mm tolerance. In fact the elliptical is absolutely great on this new 2014 projector model (brutal and sharp beam). In other words, I have the freedom and ability to "dial-in" a very precise optical and "find that exact focal sharpness" for each and single projector that I make. The other secret is, I am able to reproduce nearly identical parts (again +/- 0.02mm tolerance). Making not only one of the best cutoff sharpness out there, but both Left & Right are identical. That is what I call Quality and the reason behind why I am not particularly shy to call this kit a "High Performance Bi-Xenon Projector retrofit kit for Porsche car". Ohhh my, it's laser scanner effect-like when you (bumpy) drive this thing in the dark, actually very addictive... feels clean and precise! Nothing to compare with litronic or those frosted bimmer hids [no additional comments here]. Not bad for a noob light enthusiast huh?

I believe you misunderstood my previous comment... But in reply to your post anyways.. As you may know, i'm soon going to be ordering a kit from you. I've been following this thread since the beginning and one of the main reasons why i'm selling my factory installed litronics is because of your detail to precision. My comment above is referring to the angle of the HID light and shining through the polycarbonate headlight lens at an angle. In your example of shining laser through the polycarbonate lens, i'm assuming you used a laser that was shined perpendicular to the lens creating a clean beam on the other side. Nah, even if you shine it at 89 degree angle to the lens it will go straight in. The poly is amazingly well vacuum i.e. no (read ZERO) microscopic air bubbles.... unlike in cheap Made in Asia polycarbonates. Seems to be the real deal. I bet the team at Porsche have already considered this optical angle when selecting/manufacturing their headlight material (all porsche cars have inclined lenses). actually, all other sport & super car manufacturers as well. Hey James. Nah the roads in China are some of the best in the world. 50% of them are <10years old. Sure some are much old however extremely well maintained. Mind you, a Shanghai private car plate (required for locals, and foreigners as well of course) cost US$13,492 (or CNY85,000). With 25million residents, many of those owning cars, believe when I say the dept of transport has a great financial support and deliver quite well in that respect. The inter-provincial roads/freeways being by far the best and coolest (not a single 1" wide crack in those). They use a sort of high abrasive asphalt -mix- with concrete. Those are the ones that my Boxster sees the most frequently really (monthly!). ^ We also have the ring in SH! Can't see clearly but there are 3 levels on that ring. This is the first time my little Porsche have seen human vomiting.... I was ramping down at over 150kmph (the guy who barf'ed in my car is not my friend anymore). I normally (rarely) never exceed legal speed limits... talking karma huh

Few of you guys requested some more info about the optional angel eyes kit RE how they sit the bezel, material used ect. Someone else reminded me about the theme of this thread, which is to document every steps taken in the making of those high performance projectors, w/ pictures of course! Fair enough I'll say ^ All starts with a completed bezel. In this case, the Great Gunmetal Gray style! ^ Once anodized and laser'ed with customer's custom script on the face, they are ready to be implanted an angel eye (lol) ^ Somebody is missing his early high school years obviously. However most material you see there have been fine selected and thoroughly tested. - 2mm thickness acrylic color filters - 0.1mm thickness photography LED light diffuser film (very expansive, $4 per sheet, doesn't change color due to heat or time, ultra thin and 100% opaque) - A set of COB LED angel eyes in white color - Top quality Thermally Conductive Epoxy Resin/filler (A+B) and application syringe. (I get this for free knowing someone close to me working in this industry haha) ^ In this case I'll be using a clear acrylic filter for white angel eyes. But I have them is pretty much all other colors! They all create a very soft but vivid light output. ^ I've tested many different types of angel eyes COB LED rings during the whole of December. Those are the best you will find in the world at the moment. The 90 LED are covered by a resin (no vibrations) and the circuit is built-in to the PCB. One LED goes off and you still have 89 working! This + a 2mm thick filter and you are certain that the angel eyes' light output won't be broken or affected by a burnt led. They are rated @ 20,000hrs and known as The Best in the industry. ^ They also come with the proper heat resistant wiring, both the angel eye and wiring passed tests @ ~300 ºF for 120min continuously (amazingly). Decent connection are in already place however everything gets re-enforced later with thermally conductive resin. ^ This is the cavity that is machined inside the bezel to accommodate the angel eye, the filter & the diffuser. ^ Assembling in order: 1) clear acrylic first 2) opaque diffuser second 3) angel eye third 4) Thermal conductive epoxy resin ^ Final assembly covered with a few drops of the thermally conductive epoxy resin. The thermo epoxy resin is rated @ ~500 ºF * ZERO light escape from behind there, no lens light pollution * Vibrations proof, no movements, no condensations, no hot spots along with effective heat dissipation materials. MAX temp emitted from the angel eye is 90~96 ºF (or 36 ºC). Very low! * Safe, stable and durable along with a stunning natural looking & diffused light output. The most advanced and simplest angel eye design you'll ever see. There you have it!

When the running lights are on but not the headlight switch my headlights emit a dim light. Is that from a small seperate bulb or do the hight or low beams get lit with reduced voltage through a resister? I was wondering if this is an issue for the projectors or if that is not the same circuit that the projectors use?

That dim light is a small running light, separate from the high and low beams. It is the smaller third bulb to the right in this picture and it's what we use to power the angel/devil eyes.

Ahaa, I was wondering about that, thanks for clearing up that question. I also wondered about the CANBUS Ballast. Does a 2001 Boxster S have a CANBUS connector that plugs into the Ballast? I thought I read some where that 2003+ only use the CANBUS stuff. I haven't replaced my burn't out low beam Halogen bulb yet as I'm getting ready to pull the trigger on these Projectors. Trying to figure out what would look best on a Black Boxster. I'm leaning towards the Silver or Red bezel, since I have Red calipers and Silver wheels. I'll have to do the pulsating red LED as well behind the lens to give it that "Dragon Eye" look at night. It should be hooked up with the security LED so that it does its thing when armed.

Those are a set of white angel eyes. Hate shooting at low ambient lighting... just never works. It does however give a good idea of that unique dotted pattern with the double reflection effect in the clear lens. The angel eyes are white themselves however some of the reflections have a very light blue'ish tint. Looks extremely modern. below is just an overview of what it would look like while having the parking light ON alone. Looks pretty slick with both angel eyes and HID turned on - should have pics of that coming soon.

Crono - I've recently seen those aftermarket headlights that you have. Unfortunately they are not serviceable like the oem Porsche headlights. The lens are "glued" to the housing (permanent). Genuine Porsche headlights uses a silicon base seal which makes it extremely easy to open or service. Your best bet is, if you are serious about upgrading to high performance projectors, is to find a set of (used) Porsche headlights and retrofit those instead. If your aftermarket headlights are still in good condition you could sell those and that should be more than sufficient to cover the cost of your entire retrofit (that incl a set of used Porsche headlights!). I want to try and create a breathing LED that is tied to the security LED so that when the security is armed a single red LED will illuminate the inside of the Projector cavity and the result should be a dim glowing pulsating "Breathing" visible in the projector lens. Seeing as I already have some TI ez430-2012 boards left over from my GoPro RF remote shutter project I figured it would be a fun little project to create "Dragon Eyes". Can't wait to see the full GT front end on your black box Hubert RE ballasts; the correct/intelligent way to mount them is as per Particleware's suggestion. I personally didn't bother and simply squeezed them "inside" the back of the headlight enclosure. Hey Norm Got the 25w LED tower with mini-built-in projectors as below for my high beam. Got the 25w for heat management. Although underpowered they are still stupid bright and output brilliantly I'm just assuming that the high power 50W LED tower are ridiculously HOT so careful there. Hubert, you certainly can however not recommended. If you go ahead think about surgically clean microfiber cloth when doing so. There are no scratch (& UV) protective film on the inside part of the lens therefore any hard-dust on your cloth will make it worst (scratch the lens). Polishing (finishing) will need to be done using a "camera lens polishing cloth'. Doable but again, got to be done in a very clean environment.

Sorry to hear about your trouble man. regardless on how severe the scratch is, the only way I see one of those lens coming back close to original is under-water polishing, or micro filling (vacuum?). An eyewear professional locally or the-like will be able to advise on the correct procedures I'm certain. Just pray one is not too busy and happy to take your lens job quickly. My dad had an old collection Pentax (glass) lens restored from the dead once and it came out 98% almost perfect. No great innovations, Fred, just still trying to find a way to make all functions work including the infamous required-here DRL. If the high beam power supply is used for flashing, with either halogen or LED, does the resulting short on/offs of power to the cutoff shield solenoid create a problem? Otherwise I was thinking of maybe using the park light wire to separately activate the flash of the bulb in the high beam position. However, I just checked the wire size of the park light and see it's only half the size of the low, high and fogs, so maybe not an option after all.

RE Angel Eyes; I know for a fact that those new high performance bi-xenon projectors meets vehicle safety inspections requirement in terms of aiming, screen distance and marking id. However nothing have yet convinced me (officially) that "angel eyes", the-aftermarket-ones, are meeting vehicle safety laws when it comes to DRLs. Hey Particle, How do you get the corner triangles off? The little tabs broke off when I tried to remove one. Worst case scenario is I just have to epoxy the triangle in place without the tabs I suppose. I also wonder if there is any aligning of the lights necessary after installing the Projectors?

Yes, some alignment will be necessary, but if your lights were aligned properly before the retrofit, it will be minimal. To remove the corners, carefully pry the clips back just far enough to push the top of the trim piece out until the pins are clear of the headlight housing, then slide down Unfortunately, the older they are, the more brittle they get. It doesn't hurt to hit the backside clips with a low temp hair dryer or heat gun for 10-15 seconds to make the plastic more pliable.

OK I may be a dim bulb ( pun intended ) so bear with me. Basically if you have standard halogen headlights to upgrade you can either purchase OEM Litronic or go aftermarket like these projectors correct ? And the ones in this thread are the same type of bulb ( xenon ) as the Litronics correct ? And the OEM Litronics and this projector style in this thread are for low beam only correct ? Are there clear lenses available that are not Litronic ? I'm trying to get the clear look at the most reasonable price. Car is a 2002 S. Based on this thread and the apparent quality that has gone into these it seems like a no brainer to go with these based on quality/price. What am I missing ? But if I can buy OEM Litronics used that are already in a clear lense for a decent price that may be more cost effective. My heads ready to explode trying to figure out something as simple as headlights !!!

Yes, these projectors and litronics both use HID xenon bulbs. Unlike the litronic projectors, these units do function as both high and low beams. They have a cutoff shield that blocks half of the beam until you turn your high beams on, at which point a small solenoid in the projector pulls down the shield to expose the entire beam. Did you see the pictures on the previous page? I think that even amber headlights look good after retrofitting.

I bought a pair of used Clear, Halogens in good shape. One of the corners had broken tabs so I had to epoxy that triangle. I then sold my Amber OEM's to cover more than half of the cost of the Clears. I am still debating this projector DIY. Lately, I just have not had the time to do any projects so I have not gotten around to it. I may just have to send them to Particle.

AWESOME look! Depending on the color of the car, I would say that our amber headlights are sexy and unique looking. I think yours would look great with seal grey interior, silver projectors to match the silver eyeliner, and maybe some real light grey tint on the amber, though I'm not opposed to just amber, either. I think it looks good with these projectors If you want some chrome up front, just leave the projector shroud raw aluminum and leave the reflector chrome. Here is my first crack at the "Dragon Eyes" modification and programming of the Projectors. https://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_detailpage&v=y07LMs5-zFA I noticed my flashing security led on the dash and though it would be neat if the Projectors with their eyeball look had a dim red breathing glow to indicate an active security system. Since Nine8six is in Asia who produced the cool projectors I thought coining a new term "Dragon Eyes" would be appropriate. Kinda looks like a slumbering dragons eyes. Also a Porsche should always be meaner and cooler looking than a Beamer with Angel Eyes. I programmed the LED breathing pattern using a Texas Instuments Microprocessor, about the size of a thumbnail $3, EZ430-F2012 I did the programming in "C" and uploaded it to the chip via USB dongle. I need to adjust the breathing pattern to lengthen it and have some LED off cycle time to make it more dramatic. Ray

Hey Bruce Yes. Puts out enough if you ask me. This, and the initial xenon burst/flash (I don't use a relay), is enough to blink someone in 'normal' daylight conditions. Abnormal conditions being; let's say south Californian or Texan sunlight I rarely blink others personally... although I had to use screaming once or twice. Hey Bruce, it sounds like we're on the same wavelength. I also like the look without the angel eyes (no offence, Fred ), want to paint the inside black or dark grey, and use the LED towers in the high beam position to flash. The difference for me is that, with the need to have daytime running lights in my province, a friend is designing a relay circuit that will use the fog lights as DRLs rather than the low beams. I prefer not to use the xenon for DRL or flashing. Therefore, for flashing, the LEDs will provide the light without the initial xenon burst / flash. (Although the cutoff shield solenoid will actuate.)

Yeah...I just get at it from the back. I use a screwdriver to pry up and break it at the weak point where it is very thin. It is a bit barbaric, but that is the only easy way to get it out and it looks horrid with the retrofit if left in.

Hey Norm It will be fine given you do not flex the parts you paint after they have fully cured. Curing can take weeks so you have plenty of time there! My understanding is metal paints lacks of elasticity polymers. If the plastic part you are painting will eventually require flexing then metal enamel paints may not be the best solution. In your case, the part will be fixed and secured with 3 screw inside the headlight so in that case you are good to go with anything off the shelf within the high temp paint series. Surface prep is a must. Use a min/max #600 grit abrasive paper (wet sanding) and do this with gloves on (no no finger grease mate). Higher than #600 is pretty useless and lower may/will show scratch marks. I also heard "professional" use a primer before applying paint.... but I am far from being a professional painter. The less chemical fumes I breath the better A happy sunny Sunday afternoon job

They are not comparable to the old yellowed halogen - xenon has a much sharper light output (say brighter if you wish) which makes it look very close to pure white. Although slightly yellow'ished (5%) it does serves its purpose. The 4,3k xenon bulbs are the ones that cuts best through rain, snow and fog. I only need those that cuts into city smog (lol) so I use the 6k. Pure white with 5% bluei'sh tint in them. City style, very fancy looking, and passes inspections (i.e strong enough output)

I'd love to... but my car is only going to be in the area for another week. Well, I'm finally done. After many trials and tribulations, the headlights are back in the car and I'm loving it. The improvement in the look of the car is immense. Fred's kit is awesome. I sanded and painted the reflector, but opted to not paint the inner plastic shroud. I like it, but you can decide for yourself. I wanted to do this project myself, so I was prepared for the warts that came as a result of being a rookie. For those that are ok with someone else doing the work and/or want it to be perfect, I highly recommend particlewave. Charles has it all figured out, and was extremely helpful to me with my questions through the process. And for what he charges, it's really a steal. Clearly it's more of a hobby for him, so get it while he's still interested!

To avoid any confusion, my car is Seal Grey, not silver. My crappy pic of the car buried in the garage doesn't help. Fred's gunmetal grey shroud is an excellent match for it. Now that it's done, I almost wish I'd painted the reflector grey instead of black. On the other hand, having the projector "appear" or "emerge" out of the black is kinda cool...

Don't get fooled by cheapo fiberglass. Mine is all good entertainment but as real porsche enthusiasts, we would all agree that a Boxster car equipped with a "genuine Porsche part aero kit" makes it one of the best out there (imo anyway). I'm actually still quite the amateur at lens restoration. The inside of the lens is no problem because there's no coating and I can polish them quite easily. However, the outer lens has the UV coating which is very hard to get through. I have yet to find a method of removing the UV layer without causing deep scratches that take hours to wet sand out. I appreciate the compliments, but I still have a long way to go. The only reason I did Richards was because they were in such bad shape that I could do no wrong. I'll keep at it, though Here's a before shot of Richards. I hope you don't mind.

My lenses were almost as bad as Richard's. Followed Fred's advice. Wet sand with 1200 grit until no yellow stuff comes off anymore. I didn't have any finer grit sand paper lying around, but rubbing two pieces of 1200 grit together takes their edge off enough to mimic a finer grit. Sanded with those until I didn't see any deep scratches anymore. Then used the step pads of a Turtle Wax Headlight Restorer Kit for a while. Finally used the polishing stuff that comes with that kit on a buffer with modest speed. Used spare amounts of polisher and just kept at it until happy with the result. The whole process is about 2 to 3 hours per headlight. Btw, I see that Richard's rubber seals are as much turned into mush as mine. Any way to fix this? Bbtw, what do you use for UV protection?

I've retrofitted a Carrera a few months ago (3~4months) and use the below high density foam held by a few drops of rtv silicon. Still looking as new today. Not a perfect seal 'as rubber would do' but visually it is the same. Looks 100x times better than nothing at all or the old melted rubber anyway. Not tested . I have no idea if this HD foam material will last "years" under heavy UV and sun heat. It is however definitely good to use as a quick replacement until you find a donor/oem rubber seal. Everywhere on ebay in many sizes... $1 type item. DIY fun

The only reason I settle for the hd foam was to fight the 'fitting' issue. Tried some rubber seal but I just couldn't get the thing to 'squeeze' enough to fit the headlight in place. Those are normally industrial stiff :/ Tried smaller rubber seal but then.... worked just fine but no seal, water would have gone inside the fender like in the Niagara falls. The HD foam made the fit so (too) easy, tight squeeze, perfect seal, no water and all but again.... not sure if the stuff will last years. I'm thinking NOT but we just never know

The crazy thing of course is that Porsche is not selling this seal separately from the rest of the assembly. All these seals are turning into mush after a couple of years, so getting them from a dismantler or so just postpones the inevitable. Fred, Charles, thanks for the suggestions. I think I have actually some of the Frost-King stuff lying around. I used it for its intended purpose, i.e. sealing doors and windows, but I was never very impressed with the quality. I'll get some of the high density foam.

It is disturbing that Porsche does not have this headlight seal as a separate replaceable item. But as it turns out I know someone that makes aftermarket rubber seals ! He currently makes many Porsche seals for the older air cooled cars. I sent him an email asking if he would be interested in looking into making these and he said he is. But to do that he needs at the very least a small sample but preferably one complete seal. Does anyone have one they can give up for the R&D effort ? For my recently departed Porsche I had almost every seal he sells and they all fit and were of equal or better quality than OEM. I have no idea if this will come to fruition or not but it's worth a shot. I have nothing to gain from this just trying to help myself and the community. If anyone has a seal they can donate please send me a PM and we'll go from there. Should I post this anywhere else on this forum ?

Richard, I have one spare passenger side. It's a little gummy on one end, but it's all there. By the way, I did not put your seals back on before shipping your headlights because they were pretty gummy and I didn't want to risk tearing them, so I'll just leave that to you. I included them in a separate Ziploc bag with the screws I'll send the spare seal to you on Monday.

I have had several emails with the potential manufacturer and he's committed to doing the R&D once he receives the sample. My understanding of the process is first he will study the shape, going just on memory from when I sent mine to Charles there is a shape to these seals it's not like it's a giant o-ring. So a die or possibly multiple dies might be needed. Then the rubber type/compound will have to be determined, my goal is to have them made out of a compound that hopefully won't turn to mush. I know all of the seals I purchased from this vendor for my previous Porsche after 3 years were as good as when I installed them they weathered very well. OK different subject I want to order clear corner lenses for my new headlights car is a 2002 S. Per Pelican Parts the part numbers 996-631-045-00-M422 ( left ) + 996-631-046-00-M422 ( right ) only fit model year 2003 - 2004 is that correct ? If it is correct what are the part numbers for a 2002 ? Or will they fit ? I want to verify before ordering. Thanks

Agree of letting this run its course. However if your friend is making these commercially, chances are he has those gigantic machines and presses. Seen those before... it is disturbing mate believe me. Our problem is min. qty to for him to break even (you can't say NO to a friend!). We'll need to buy min 500pcs of this small seal just so he can at least cover the cost of the energy required for heating his machine's rollers (used to melt the rubber). Molds cost are not included yet... those can go up nasty as well even if they are made of aluminum. RE material; they will be most likely made of EPDM rubber. Or request for them to be (please ) The alternative: Someone (Charles, you there?) to buy the casting kit and do them at home. Perfect for a small qty run. Doesn't require much to get this done in less than 48hrs (for someone that never done casting before). You just need a pint of casting silicon + catalyst and some modeling clay (plasticine?) to do a two-parts mold. Tutorials all over Youtube (I've just checked). The rubber is also sold by the same sellers selling those DIY casting kits. They come in a liquid form with curing time ranging from 6 ~16hrs. Silicon rubber being one of the best and most used although not the cheapest. You can colour this stuff using plain dyes (black, gray, red, pink, whatever). Very high heat resistant... not sure about discoloration under UV however (might turn white, but after ten years). Molding/Casting/Replicating a part is as easy as making a chocolate cake in all honesty. Today you can find resins in liquid form of any sort (silicon based, rubber, epoxies, acrylics, plastics, what else....) Youtube "casting two part mold" type search. I've done a lot of that in the past (custom gaskets, o-rings, little plastic gears, anything really). Very fun and relaxing hobby

You mention using high temp paint in your retrofit instructions, and recommend painting the underside of the housing. I have a can of factory match guards red paint, unfortunately it isn't high-temp paint. Does that section of the housing experience elevated temps as well? I've also heard the VHT red brake caliper paint is a near-perfect match - maybe I can use that if it is really a close enough match. Hoping for a look something along the lines of the orange RUF you posted or this: I'll give it a go and post the results when I get the kit in. I'll be honest I've never bother to measure the temp inside the headlight. Not that it is complicated, just need a probe-style thermometer slipped in the high beam's socket. I am just assuming that being painted black, closed-envclosure, etc, it got to get hot in there on a day or two during the year (e.g. end of July, mid day, 105 degree, clear sky, headlight angled S-W) ouch! lol Black is the only reason I would go for a reputable high temp spray paint. Yours will be red so temps will never reach those of black. ps. The key really is the surface prep. I wet-sand the plastic with #600 and leave it in that rough condition for ultimate adhesion Spray paints normally fill that grit just perfectly and leave a 98% near perfect finish/surface. Two coats is often enough. I also degrease the parts to be painted with a commercial degreaser + rinsed in cold distilled water. It's permanent

I've asked this question before and received an answer but I want to ask it again. The OEM seals have two different part numbers, I'm assuming to designate left/right even though you can't buy them. But are the seals interchangeable ? A left will fit the right and right will fit the left ? The last time I asked the answer was yes they will fit either side. I just want to clarify that point as we move a little closer. At this point I don't know how exact/precise the new seals will be or will they be a little more " generic " and will easily fit either side ? Really just thinking out loud.

If the part# is different then this confirms the seals are L + R :/ While holding the seal stretched in your hands and flipping it 180 degree, if both sides radiuses are identical then they should be good to go on either left or right. Can't really recall or needed to tried. Surely someone who already have a seal in hand could confirm this quick Meanwhile some "amber" angel eyes lit up with a half-full 9v batt. For those of you who wants to carry on the stock Porsche amber theme to the front-end Those look nicer at full 12 volts. Same color, just brighter a tad. Had some email dialog last night with the supplier, he's thinking of using satoprene from what I gather it is a plasticised rubber compound ? I may have to send him both of my garbage seals so he has a left/right to model. We're one tiny step closer !

OK last night I had the first phone conversation with the potential manufacturer of the headlight seals. First off I learned that he makes all his own molds/tooling in house so that drastically decreases the price ( good thing ). Second in his opinion the reason the OEM seals turn to mush is he believes whoever is making the seals only partially cures the rubber because after partial cure the insertion of the plastic pieces takes place. In his opinion the partial cure is the problem and the heat from being in the sun turns the rubber to mush. Third and most interesting to me is the cost of the seals we talked about. I'm not ready to disclose yet but we talked " loose numbers " and if he can hit these numbers I think everyone will be very happy . Sorry for the tease but I don't want to put the cart before the horse. Also talking group buy , volume wholesale pricing etc. so we are moving forward slowly. Not sure when the next update will be but as soon as I hear something you all will know. And just for clarification I have no financial interest in this and I won't be running a group buy, I'm solely interested just to get a set of seals for my own car ! The way I " think " this will go down is once the seals are available I'll discuss with the manufacturer a group buy using his website. Maybe a special code or something so 986forum owners get a discount. I would provide the website link and everyone would be on their own after that. That's pretty much it for now.

Just read all the pages, this is going on my wish list. I like the ones Clickman got, with blue LEDs. I have a 2003 Seal Grey with factory Lits. Think these would be an upgrade and could sell the originals to pay for the upgrade. I assume the factory washers would work?

Nice work here all! If one has factory Litronics would this modification be suitable; do these projectors out perform the stocks? What are the specs.? I would imagine the aim/levelling feature would be toast along with the link to the suspension; is this feature addressed or needed by this new projector arrangement? What the performance differences between old and new? Which are better? Is it feasible to perform the cosmetic changes only, on stock Litronics?

Clickman's the 911 'round' look many have been looking for! yes for the factory washer. Those are external and does not interfere with any of the install Litronic is just a fancy marketing term created by Porsche. It's the same thing as a xenon or more accurately HID lighting systems. Bi-xenon means the low and high beams are both HID lights. Where the Porsche Litronic only uses HID for low beam and halogen for high beam. Some who've compared both the CGT kit with the Lits have notice a major difference in sharpness of the beams. The bi-xenon CGT kit being by far better (of course!). As for intensity/brightness they are pretty similar (low-beam wise). One cost thousands (DOT approved), where the aftermarket performance bi-xenon projector kit cost $355. A sexy flavor of the CGT style theme is a bonus. Specs: amazing, affordable, functional, performing well, stylish, easy-diy (you didn't need data I hope!?) Leveling: oem leveling features remains the same after retrofit (using same allen/hex porsche tool) Performance: Day & night difference. Yes. Requires removal of the litronic projector and lens assembly. 3 screws and the whole thing falls off. That assembly is then replaced with a custom 1.5mm thick back plate meant to accommodate the CGT kit. Hmmm so all the factory levelling (sensors and projector movement for cars with the factory installed Litronics) will still be in play but one now has a more powerful projector in there...okay now we are talking. I did not have Litronics nor leveling. I was looking to upgrade to Litronics but choose this. I know this is a long thread but there is a lot of info contained that I would defer to. To my knowledge, no one has attempted this with Lits yet. What Fred is referring to, I believe, is using all of the stock equipment with his bezel/shroud via an adapter plate, hence all of the stock lighting and leveling remains and only the look changes. Very do-able

Thanks for putting the projectors in the lights for me. I would have buggered it up- or worse yet (and most likely) never gotten around to finishing. I think the choice to go 'no paint' was the right one for my car color.

I still need to get particlewave to retrofit my LED custom headlights to use these awesome projectors. I'll be seeing my car again on the 15th. Since the car is sitting in a shop and won't need any headlights, I'll probably extract them for particlewave.

OK guys another mini update . Just received an email from the vendor he has conducted pull tests ( didn't know this was needed ) on the satoprene and he's very happy with the results. Apparently next he's going to try silicone. Then the next will be a harder material, this harder material would drastically reduce the tooling costs. So this R&D is moving forward and he believes by late next week he " may " decide the material he is going to move forward with. I'm quite excited by the progress to date but looking forward to having some prototypes in my hands !

Many values the litronic as they are, factory, Porsche brand, DOT approved, whatever reasons. They are not bad lighting at all. If your plans are to go for full bi-xenon + CGT style front-end, the best would be to sell your Litronic to a member here and buy a NEW set of halogen to retrofit. This thread and the support from members of 986forum have given me invaluable inspiration throughout the life and development of this projector. The interest, the demand, satisfaction and enthusiasms, have made me realized that there were a demand to bring this product to its next level. So.... I did! Most importantly and before going any further, I would like to thanks everyone who have shown interest in the kit and to those who've purchased it from Charles or myself (very special thanks to you). Without all of you guys, 986forum, this would NOT have been possible. So thanks x100 again, I'll forever be grateful to all of you here Once a personal idea meant to mimic the front-end of a half-million dollar car, some could now call it The Ultimate Halogen-to-HID headlight retrofit kit for sport & super cars series. While keeping up to the theme of this thread, i.e. sharing, and without any further due (apologies to those who've been waiting), here goes some previews of what I am rumbling about. The final High Performance Bi-Xenon Projector Series (2014 models lol). All of the models are sharing the same dotted angel eyes concept and most technical features and performance identical to the classic CGT style projector. With few cosmetic exceptions and design revisions however: 1. The lens is now secured with a retaining ring. Machined in house and made of POM material (Delrin) 2. Angel eyes now mounted on the lens' retaining ring 3. The LED diffuser are also machined in-house using clear PMMA (Acrylic, frosted filter effect) 4. 15% weight reduction using thin wall thickness machining techniques, and less filling chemicals. Total assembly now only weight total 338 grams 5. Transient thermal analysis simulation, R&D and tests have been carried. Thermal management vs material properties (AE hotspots avoidance, heat dissipation tests) 6. And finally, each design have been given a name ^ Although the kit remains fully customizable (anodizing colors, laser script, etc), that is how they are going to be branded and laser-scripted by default. The Gunmetal is also the default color. Less the chemical green LEDs of course ps. this green is what I prefer using for 3D renderings!

I purchased a used set of headlights. I opened the backs of the lights because they were rattling and found that each light had an HID kit installed. The rattling came from ballasts which were lose inside cover that seals the access to the bulbs. It looked like the weight of the ballasts had knocked the light buckets off the pivot ball. Also the seal on one light was mush. Thursday was spent polishing the yellowed and gunk-ed up lenses. They now are looking like brand new. Today I used Particlewave's video to open both headlights. I baked the first one for 15 minutes with no give on the silicone. It went back into the oven for another 10 minutes since it had cooled a bit. It came apart easy enough the after the second bake. The second one went in for 20 minutes and came apart quickly. It was then easy to pop both of the headlight bucket assemblies back onto their pivot balls. The internal lens covers came off with only one plastic tab having broken. Once the internal light covers were off there was dust or dirt around the reflectors. It looked like residue from a bulb burning off moisture. Next step have to be ordering the new projector lights.

Make sure to spray a permanent protective UV coating on the newly polished lenses, or they will be cloudy again in no time!

I've read this thread many times and really love the look of these latest projectors. I like the one above with the angled edge. I think this modification is a little out of my league

Mine were original lenses and they received no special care for ten+ years and had some minor scratches so they had to be wet sanded at some stage. Although NOT recommended by any pro it worked for me. I didn't used UV protect whatsoever BUT I have to regularly polish them when I do the 986's quarterly detailing. Edit: takes 10min per headlight I'm just saying this because the lenses looks as new as the day I restored them 36+ months ago. Guessing if you maintain them regularly it shouldn't be any different for yours. Been using Meguiar's Plast-X Clear Plastic Cleaner. Could well have UV protect additives dunno... rarely read labels These polish products are all the same thing really (de-oxidizers + ultrafine abrasive particles)

I think the Turtle Wax or Mequire's headlight kit comes with a UV protectant for the plastic. A wipe on treatment that seems to be one that gets repeated like waxing.

FYI - For readers interested in the retrofit, I am booked full through August 15. Kits are still available for DIYers

Another option is to use Lamin-X. The thick, clear headlight film does a good job of hiding small scratches.

Another mini update on the replacement seals . Just received an email from the supplier the tooling will be 5k but he feels like the numbers of 986/996 out there that may need these seals is great enough to move forward with the project. He has ordered the material to make the dies he estimates we are 8 weeks away from having a first piece article !!! He is going to make one side first I can't remember if I sent him a driver or passenger side ? If the fit is good he'll then do the opposite side. I may have to send him my old seals to get the other side but that's not a problem. Who knows with a little luck maybe these will be available by year end or a little sooner !

You just fill up at 50%, the lip of the lens accounts for the other 50%, when pressed together it all becomes a nicely flush seal. You can't screw up and even if you'd try you'd fail

yea... they are alright. That mini h1 optic throws out a pretty sharp beam and that 35watts xenon is just perfect for this Porsche style headlight/lens angle design. Works, and it won't cook up your lens! Surely they could be better. Recently tried a (true) 55watts hid kit on those. Brutal daylight blinding stuff but the heat is phenomenally high. Not only you can't touch the projector itself, it is difficult to hold your hand 1 inch away without getting burn after 2-3 secs. That poor porsche hood-style lens wouldn't last a month without a little brown burn Unless there is a way to shield that 55w heat in a way, using mini exhaust PC fans? lol, 35 watts hid in these is pretty much what it is.... for us anyway They are 'okay', and they look guud (i also think!)

I spent most of my life in the Professional Photo Finishing industry, we had a mirror on our lamp houses called a "Cold Mirror" , it was a piece of glass with a Dichroic coating, it looked slightly silver to the naked eye but was 90% transparent to infrared light, this passed the heat from the 4 500 watt bulbs out of the back of the lamphouse and not into the optics that projected the image onto the photographic paper. Most halogen bulbs that have a built in reflector have this coating, if you look at one with a night vision viewer the silver reflector will appear to be transparent. Im not sure if any of this technology could be used for HID lamp houses....but I was thinking about it while I read your post about the 55W envelopes and ballasts.

I can sympathize, Bruce. I've now had all 3 iterations. The good news is that if you get brave enough to open your headlights someday, 95% of the work is done. You could just swap in the new units and sell the old ones as they are still in high demand. The sale of the old units can darn near pay for the new ones. Another email update from the gasket manufacturer, in about 10 days they start cutting the tooling and 1st articles will be aprox. 10 days after that. He believes he will have prototype parts in hand by the end of July. He also stated he is still considering three material compounds for the final product. All three compounds can be run through the same tooling dies. Yesterday I sent him my personal set of gaskets so he would have a left/right just to be safe. We are getting closer to this being reallity !

I'm not sure yet. They will either be DRL's or "flash to pass" daytime high beams. They are very bright. Blinding. Combine that with the projector lens and they are actually very useful. I mostly just like the way they look, though. I'm resurrecting the old CCFL DRL idea, also. These will be nice because I made them so that the bulb can be changed through a plug in the side of the headlight (no need to remove the lens). They are also very bright. Still a bit of work to go, but I'll have them finished in a week or so.

Could you do that with a frosted tube and a Cree at each end...should burn essentially forever.

I've actually tried those. The EL wire isn't nearly bright enough and led tube is spotty and a pain to repair if a single led goes out. See above. The quest for tube lighting...led tubes aren't very bright and they still have that uneven spotty look.

Thanks you for the compliment! When toying with design ideas, I was inspired by the Carrera dual projectors (1 larger, 1 smaller as seen below). Unfortunately, finding a projector lens smaller than those that we use proved very difficult and there is not much spare room in the headlight with these projectors due to their mount location. So, I combined the Carrera dual projector with the 918 4 barrel and came up with these. I went through countless combinations before settling on this. I tried many different ideas; even adding a second inner shroud to the headlight as seen below. The silver on white looked great in mock up, but not so much in the car.

I like the projects you do, everything looks classy or elegant to me. I always try to make my projects look as close to factory as possible, if you don't have time to do it right the first time how in the world will you find time to do it right the second or third time. What are the two smaller light assembly's on the side for ? I cant wait to do this to a spare set of lights I have at home, hopefully the job interview will go good next week and I can get back to work so I can order some projectors. Thanks again Dwight, and good luck with the interview! I hope that you get the chance to upgrade your lights soon. The smaller lights on the side will probably be used as daytime high beam flashers. HIDs are powered by the low beam circuit and in low beam mode, there is a small cutoff shield that blocks half of the beam. When you turn your high beams on, a solenoid pulls down the cutoff shield, exposing the entire beam. However, since the HIDs are powered by the low beam circuit, when you try to flash your high beams with the headlight switch in the off position , only the solenoid is activated and no light is output. For this reason, many opt to leave the reflector chrome and keep the stock high beams on a relay so that when the headlight switch is off, the stock high beams are used for flashing. When the switch is on, the relay is activated, switching the high beam circuit back to the solenoid and rendering the halogen high beam inoperable. I wanted a blacked out reflector, so I may use these as the daytime high beam flashers. They are certainly bright enough. Here's another small teaser Im still working out the CCFL DRLs and LED projectors. Waiting on parts...

I'm soon will be on my third as well. Developed this odd behavior of looking at car's headlights in parking lots everywhere I go. Guys, can someone help me? I have been having some electrical problems with the headlights. They work perfect BUT have some side effects: My low oil warning light goes off. Turning of the lights and starting the car again solves that problem. My battery light goes off. Turning of the lights and starting the car again solves that problem. My automatic spoiler quits being automatic. Turning off the lights solves that also. So, can anyone help me with the above mentioned? My battery is still strong. The car starts perfectly every time (even after a 3 week vacation).

Edit: Some cars, not all, do not like aftermarket HID kits. Well documented if you lookup for Oil/Battery/Spoiler issues (google). Looks like I will have to refund you a set of ballasts and you'll need to try a another HID kit that works for your car "specifically". Your nearest HID guru shop should be able to identify/fit a ballast type that works for your car (request CANBUS). What causes this is unknown yet (according to my research anyway). Your car seems to be that one car out of 200 who is not aftermarket HID kit friendly. Sorry to hear that man, not sure what to say here.... Thanks for your answer. The problem started shortly after re-installing the headlights. I also just replaced my ignition switch (common problem). I did not suspect that it was the headlights until I read on the internet that it is a problem when retrofitting xenon headlights. Is there any way to test the ballasts for malfunctions? I did not think that Boxsters would have this problem. (The all are basically the same,right?) Update: The retrofit center here in the Netherlands, has a good canbus Ballast, but the cannot be 100% sure that it will cure the problem. The current one you supplied has an AMP connection right?

Apparently not. I've installed little over 200 of those HID kits. The ballasts are pretty rock solid and works flawlessly. But from the look of it, clearly one car is not happy with them. Happens to be yours man (really sorry). What we can do is I send you a ballast kit to test whether yours are faulty. Cheap to try anyway so I'll get a kit in the mail for you tomorrow. If you are having the same issue, that would confirm my theory that some cars just doesn't like HID kits. Very few but it's there and documented (you normally unlucky like that mate?!)

See here. Same issue on a 996. This is news to me, also. Funny that the above link was posted today on the 996 forum. Not sure if his are xenon, OEM or what.

Connecting a 10W 500 Ohm resistor across the +12V in on the Ballast, this will sometimes create a feedback loop and trap the spurious RF that is being generated bye the ballast...this will sometimes trap it in a loop...like a hamster in a wheel. You might have to experiment with the resistance to get to the right value. I had to cross this bridge years ago with a BMW that had the same problem. This has nothing to dso with the Canbus funsction

It exist yes. Found 4 or 5 documented cars on the internet after an extensive research having the very same issues. For some reason, that I don't understand, most of these pcars, if not all, had either engine/DME swaps, rebuilds or had their ECU hacked into at some stage. Where is the link some may ask, well apparently your guess is as good as mine. At the minute all I can confirm is that CANBUS HID kit Charles and I offers works with the following: 1) Boxster (986) 2.5/2.7/3.2 2) 911 (996) all models ^ of course, only those models running "stock" engines, DME, immobilizers, and TMS.

Good timing, Hubert - I've just hung-up with an engineer working at the manufacturer of that ballast. He told me it already has a 5 ohm 50 watt resistor built-in circuit which is used apparently to fool computers by simulating the resistance of an traditional halogen bulb. This + a EMC filter (he mentioned capacitors?? RF canceller). The manufacturer also reassured us that there are both open & short circuit automatic protection that will trigger & tested within 1~2ms. So to him he is not too worried for your car However he mentioned that whatever your problem is, to them it is not caused by their unit but more of an underlying electrical condition that your car (and some others apparently) is likely suffering of. That underlying electrical issue being amplified by the ballasts Whatever that means mate. We change car?! I would mind a 3.6L fast Boxster Like Dwight recommend, I'd still add some resistance on the circuit and see how things goes.

lol, back to my first advice I agree this is the way to go. In your case anyway, you'll possibly need to try a few until one set decide to love the car you are running there. Don't discourage buddy. 'Anything' I can do for you from this end, you have my mobby or email Hubert. Drive safely with that 3.6! (must be mean as hell your car... I want it lol)

First let me say I am by no means an expert on this, just offering some suggestions. First try one light assembly out so you can try each side independently of each other, narrow it down to one side if possible. Second treat it like alternator whine in a stereo...it is after probably spurious AC being generated and getting back into the cars system....try attaching a .01 , .05 , .10 , .50 capacitor from +12V to ground and see if that might trap it and bleed it to ground before it gets back into the car. Next step would be to try making a LC circuit out of a inductor and a capacitor to also act as a choke. I Will try and do some research for better values. We have enough talent on this board we should be able to kill this problem

Yes and no. We first need to know what the problem is in order to solve it. Possibly AC feedback, but we don't know for sure. A capacitor to shunt any AC to ground is a good idea, but let's start with a new ballast

I got the MK2 set (Same a Chrono's) and it hasn't given me a problem until now. Same as you: battery light coming on, oil light coming on, finding my spoiler up for no reason. Answered my own question by looking up some of your previous posts. Looks like those are the headlights you have! You could do like a few have done already and sort the issue by patching things up e.g. adding some resistance onto the light circuit. Problem remains? no worries just add more but not too much or you'll see your brightness diminishing greatly (dimmed headlights?) and those resistors' temp rising :/ Needs trials. If really that issue you are having doesn't want to go away, then you'll need to completely isolate the lighting system from the existing car circuit by connecting everything directly onto the 12v battery using a relay/harness type setup. You could also buy a new battery, an alternator, and all should get back to normal same as the other thousand of boxsters/996s out there who are also equipped with the same headlights you have. Or HID kits!? But again, I'm not a electro pro. Just a wild guess yea

My question for all of this (tossing a rock in the dark) some folks had weird issues with the Litronics pop up in another thread. They would not self level, etc etc. It appears to have been fixed by replacing a particular relay. Does that relay exist in the non litronic cars, if so could one be effecting the projector lights in this case?

The truth is, often simply changing ballasts with ones that has higher rated capacitors/resistance solves those weird problems. Trouble is you need to try a few and that can be annoying, or you might get lucky and the first one you try is spot-on (Hubert, fingers crossed). -or- other similar patches to fix old car's fluctuating and/or weakening voltages includes adding "aftermarket" resistor & high power capacitor packs. The fog light reflector is only 4cm tall, so it would have to be a tiny projector. I have not had any luck finding any that small.

It's not the LEDs. They are on load resistors, so even if all but 1 went out, the car would never know the difference (the resistor emulates a bulb). Are you running halogens or HIDs in the units? What type of ballasts are you using, if HID? Edit: my best guess is that you are also running HIDs and that this problem is being caused by AC feedback in the line from a faulty ballast.

Hi guys, here's an update. Yesterday I received a pair of ballast with a build-in Canbus solution (ballast/starter/Canbus in one box). I turned the Xenon kit on and immediately my oil warning lamp went on . So, these units are going back. My next step will be connecting some Canbus warning cancellers between the ballast and my 12V connectors as an extra. I also thought of another possible solution. There is a possibility that the peak voltage after starting the Xenon kit triggers the problem. So, by connecting the ballasts directly to my battery via a relay I will be effectively removing that peak voltage when turning the Xenon lights on right? This is just an idea....any thoughts on this?

There is a 986 on the Chinese Porsche forum here with the exact same issues that Bat and yourself are having. MIL, batt/oil, spoiler tak tak tak thingny He was running an aftermarket 2DIN deck with LCD, 400watts amp, GPS module, some depo LEDs tailights and a nice and expansive aftermarket iPhone charger - all at the same time! When he starts the car with accessories turned ON he gets these lights, if he turns accessories OFF and start the car, all is fine. Ah you are still going to get them from me! In fact, the one who will machine, hand polish, anodize, laser etch and assemble them will be myself. (lol "by myself"... sounds like a famous scammer quote?!) The way it will work is the (easy) machining bits will be outsourced to a friend's shop (e.g. adapter kit, cap, screw, shroud, composites) however, the bezel's precision machining, polishing, anodizing, laser, assembling stays in-house. That way I can continue to assure QC and needless to say save us all a ton of $ by being able to do this part ourselves. AWESOME Nine8Six! I'm day dreaming of a set of your projectors, switchback led lighting for DRL/turn signals, and integrating an auto-on switch/system. I know that may not be everyone's cup of tea but I smile when I see it in my head, lol.

How are you wiring your angel eyes? I want to use an ignition switched 12v source independent of the parking lights. If I have to, I'll run a wire from the fuse block. Is it possible to order male and female pins to fit the existing connector, since there is space for more contacts? If so, can someone find the part numbers? I plan on using one relay to control the high beam so that when the low beam is on and the high beam is flashed, the shutter will open. When the low beam is off, the halogen high beam will flash. I've done this before and it works well. Another set of contacts on the relay will shut off the angel eyes when the xenon light is on.

Guys, make sure you check the beam height after installing the new projectors. I had to raise them quite a bit. I followed the 25 ft (7.5 m) method described in the owner's manual, adjusting the numbers to accommodate that my garage was a few feet too small for the full 25 ft. It's a 5mm hex to do the actual adjustment.

My kit arrived on just the other day. The lights are installed in the housings. Next step is figuring out the wiring, mounting the Ballasts, checking the aim and then sealing them back up.

Take a look at my retrofit thread. I still have not finished it, but there are some good pictures in there. For nice and clean install of the ballast, you'll want a 1" holesaw and some 1" hole plugs from the hardware store. 1" is the perfect size to allow all the connectors to pass through the rear cover in case you need to replace the ballast down the road.

No RTV for me. Permatex black silicone adhesive sealant. It's pretty close to OEM. Actually, I use a combination of silicones, now. I use the Permatex at three key points around the headlight seal for it's superior adhesion, and a lighter grade silicone throughout the rest to ease future opening of the headlight.

Install completed. The specs are a Vivo light with a silver finish, white led, the interior of the light was left stock.

The lights are awesome. Just returned from driving the car for the first time after the installation. The light beam is focused perfectly. When stopped or driving behind a car they do not flood the interior of the car in front with light. Yet the light flows along the surface of the road lighting up the travel path. Passing along a bridge or guardrails the light pattern stops just along the top edge. Yet, when hitting the high beams the underpass of a bridge is lit. The difference in lighting performance is difference is between factory and these is stunning.

Did you check them with the 25 ft method? I found mine had to be adjusted up quite a bit. The cutoff was way too close to the car.

Hey man, that's my car!!! (I wish). Thanks for posting this pic here btw Tom - if you want the exact same results, other than the Turismo kit, you'll need additional: 1. High temp black spray paint (matte or semi/satin finish) 2. Silicon base sealant (to reseal your lens) 3. Some #600 abrasive paper to prep the surface of the reflector before painting You may want to weld your new connections, electric tape is 'fine' however soldering those and securing everything with heat shrink wraps/tubing is recommended. 4. Soldering gun/lead kit 5. heat shrink wraps Can't think of anything else. Some flat bars or large flat screw driver to pry open the headlight. That's it really. Let me know if you have an questions or aren't sure about anything you'll find in this thread mate

Pelican should order two colors for their catalog. Gunmetal and Black. The gunmetal works well for unpainted inners, the black for the blacked out lenses. Other colors could be custom ordered with an appropriate lead time. My two cents. I think that once they are in the Pelican Catalog sales will increase because Pelican reaches beyond the message boards.

Don - LOL, "me & my Porsche time". I know what you mean! On the Pelican note, I'll be honest I am not rushing them at all. The fact that the product is exclusive to us only atm, few friends in JP/CN and chaps from the 996 crowd is "plenty" enough to keep both Charles and I busy doing what we like doing most (late-evening work, part-time, hobby pace). So having received my lights I've been eager to get on with fitting so this has been everything has worked well. Except I can't get the high / low beam to work as I wish I want: Headlights off, halogen high beam to enable quick flash Headlights on, Bi Xenon to provide high beam Now I know this is not rocket science but I can not get it to work as I want. Somebody please just tell me how to wire up my relays because I've something fundamentally wrong or 2 faulty relays as on one the halogen works all the time and the other the halogen never works!

Connect the coil (pins 85 and 86) of a DPDT automotive relay to ground, and to + of the low beam. Either one to + and ground, doesn't matter. Cut the + wire going to the halogen high beam. Connect the beam side of the wire to NC (pin 87a) of the relay. Connect the other side of the wire that was cut going to the halogen high beam, to pin 30 of the relay. Finally, connect the + wire from the bi-xenon relay to NO (pin 87), and the other side to ground. That should do it. When the low beam is on the relay is engaged, switching high beam + to the bi-xenon coil. When it is off, + is switched to the halogen bulb.

Don! thanks for those man Yummy aluminum CNC parts. Anodized, etched and all... those should last you 20 years min. Change your xenon lamps every 1,500hrs, or every two years, and you and the car should have a blast with those Vivo. Beautiful, factory looking stuff.... Hi Fred Happy New Year 2015. Its taken me 3 nights to read the thread top to bottom back to front and its an amazing project congratulations on your progress, I'm super I'mpressed so much so i want your lights in my 2004 996 C4S. The standard halogens fitted are woefully bad, i have not long owned the car and was looking at the different upgrade paths available from new bulbs to led to hid inc litronic... my mind is set if i can make these fit i really want them I did look to see if anyone else had done the upgrade on a newer 911 but i haven't seen one, i have included a pic of my headlight as the reflector is different and it already has an internal lens. Do you think it will be possible to do?

Yea that thread is now almost two years old... sure does take a little moment to go through it I haven't looked in the mkII style headlight as off lately to be honest. All it needs is a mounting bracket where the projector screws in. Atm I am designing an ultralight mounting kit for the litronic for a few members who've asked for that. Really hope to get this out for spring. Only after then I'll be able to move onto the mkIIs. Not sure how are your fabrication skills are but it appears that there 2 or 3 different ways to adapt those CGT projectors into the mkII - pretty easy if you are tooled sufficiently. If not, Charles (Particlewave) is possibly the only guy that I know of who could help you from the USA side - if you want those retrofitted before the summer. I'd send him a quick PM and check with his schedule. In meantime do bookmark this thread, set it in RSS mode or give it a check from time to time. If so, it is a separate removable plastic piece (interchangeable)

Yes, Turismo. These were a one-off for me. Fred may be working on a Lit kit, but this had nothing to do with that. I cheated. I used halogen reflectors with the projectors installed as usual and fitted them to the Litronic reflector mounts. It worked out just fine, but cost an extra $150 to source the OEM halogen reflectors from a dismantler.

All takes time.... no no cheap cast stuff at this end Literally everything is precision machined. Even the mounting screws... stylish little kit lolll Those screws are batch CNC'ed and then snap-out from their aluminum billet just like those kid's plastic model parts. They are then faced (cleaned up) and threaded with a M24*1mm. Not exactly the cheapest bolts you can find Fancy shots... gives an idea of what's involved lol (i.e. crazy)

I have a pair of headlights where the little rubber seal that goes around the whole outer edge of the outside lens was really gummy and messed up. I found that you can use marine/automotive rubber strip like this to do a DIY gasket or O-ring cord. The marine stripping like below is a little easier DIY as you just stick it on, but o-ring cord will look a little more factory, you'll just need to get some rubber cement and glue it on. I hope this helps some of you with the gummy outer rings. For the rubber seal that goes all the way around the headlight, I found 2 options that work pretty nice. This is for headlights with a gummy seal (seemed to be kind of permanently melted). You can do a more factory look by ordering some o-ring cord and rubber cementing it around the edge. Amazon.com: JEGS Performance Products 21603 Nitrile O-Ring Cord: Automotive Another option that works is to get marine/automotive rubber strip and stick that around the edges. You can cut it where it needs to be thinner. This is an easier DIY because you just stick it on. Just be sure to clean the surface very well before sticking it on so it will last you a long time. I've actually went this road for a mate's car here and surprisingly it came out pretty good. Not the same item as yours but very similar. His were completely destroyed (had no choice). The different bulb options are color temps. 6000K is very white (almost blue). The lower the number from 6000K the more yellow the light will be. The other option will be the color of the angel eye lights.

Yea Amagala is right, they are all identical function & performance wise. All the same sizes also i.e 90mm. Just design variations really. Turismo Series: our classic and possibly the best looking of all. Copied from the Carrera GT so not much can go wrong with this design. If you aren't sure which model to pick, my recommendation is go with the Turismo. Vivo Series: modern and tactical looking. Gives a very modern flare to the front-end of the car. They are compact and about 50grams lighter than the others. The Vivo were designed with 'compact' in mind so they can be also installed in other type of vehicles (BMW, Audi, VW, Corvette, Lotus, etc). Luminoso Series: if you are after the true supercar headlight look these are for you. Pics don't give them justice but seen in real life those Luminoso are a blast to look at. Being the biggest kit all (perspective-wise) they also fill up the headlight quite nicely (my favorite, of course lol). The bezel is extremely hard to machine hence the slight price difference :/ Sorry about that guys HID XENON Choice: The 4,3k is by "far" the best lamp and what most automakers installs in their headlights. Those 4,3k are the one that cuts through fog, rain and snow the best. The 6k are the best looking one (the one I use) but not as performing as the 4.3k for sure. 6k are perfect for a city car. If you live up in the foggy mountains and deal with weather then my advice is to go with the 4,3k. Then you have the strong purples and yellows but you won't get those from me sorry. They are highly illegal, useless, and just won't pass most country's annual inspection. Angel eyes: Nothing to debate here, white angel eyes color is the classic, safest. Legal also. I haven't heard of anyone who've either failed annual inspection or been pulled over. Other colors are equally nice but mostly meant for show car purposes (illegal). The amber ones are so nice and soft nobody is going to bother you with these. Careful with RED angel eyes tho lol Asymmetrical beam distribution: You need the RHT. The projector's low beam cutoff line for use in RHT countries projects most of the light forward-rightward; those for LHT countries (UK, SE Asia & AU) projects the light most of their light forward-leftward, thus illuminating driver's own side of the road and limiting glare to oncoming traffic. They are on all the time ( wired to parking lights). You could wire them to the fogs? Check with Fred
