I've also adjusted the flat rate$ for a 950grams parcel on the site also, much cheaper.

And remember, a kit like that is only meant to be effective after you have cleaned & detailed/wax your roadster.

I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a wind deflector from Porsche here in Melbourne Australia now for sometime, but have been put off by the last person I spoke to suggesting that driving with a wind deflector installed makes more turbulence than without one.

It makes no difference to the user other than being able to create custom fading/mixing patterns and other cool effects, which I suspect will be of any interest or use, but the feature is there if needed.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

A little off topic, but speaking of lasers and HUDs reminded me of one of my former investments that didn't work out well:
A few weeks ago my friend (987 owner) and I are sitting in the back of a cab (i.e. taxi lol) and we see this BMW Z4 standing still right next to us at a traffic light. During that 5 secs long silence and awkward staring moment there weren't any words to describe how beautiful this thing was (frozen x2 lol). On the 6th second, we both say at the same time: "
I need that
" (that, illuminated edge wind deflector thingy)
So beautiful. With its Look & Feel possibly amplified by the surrounding lighting, urban environment, the car, the Z4 logo, the hot shanghainese gal driving....... I have no idea what it was. And until today I still can't figure out what made this thing standout so beautifully, why the obsession, etc etc... so I guess we'll have to put some on our Boxsters and find out by ourselves.
We actually found a few made-to-order kits and the nearest available for the boxsters was in JP. Unfortunately > $375+shipping way too expensive for what it is really. Fair enough but since we have all of that advanced tooling in-house already and easy access to all the materials locally, there is not much stopping us designing our own
Fun-cool-easy project on the engineering scale so using the same format of another DIY thread, I'll try my very best to entertain and document all of the steps we've taken to get this designed, installed and shining like no other wind deflectors in-the-world!
^ Here goes a (poorly 3D rendered) visual of the wind deflector when illuminated in red. In reality the top "edge" should be illuminated. I'll learn all about 3D rendering software and their adv light refraction features in another life maybe.
I am still unsettle on the etched graphic I'll be borrowing; maybe PORSCHE, maybe the badge, both or maybe something completely out of context (tribal, tattoo, sun, unlimited really). However, I am 100% convinced that the red color is exactly what my guards red boxster car needs
Stay tuned and who knows, if there is a demand I may manufacture a few made-to-order kits for you guys as well
^ First thing first, get the Boxster 986 wind deflector assembly 3D modeled. The organic glass, the bracket, the clips, literally everything and all that within a tolerance of (+/-) 0.05mm.
Before someone ask... nope I haven't gone crazy (I think). The reason I was sooo picky RE the details of the bracket is because I plan of designing some durable clips made of aluminum (comes with a 25 years warranty lol). I am a bit tired of replacing my plastic clips every 2-3 years (changed them 4 or 5 times now I think... lost track). Sorry but those stock plastic clips sux big time so this will eventually need to be 'fixed'.
^ The 4mm thick glass slides in/out of the bracket pretty easy. Slam it inside a commercial grade digital scanner and off you go. 2D... can't be hard to model lol
The slot and two holes are there to accommodate the edge lighting module that I have prototyped. Below visual is a quick preview of what it will look like:
As things develop I'll update. If any of you guys have advice or any special requests, please shoot
Fred. You are crazy....
In a good way!
Do you have too much time on your hands? LOL
I might just be interested in one as well
I would go with
PORSCHE
LOGO
BOXSTER (S)
986 (S)
Personally I would weant something subtle, maybe no more than 1 in high along the bottom
Great idea!
Not sure if the metal clips you plan to use would solve this, but I drilled a very small hole in my deflector so that I can secure it to the roll bar with clear fishing line. Perhaps you have a more sophisticated way to make sure it doesn't fly off at 80mph. Just a suggestion.
Looking forward to seeing the finished product!!!
Oh Yeah. Great idea. Especially the clips for the windscreen. The plastic windscreen parts on the car and the windscreen are not going to last forever. They get brittle with age which is how I broke a clip. To avoid a repeat - I always leave the wind block in place. Metal replacements will be perfect.
Norm - can't think of anything costing a whole lot of dosh in there mate. Beside, I plan on giving a cracking deal to those who've supported and trusted me during the dev of those bi-xenon headlights. I owe you, Charles, and many others here
Quick update:
As silly as this look, it is a awful lot of work. Just selecting the right materials can be a pain. That perfect organic glass is hard to find. Plenty of manufacturers but when asked for quality cast acrylic samples (read standardized pmma), they send you sub standard acrylic with impurities or something completely different hoping you'll just get on with it (e.g. plastic/acrylic, PC, extruded acrylic). Had it all already. Not fun.
So I'm off to do site visits this weekend. To see how the stuff is manufactured just to ensure we are getting that apparently hard-to-find quality "cast" pmma stuff that we deserve, not the extruded one or "more plastic".
Quality LEDs/PCBs are other things I am having great difficulties finding. The locally made strips are 'okay' but man... when you look under the hood and test those you guess they could be done better e.g. the PCB on those common LED strips are as thin as 0.2mm (loosing volts like crazy). Yes it works some will say but I'm after something a little more 'robust'. Good news is I know of someone here who gave me a sample of what we need (3528smd, 5mm*0.7mm pcb, imported from Taiwan). I am in discussion with the manufacturer atm... basically trying to convince him to ship me over a small (micro) qty lol A sml qty for these guys is a full container :/
You guys wait until you see this thing finally lit up on the Boxster car. It will be absolutely stunning x100,000 and will worth every bits of effort I promise.
Nice. So I guess we can say most agree we need a subtle look & feel for our boxster car.
No stupid bright LED (imagine the arch/rays above the car when let's say driving in fog or dust lol) and NO full window etching (I'd say a 20% of its surface area max). All positioned mid/lower.
Color wise.... the red will be a challenging one. Red will definitely need to be 'subtle' I fear. Just hope it won't conflict with the other less important DOT safety equipment of the car lol. Blue, warm/cold whites and
"amber"
should be safe and look pretty awesome
 Amber edge lighting... you guys with yellow box should love this one
Any advice, by all means, share in
Another idea and I have no idea if this is feasible because I know basically nothing about LED technology. But I believe for anyone that has painted roll hoops they may be interested in the LED's matching the color of the roll hoops...........or I could be way off. For me my roll hoops match the car which is arctic silver so silver LED's would be cool. Just a thought.
I think your original posting with the crest and the PORSCHE looked amazing. Very classy and a good size IMO.
Red lighting might cause some issues, being on the rear of the vehicle. Maybe some of our law experts can speak to that? Blue would be pretty sweet. Can you do a silver led or would it just show up white?
The cool white would be the nearest to artic silver type match. Silver boxster, white boxster. Charles has this awesome blue interior lighting... can't wait to see what the blue edge lighting would do for his (I also have the green you like, Charles!)
The module will be held by two little screws so it could be fun for some to source out their own led filters/diffusers (cheap, available online in most photography store) and do their own shades if required - just add a strip of that material on top of the LED strip and you get a totally different tone.
To start with I aim at using the primary LEDs (RGB), warm and cool whites. Warm white could be nice for those tan interiors... I'll try them all and snap a few shot no worries
Also have strips of "UV" lights (black light, call it what you want...). All good fun
LOL! That is pretty much what I thought
Fred, I am sure what ever you come up with, it will be first class! I like your original rendering, which is more or less what I have now, without the LED's of course. I would love blue or white lighting. Maybe a module that can do multiple colors?
I know what your deflector look like Bruce. In fact I got the idea from one of your pic and laser cut myself some sticker autumn '13 - Very same. Still got them
I know what you mean by using the RGB switching color handheld thingy. Problem being we don't want to have 4x wires coming out of that module. Forgot the name of those interior trims that snaps onto the boxster roll-bar. The module's power cabling will snake under these, exit from behind the headrest and go tap into the clam's brake light 12VDC (or where ever you guys fancy tapping current from... electric seats, rear defrost plug.. if not using the mirror defrost?).
I think those roll-bar trims will do just fine with only 2 small gauge RED+BLK wires without any issues. Add more wires and most likely that snap-on trim will need some glue to hold on instead
Dunno... most likely I'll have to order rolls and rolls of those LED if I want them from Taiwan. What I can do is give spare strips in all colors so you can chg them as you like. Mood lighting lol .....not paying much for LEDs these days I tell you ($2~3 each 200mm long strip? something like that....)
Awhile back we had a sponsor of the board that did the same thing, now their site is called WindRestrictor.com, at the time they did not offer the LED lighting on the Boxster but did the laser etching. Seems they will be producing soon.
http://www.windrestrictor.com/boxster_gallery/imgs/boxster_3b.jpg
How will yours be compared (Costs/Style) ?
The glass will remain in its stock format/size/mounting assy. The module will achieve the same result but with an emphasis on simplicity (compact, stealthy, heat managed). Without any fancy on/off switch, dimmers and the huge black box that's needed on some fancy setup I've recently seen out of JP. In fact, something I didn't like from that Z4 was that weird and huge looking black box coming out 1.5" off the bottom of the deflector. Other than that it was all sexy stuff.
That Boxster glass is tiny... hard to squeeze stuff in there without making it look 'heavy' lol
Cost-wise; of course mine will cost $3,845 more than all the other edge-lit wind deflectors that you can find In-The-World
Your original rendering looked awesome to me. I like the size and style you used. I would definitely be interested. PM me when you have it nailed down, please.
Oh oh oh. Christmas gift is a little bigger. At this point my wife asked "just what does 'stuff for the boxster' mean?" Lol.
Will you anodize/paint the clips?
^^^^^
You guys so so so cool, thanks for the support and encouragement, as always!
@Coaster - lol on the wife's comment. Clips will indeed be anodized and dye'ed in choice or colors. They'll have too if we want them to last 25 years. Noting harder than aluminum with a thick anodizing coating. Keep those for last, edge lighting on the box first!
Visited a factory where they process pmma acrylic - and others lol. Got samples and test etching those as I type. I puke my chest out when I walk out of there this morning... not the fanciest place I've been (oh man the smell there). The whole town is an 1.5hrs drive north-east of Shanghai (sea side). "Chemical Town" nobody lives there or around, and everybody working in the area looks a bit green :/
Anybody wants/needs a truck full of plastic?!
Just dropping in some visuals of the prototype assy and how things works, where's the LED strip located, how heat xfers to the module, wiring, etc.
As you can see, edge lighting is one hell of an advanced technology and require a great deal of brain power. Already thinking of rising the price from $3,845 to $6,000. Some other good news, I'll be machining/anodizing the module's front and back covers during the beginning of this week so hopefully I'll have something to mount onto the glass by this coming weekend.
I'll update then!
^ The module's back cover is machined out of 6061 aluminum and is a one-piece part! That lip (what the LED strip sits onto) is what absorbs the energy/heat generated from the LEDs. With the wind/air hitting on the module's heatsink it should be more than sufficient cooling to keep those miniature LEDs cool and happy
Haha yes, better enjoying SW because HQ is making it redundant by 2015 :/ We're moving to AutoCAD Inventor seats (only) both at the R&D and manufacturing ends. No more him on SW, her on AutoCAD, them on Catia, etc.... e-v-e-r-y-b-o-d-y will need to cope with Autodesk by mid 2015. Go figure....
RE Simulation. I have the SW Simulation module running on my workstation however the Flow Simulation is not (needed for air cooling type sims). I do my own simulations however but mainly to gauge designs/shapes/parts vs their types of materials (e.g. fatigue, stress, etc). A thermal analysis coming from me would be totally redundant in this LED application. All I could do is highlight how heat is transferred from one end to another. Plain thermal loads, convections and/or radiation per material in both transient and steady states. Boring and rather useless... without air. Given aluminum dissipate heat 2,000x faster than any other composites (e.g. plastics)... we can call it a safe $3 worth of LED strip investment (I think!)
Beside, try asking a Chinese manufacturer what are the "convection coefficient" values in BTU of their super High Tech LED strips. Luck with that mate....lol
On a far more important issue, I am having great difficulties selecting the right visual effect for the little guards red here. I kinda like the PORSCHE 986 best in all honesty but also like the one with the badge & Porsche (Bruce's).
HELP!
lol
Just throwing in these for inspiration. PM for the Illustrator/vector template if anyone is interested in making his/her own (I'll do those Made-to-Order no worries). Google "FREE VECTOR" for some ideas (tribal?)
Another suggestion, the wire to power these should be a pigtail with a connector on the end or the frame should have a connector that the power wires plug into. I'm thinking if you have to remove the windscreen for any reason it would be nice to just pull apart a connector and be done. Any ideas where we would tap into for power to light these ? Love what you have designed so far !
Well spotted. You are right and the only way I think it would work is by having a 'flat' style micro connector so it fits under the roll-bar interior trim (what is the name of that trim btw, mine are in leather... snaps onto the roll-bar, do these have a name?)
Something like on the pic below:
RE Tapping (hmmm still debatable). I was thinking getting the 12VDC from the clam shell brake light (nearest, easy to reach/snake too). I can provide a loom of about 2m long with the kit.
Wonder what our good friend Charles (member Particlewave) thinks about this idea. He is an Electrical Engineer by trade, and has a Porsche car just like ours. You think he'd be willing to help us out on this one?!
"Paging Mr Particlewave, paging Mr Charles Particlewave. Please pick up a white paging telephone. Your needed in the 986 Forum DIY Project Guides Room!"
No worries - he'll be here shortly.
I think this would be easiest for most.
Me? I'd run it down to the "ashtray" light so that it comes on automatically with the headlights/interior lights
The rear window defroster would be easiest but I'm not sure if it has 12V constant or switched power. You could even wire a splitter, and source the male/female plugs from Porsche. For the designs, I really like 'PORSCHE' along the bottom, because you would still be able to see out the rear view mirror.
EDIT: The defroster plug wiring harness is about $15, PN 986 612 081 01, likely a VW or Mercedes plug.
EDIT 2: The wiring diagram for the rear defroster plug is EWD-24 for MY '98-'00, two wires, brown and grey/green. Brown is obviously the ground, however the power (GN/GR) looks to be switched power.
Charles, thanks bro. Never thought about that ashtray 12v. Nice one man and exactly what I wanted to achieve (edge panel lights up when parking light/headlamps are turned on). That's how the clam's brake light came to mind.
Also like other's idea of having it switched on the defrost plug, if that's all feasible. Are you able to confirm that?
Decision decision....
A question I had for you is... let's say I want my edge panel to be 50% brightness when lights are ON and full 100% brightness when I hit the brakes. Anything you could design quickly... for those of us going "red" lol
(not sure if I understand how that clam's brake light intensity thingy is designed)
Scary... why do I get the feeling you'll go tell them
The official product for the 986 & 987 you'll certainly see soon is, The "Skybreaker" (LOLLL). No-no Porsche branded mate.
Now whether "you" want to add a Porsche logo to your window, that is all up to you. Sure there are ways for me to etch a rainbow if you'd prefer.
(FREE and bright advertisement for Porsche, not sure who would complain there). Following the ebay concept of the flags, carpets, center caps, what else's there lol
Thanks for all of your input and suggestions. After careful review of my options, I've decided to settle for this:
I think that will make my box look, sexy
Nah mate we know you wouldn't!
However, do feel concerned for Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, not for the OP! If you do find individuals using/replicating their high end technologies with ref. to PORSCHE then by all means, do report it. Raise it up...
Not for something that will only bring the "brand" max exposure. Which I'm pretty confident that my little edge panel is going to do just well in this respect.
On the legal aspect; Unfortunately it can't be legal to have non-DOT approved (made-in-china lol) Edge LED thingy on our cars so asking their legal advisor to guide you through the process (TM use request), I fear this could quickly become embarrassing. However very doable some will say, yes, in fact I know of one who've done it in AU for some aftermarket center caps.
In a meantime I promise to offer a wide range of beautiful Floral strains. Those from the south to those in Nordic regions - everybody wins!
I don't know what LEDs you're using, but if you're using color shift LEDs, here is what I'd like to see.
1. Powered on with the lights (using the ashtray light, or rear parking lights or what ever.
2. Have the ability to turn it off if I'd like to (maybe with a button in one of the blanks on the dash, or a switch in the center console)
3. Have the lighting change to Red when the brakes are applied (or a brighter red if you're already using red).
I think this could be really sweet.
BTW, this is my design choice:
Simple and still lets you see through the wind blocker.
I'm digging this thread.
Tony
Tony - top quality mate. Got to admit those are all great ideas! But, if you ask me, and as JayG already pointed out, we can't move too far away from the initial idea of having this edge panel designed with an emphasis on simplicity. We've getting way too close to our max/ceiling of $7,500 per unit :/
Regardless, I'll need to consult with dearest resident, and associate Electrical Engineer (Charles) on this and get back to you. I know that he is already working onto a piggy back (plug & play) module that will trigger the dual-intensity brake light thingy for us (Top man eh!)
Some progress:
I've finally settle for a manufacturer for the PMMA acrylic. Not exactly the cheapest but I have to say, they are the best in the entire country. Why I know? Cuz I've been looking for a full 3 weeks for these guys, spoke to 20 people, asked 10 others, visited 3 factories, and tried various samples lol
They are the ones who manufacture acrylic for pretty much all of the western companies (mostly transport industries). Most likely, most of the windows in the trains and airplanes you see around the world were manufactured by them. What they manufacture is only for export: ISO9xxx certified, all of the safety standards (TUV, DOT, etc) reqs and manufacturing processes in place, and they are the only manufacturer who can supply PMMA with non-flammable properties
And, we are friends now! Had a visit to my shop from the OP mgr yesterday morning. He is interested is what we do here in Shanghai so I think it's all good.... looks like we'll be getting some cheap (but good) window stuff
**Deleted** since tonichristi since I am associated with the site that was posted of which I am not. i was simply giving the OP an idea of what else was out there. I also did not like the personal attack and name calling he sent me through the PM. I certainly hope he is not like the others on this site since I have found nothing but helpful, adult people here until today.
Again, sorry that I tried to help, I will think again before trying to help someone again here.
Kewl - PMMA sorted, and all the AL6061T6 stocks for prototypes just came in!!!
That plate will be used for a custom fixture. Hopefully this will machine 4 (four) at a time. All from scratch.... off to the CAM work now! I'll grab a few shots of when this is cutting, chamfering and anodizing soon
(Rottie not included, sorry)
Aw man, that is a cool website! Thanks for sharing, didn't know they existed
I'll check with our Japanese counterpart here if they are okay with me publishing their website addy here. These guys took it to a whole new level 3D Edge lighting, 4 colors, and illuminated holography. Oh you should see that stuff..... lol
Got the 10.6 μm wavelength laser finally dialed in specific for this (weird) pmma material. Either that stuff is as hard as crystal, or we simply need a new laser. The stuff is so hard the feed rates to cut it needs to be turtle speed. 12mm/minute + air assit + new focus lens. For sure we're not dealing with regular plastics here :/
The etching turns out frosty - s-t-u-n-n-i-n-g. Very happy. Unfortunately this shot got snapped using my mobby... looks a tad better in real life. LED light is completely lost inside and the material is clearer than glass (92%). Pretty cool 'chemicals' I have to say.
Chopped some scrap/sample material so I have a template to work with when fitting the LED module. I just don't want to scrap a full window size piece of pmma atm. Hopefully this coming weekend I'll be able to etch my boxster's window (my flower lol).
And finally got the CAM work and GCODE done for the module. Mirror this 4 times over 4 coordinates and you got yourself a dedicated FANUC/ATC servo CNC milling machine cutting for 23.7minutes. So.... 5.925minutes per module/part.
^ For those who've never seen GCODE i.e. the code that gets output and loaded into the CNC controller, above visual is what it looks like. We basically need to understand and be able to write this by hand as most CAM software, still today, just won't do it all. Shop Geaks lolll
Just a gentle reminder, this is a "DYI" and meant for one to 'show off' what he does to his, and friend's, beloved Boxster car
I'll try to entertain, make it fun, and educational for others who I'm sure will learn a great deal!
Warming up the spindle on the CNC mill atm. Cold here in Shanghai this morning :/ arggg
Geezzz.... I am starting to feel a tad uncomfortable here
At your request I have deleted the only two references that I've made to your website. Which were in fact replies from a member gormalins8..... If you feel the need to removed his posts then might worth you sending him a quick pm. I had no objection him posting them at the first place no worries.
Some tip for you. If you don't want your image to leak and be restricted use/access only, have a look at "Google Web Master Tools". That doc will provide you with the technicalities RE how to code your website so pics remain under your full control. Sort of the same how Porsche and other Co does to theirs. Hence the reason you'll never see their pics in other part of the web freely accessible, with their dwload links pointing at other sources, etc. Just a tip mate
You do great work, carry on at full speed. I don't intent to commercialize my flowers for the boxster 987, the Z4, S2k or Cadies or anything like that. All I intent doing is a one of the nicest windscreen you'll see in Shanghai (and in-the-world) for my super duper eBay-sponsored Porsche Boxster! Now if some friends would want the same, I am all willing to share what I have mate. "Limited Edition lol"
I can't comment on the legal concerns that you may have I apologize for not responding to your message. We indeed do have those legal advisor guys at HQ that I'm sure could quickly advise me... I just don't want them to know I play with LEDs mate. If this ever go commercial (read Amazon.com!) you can be rest assured due diligence will be carried out before.
To the Great Panels
Windrestrictor, maybe you should be more concerned with not making a product that isn't well liked because you used cheap materials that no one liked. Then you wouldn't have discontinued it. It did shat work and you got shat results. Crawl back into your hole and let Nine8six do some quality work for his friends on this site.
NOOOooooo please please please MY DYI MY DIY MY MY MY MINE.
Slate 01, I was just about to ask a volunteer for prototype trial. PM your addy mate
Sending one to Charles nx week as well. We'll see if they are good (fingers crossed lol)
I'll give you the copyrighted images, but how is a light attached to piece of plastic capable of infringing your intellectual property? Wouldn't the Z4 that inspired this idea also be infringing on your intellectual property?
I believe Porsche holds the trademark to the logo featured on the windscreen, and it is likely they have also patented the windscreen that both your and Nine8Six's designs are based upon.
I must say I am very surprised that you have posted such an aggressive message on an enthusiast forum, that consist of what is likely the largest segment of your target market for your own illuminated windscreen product.
I hope that Nin8Six continues development without any further harassment, and I am very much looking forward to seeing his design, which I am sure will be very high quality.
my 2 cents for what it's worth...
since you brought up intellectual property, what exactly are you referring to?
Edge lit plastic signs? I highly doubt you have a patent on that, or do you?
Trademarks such as "PORSCHE" or their logo?
One thing is for sure, it is not highly unlikely that ANYONE on this forum will EVER do business with you. There may have been a possibility before , but I sincerely doubt it now
Fred is a very honorable man who has spent uncountable (and unpaid) hours developing some superior products for the enthusiasts on this forum and others. He does it not so much for profit (which he is certainly entitled to) but as something he enjoys and the enjoyment of helping others.
IIRC, He was not the one posting a link to your website, others were.
You will find that he will have a tremendous amount of support from not only this forum, but other forums as well
Maybe you should think about licensing his designs as they are far superior to your product.
Intellectual property rights; patents (pending or otherwise), copyrights and registered trademarks are sticky subjects indeed.
I think if Fred was strictly doing a DIY, and not planning to gain commercial profit, he would be fine.
Maybe Jake can chime in on this subject. He mentions it quite frequently in his posts.
Just sayin'............
TO
Our brand is monitored constantly we've spent close to 100K protecting it. We are fully informed about trademark rights. Trust me, we did not intend to harass, you will not see that from us. We did not receive any response at all when we attempted to contact Nin8 and now that he's removed our photos we will not bother at all. We've even taken down our post.
Windrestrictor® is the leading wind deflector provider in the world. We're licensed by Ford, General Motors and soon to be BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes and Porsche.
The Z4 photos that "inspired this idea" belong to us. This is what we were so concerned about. A simple google search will produce millions of results and images of our work. We manufacture for over 20 models. We have over 50 authorized distributors world wide and have 6 patents/pending patents.
We have no ill intentions and do not want to start any flame wars so we will respectfully bow out of this conversation.
To all Boxster owners, happy top down driving and modding in the new year!
this can't be happening.... illegal LEDs on some imported/DOT signed off for performance car lol
And a $100k worth of it.
Mate I would hate to do this here (and I won't) but if you really feel the need we can quickly publish which multinational tech giant owns the pattern of edge display tech already (Int'l registered in Japan since 1992, surprised?!).
I'd recommend you to edit your post before someone tags it again. You appear to be running a pretty cool and nice little company there. I'd keep it just the way it is if I were you.
Just a quick post for the folks at Windrestrictor: I was unaware of your company before this, and now, thanks to your heavy handed response to Nine8Six, I would NEVER purchase anything from you. In a single post you've managed to give your company and brand a very negative image - on a Porsche enthusiast forum with nearly 70,000 members. How dumb.
It was amazing, I woke up this morning to the sounds of a whiney, squealing dog, looked out my window and saw Windrestrictor running down the street with it's tail between it's legs. Way to go to our Forum members for stepping up and putting those idiots in their place (which obviously isn't this forum, nor will it ever be, apparently)
Nine8six, I PM'd my info to you as you requested.
to the forum members as well
Just a quick update...
Managed to get some prototype parts done Friday late eve. Projector kits for friends here has priority atm so once the machine is avail, those sexy blades rolls I promise.
Apologies for the slow development :/
You'd think CNC means "press the button" and you go pick up your shinny part at the other end when finished! Yea... it is the case occasionally! But very often (99% of the time lol) you have to machine your part using multiple operations. Some may also require you to design and machine custom fixtures completely from scratch. Fixtures are hard to make and in most cases... it's artwork at its best.
In the case of this simple 2D part, we only have the front and back to machine so the fixture is pretty elementary. But still, it takes a few hours :/ Those fixtures (some call them jigs) needs to be precision built & assembled if you want the tolerance to live up to your designs. That particular fixture & part tolerance's are both +/- 0.1mm (human hair?)
^ This is the fixture I've made to machine the back side of the blade. The part's profile was machined into the fixture at the exact same dimension as the top of the part. All you need to do is insert the part in that profile and squeeze it in there! That circular bore hole on top is where I set the machine reference relative to the part (digital probe finds the true center and pick up from there).
^ Those stainless steel hex screw is what secure (squeeze) the part in the fixture. Just needs a girly amount of clamping force for that part to stay snug and tight in there.
^ real life view of the fixture. No finishing, ruff on the outside but highly precise in the inside
Adv manufacturing lol
All left to do is the CAM work and GCODE coding for the bottom fact of the part. This is actually done from the CAD software directly with the part inside the fixture model. Once done... output that gcode to your controller, ref to the circular bore, and let it shred metal for 3.7min!
^ And you get this. High quality 100% aluminum machined part up to 0.1mm precision (the blade I mean, not the Chinese coca cola tin can!)
Doing projectors all of this weekend but I'll have time during the evenings of this coming week to anodize a few of those. I'll be starting work on the laser at about the same time so I'll update then!
Super LEDs for Porsche cars coming soon, stay tuned lol
Relaxing tho... you have no idea
1. CAM work 1~1.5hrs
2. Fixture design 30min (I did over a hundred of those... that was an easy one mate)
3. Fixture metal cutting & assembly 3~4hrs
4. Cutting parts (blades) 10~12min each for both sides
^ At my rate, I would have been able to afford 3x of those Japanese LED illuminated wind deflectors by now. Tech, LEDs and materials is additional to above; in all about 15~20hrs of R&D (personal time, hobby-pace)
Those flowers better be shining LOL
edit: if I may add, this is in the "0.1mm" precision/tolerance only. Possibly the easiest (imo) on the engineering & machining scale. You can multiply the time it takes for the same part by 10X for tolerance in the 0.01mm and below ranges (now that IS expansive! e.g. military, aerospace, etc)
As an (almost) old man, I generally don't like a lot of LED & plastic add-ons. I took a lot of 'rice' off of some Hondas I restored. I like clean lines and classic looks. I'm definitely going to want one of these though. Its a good upgrade from the original. Well done.
Hang on there, we'll give it our best shot
Not appearing rice with oversized Porsche badges and stupid bright LEDs is the "real" challenge on this one I tell ya. Just hope those mini LEDs will do just fine... kinda you have to look at it to see it. Barely visible but shinny (you get the idea?!). The last thing I (we) hope for is a freakin window to "distract" others (and myself lol)... that'd kill it I think
Just got to be nice, nothing else
finger crossed x
You are a very talented man, Fred! Very nice work, I have no doubt the finished product will be first rate
I am actually in Shanghai right now, got in yesterday evening, back out this evening. Are you anywhere near the Wyndham Grand Plaza Royale?
Arrrggg BRUCE, let me know when you fly this side again mate, I'll take your stewardess's out for karaoke. Might have time for a coffee or two with you also but prefer the karaoke idea better
No offence!
Flying a commercial jet airplane, landing it onto a dusty & wet runway with ATC speaking Chinglish to your headset... you don't need talent for that right??? lol
I'd love to meet with you, Captain, seriously let me know when you are back in town
I couldn't really comment on the move JK but let's just say there is nothing bad to say about any of those modern 3d solid software. Wouldn't want to be any senior mgt signing off on these changes/decisions - for whatever reason they may be
Today's solid software are all equally good - key players' of anyway. Autodesk, Dassault, etc... Don't under estimate Siemens NX and its add-ons, sinumerik ctrl tech i.e. design for manufacturing (ouch, game changer)
The're all excellent lol
You rushin' ?!
Nx time you do this I book you on a flight from CA to SH so you can come over to give me a hand for a full week. Rice, or noodles on me
Update is: this week's parts (projectors, etc) are anodizing today so in between ano runs I've turned on the laser and.... ruined a nice plate of pmma lol
Seriously, I had no choice. And why a HUD? Well that is one of the nastiest visual the laser will see here so that will help to gauge the intensity required for all sort of patterns/lines/thickness/width etc. You got it all in this HUD. We are getting as narrow as 0.2mm precision when 'burning' pmma with a laser.... it's pretty damn impressive in fact. Got 3 other panels to scrap over the weekend for trials, I'll post them up
^That's subtle, no?! LOL
Next: Got a few of those LED modules anodizing as well as other parts atm so I'll have a fully functional (look & feel) prototype during the coming weekend. Well, aiming for that anyway.
A little off topic, but speaking of lasers and HUDs reminded me of one of my former investments that didn't work out well:
MVIS
Cool laser projector product, but not the best implementation.
It might be useful to project a HUD from an Android or IOS device to the lower windshield. Lots of good driving apps are available.
Really hard to throw a close-up in HD of what the quality of the graphic is. Sorry about that. LED fuzz the pic as well... photgrx skills lower than mediocre maybe
That badge is slightly bigger than your thumb nail (less than an inch). Looking at it from a normal reading distance (15"), and not magnified x5 lol, it is absolutely impeccable. Love it, we're good on that part
888
I'm in, just for the noodles alone would get me there. I used to work in SF for a very large Chinese private school and got spoiled with my real white boy introduction to Asian food.
Put down the chopsticks and get back to work, lol
888
Nine8Six...congrats on the amazing work. I watched the thread on your projectors and your work is meticulous, great R&D.
I'm very interested in seeing the finished product and maybe getting one if it will ship to Canada!
Thanks! Yea we're good on the Canada shipping that's no worries there.
I'll update soon and hopefully have a fully developed LED Illuminated Wind Deflector kit for Boxster 986 by the end of Nov.
Too slow, I know. Apologies to those who are waiting
the things you do sometimes lol
Too bad you quoted that... I would have removed this stupidity. Not even funny.... Porsche'tastic... what on earth (pmma vapors you think?)
No progress at all, sorry bud.
The car is 12VDC everywhere so that where/what PS issue shouldn't become an impediment. I'm thinking about tapping into the ashtray's light circuit... lead dropping/hiding behind driver carpet, and flows under the console up to the ashtray compartment. I think you don't even need to remove the console to get it done... just push in the wire with your finger under it and catch it with a hanger from the ashtray compartment - then pull lol. Something like that... has to be easy. We'll see, I'll let you know what I did on mine for sure
Right... so these LED are bright - NOT subtle at all when ran over the full car 12v intensity lol You will be arrested, handcuffed and spend 30 days in jail for-sure if you run this thing on your car at full brightness (tried it on a dark night, in the garage, on my boxster). No thanks lol
And I can't really reduce the number of LED otherwise I won't be getting that wide angle light pattern. Required if your visual is wide e.g. you need the light to be the same intensity on both left & right side of the visual to make it look, real? cleaner... sharper etc
Solution: a dimmer :/
We're giving simplicity a whole new meaning already lol
Seen a few already-made LED dimmers here locally but all very strong looking (4" sq boxes and stuff, white color, cheap plastics, etc). Others looked more like household items instead of car parts and the rest had features on them that would just add up to the things that can go wrong. Who wants strobe and flashing features on theirs?!
So there you have it again, we'll just make our own. Been experiencing with PWM (Pulse width modulation) and narrowed down the best two. Saying best because those are the only I found under $1,750 that have an audible On/Off click feature on them lol Other than that they have the highest freq I could find >25kHz so no LED flicking and no interference with mobile phones radio or anything. What that PWM board does is power on/off the LED and dim the intensity (5%~100%). That's all! I know, boring lol
At last, a very important part (to me). Because that's all what it took to get this panel to look absolutely stunning and right-where-I-dreamed-it "Barely visible, but crazy nice when spotted".
Soooo happy I haven't wasted my time, so this is going ahead!
^ Below the glass is the two PWM modules selected for the job. I'm in discussion with the supplier to see if he can drop the price from 1,750 to let's say $5 each. On my side I'll design and CNC a small little box that will look good in our cars, and 'hopefully' small enough to be concealed in the ashtray compartment.
^ Equally happy to have received the led. Shipped out of Taiwan last week (samples, all colors). Man.... those PINK.... speechless
These sort of things never passes final stage. Wait until you see the mkII with a clearflex svga display... Ras Pi driven OBD Bluetooth reader with live dials showing on the windscreen HUD style. You get to see your car's gut stuff LIVE right up there in your mirror.
(^really hope I'm joking here). PMMA, sniff that stuff, gives you wings lol
Happy Thanks Giving to you guys there!
Hi Fred,
I've been following this thread since it's inception. You are truely amazing at product development. I like the windscreen and am waiting till it's available.
I hope you have a good weekend and wish you the best to you & your family. Happy Holiday
How about 2-3 layers of PMMA, each with their own LED strip and etch for an overlaid, multicolored, multilayered 3D effect?
Joking, of course...it would probably look cool, though
Interesting enough, this is exactly what those Japanese do. 4 colors... requires 4layer of pmma each with its independent LED color. Not a bad idea but gives a bit of a headache in all honesty
They also cast pmma with built-in micro mirrors (no kidding) and position them so a laser beams can create patterns and shapes.
The other one they have on display is the holographic 3D windeflector. Don't ask me how they do this... above my head lol The one I've seen was a V12 engine (Lamborghini or something like that...). Now that my man was impressive.
They do those for roadsters and convertibles while some other dudes call themselves the Best in the World LOL
* Not going to link anything/anymore or post wild pics here (LOL) so use your EN~JP translator and lookup for 3D wind deflector or around those keywords if you want to find them
Reality is PMMA multilayer vision will be for another life for me
Just got a tracking no. from the seller of the PWM module so we're all good on doing the modeling of the LED control box. Shark vents and all.... luxury dimmer lol
Got to go walk the dogs......
You are so cool, thanks mate
All the very same to you!
Out of town for two days so I'll be able to pickup work on the wind deflector this coming Sunday eve. Little boxes... who would have imagine lol
An illuminated Alu Boxster Logo in the little batwing.
I used a key chain Alu logo, which came with the back then brand new Boxster, stuck it into a milky plastic frame, used amber/yellow leds from an illuminated stick shifter to put them behind it and used the ashtray led Powerline to connect them with.
The picture is very roughly photoshoped to give you an idea, how it looks illuminated. I am sure, you could come up with a TOP Quality solution for that...or maybe even better ideas.
yuppers... (easy task after 14 years of ownership)
Batwing: +2 switches
CD-holder: +2 switches (with re-designed icons; photo is not quite up-to-date)
The original concept (no one uses CD/DVDs anymore) & design (not even illuminated and just too plain in that spot) is old and obsolete now.
Future idea is to install mini Sub+amplifier behind it, but keep the old-school front look & switches.
...catapult seat
...sprint Booster
...night vision display
...foot well light Switch
...spoiler activation / controll lamp
...Garage door opener
...nail release button
...Sport exhaust mode
...rear/front cam switch
...secure sat-phone line to austin "Danger" powers
...microwave on/off
...Disco Ball on/off
...just grind them icons down till the milky-white layer shows, fine black ink pen, clear coating on top, polish, done. Not a biggie.
Cool idea Bran! Adding or modifying the car's interior lighting is not the easiest task :/ Trying to keep a factory look to the car is by all means the most challenging part
While in the context of interior lighting... here goes some other glow-in-the-dark Top Secret project I've been working on. Simply meant to modernize the look & feel of the Porsche gauges... which in my opinion are a tad boring in their stock format. Design is simple, it's a copy of the common AL gauge bezels concept you find everywhere but custom made to accommodate micro LEDs. Also requires a custom made PCB that sit behind a diffuser made out of PC (frosty finish). All of that hardware squeeze inside the bezel, and sits on top of the gauge's face. All it does is glow on the face of the gauges.
I've put up the idea with the local Pcar community here and got pretty good feedback. Some also recommended adding Sequencial Shift Lights (SSLs) around the tach's bezel (top). Concept: microcomputer taps onto the RPM pins from the OBD harness, interpret that signal, lights up LEDs according to the rpm range!
Perfect useless gadget for the little Ricer in us
However I must say the gauge glow thing is phenomenally beautiful... having seen a prototype working already (in red, of course).
Perhaps in 2015 I'll get back to this work - we'll see. I want my WIND DEFLECTOR before
Been a while, sorry. Was off to HQ for our monthly last Friday's meeting and came back late Sat. I do appreciate these meetings as I get to see the team one month older each time lol
Design and Cam work is final on the LED controller box (the dimmer!). I had one spare 40" long 6013 billet aluminum slab so I've cut 15 stock pcs out of it to manufacture those little boxes. Great number because it matches the order the supplier of the PWM module sent me - I've received 15 of those little boards. So one for my boxster, and 14 spares lol
Also did (another) fixture to machine those control boxes. Goes fast... top & bottom machining operations, off to anodize and laser at last. Takes about 20min per box all together (not assembled!).
Great results, very satisfied with the quality. Solid, non-plastics, PWM works flawlessly and it has an audible on/off "click"... how marvelous lol
NEXT: Electric. Cabling, MOLEX connectors!
NEXT, NEXT:
INSTALLATIONNE!!!
Absolutely. I'll make sure to provide sufficient cabling lenght to reach to the dash.
Mine will be ON all the time lol Can't wait in all honesty....
(pissing rain, windy & cold here. at the shop cutting those blades as I type!!!!)
Just wanted to keep this thread active, so others that didn't see it before would take notice. I think there would be quite a bit of interest in this for their Boxsters.
Any updates to report?
Yikes! Apologies for the late one
Seen your post y'day but was stuck out of town and my mobby's VPN just wouldn't want to connect for some weird reason. That's right, 986forum is blocking conn coming from China.... we also need to buy VPN services to access most networks (youtube, twitter, 986forum, etc lol)
The update is.... I got all the electronics sorted this week so now it's off to testing the kit is harsh environments. 48hrs in the oven @ 120F non-stop and the same going on in the freezer at -4F. What I do is swing the "powered-on" kit back and forth in cold/hot/cold/hot. If it survives then I'll let those kits go out - not before!
I'll get some pics taken tomorrow and update soon.
p.s. slow progress... last weekend was our monthly Porsche car weekend out and this Saturday was my dogs' 3 years old birthday (out of town). Read correct... the dogs birthdays are celebrated. I know... I have pretty weird hobbies I tell ya lol
and tmrw the wife wants me to decorate the house and get it ready for xmas (she is hosting this year, not me lol). Can't believe it... more LEDs
Busy Busy!!!
A quick update on the "Skybreaker" wind deflector.
I have to admit that I am very surprised nobody flamed me for using that silly product name (yet anyway!). It's like calling your newly established budget Airline company "CloudCrasher". What if the skybreaker break... or what if it that new airline crashes... nah? whatever.... lol
Made a mistake to light ON the prototype (HUD) during our last weekend's Porsche car outing (yes, I had it lit up on my Boxster lol). A curious friend uploaded a few pics of that funny "ironman-style" HUD on the local pcar forum here and I got PM'ed with requests minutes after. How funny. Long story short, I have to plan making 10 additional kits for the guys owning 986s here lol Some facts and figures: there are about twenty-one (21) 986s in China only (that our little community knows of anyway).
Here goes a few shots of the electronic. That PWM box design and assembly is final and being wrapped up this week - nice little kit in all, I have to tell myself lol. Robust!
^ Here is a grab of what the internals looks like. Following recommendations, I've included a micro Molex connector between the controller and the wind deflector. That way if you want to remove your deflector (e.g. for cleaning) then the only thing you need to disconnect is that little micro connector (idea from member rfuerst911sc). The other end, the red + black wires goes to car's 12V. Most likely I'll be using the ashtray's light 12v but also looking at a dash option. Still unsettled on where to tap the 12v lol.... too many places I guess
^ The LED strip and the molex micro connector. The molex conn is 4mm wide X2mm thick. Shouldn't be hard to hide! I've soldered and secured the connection at both end, added a drop of industrial epoxy and wrapped it as far as possible with a quality heat shrinkable tube to prevent any lose up due to vibrations. Feels tight, solid. Works for me.
^ Adding to the inventory of parts required to put this deflector :/ How miniature. This is laser-cut from 1mm thick silicon rubber. Goes where the wires mates on the controller. Prevents damage to the wires when kinked or bent. Act as a shock absorber lolll Seriously, without it and with time, the wires would get damaged by the sharp edge of the aluminum-made controller box. So that's sorted.
^ Two leads of 3meter long each will be provided with the kit. Sufficient cabling for both ways e.g. whether you want to locate your controller behind the driver seat, or in the dash, there should be plenty of wires to play with there. The cabling is 26AWG gauge.... plenty to carry the small 90mA that the LED requires to fire up. Cable size is OD 3MM so again, easy to snake anywhere and hide (small is better, sometimes!).
^ So that's what going on inside the controller box. I use some pretty wicked epoxy and have been since 10 years. I use the same stuff to secure the wires inside that controller. Everything that contact this epoxy is clean using acetone before... or in other words, locked for life. I also use epoxy to secure the contact screws and the board's mounting points. Nothing moves there and again, to prevent any vibrations from losing up things.
^ This box is not serviceable (sealed). Not shown in the picture is a back cover made out of 2mm thick cast acrylic. It is opaque and mate black finish. This will also be epoxy onto the back of the controller box. Can't be opened once sealed. This is prevent the nine8six $7,238 worth high tech from being spied onto.... what if this falls into the wrong hands LOL
^ Shot of those nasty-to-make PWM controller boxes, the 25 boards, some cabling I've prep already, what else... not much really. Needs assembly, any volunteers?!
From the look of things as they are now, all it needs is kit assembly + Porsche Boxster Installation!!! I'll try to document what I'll do inside the car and snap pics of what-goes-where. Those pics above simply serves as spy-pics more than anything else. I'll be showing the real & completed kit shortly.
I'll get done this week, hit the dwtown roads and go for a quick photo shoot
I LOVE this wind deflector x1,000. Looks amazing in real life...
I am simply incapable to take great shots in low lighting :/ Hopefully my mate here in Shanghai will be able to hear me scream for his "professional" services. I'll try to get better shots of the car along with its new shiny feature and also want to take pics of all the colors I have here... some are pretty amazing i.e. cold white, blue and amber
ps. kit passed that brutal hot & cold 48hrs runs, looks pretty reliable. In fact the kit that went in the oven is on my car atm lol
I'll get pricing and availability shortly. Those can ship out right after xmas (to avoid being clogged in the mail system due to the holiday rush)
Nah just the brightness. Dislike those RGB strips... hard to find in micro size and most I've seen needs 4 wires to operate. That'd add a river of cabling to the 'already-small' deflector Porsche kit :/ I agree tho... it is the way to go
This kit's simple, 100% stock lookin. Had to be. One little 3mm wire that you can't see! Strips are easily interchangeable. Love the CNC blades look also. OH... and no more stickers. Etching looks absolutely stunning in day time. Stopped by the car this morning on my way to the villa's mailbox.... my excuse just to look at the official deflector LIVE on the car. Keeping this badge (screw flowers, for now)
Not a huge mod I know lol but anything that makes me and the car happy is a successful mod here
Thanks for the compliments guys. Grateful nobody flamed my 'pink' looking taillights
Is there any way to have a half red, half other color strip to support the break light idea I had? It should be easy..ish. I assume your setup is one or 2 wires coming out. My thinking is that you'd need to add one more wire to support the red LEDs. I'm still trying to get you to support that idea.
Tony
lol fair enough Tony. I'll see what I can do but really I wanted to get the kit out in a "as-simple-as-possible" format (12V +/- terminals, brightness feature, that's it!). At that point whatever you guys want to DIY with it is entirely up to you (fun weekend projects for some).
Dual-color = no, but dual intensity LED connected onto your brake light circuit is fine and really not complicated at all. One resistor + one diode and off you go ($1). You could tap into the brake light's 12v from the clam's brake light to enable your dual intensity. Vid below is how its done including hardware involved (bikes, cars, boat whatever runs 12DCV is all the same concept mate)
Tony - got those taken for you to see what's happening there. Wire-wise it's the safest/smallest I could come up with to supply the 12v to the single-color LED strip. Already small, 26AWG wires covered by a PVC insulation (OD3mm).
There's the kit... simpler than that is hard! Gave it my best shot anyway.
- Etched window (Porsche bracket not included)
- LED strip in color of choice + one spare
- LED modules/blades (CNC thingny, black, no Skybreaker logo no worries)
- PWM Controller (Brightness thingy)
- Lots lots lots of wire for you to cut lol
* NO CLIPs. Found out some retail those for as cheap as $5 these days :/ didn't know.... remember paying something like $60 incl shipping once for those clips
Made-in-China my friend. $9.95 (+ tax... about $7,855)
Get ready! Here goes the LED colors that I have in stock. The etching/design is entirely up to you. I have the scripts for pretty much everything already (Boxster, S, 986, some flowers, etc). Anyone needs to see a draft of what his/her chosen design will look like, let me know and I'll send you the design - or simply post it here. Custom work accepted, please do get in touch with me anytime!
Those will go on sale on Jan 1st 2015.

Wicked cool Nine! Now I just have to figure out what colour would work best on my Arctic Silver.
As to hooking it up - I'm no electronic whiz...what's the difficulty scale on getting this installed do you think?
Please blame USPS mail. It's already (stuck?) in the mail and on its way to you brother. With Bleu, white and red strips I think.... forgot the green sry
(just joking on USPS... I know it's a busy time for them)
Looks absolutely great! With my car being black and the trunk brake light, I think the red would be perfect.
So, will it come with a few other colors to experiment?
I'd like to sign up for the "Skybreaker" and can't wait. I guess all I need is your link to the purchase process. Don't have paypal at the moment but can set that up.
Awesome looking product, looking forward to your next creation!
^ You're on, no worries
I've received a few PM y'day and feel I should have said that before: members who've shown interest in this thread are lined-up (priority) for one of these kit. There is no worries on that. I'll contact you directly by PM before the 1st so you can grab your kit before they vanish. Counted 8 of you guys already so there should be few left anyway. We'll see....
Giller, I'll snap a few pics of what the ashtray light conn looks like and how I'll snake the wire under the console (possibly just by pushing it in with my fingers). Has to be easy mate. rfuerst911sc - hang on a few days I'll get you that S draft mate
Let's do xmas first
Merry Christmas to you guys
(^pic stolen from another forum.... not my children lol)
Saw that. And thanks!
@Clint, got your note by pm y'day. Give me one more day to get settle with the fact that I've just spent little over $3k+ for this year's xmas :/ Two day flip: One dinner, and one night out in dwtown hell where-ever-it-was; Friend's fault - don't trust "anyone" LOL
Back in my cave (work) tonite !!!!!!!
I just thought of a simple question (forgot in all the excitement) and forgive me if its been asked already - How does it look in the rear view mirror of the driver? Especially at night, I presume vehicles headlights that are following you are brighter than the intensity of the LED's and will overpower them so it should not affect rear view visibility at all but thought I'd ask. What have you noticed Fred?
Cheers!
Dunno about you guys but in terms of visibility, the Boxster doesn't provide much between those hoops anyway I have to use my side mirrors more than anything else on this car.
In all honesty I haven't driven the boxster with the badge+porsche etched deflector I have at the moment. I did however drove the car during an evening between Shanghai and Anji (3hrs drive) at the beg of Dec with that stupid looking HUD thing lol (was a Porsche car group drive-out... so HAD to show off a little!). Took me about 30min to get used to it really - you forget about it. Even illuminated you can still see clearly what's behind ya imho. Might be different if you etch the entire surface area of the wind deflector with let's say, a full size/solid American flag design, dunno...
I did get to see what it look like when illuminated when I was taking pics the other day. If you ask me... I think the red Porsche lettering looks quite cool from the mirror. Kinda liked it a lot in fact lol
Not sure if anyone told you but its already Jan 1st 2015 here!!! Just back from a friend's home party (2hrs drive for a 20km distance). NEVER go out on New Year eve in a 26million pop city. My first mistake of the year I guess
Happy New Year everyone!
Oh, and as promised, that best-in-the-world(lol) boxster wind deflector is LIVE and avail for grab:
Illuminated Wind Deflector Kit for Boxster 986 - English
Thanks Fred, and Happy New Year!
I have mine ordered with the Amber and Violet lighting options. Nice touch having the extra LED strip included.
So, to make sure I get it right when I brag to my friends: These were designed in a private research facility using high tech computer simulations:
...and a group of over 70,000 advisers:
...made with the finest available materials, and assembled in China by a Canadian?
BTW...ordered my deflector today. Unfortunately, the car is in outside storage so the install will have to wait a few months.
Look forward to see what others order.
Thanks and Happy New Year Fred and everyone else on this wonderful forum!!!
Ordered mine in cold white with the Red LED's as a backup(very nice touch). I think the problem most people will have is deciding on that color, most already know what they want etched.
Can't wait to receive it and show it off!!
Monday morning here, apologies for not sending individual updates - tough it would be okay if I just update here
Took those two shots yesterday eve right after I've finished putting your kit electronics together. LED strips and PWM controllers tested and now secured with your packing slip.
Also managed to get a half sheet of pmma sliced on the large laser table in 225*500mm panel sizes. Those are now ready to be cut to spec and etched with your designs into the smaller 4060 tabletop CO2 laser. I plan on getting this done during the evenings of this week. Off to my post office during the weekend... well that's the plan anyway (if no earthquake in between lol)
ps. tell your friends there is only 4 (four) kits left for grab :/ HUGE thanks for the support btw!
Oh, almost forgot... those CNC blades are being anodized this coming Wed. Normally starts the acid tanks twice a week (Wed and Sat). All good fun at this end, thanks for your patience guys
Hi Fred,
Happy New Year to you & your family.
Just a quick question on the design - I saw you have the "986" and you have the "S". Can you combine them into a "986 S"
Thanks
Don
Getting excited!!! Can't wait!! Thanks Fred for being so dedicated, you were working the weekend to ensure we receive our units soon. It is much appreciated!
Tony
The LED strip I am using is 5mm (width) * 190mm (length). Any brands will do if they come in those size.
Below is a visual of where they sit (highlighted in blue). That is 4mm wide and I have to mill a 1mm deep pocket inside both blades to acheive that perfect fit. Bear in mind, the OEM deflector window is 4mm thick. I admit you have a great idea but it's not going to be easy - if you are to stick to OEM size anyway (i.e. reuse your porsche bracket).
EDIT: Tony, just an idea.... make your own custom PCB with some 3025 dual-color leds. Doesn't have to be a "flexible" strip of LED specifically. That would work mate. Talk to Charles for schematics if you aren't too electronic minded... he does that when he sleeps this guy
I'm looking for a dual color 3025 ribbon strip and plan on replacing the second color with 3025 red LEDs, I think this will be the cheapest way to go.
Tony
Only when you get those in hands, let me know and we'll check clearances together. Happy to modify the set-up of the glass cut to accommodate those for you - if needed. Let's have a look first
Also had difficulties finding pre-fabricated UV strips in those miniature sizes. I NEED to find this thing soon...
And once I do I'll offer retrofit options $8 shipped - into an letter size envelope by snail mail
got them in a 8mm format only here... it's insane. Need them to fit "Porsche" lollll
Ultraviolet. We used to call this "blacklight" back home. Got those in hands but in 8mm wide strip. In fact they are 8.7mm wide... almost 9mm (huge!). UV offers a pretty slick effect on the etched part and I'm 100% convinced some would kill for that. 8mm wide is the smallest it gets when looking at (pre-fabricated) 3028 type led strips at this end :/
Like I said for your dual-color led, DIY mate. Design the circuitry yourself using those free online pcb design software and get a good 'express' PCB printing business to do the pcb for you - and just solder the LEDs yourself. Not going to run you cheap (e.g $25~50 for one pcb) but I can't see this happening otherwise, or cheaper anyway.
At the time it appeared nearly impossible to find a supplier for those pre-fab single LED in the 5mm width config already (quality-wise left alone). Had to come from Taiwan... nothing 'good' locally. I can't imagine this being easy for something that needs a larger circuit. Sure you could get away with it in that 5~6mm width but you'd need a dual layers pcb design (DIY!!!).
I'm pretty helpless here very sorry bud
I've heard it's not safe to keep a pet in China especially a dog. how does this work for you
is this your dog?
Also you should send email notifications to your previous customers when you have something as cool as that for sale. I'll take one if you are still making them
?!?! Tom, can't believe you are asking me about my now 3y/old puppy. Yes, this is my dog. One of them. I have two rotties mate (male, brothers). Hobby, serious one.
And NO, our Chinese friends does NOT eat dogs or cats. South Asians (old generation) sometimes do but that is phasing out. Happens in South China only. Mid and north Chinese (90% of pop) people does not, they are embarrassed and repulsed by this weird eating behavior. Chinese care about their pets as good as anyone else - if not better (in many of the cases I've seen anyway).
Dogs aren't safe "in Canada" man. I had one of my rottie (Prince) shot dead by the RCMP in 1997 while they were carrying a raid on a neighborhood house (summer/country house, dog was loose that day). Won't go into details - its a car forum.
Yes - there are two kits left/available. Thanks for the sugg btw (touché, and sorry)
I had a run in with mr wind restrictor lol ( I shared Nine8six's project on a boxster group on Facebook) He called his product cheap and to get a real wind restrictor ..... lol but he ended up deleting that comment and replacing it with this, then followed by offering a discount
That's a "DIY" light kit for the existing plastic frame screen.
This one is a real wind deflector with steel bracket system, ambient lighting, accessories and all. 3x stronger than the OEM screen. WindRestrictor® Brand.
Poor chap must be feeling very insecure at the moment, I don't blame him for running his less-than diplomatic campaigns everywhere he can. e.g. Stylish looking & CNC out of AL6061 blades, anodized, 1200DPI etching resolution graphix, OEM looking, ouch loll
I have no idea what Windrestrictor.com aka kingpennindustries.com products are like - I have never purchased one from them so its impossible for me to make a judgment. Guess someone will need to spend over $300 to find out.
RE cheap, well.... he is not far off there lol that was the whole idea and the goal when I started designing the kit that you are looking at. I could make them even cheaper and use painted sheet-metal "steel" also LOL
Thx for sharing this info Martin, very interesting....
haha not to mention he had his employees liking his posts haha
I can't wait to get this installed and the projectors :P I am like a kid waiting for christmas over here :P
Mr Windrestrictor is a prime follower of this DIY thread. He should have knew better that the kit he was looking at wasn't a threat to his business. I've mentioned earlier that I had no intentions in mass-producing those commercially, even less duplicating/applying the design to other convertible model/make.
Reality is... those are limited quantity and available to 986forum.com members only. I challenge anyone to find this product listed elsewhere (ebay, amazon, etc). It is clearly listed as a "Limited Collection" and temporarily advertised as such on a totally irrelevant website (one kit left for grab).
What Mr Windrestrictor failed completely is taking up to 17 years to make one for our Boxster 986 - go figure. I desperately wanted one and they were not available and the only alternative/kit I could find was from his competitor made in Japan at an exorbitant $375 excl shipping.
Therefore - I made my own. Completely different design: glass mounted, slim, ultra-lightweight, stylish, heat managed, and easily retrofitable with any commercial LED strips, etc (perfect kit, durable, versatile, affordable). And in return, for having saved tons of cash by taking advice of top quality members here, the idea was to make them available to friends only (both here on 986forum and on our local pcar forum here in CN).
My little (cheap?) way to pay back to the community.
That's what it is. (was, initially) Keep reading.....
However, and after what happened earlier in this thread (PMs, threats, etc) a lot of people here, friends, employer and family recommended me to do the complete opposite (they are all following this thread as well). My employer, who also follows this and the projectors threads, registered the int'l PATTERN for the "AUTOMOTIVE CONVERTIBLE WIND DEFLECTOR LED DISPLAY" using their pattern attorney, all-at-their-cost. (i.e. not exactly cheap). Never in a million years we thought it would have passed with the int'l IP authorities (no other countries have appealed the pending application, not even USA, officially approved end Dec 2014).
INT'L PATTERN #: 201420777892.1 (not the common 'pending' fake thing, that's the real deal i.e. paid for)
APPLICATION #: 2014121200489000
OFFERS: AUTOMOTIVE CONVERTIBLE WIND DEFLECTOR LED DISPLAY
IP AUTH REQUESTER: SIPO.GOV.CN
My employer owns the aftermarket kit... not me (if anyone ask). Clearly he's not a huge fan of undiplomatic and rude business players. And before anyone ask, I have no idea where this is going... not my call.
I'm busy finalizing those 22 kits for you chaps here this weekend. Mood is gone.... quitting this thread for a while
(That info Martin.... really got me pissed this time. Not your fault I know)
^ Anyone need this "officially" translated this into English, it cost $245. Get your legal advisor to PM me for empl contact details
Fred
Ignore the bs. Not worth the emotional energy. Ranks lower than cats, car flipping, gun storage, or oil choice.
I admire your work and would like to add my patronage by putting dibs on that last kit. Still deciding color & pattern.
Thanks
Me think that Mr. WindshieldRestrictor (aka Mr. No Penis) will not be selling many products to anyone on this site or to any others that we all may have influence with.
Sorry for the stupidity, Fred, we all like what you are doing.
Can we blame my silly emotional thing on too much sniffing pmma vapors?! Ducted & fan ventilation sys or not, you still can smell & puff-it real good. I SWEAR I was looking green when I woke up last Thursday morning :/
I'll have some more kits in about 2-3 weeks no worries. We need to have a few spares just in case also lolllll Got to assume they're all going to fail, blow your ashtray fuse, and catch fire during their first week (according to the latest online gossips anyway).
Tony, Tom, keeping one for you guys as well (reserved)
That gtp site got some pretty cool features I have to admit. Lets you sign-up for an instant notification when stocks are back (see grab below).
About that gtp site, if anyone have any concerns: its conn is encrypted with quality ssl from Comodo and the platform (Magento) is maintained with the latest security patches hours after being published. Host's files & folders and given the highest possible permission and that from the server /root acc. I rent a dedicated server mainly for this purpose (no no compromised cheap shared hosting pkg for me thank you very much). Host/server is based in SoCal (InMotionHosting), and so is your data (got nothing in CN, I use offshore bankacc also lol). So.... go ahead, technically it is the best I can offer in terms of ecomm and support atm (I'm not that 'cheap' no worries loll)
Sold out indeed - Thanks x1,000 Rick! Sending you some visuals shortly (this eve)... you sign-off on what's best for you mate. Can't thank you enough man
Got my mate Andy here today helping me with packaging. Its almost fun... sunday 1030am we need to cut 60 something pieces of carton. Custom-made packaging! I'll take pics of that, worth it lollllll
I went to the Whiningdickster site to review the 986 product and wasn't overly impressed by the site or the product. There is a subtlety in design that N8S understands and Whiningdickster completely misses. Must be over their head. The geometry of their product is clumsy, and the overall presentation, particularly when lit, is in your face enough to be ricey. I prefer something a little more carefully considered, refined and subdued that draws you in with attention to detail and not how sparkly it is.
Nine8Six if you decide to make more deflectors, count me in on the next round. I had one of horses go lame about the same time you offering the first group. If you think a 986 is a black hole to throw money into, try owning horses. Glad the forum has a member like you.
I've ordered one peace and would like to connect it to the available outlet for the back window heating. Can anybody help me with the designation/type of the connector used for that?
Its you! wasn't sure (thx btw)

thx J
Fred,
You have more than earned the right to be sarcastic, even get a bit cocky if you like.( which you don't )
Your part-time "hobby" products are far and away higher quality and overal better that's the stuff others are floging from their "professional" companies
Got your back, Fred!
No one shall stop you and your awesome work...
btw...another little idea, as ambient lights are becoming so popular:
3x3mm plastic inlays with side smd/led, maybe?
I have been following this thread from the beginning and have wanted to order one of these for some time. If you make any more I would sure like to get one.
Don't forget you can go to Mr. SmallPenisRestriction and order one made from crappy material, with inferior engineering and get the awesome privilege of paying twice as much for it.
All kits have been meticulously assembled, tested, and set-up to customer's reqs (design, led colors). No mistakes!
They are also out as off this morning! I now have everyone's tracking numbers in hands so I'll update the gtp site with those # at some stage before the weekend.
The usual shots
^ 17 kits for USA, CA, DE, and UK. before it leaves to the post office y'day evening. 5 others kits left in the mail using the local carrier's boxes... to add expenses to transport (nasty buggers). Those 5 kits were for some friends here in Shanghai, Beijing and one in HK. Soon 22 Porsche 986 will look pretty damn cool (eta 10~15days)
^ So this what Andy and I have agreed onto for pkg. We've spent long hours trying to find pre-fabricated 'keyboard style' boxes. Huge fail, all of what we found would have bent. So we went custom! Ordered a few one square meter of AB type carton (7mm thick) with a super hard side. Easy to bend but once dbl-rolled (15mm) it's all hard shell and ready to be trashed by our kind mailmen. Unbendable + Reinforced corners + Lightweight. Oh, and cheap!
^ When you'll receive it, no-no long scisors and blades...use a short blade to cut the corner reinforcement first
^ Bagged the hardware, your spare LED and other inside the box. Don't drop it on the floor or you may damage your spare LED strip (e.g. controller box weight falling onto the LED strip, dunno... could happen). LED strip is protected by the cabling but who knows for sure.
^ Pkg unfolded completely and the glass shows up. Clean your hands (no finger grease on the Skybreaker lol) and unwrap it onto a soft and clean surface (e.g bath towel). Use a 9v battery to let it shine for a few min, and store back in the original pkg until installation.
^ I've left the protective adhesive for assembly on the back side. I've worked on the kit from the adhesive side the whole time :/ Haven't touched the exposed/etched side a single time lol and treated your deflector the very same way I treat my Canon cam lens and other precious glasses. Hope you can do the same
^ Your LED choice #1 is already installed in the module and mounted on your win deflector. I'll document a few installation methods shortly e.g. Where to make the little hole inside your bracket for the wire to pass through and how to slide this in your existing bracket in the simplest possible way (nx week!)
^ There is the full content of your order. Cheaper than that you die lol
^ Included/additional in all of the kits is a 2mm Allen Wrench and a miniature Porsche metal badge. If you don't know where the badge goes... it plugs on the side on your racing shoes with hot glue
I'd like to thanks again to everyone who've supported this kit or shown interest
. You guys are simply the coolest crowd I've had the opportunity to share stuff with. I will be eternally grateful for all of the supportive comments and kind words!
Got a few projectors orders from you guys on stand-by (apologies btw) so now we're all good and free to move onto getting those done. Making gt projectors will always remains what I like to do most and do best!
There is the sum up on the design's weight if anybody cares to compared it to the TUV and DOT approved standard for automotive wind deflectors. It is within its DOT regulated 5mm MAX thickness as well. Yes, wind deflectors' sizes & weight are defined by the automotive regulators... if anyone cares to know. There are safety reasons why Porsche and all other auto makers do not use thicker (heavier) materials when engineering their wind deflectors.
I personally think I've done pretty good (+20 s'thing grams, with the adhesive also lollll). The weight of a pack of bubble gum. Anyone care to call the Skybreaker a cheap kit I'll say screw steel
^ There a grab of the complete assembled kit on a scale with a 1g resolution.
^ and there is the weight our original DOT approved PC made glass from Porsche
Enjoy!
I like my Englis'ish - thank god there are pictures to explain things LOL. Truly sorry about that and I'll try to improve I promise..... I often submit without reading, awful results lollll. Was late to catch a morning bus sry :/ Excuses excuses... all valid
Woo-Hoo!!!
Thank you so much for the update and pics Fred. I'm very much looking forward to getting the Skybreaker installed and answering the "Hey...where did you get that?" question,
I think the only concern I'll have is some thief trying to make off with it. Will have to make sure the top goes up every time.
Thanks again Fred for your meticulous attention to detail...just amazing!!
All that I can say is WOW! This wind deflector is absolutely awesome! I haven't been on the site in a while and thus missed the opportunity to order one of these beautiful creations
Is there any chance that there is going to be another production run? I need this upgrade!!
I echo davedeck's sentiment - Nine8Six, when/if you have more, I'm IN! I've been away for awhile since my 986 has been having the wiring harness replaced (hurry up and wait!) so am just seeing this thread. I'm very impressed! Bravo.
Tolen, thanks and sure will mate. Aiming to start working on making another batch beg of Feb. Those should be ready to shoot in mid February aprox.
Also in the not to forget "To-Do-For" list is:
Amagala, TMStewart, davedeck, Dualist, AP328, mump, doctorm3
I won't lie I've received 6 or 7 PMs from fellas asking me to keep a kit for them as well. And I believe there is 5 registered on the GTP site's instant notification list atm (seen you've reg Tolen, Tony and Tom also)
I'm starting to lose track of who comes in first, priority etc and wouldn't want to miss out anyone. The best thing to do imo would be to register to get that GTP site instant notification - that'd be a tad easier for me. I can see who is subscribed to that notification thingy so that gives me an rough idea of how many I need to make.
^ see where
red
stroke is
Thanks for the link. I put it on my wish list if that's what I was suppose to do. I presently don't have a wind stop so I will need to buy the brackets. I want the crest and Porsche lettering in red
Got you all guys in now, for sure I'll make aware before but putting down your e is the best way I have to make sure I'm not missing anyone. Thx for helping btw
On another IMPORTANT note
. Friend here in SH damaged his window with his wrist watch y'day eve. The latching thingy on his watch was rubbed onto the glass a few too many times. Happened while installing the window inside his bracket. He admitted being careless but that didn't necessarily help making the morning coffee taste a bit better :/ Just heard a few min ago
Careful with the glass. What is considered a large scratch is unlikely to show during poweroff - quite similar to our oem Porsche window. However when "illuminated" you'll possibly see this scratch quite clearly (a fact; pmma is clearer than glass... light travels easy lol). Although it is possible and effortless to polish those acrylic windows back to brand new, it will NOT be possible for a 'wrist watch' heavy scratch to buff out without great efforts lol
He sort of rescued his with PlastX apparently... but it nearly took an hour. Offered to make another glass at no cost, feeling responsible for not having warned him.
Please be careful. It real easy - just treat as jewelry until it's mounted there on your Boxster and that will do just fine.
ps. a replacement glass & etch job will run at $30 + shipping. We are looking at a grand $60-worthty-scratch from the usa side if anything uncool happen to our not-so-cheap(after all) SkyBreaker. Fear imposed hehehe
And please do not clean it with window cleaners.
Anything heavy chemical on acrylic will craze the glass long term - polishing is useless in contamination cases. Recommending hot tap water with "hand soap" detergent (or similar fda approved).
Dove soap with lavender fragrance works lol
Youtube schools on how to clean acrylic, and how to repair a 'heavy' scratch. Pretty easy... just hard on the shoulder when it happens lollllll a must watch
Sure can. Also, info ahead of time possibly, but I also have smoked/tinted windows here and those fancy fluorescent acrylic glasses as well (green and orange atm only). Thinking about offering a whole range of oem replacement windows - with or without the LED Illumination or with or without etch design! $7,855 each of course...
Still experiencing with those (having fun!). Not that I would imagine anybody going for an 'orange' wind deflector but sure looks pretty cool loll Again (pls don't flame me) it's just fun options for some out there.... in case someone have this crazy modded Boxster somewhere... wants a wind deflector nobody has lollll
Clear fluo green anyone?
LOLLL
Hi Nine86,
I have been following posts etc on this Forum for around a year now on and off but didn't join until today.
I've had the same model Porsche as you for the last year and absolutely love the little lady!
I have been toying with the idea of purchasing a wind deflector from Porsche here in Melbourne Australia now for sometime, but have been put off by the last person I spoke to suggesting that driving with a wind deflector installed makes more turbulence than without one. And said he actually had a few hats blown off because of it LOL.
Anyway, I don't care, after seeing what you have created Nine, I so want one. Devastated that you are out of stock
:ah:
Anyway I just registered to be informed when you have more on that link you provided at
The ultimate bi-xenon headlight retrofit kit for Sport & Super cars
My 986 is Maroon and was thinking a violet illumination would look amazing. Here in Australia we're not allowed any kind of illumination on cars that is red (except for brakes) or blue those colours are reserved for Police and emergency vehicles. At least that's what I have been informed.
Anyway mate. I have to say from go to woe I have been so very impressed with your absolute brilliance and dedication to this DIY project, I hope you make a bundle out of it mate, you MOST certainly deserve it. And thank you for making the price affordable to us that don't have a lot to spend and the exchange rate is so bad LOL.
Hope to get notification soon that you have more in stock. Take care 986 and thank again!
John
Just wanted to add my congrats for such a brilliant DIY project. Thanks, for making it available to us enthusiasts!
I put my name down for one to get notified when you have stock, Can hardly wait to order it and get it installed.
 This is my can't wait dance

1998 986 Tip Base.
This is awesome, what a great inexpensive product to really customize your car. Just signed up on the GT website. I'm still not sure what color/design combo I like the most. I'm thinking design 1 in Red.
Although Nine8six I see your located in Montreal, any chance I could get one with a Blue Blanc Rouge design to go with my PK license plates? Just an idea the CH is Red would be sweet!
Hi again nine8six,
I was just wondering, if it would be possible to have a little more spacing between the PORSCHE letters on the screen?
Something like P O R S C H E
I know it's just a personal preference thing but Porsche themselves seem to space the letters out a bit when they stick them on cars. I recently took the Black Boxster script off my car because the 'r' broke and I decided to replace it with Chrome P O R S C H E lettering, and as I said it is just personal preference but I like the extra space between the letters. Have a look at the pics of the back of my car attached and tell me what youthink
Thanks again Mate! You're a STAR! Still waiting hehehe
Hey Jon, kind words mate, thx. All the same to you. Cool car also
I'm not 100% sure its a pref thing, think its designed that way - for a wide trunk anyway! You wouldn't want the P word to look small on a wide object, especially not for a big brand lol. Porsche AG had to give up the tall fat Porsche branding, its passed now. The new pcar rear badge is indeed the stretched p o . However P brand logo remains the same anywhere else. The True Purists!
Our WD is not a wide object at all. Its mini. I see the original idea best fit (there, sharing personal opinions with you lol). I think you should just go for a crest alone - subtle, nice edgy glow and that's it mate. You got your P badge already on your hood.
In amber of course. Your red tone gives a smooth feel to the car, and amber gives exactly that effect. Also nearly exact same color as your gauges and interior lighting, can't make the diff if not told I'm sure.
some inspiration for you (and lots of blah, sry)
Hey Nine,
You certainly deserve all the accolades you get but don't get a big head LOL.
Thanks for your input much appreciated, I think you are correct! Just the crest and in Amber is exactly what I will order when you have stock.
Cheers mate keep up the good work!
Jon
One of the last pics I uploaded with the PORSCHE and Crest on the Trunk had a standard sized Badge on it same as on the hood, but I found that didn't look too great under the lettering (personal opinion). I found a German ebayer selling these smaller badges that go on the steering wheel with a single fastener pin on the back. I bought a couple off him. When they arrived I thought it was a much better size for the trunk, so I cut the pin off and filed the back of the crest smooth (I didn't want to drill a hole in the trunk) then I stuck it on with 2 sided 3M tape on the trunk. I think the smaller crest under the 'S' looks OK.
Big head lollll I know, sounds like that eh lol Funny I was very recently diagnosed with an inferiority complex by a one of our dearest member here (another thread, for having modded my boxster!). Could also be suffering from a superiority complex, dunno... whatever you call what is remotely happening to me - and it's that
Get a cold white as spare LED and you'll be all set for a few topless summers
Glad I could help
lol
Looks like I've robbed a few of you on shipping fee (hehehe). I'll issue a refund as soon as I can no worries (despite my near-to-perfection scam act loll).
I've also adjusted the flat rate$ for a 950grams parcel on the site also, much cheaper. What happened is I was using official quotes preset to old round up numbers - as explained in the old policy. Which was 1kg. I swear the Postal Service here used to round up numbers by as much as half kg for Int'l Air Mail... somehow this seems to be something of the pass. So everyone wins, and I get to figure out how to refund the diff to seventeen good fellas :/ failol

wishing good weather to everybody
Hey Nine,
I obviously can't speak for those you "robbed" hehehe but if it was me there's NO WAY I would accept a refund. Gees mate ALL the work you put in for this DIY a few cents is not gonna break us. In comparison to all the thieves out there in industry, "like the last one who put their objection to your DIY" name withheld for possible litigation BAHAHAHA your product is not just 1st Class but extremely reasonably priced. PORSCHE themselves should learn from that. I know they have a brilliant product but let's face it they are profit mongers there I said it LOL. Do you reckon you made a fan here Nine...lol
PS. The weather here at the moment is summer, I went for a drive last night with the top down temperature 28 degrees CELSIUS 82 Fahrenheit.
So wish I had the deflector on last night so cool. I will definitely get the white LED set as well.
I am definitely leaning toward design #1, however, I thought that this may be a good design choice for those of us with a little "redneck" in them! What do you think, Fred?
Seriously? It's cheaper to ship to Canada than the US or Europe? And here I thought Canada Post was super expensive.
Anyways, I'm sure none of us would have thought twice about this Nine - but I will say this only adds to your already excellent credentials on here. Thank you.
Hang on Martin, running to the garage to take a pic for ya.
Didn't expect you to receive it within a week
geez, Go Go Canada Post huh! (for once lol)
be right back mate
Have a look!
Embarrassing because I'm sure 17 other guys will have a better way to get it done.
But this is what the set-up looks like on mine (no flaming please!). Don't remove the trim "completely,
just loose it up
is fine (use plastic flat bar). Well, if you plan on replicating this setup anyway. Not recommending removing the trims... just in case the clips are dry as raisins (1997 loll)
^ I think it's all goodies. Nobody will notice or care. Worth it; wait until the sun goes down you'll see what I mean lol)
Fieldfit, looks good. One word of advice be super careful. It scratches very easily. I handled with microfibre and still managed to scratch it but still looks amazing
Fred got any pics of the wires going into the console
Outdoor, dusk time, coastline in the background, Skybreaker lit up.... I'd pay for one of these pic
You can scratch it as much as you want, any plastic 'polisher' works in all honesty (Novus, PlastX, etc). 2 min buff with a microfiber and it comes back brand new looking
Just don't scratch it with a solid stainless steel "wrist watch". Also don't use WINDEX or any strong chemical on that thing - ever - and it should last you a few years.
No connection pics at the moment Martin -stop embarrassing me lolll. Planning on reaching/snaking the 12v lead wire to the clam's brake light and terminate there (that's also on the parking light circuit). When I'll have time I want to do that brake-light dual intensity retrofit thingy.
Just passing these pics over just to make sure nobody misses them.
- NO cleaning the clear acrylic with dry or dirty cloth (clean, wet, warm water)
- NO strong chemical whatsoever on it, it will craze the acrylic (e.g. windex)
- Requires periodic maintenance. Buy a sml btl of plastic polisher next time you visit you auto store. Polish 1-2min with a wet microfiber. You will see those micro scratch when it's illuminated, they go away after a quick 2 min polish. Acrylic is silly easy to polish (must watch on youtube)
- Take lots and lots of pics. Its good fortune Chinese ppl say
Even at $7,885 it would still be worth it bahahahaha. Incidentally guys please please please give comprehensive instructions on fitting and connections etc because I am the WORST DIY person. I am literally useless at doing anything on the car short of checking the oil adding oil and coolant.
embarrassing.
Thank you wish some of you guys were close to me I feel soo alone lol.
Jon - there are 20 different ways to feed it its 12Vdc. That's what the whole car runs off from so it can't be hard. The kit even runs off a 9V battery and will last for daysss lollll
The ashtray's circuit was a bad idea from myself however... it a 6.6volt circuit. That will teach me to listen to the others (Charles? you there?!)
I'll tackle the rear clamshell brake light for my set-up tomorrow morning if weather allows. I'll report back on that. Some will want to hook it up on a dash switch, others on the center console window switch, where else.... rear brake lights circuit, etc etc
Let's see what the others do for theirs Jon - and then let's copy them lolllll
Say what?!
I'll have to check mine out. I didn't take a voltage reading when I swapped the bulb for an LED, but just calculated the resistor for 12V, assuming it was so...
All I know for sure is finally, finally!, I know something you don't on the boxster car ahah
996 are 3.3v also
I was toying the idea and found the intel on RL (goog'ed). Got me interested, and found a fella link here ref to the 6.6v. The power of the internet huh! Mistake. Silly human behavior... always last minute. Just wanted to dbl-check Sat morning before making more of a fool. (glad I got you in with me, thx btw loll)
Goit it hooked up on an old usb cable/cigar style atm. wires running down quietly and unnoticed. Big head sry
My Dream: Let the brightness ctrl sit right there in the shelf bag, behind driver's head. I want to reach to the brake circuit as permanent solution (SkyActivMode lol)
Sat morning is breakfast with wife and play time for me until 12noon! There you go. Will report soon. 100% I want to hook it up on my right tail light' loom. We'll see, still thinking (window switch!)
If one day someone makes a dual brake intensity diy!!! I'll subscribe for sure
How I installed My Windstop
Step One -
Carefully push the windstop clip and pull the windstop towards the back of the car. The wind stop should pop out easily and without much force. ( Take care not to break the clips )
Step Two -
Once you have your windstop out pull the bracket away from the screen. The bracket should come away relatively easily.
Step Three -
Line up your illuminated windstop to the bracket. You will have to drill a small hole for the cable to run though. I used a small drill bit and drilled from the top down, then from the bottom up applying pressure along a horizontal path ( so the connector can slide past )
Step Four -
Install your illuminated windstop into the bracket and install it onto your car. You will want to keep the protective sheet on the windstop for now. Make sure the wire runs towards the driver side. I used a large flat screwdriver with paper towel wrapped around the tip and pushed the wire into the gap on the roll bar cover.
Then keep running it around the back of the seat
Step Five
Run the wire into the seam of the access panel down leading to the arm rest cubby
I removed the ash tray, and the ash tray housing to access the ash tray light circuit.
I fed the power cable up underneath the parking brake. Once I had the wire where i wanted it, I tucked the wire up inside the console ( see the above picture )
As per the image above I soldered the wires into the ash tray circuit. Once done I wrapped with electrical tape and re installed the ash tray.
Sorry for any mistakes and Fred/ Charles please add in if i did anything wrong!
Hopefully this helps as a reference for you guys.
PS Fred thanks for making such an amazing product!
Aw, man! My inferior superiority complex hurts, haha!
You are correct, Fred!
Ashtray light circuit
Don't mind me, folks. Nothing to see here. Carry on.
You make my superiority one worsty :/
I'll dbl-chk on the 97-99 tomorrow. Martin got the S all new model, these guys have better electronics as it appears
Wow man. You've just made 16 good friends right there.
17 incl me Martin
ps. Try to hide the excess cabling under the carpet, somewhere, somehow. Mine is in the driver seat rear pouch now loll (prefer your idea tho)
Oh I fully intend to wait, and see what you clever people suggest is the best way to go about it! So I gather running it to the ashtray light is now out because it's 6.6v. But if that's the case how was it that it worked for Fintro11? I'm so confused lol
Brake lights sounds like a good idea.
I'm also trying to source out a couple of the wire mesh deflectors to complete the look. Didn't even know those existed until I saw them on your cars
Yeah, I'm in the same boat as Charles. Mine have been stuck at Customs for over 4 days now! I am hoping they get unstuck before the weekend at least, so I receive them next week. Keeping my fingers crossed!!
I can dbl-confirm that Martin's ashtray install methods works just perfectly. The circuit is indeed 6.6volts however it delivers 9V when the SkyBreaker is connected. More than enough current flows to power ON the kit. Looks good!
1) Remove ashtray
2) Unscrew the two torx screws
3) Pull out the assembly and set aside (no need to unplug anything, switches etc)
4) Splice both brown & bleu ashtray light wires and terminate as you wish (soldered mines, covered with 2" of electrical tape. Sufficient)
Brown = ground (goes to SkyBreaker black)
Blue = positive (goes to SkyBreaker red)
No need to remove the console, the cabling is so small it's easy to push under with your fingers. My controller is now residing in the armrest compartment same as Martin's initial idea. I've hidden the 385 kilometers of wires under the carpet/driver's side however
In all, the installation takes aprox 20-30min. From sliding out your OEM windows to closing the lid of the armrest compartment! Way too easy and extremely unchallenging (i.e. boring)
The rest really is to snake the little WD cable around the hoop. Copy what I did (see pics below) or if you are braver than me, pull off the trim and tidy everything inside of it. The reason I chosen this method is because it will be easy to remove for cleaning. I don't want to bother removing the trim each time - I'm suspecting brittle clips under there!
On a side note, I couldn't push back my Boxster inside its storage shed so I had no choice but to start it up. Guess what, went for a 2hrs topless drive (warm and bright sunshine here today). Just came back all fixed lollll haven't driven this car for almost 1.5months. What a blast each time
J - CN4, HK1, Canada3 & UK2 cleared only atm
USA SkyBreakerians - Any concerns by PM pleeze (will send an update privately in 48hrs). Keep The Faith loll

Fred,
Sorry to be so pedantic (remember I'm a complete novice)
When you do this:
Splice both brown & bleu ashtray light wires and terminate as you wish
Brown = ground (goes to SkyBreaker black)
Blue = positive (goes to SkyBreaker red)
Does the ashtray light still work after you connect the skybreaker wires? Or does it eliminate the light? Not that it really matters if the light in there is lost, but just wondering.
Plus instead of soldering, I have these wire connectors I use so you don't even have to strip the insulation from the wires and no tape needed.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, I just don't want to short circuit anything
Thank You
They look great, I also noticed from the close up pics you secured the mesh on with a black cable tie. Is one enough?
oooo just noticed too you probably are aware already, with the top up the PORSCHE lettering on the window doesn't centre with the skybreaker PORSCHE lettering. Or maybe it's just the angle the pic was taken
Just saying
Cheers
Ash tray light still works, soldering would be best but connectors will work remember it's very small wire, hard to crimp connectors too.
I will take a picture of it today for you. I had my 8 year old daughter help me hold each wire as I soldiered them
Just got this message at 8.00 AM - USPS package Inbound Out of Customs 01/26/2015 4:30am. Your item cleared United States Customs at 4:30 am on January 26, 2015.
Excited!!
AS of 630 PST, still stuck in customs in LA. Been sitting there for 5 days now. It took 1 day to get from China to LA, but the efficiency of the the US customs strikes again. Between those jokers and the IRS, well I won't go any further I'm sure NSA is watching.
Thanks to everyone who are posting their installations...any other ideas are welcome and I'll be deciding what method suits my limited electrical skills
Tracking shows that my deflector arrived in town over the weekend and should be out for delivery today. Can't wait!
Note to self...remove watches/rings before handling and mild detergent, warm water, clean microfiber when cleaning.
I bet some will come up with pretty fancy set-up - let's see! The easiest = ashtray. I'm also keeping my eyes open for that dual-intensity brake circuit activated thingy. For the red kit I think it would be a nice feature. The other colors aren't much of a 'safety' concern imo, can be turned on anytime/anywhere.
As far as set-up(s) goes, it's all at its infantry atm. Plenty you can do with it
Maintenance is required on this kit. Buy yourself a plastic polishing kit that you can use for headlights, tail lights, and your illuminated WD. One kit fits all (e.g. NOVUS)
And remember, a kit like that is only meant to be effective after you have cleaned & detailed/wax your roadster. Meant to accentuate the topless drive really, stylish!. I leave mine turned off when the roof is up, but turn it ON when the car is spanking clean and roof is down only. Fancy accessories really... looking good is all it does loll
The etch also looks killer in day time. Top quality soft white, frosty, high res, etc. I think you'll all love that effect as well
Exterminate the WD Stickers lolll
Cheap air mail shipping, manual customs clearance, etc etc.... can't be fast mate! When you ask they tell you eta 10-15days (contract promise). And when you complain, they tell you 10-15 "open business days sir" LOL
Its all random really... unreliable timing, etc, but the good part is; it always gets there!
Express shipping however is lighting fast 95% of the time (EMS). At least these guys have clearance broker services at ports of entry. That's embedded in your shipping (fast track). Much faster but sadly twice the price. But hey... 7 days and it's in your hands anywhere in the states (Colorado mountains, bad weather, whatever... "it works")
So much I can help from my end, helpless on that sorry. Fingers crossed guys
It's all depending on your wallet really. Sure does all the same thing. PlastX is not necessarily the cheapest of all :/ But yea it works.
I got a NOVUS kit hand carried into China at the end of Dec by a friend and in all honesty, I will never use anything else. The thing is magic. Gets rid of those micro scratches in a wipe or two.
Chemicals LOL
They are not too bad, I take the two outer trim pieces off whenever I install my B-K roll bar extension. I was afraid they were all going to break so I ordered some replacements, it is part # 98658075100, #9 on this diagram:
Wind Deflector And Linings Roll-over Bar
When you pry off the rollbar trim, sometimes the clip stays in the hole, or sometimes it stays on the threaded post on the backside of the rollbar trim, and you can thread it off. When you put the trim back on you can put the clip in the hole on the roll bar, line up the threaded posts, and then push it in. I would use the palm of my hand and do a little strike and it would pop in.
Turned out that I did not need to use any of my new clips, although I did use one or two since I had them. So if anyone does want to try and mount the wire behind there, don't be afraid to take that roll bar trim off.
Thank you Canada Post! Arrived safe and sound today. Looks fantastic Nine! Hey - question - maybe this has been answered but don't see it - what is the gold Porsche crest and allen wrench for? Don't see where those would be used off hand. Help!
Wrench is for the two little M3 hex screws that secure those 2 CNC blades (black thingies sandwiched onto the WD). Those will unscrew/screw with a 2mm wrench (
metric
).
Edit: did mentioned M3, as in very small! Aluminum threads careful
no Big thumb torque req
loll. Just sit the screw and add 1/4 turn (1/2 turn max). That's it or you'll strip out the threads hehehe
Once I find those Ultraviolet LED strips, believe me you'll want to shoot me $8 to cover shipping for one of these. That mini wrench will come handy if you switch leds!
Had friends over yesterday helping me out with some other production. I am "2.5 weeks late"
in everything
and finally admitting I need some help loll Thank god for good friends (i.e. the type that shows up when you are in trouble)
Going offline until this coming Sunday. I'll be dead quiet but won't be far
Andy took this shot out of his mobby cam y'day eve... just got it FW to me. Horrible quality but I like it. Let's see some of yours when you have the kit installed!
My boxster car has its Winter Mood colors turned ON atm! Heard you guys on the east coast are being hit bad weather-wise. Keep safe there all
It's 41*F here, so just lowering the (plastic window) top was a bit scary. I haven't hooked up the wiring yet; more comfortable working conditions will be conducive to creativity.
Fred, the product oozes quality and looks fantastic in person, and yes, it's going to be a bit of a bear to photograph. Give me a little time and warmer temps, and I'll see what I can do. I did take a couple unboxing and assembly pics, but not very many. Thanks again; your work is amazing.
Don't you want that flipped around so it can be read correctly from the rear of the car? At least that is the way Fred photographed it in his posts. Just wondering
I think kjc has installed it exactly right. Congrats, it looks great!
Mine is sitting here still in the shipping package...Excellent wrapping job Fred, thanks for taking such care!
Can't wait to get her out of storage so I can start my installation.
Get the Novus 1 2 3 kit if you have the plastic window. I swear after the first time I used all three the plastic window was more flexible (as if it had absorbed some chemicals) and wasn't as brittle as it had been. Use the polish about every other car washing and it stays nice and clear. Only difficulty is getting your hand and the rag all over the inside of the window really requires some contortions.
Mike, thanks for commenting. I do have the Novus kit but you're right - getting at the inside of the window is a job for an 85 lb Russian gymnast. I need to do a better job on the inside surfaces, as I tend to ignore them in favor of the "easy" side, and it shows. I'll try to get at it this spring.
You got some wicked vision/brain activity going on there my man. People like you are hired by intel & law enforcement agencies. Just saying
You got fooled by the position of the M3 screws. I've assembled Kevin's kit the other way around.... screws should face the car interior. Not that it matters but should be that way (a new rule lol). Easy flip around... keep for when you want to chg the LED for the other color (if you ever have too)
Kevin, stunning shot thanks man. High tech looking stuff... so far I think your WD is the best looking wind deflector in-the-world
My bad, it must be all the sunshine in California affecting my brain
Got my kit Fred thanks, will install next week after my return from my trip on the PCH (had to rub that in). There are a lot of things to hate about California but there are definitely a lot of things to LOVE in California.
Know what you mean about the LOVE! Brother in law is located in Santa Barbara Ynez side (event management$). We used to visit yearly, spending holidays but not too often anymore. The depression you get leaving this area to come back to Shanghai is (in one word) "brutal". Takes you about 3 months to recover mentally :/
Beside having to cut through smog to find my office door every morning, I also get to live up California daily with small imports
For what it's worth, I put the switch/brightness control module in the storage cubby in my dash. I usually only use it for my phone or red clip, so there's still plenty of room. The unit is attached with a 3M Command Strip.
^ Niceee, I like. Thanks for sharing Martin!
Some of the latest development worth sharing with you guys:
Spoke to my pmma supplier this morning about maintenance, polishing techniques, recommended creams etc. I've also mentioned that some of my customers, who are new to pmma acrylic, aren't necessarily "pro" polishers. Also added that some of us couldn't afford developing polishing technique onto a LIVE part - how to fix that problem, this and that.... just catching up really.
Long story short, he introduced me to a company that specialized in composite hardening. Needless to add that I've called on them immediately after hanging up with him. Surprisingly, these guys specialize in clear acrylic & polycarbonate coatings for automotive parts and they have kindly accepted to take my account. I've already put two WD SkyBreakers in the express mail this afternoon for them to built a fixture for us (it's a dipping process, lamination is old school apparently). They'll do this over the coming week for us so I will have those back by latest this coming weekend.
They quoted us $18 for the coating process for 1 (one) SkyBreaker panel - regardless of the quantity (NOT cheap). How it works: I send them the pre-etched WDs, they coat them, send them back to me and I laser cut the profile of the Boxster WD shape as the final process. Sounds complicated but it's not.
The coating is extremely hard. You can rub your stainless steel watch on it and it just won't scratch at all, no more micro scratches, etc, nada - according to them (they mentioned crystal based coating something, I lost half of it).
EXCELLENT but here is the catch;
if you ever damage your WD (e.g. heavy object falling onto it, making a nasty mark/scratch), it will not be possible to repair using NOVUS or PlastX lol. Forget about #600 grit abrasive paper also... the coating is so hard any repair method simply won't work. Meaning, when coated, it's final - sealed for life.
So here is the deal:
Those who already have supported and purchased a SkyBreaker from me will be given the option to receive a FREE "coated" replacement WD having the same etch as per original order. However, not entirely free loll I will be charging you $20 shipping on the export (PMMA, etch job and hard coating on me).
Others who are waiting for a kit will be given the two following options:
Option 1:
Kit with plain acrylic = $155 (requires maintenance, easy repair/polishing)
Option 2:
Kit with plain acrylic + hard coating = $175 (no maintenance required, no crazing, chemical friendly, etc! but very hard to repair if not impossible)
Let me know what you guys think, what suits you best, any recommendation, etc
Help me to make this SkyBreaker Wind Deflector product the
Best-in-the-World
(in its real meaning this time)
Hi Fred...I would definitely be interested in the new version WD with the coating. Still winter here for a while so I won't be doing my install any time soon.
Would you like a PM as confirmation? Thank you for additional research and kind offer to the early purchasers...first class as usual!
I decided to cut an oblong hole in the bottom of the frame for the wire:
Lining up the Nine8Six Skybreaker with the frame:
I milled a small channel in the bottom to accommodate the wire:
This is how the wire looks when installed; it of course can be pushed further into the seam between the roll bar pads:
I just used a rechargeable drill and a couple of different size drill bits. Let me know if you have any questions.
Just finished my install. Very nice DIY. I used the ashtray light which was very easy to access
First run the wires completely before tying them down. There is no right or wrong way
Then solder the wires, black goes to brown (-, ground, or earth for those in Europe)
I chose to pop a hole in my center console box. I didn't know ho wretched this picture was until I downloaded it, but there you are
The hole the power cable comes out of will eventually have a phone charger coming out of it, and Fred, I'd like to modify your power box (nice as it is) by relocating the pot resistor from the box to another spot. I'm thinking of mounting the new pot resistor inside the center console box so only a switch similar to the wiper delay switch shows and running wires to the PCB. Is there any reason that would not work?
And here is a picture with the ocean in the background. the weather isn't cooperating, but there is a cruise ship out the windscreen to make up for it.
You won't need to adjust the intensity quite often. Its one of those adjust-and-forget thing. More functional as a Power ON switch... in case you have a blank anywhere, that could go there easy.
Different leds emits different intensity. That was the reasoning behind the brightness controller really (one fits all). Amber might have to be set 50% , cold white at 25%, and red needs to be at 5% (red is the brightest of all). That's all that box does in all honesty. I'd just hide it somewhere - no use!
"So here is the deal:

Count me in Fred, sounds like a very reasonable way to spend $20!
Hi Fred,
I'm still chomping at the bit waiting for that email that says you have stock so I can order and pay for one. I for one will be very happy to get the
Option 2
kit with hard coating. Any idea yet on a possible time frame for the next batch? Not pushing mate just impatient little ol me lol. Thanks Fred
Just wanted to add Fred, I reckon and have a feeling, I'll possibly have the first 986 in Melbourne with your SkyBreaker installed. Good advertising, I bet I get heaps of inquiries about it, and I'll direct them all to your website
[Image-only or quote-only post; no author-written text.]

After one days driving I beg to differ. This is a toy within a toy and needs to be continuously adjusted. Full intensity for top down city driving at dusk, medium intensity after that, lowest intensity with the top up, and off for night time top up long distance driving. At least that's me, other's mileage may differ.
Just recalled you've got the cold white. Yea these are pretty sexy and can be cranked a bit without being seen from space. The RED however needs to be left at 5% at all time I'm afraid.
LOL you remind me of my mate here who drives a 987. We've airbrushed his deflector with PORSCHE using phosphorescent pigments (0 volt!). He told me "
man every time I see a SUV, a van or a truck in my rear mirror I just pull in front of him so that his headlights can recharge the pigments for 10-20secs
"
At first I went 'hahaha' and then his GF goes; he is serious, some guy was beeping at us yesterday because we were blocking his way LOL
All good fun!
SkyGlow:
Here some one+ month old R&D lollll Looks okay, nothing like the SkyBreaker tho... no edge lighting :/ Takes about 10secs to charge up but discharge within 20-30min
Just started playing with my new windscreen and a 9V battery. It is very, very cool! I may swap out the white LED for blue before I install it. Unfortunately, I am waiting for it to get warmer and my hardtop to come off before I wire it up. I also need to find another plastic frame for the plexiglass, mine is starting to break.
As always, exquisite work by Fred.
The photo doesn't do it justice, and it still has contact paper on the back:
aha - not too much time Jay, quite the opposite. This came to mind when I was being harassed by my mate here, asking for his SkyBreaker, every day almost. Didn't had much time to prototype the 987 kit, etc etc. Told him: just drop by and I'll give you a temp solution. We'll do his 987 SkyBreaker kit later this spring
lol Firefly Boxster!!! I'll start with my bike and see how it goes (wish I'd be serious)
@JonD:
I had the same problem. But it was a matter of the right pulling force. I pulled quite hard at both upper ends of the frame and one end moved a bit. From that it was possible to go on all around the window.
Herbert
Herbert since you saw what I wrote before. There's actually a VERY simple no force way to remove the Perspex, In fact NO effort at all.
Get a flat screw driver one that fits between the Perspex and the frame (there's a tiny gap at the TOP of the frame). Lever it a little and gently pulling towards the frame the Perspex tab just pops out away from the frame then it just comes out.
Really simple and no effort actually
Thanks Fred glad I could contribute something at least. The pic is someone else's (Fintro) can't take credit for that, I just added the down arrow and the writing
I think some people may be able to pull the frame away easily, unfortunately mine was stuck like it was glued in, I nearly gave up trying and was going to see if I could buy another frame, as a last resort I tried the screw driver and was amazed how easily it popped out
So I thought I'd share in case someone else experiences the same problem as I did.
Cheers
Who was it that said "Give me a long enough lever and I will move the Earth"? Hint he was Greek
What do the experts think about using a fuse tap? Ideas on which circuit to use? I want to run the wire to the driver foot well and then locate the switch next to the document holder under the steering wheel.
I ended up tapping into fuse E1 which should be the radio according to my diagram. There is a hole just above the fuse panel that I put a bolt in to use as the ground. I found that tidbit on the forum when someone hard wired their radar detector. I ran the wire under the sill plate. Very impressed with the light itself. Be careful cleaning though. I used a microfiber cloth that actually caused some very slight scratches
I was able to polish them out with some Plastix.
I put the control next to the document holder with some Velcro.
Good job Bruce,
Fred is looking at getting a hardening coat put over the perspex. Not sure how far along he is, But for those that already purchased the skybreaker like you, he is offering another hardened Perspex for around $20 I think plus postage I assume.
Jon - you are rushin', I can feel it all the way from China LOL
Extra Hard Coating Update:
The 3 WDs I've sent to the hardernizer (the new name we gave him!) last weekend have been coated successfully this last Thursday. It takes 72hrs for curing which mean he will only be able to pack those and send back my way this Sunday. I should receive them this Tuesday or Wed latest. Something like that....
Spoke to him yesterday, he told me that they look and are as hard as my bathroom mirror... whatever that means. Can't wait to have them back and throw some 'dusty' microfiber cloths at them. This same company does the Maserati's cluster gauge faces coating so if its good for Maserati, it should be good for the SkyBreaker
They'll have to be the Best in the World x1,000
Jon - to be precise on timing, we are looking at about 2 (two) weeks from today until the day I will be sending those recalled panels to existing customers. The whole process involves me etching and laser cutting the panels and then sending them all to him for coating (takes about a week for both operations). So two weeks total! Goes fast
Other news
is I've already started manufacturing additional kits (ctrl box, the blades, etc). I am doing a few kits, just in case loll Also got the 987 friends of friends crowd running after me at the moment. Word of mouth is nasty loll
Never in a million years I would have expect this to go viral. I am petrified to list those on eBay or elsewhere... I'll possibly end up doing those for the rest of 2015
I'll update as soon as I have anything new from my end. And before you mention Jon, I know your summer is on its way out, I'll hurry promise
Supa Cool Bruce! Thanks for sharing a nite pix mate
It's actually the first time I see the blue one... love it. Also like your under dash installation, clever
Can't wait to see Herbert's "amber" kit. That should be quite cool as well
Thanks Martin! Thank you for your pictures, they were very helpful
No problem Fred, the pictures don't do your work justice! The etching looks fantastic without the light on and then.....you turn the LED's on and....
Very nice mod! And yes, my micro fiber cloth must have had some dust in it
I hope you guys have a great weekend
They are indeed out of stock, sorry about that mate.
Best is to register on that gtp site and click that link above the social icons (get notified when stock are available link). You'll get an instant email notification as soon as those comes back to life. Also helps me out to figure how many I have to make
I'm speeding up no worries. They are being manufactured as I type so it shouldn't be too long. Aiming to make them avail this month
hi Fred,
I promise you definitely not trying to rush you, I was purely informing Bruce about your intentions. I myself don't always read every post so maybe others don't either and I thought maybe Bruce was not aware you were looking at hardening the Perspex by making mention of the scratches. I do sincerely apologise Fred if I gave the impression I was rushing you.
Summer here isn' t that great at the moment I usually only drive the car on extremely nice days, never in the rain unless it's absolutely necessary, and very rarely at night.
Have a great weekend everyone. I'll just shut up now.
Wow! These deflectors are amazing!
Sorry - first time poster so quick introduction - I found this site when I was looking to buy a Boxster back in June, I bought one in July and have been loving the car since (2003 Boxster S with 45,000 miles, in silver with navy roof and navy interior).
I found this thread while looking for options for light upgrades - what a find! I REALLY want one!
I've registered on the GT series site and am looking forward to hearing that these are back in touch - once they're available how do I let you know what design and colour combo I want?
Has anyone with the same colour combo as mine had one and how does it look? I'm torn between blue and red.
Thanks, and looking forward to getting more into this site
Cheers
Adam
Quick follow-up
SUCCESS!
Received the 3 samples from the 'hardernizer' last Thursday morning and they are simply awesome. The stuff works.... hard and it does the job! No matter what you throw at it, the WD remains crystal clear
No more silly polishing required. Also cleaned one with acetone and it didn't craze at all. Normally it take about 1 min and you see the PMMA fogging (acetone is harsh). This stuff is working to perfection.
$15 per coating/WD is the latest quote I received. Not the cheapest but there you go... it works and that's all what matters.
Feeling like a complete idiot lol I should have never assumed that everybody was a professional acrylic polisher - and should have look at this option before releasing the kit. My mistake. Good news is everyone who got the first gen will received a replacement WD window free of charge shortly (product recall lol)
I will be sending a whole lot of WD this coming weekend for hard coating and hoping to have them back before the end of this month. Unfortunately, Chinese New year is kicking in a week from now and that slows things down at the supplier's end. We'll get it done no worries.
I am happy to say with confidence that the SkyBreaker is now a high quality item! I'm tapping myself on the shoulder as I type this lol
ps. was told by the supplier that the coating on our SkyBreaker is the same as the coating used by pretty much all automakers (the chemical is made by Mitsubishi, there some trade secret for you). Used for automotive headlight lenses and other clear composites with irregular surfaces (gauges, face plates, tail lights, indicators, WD, etc).
Learning everyday!
For those of you reading this & on the fence, get off. This is a really fun little update & the quality is excellent - even before the new coating. If Fred is willing to sell more, my advice is to get on the list. I'm definitely looking forward to coming out of hibernation with this update. Thanks Fred.
Whataguy this Fred!! It's fellow Porsche lovers/forum members/humans like you that make me feel proud to be a 986 owner and part of a community like this. I also love my Boxster all the much more. Thanks!
Without question. This mod is about a 1.5 out of 10 for difficulty of installation and is a 10 of 10 for overall improvement in what it replaces. It really sets the car off.
So, I have read it a few times, but just to be sure: As a 'best-in-the-world Gen 1 WD' owner I don't have to do anything other than sit patiently and wait for an even better one to arrive?
I want to send more money.
I guess instead, I need to hurry up and order my Fred-lights before the end of the month....
My car will be in storage for a few more weeks but I'm planning ahead for my WD install.
After some googling I found a Rennlist thread showing a switched power supply that is easy to get at via the removable side panel of the console near the shifter. It is an unused open plug (possibly for phone charger?).
Curious if anyone has used this and whether it is switched from accessory position on the ignition or engine running. Seems like an easy way to power up the WD.
Thanks for any input/comments
Whoa, you got a silver boxster car... amber lighting and silver paint got to be the best combo, can't wait to see this with a canon. Let's have a look!
Thx Hebert
edit. Is it just the camera or the WD amber temp is the exact same as the Porsche amber lighting? from the radio it looks as it is. Got to find time and try that kit on my boxster here
It's a bit of both. On the picture it is much more "white-ish" than in reality, but it didn't match 100%. I took the picture with my phone and I really have to play a bit with manual exposure and white balance to match reality. A camera sensor is something very different from our retina. Sensors react to many color components our eyes cannot see like e.g. infrared. On the other hand dynamic range is very very poor compared to our eye. Will be back from Paris on wednesday night this week and hopefully weather will allow some better pictures before end of week.
Nevertheless it's gorgeous
Herbert
I finally got around to wiring mine in.
At first I was just going to do the splice, but after getting a good look at my center console, I decided that I'm going to completely
refinish it
(another day). That being the case I decided to add a plug for the connector so that it is easy to pull when I do the console.
I plan to fit the control knob to one of the unused oval switch positions (heated seat switch - not installed in mine) behind the ashtray. Has anyone done this yet?
Mine is Amber and I eagerly await my Amber Bi-Xenons.
Embrace the Amber:
Cut, then extend the wire:
Splice and add plug:
Add plug to WD harness:
Plug it in:
Actually it was installed. We got so busy with the parts car, that I forgot to show it off.
Sunday, I did one more update to the WD install. A false bottom for the console storage compartment to cover the switch and wires:
Cut out from a piece of scrap plastic
Place in the tray over the wires and switch:
Done:
Looking forward to placing an order for the new tough version. Added it to my wish list on the Gtprojectors website
I think the page is down at the moment though.
Jeez, I've been away from the forum for 6 months and when I come back more interesting ideas have been put into production.
Very cool Fred.
I had started a thread in 2012 on edge lighting ideas but there did not seem to be much interest.
http://986forum.com/forums/diy-project-guides/37335-diy-led-light-accents.html#post305655
Perhaps DIY vs Get it done for you was the missing ingredient.
I like the edge lit crest but having other options is great.
I wonder what happened to the clear engine cover and lighting idea? You could have your own Flux Capacitor light show in your engine compartment.
Me too - I'm checking on here daily to see if there's any update! Though I was one of the many that swamped Fred with a headlight order in his last run, so I take some responsibility for the delay.
I still can't decide on which colour backlihght to go with - I have silver with a blue hood - has anyone tried the blue backlight with this combo? Or red backlight? Would love to see pics if so.
Thanks
Rox, BoxterPHD, Joseph,
all
, thanks for the support. Well received guys. I've seen your reg on that GTP site so I'm keeping you guys priority on everything!
Quick Update:
I am happy to say that I have finally received 100 (one hundred!) "professionally" coated panels for the manufacturing of the Boxster Illuminated wind deflector. High Quality Stuff! So so (sooooo) happy about that. Received them last Wed. 2 month wait but worth it believe me, they-are-killer.
(Its hard to rush a guy/manufacturer who enforce a MOQ of 10,000pcs/month lollll I'm so bloody grateful he did those for us - making new friends here!)
So finally we have something to play with. From those 100, there are 20'ish reserved to previous SkyBreaker owners (prod recall) so that leaves us with little over 80 kits. Hopefully this time we should have enough for everyone.
I also received 100 PWM controllers/boards so no more excuses, those SkyBreaker kits are going in prod as soon as next week! Good mate Andy is as involved as I am in the making of the SkyBreaker so it should go pretty quick assembly & packaging wise
I'll update on the progress, pics, etc!
I've got one of these from the first run and it ROCKS! Use it every day - Got the white light and run it at min in the dark so it just lights up on the freeway on the way to work so the oversized pickups see me at 80 mph. Turned all the way up I can read by it.
Totally agree! Really happy with first version & excited to get the upgraded version. Really nice update to the 986 - recommend highly to those considering it. Thanks Fred!
I'm with the others, I think your product is awesome!!! Will it fit the 987.1 Boxster? I own a 2005 model. Many thanks and best of luck with your ingenious project
^^^^^^^^^^
I am taking notes of your request guys, writing names down at this end also
hate priority list but got to be done lol
You will yes. that ecom platform sends out an automated email when stocks gets updated from the backend. Happens instantly. Regardless I'll be sending you guys a separate note a few days before just so you don't get surprised. Will post here also no worries
Can't wait to start working on these I'll be honest. Believe it or not, I want one too... mine literally got 'stolen' from a friend here :/ At least he gave me his near new condition bracket but with an old and scratched up oem window loll Life's harsh sometime....
Starting on these next week actually!
Genuine link e.g no-no browser highjack virus'esess and all. Click below with confidence mate and that should bring up the page. Once there, you'll see a link just above the social icons (facebook twitter ico thingies) where it reads "Sign up to get notified when this product is back in stock".
If you have any trouble finding it let me know
Illuminated Wind Deflector Kit for Boxster 986 - English
Wow! I've been away for a week after checking for updates every day, and come back to this great news! Really looking forward to getting mine.
Bruce H - do you have any pics of yours fitted?
Thanks
Adam
You are welcome and thanks
The ipad install is actually pretty easy. I bought a used mini to keep the cost down and then picked up a used horseshoe from Oklahoma Foreign. My plan was to practice on it but it was in excellent condition and I didn't make any mistakes. So now I have the original if I or a future owner ever wants to go back to stock. I still love it though! I cant believe the capability it provides. I am thinking of putting one in my truck but I don't think that one will be as easy.
Bruce,
Geezer here and just starting to redo the interior of my 2001. I signed up for the email notification but was wondering about the rough timing of availability. It's an amazing mod and I gotta have it. I'm retired and play a lot of golf but will give up a day of golf to install this baby, that's how excited I am to get this. Just need to plan to have it in place when topless driving starts in earnest.
Thanks, Larry
You will have to PM Fred (Nine8Six), I don't know where he is at with new orders. Once I ordered it came pretty quick and it is a pretty easy install. Well worth it
Or go here:
http://www.gtprojectors.com/illuminated-wind-deflector-for-boxster-986.html
Pressure pressure pressure! Well the good news is those blades are done already. Last count Andy and I did on them was 180 (e.g. two per kit, meaning we have enough for 90 kits already machined). And I bet we'll never need 90 lolllll we'll see
Coming week is off to the PWM box machining and assembly! And LED strips assembly is goes fast.
May 2015
, those SkyBreaker goes wild and in the express mail to you guys. Promise!
Sort of.
Stupid answer sorry.... I'm just a little upset that I've planned on making so many and, from the look of it, we'll run-out again.
Out of 100 professionally coated panels, we have so far:
-
17 reserved for existing Skybreaker owners
(those who got the kit back in Jan, prod recall)
-
67 registrations on the GTP site
(fella members waiting list). Those are also reserved.
That is something like
84 kits
gone right there. Just hope that from those 67 registered fellas a few will change their mind lollll If so then I think we might have something like 20-25 kits left over to play with. Crazy stuff :/
I am seriously thinking about taking my good mate Andy's advise here and manufacturing a few hundreds of those. Andy wants to crack on with 250 units (additional to those 100) and sell them using ecommerce platform like eBay and Amazon. He has been bugging me for this since 2 (two) full months now :/
Andy's vision: "The SkyBreaker should be standard equipment for the Boxster 986" lolllll I am starting to think that he was right all that time. It is a nice little kit after all... light, cheap, way too easy to install, looks good!
We'll see.... tempting. Let's start with what I owe you fellas first. Andy next LOLLL
That Andy is a smart fella. The SkyBreaker is an amazing accessory that all Boxsters should have. Looks beauty on my ride. You could even expand and do ones for the 987's and 981's and really go to town!
oh no nonono.... this can't be seriously happening..... not your dubbysteppy thing again :/
You give the guy a set of bright & shinny VIP passes for this year's 2015 Shanghai Auto Show and look what he does.... reveals one (out of our many other) theme song. Mm mm mm mad...ness
You WIN man, I'll make those 200'ish kits for you (June). There, its official.
Now that Wallace IS inspirational. Speed yellow car with amber deflector. You are so ON mate, can't wait to see this
thx!
Ok,
New top with glass installed this week. Leather installed on a cpl of spots that had lost the cheap plastic wood grain in the interior. Passenger seat in garage awaiting renewal with leather reconditioning kit from leatherworldtech.com. Next, the driver seat and some spots on the doors for reconditioning. So when I finish this work, and shampooing carpet, what better way to make it look whole than the sky breaker. Signed up for the email alert on the website and can't wait. I love the DIY section of this site. I'll try to post before and after pics of the seats when I finish.
By the way, mine is 2001 arctic silver with 92k miles, base model. I'm a 64 yr old retired geezer with a new hobby!!!!!!
Tony - you are harassing me loll they'll be ONLINE and ready for grab in exactly
15 days
!!! I'm assembling them atm
But since you've been asking me since MkI I'm happy to send you a kit before anyone else. I kept 5 spare PWM kits from the MKI batch just in case some failed (none did fortunately!). So.... one of those spare kit, with the newly coated window and you should be set for a few summers mate.
I'll do an exception for you and ship one out this coming week if you want. Let me know what design you want and I'll laser this for you bro
Done deal. I'll get that shipped to you this coming Monday or latest Tuesday. Pay later mate, gives me a chance to harass you too lollll
Same price Tony $155. I think I get those out cheaper for those who've purchased a projector kit from either me or Pelican (20% off). Got to be grateful sometimes
Uh-oh! Ok, I'll send a quick note to you guys on the list (by email) a few days before it goes live just to make sure others don't snap your kits loll Advanced notice type thing
Hi Fred , Lee from Melville NY. I bought a headlight kit and Porsche wheel covers from you last year. Wondering if am I still on your list? I love your products ! Lee
Both lists mate
The good friend list and the who-purchased-projectors list. And I love your guards red with red projectors & center caps... I never get fed-up to see the pics in my folder here from time to time
haha why do I get the feeling that summer finally kicked in where you are and that the topless thing is biting
Man... weather have been good only since a few weeks here.
Next weekend
I think I taking the Boxster car out for a spring cleanup & detailing, roof down ride etc etc. Also hope to take a few pics of my car. I actually want to see how the amber looks like on the guards red. Will also post pics here and ask for opinions.
Next weekend, next weekend.... when did I heard that before loll No rush Kevin, totally understand mate
Hi...
Am I on the list? I believe I added myself via the GT Projectors website the other day.
Also, is it possible to get something custom etched as the design - thinking Boston Red Sox themed (the two red socks emblem)....
Haven't sent out a note yet. If you are registered on that gtp site then no worries mate, you will receive soon enough (nx week!)
RE your question, you certainly can! Not sure I am using the correct version tho. Feel free to customize. RS logo from
Boston Red Sox Logo - Download 647 Logos (Page 1)
Quick preview in B&W (one color), I bet it looks a tad better backlit with let's say the red LED loll
Go Go custom, sure can do
That looks awesome... Was not sure how it would look with the words (it would be backwards from the front) so was thinking the red sox logo like this would be better. Can you post what that would look like?
That doesn't look half bad. Where do we ship this Tony. Sent you an email, quit ignoring me loll May have sent this to the wrong Tony also loll GTP site reg from last Feb. Man that'd be funny
Packed ready for a hell of a trip around the world
Right, and sure. Two potential problems however
1. your rear vision will be reduced greatly with something as solid as per visual. The official logo would possibly be better rear vision-wise e.g smaller/narrower features.. still can see through
2. you want to make dead sure that "everyone" following you is a huge fan of the Boston RS mate
Do not travel out of the city
Edit: I actually kind a like it lolllll
Sweet - that looks AWESOME !!!
Will need to think about the rear vision part though, a good point... Would it be an issue only when the LEDs were on or even when they were off (and during the day) because of the etching?
Etching is indeed solid. Back to you mate. Let us know when you'll had a good look at your rear view mirror and made up your decision.
ps. side mirrors and dead angle (over shoulder) rules for me... rear view mirror is optional for me.... but that is just me. I have the Porsche/crest and it doesn't bother a single bit (in bright red loll). Can't confirm/comment on the solid visuals tho - at your own risk!
I'm around mate, tc (go go Red Sox!)
Think "outlines". That's what I'd go for personally
Some options for you to think of.
Off walking the dogs... passed midnight (their time!), got two huge heads here looking at me like its the end of the world
Tc!
Sitting out by the lake the other evening in the car, I had the windscreen illuminated. A couple of bubbas came walking by several times. They finally came up and asked what it was, they had never seen anything like it. Complimented the look and said it was very cool
Again, fantastic job Fred
I'll be honest, I also like the white etch look during day time also. So class, looks sharp man. Reminds me when we had 'stickers'. Was also sort of okay but nothing like this
Pumped up my slow leak front tire with my bicycle pump and took the Boxster car for a ride today. No roof down however.... car is filthy and all but don't care was so nice to drive it. I'll take pics when I gave it a good wash (embarrassing... nearly 2 months parked in the dusty shed)
Oh and finally got my amber SkyBreaker on! Not sure, sure does looks amazing but something tells me the red is better. I'll need you guy's opinion as some stage next week on that (please lol)
Let me figure out how to outline that RS logo and I'll post back something far more better looking that above (apologies btw, was a quick photoshop)
Actually, it was at dusk and I had the LED's on, so they were impressed with the blue illumination. When it is still light out, and the LED's are on, it really looks good
Oh I know Bruce, was following no worries. RE looking good, its actually pretty wicked when those LED are turned on. Also Blue-on-Blue must be quite something. Haven't seen it in person I'll be honest but judging from your pics I bet that colour combo is a headturner.
Just took that chance to brag about the white etching during day time. Not many are impressed by that... dunno why LOLL
I think that also brings out the Porsche owner pride thingny pretty well (less the finger prints and dust, sorry)
Ok, I wasnt sure
I do love the etching on its own as well, 1000 times better than the sticker. Definitely first class! I wish I could get to Shanghai but this is the last month for the 777 from DFW. Next month they are putting the 787 on that route
2016 we are pushing for Austin,TX for May (motogp) and was thinking of going - I haven't seen the Austin circuit yet. Might well see you sooner than you think Captain
Glad to hear you are not having this jetlagged route anymore, can't be an easy job but still fun I guess
Hey Fred,
Counting down the hours. Still on target? Got a small road trip planned for the first week in June and it would sure be sweet to be sporting the new wind screen. See what being a super star gets you. Your adoring fans want more, more more!!!!
Larry
Still on target - goes LIVE on
15th
, this month, this year, this world loll
Already have all of the LED strips pre-fabricated in all of the 5 colors (about 300x strips/micro connectors) and have so far 58 PWM controllers ready in hands (doing another 20 tonight). Blades are done (200x kits total). Nasty....
Got 98 coated panels already cut to Boxster specs/size. However, they
aren't etched
. Keeping the fruity PMMA fumes for last (smells like crack cocaine... how lucky eh)
Fans lolllllll Below pic is the kinda fans I need
Nah, assuming I have plenty for everyone this time. Did sent an email separately to those who've I owe a replacement (coated) window however.
Ready for grab on that GTP site
!!! Those registered already should have received a system message by now
ps. If those 100'ish kits vanishes all at the same time I swear I quit this forum lolll Really hope we have enough for everybody this time. At least enough for those that signed up... which is less than 80 ppl. Fingers crossed
pps. Same price! The super duper coating is on me :/ Not going to charge extra for what should have been included at the first place. Sincere apologies for having make a few of you fellas wait for this kit.
I wanted to make sure I got one so I just ordered on the GTP site. I was not entirely sure what to put in for the custom logo - I used a red sox socks eps file but you mentioned about maybe doing an outline. Just let me know what you need from me... I submitted by order - my paypal / email matches my user name on this forum...
That's the best I can do on the "outline" work. That's ready for the laser! Much better than solid... with a good
red
backlit effect on that, that will get you a few "Go Go Red Sox" coming your way I'm sure
Let me know if you need any revision on that, I'm cool with that. If you are good to go chose option "Custom work" from the dropdown. We'll keep in touch!
Would that work you think?
So the parts in the image in black would be etched and appear with the red backlight whereas the solid white parts would be clear (like a previous version you showed me). If so then I love it and think it's going to look unique and AWESOME!!! My order is already in (I did Custom but also had to pick one of the options above - I want it to look like your image here please....
Still on target - goes LIVE on

Order Placed and PayPaled thanks for all your hard work and diligence Fred you're a star mate.
Can't wait for the Postie now LOL
My god...
10am Sat morning here. Woke up 20min ago and was petrified to open the inbox. Did it anyway and found 31 kits gone :/
Coffee taste weird suddenly lollll looks Like I am going to be busy this weekend and possibly all of this coming week
Thanks guy, you guys a cool bunch. Feeling like I haven't wasted my time doing those miniature strips for the whole all of last week's evenings (had to do about 300 of those).
Really, REALLY, cool. Thx again x1,000,000
Awesome job. I just ordered my Mk2 upgrade.
I had missed a few emails from my headlight order because of the spam filter settings I had.
Glad I sorted that out and got the notification.
Note to others: Make sure "" is on your safe list.
Is it already Friday? that's what the wife just yelled at me with a weird face drawn up :/
I'm out of my black hole (wonderful place btw) and about done with wet polishing the top edge of your *&^)_*^%% wind deflectors loll
06:38am, haven't gone to bed yet. No s**tin
I'll update when mentally capable over the weekend. Looking good!!!
I think mine went to spam too. Please let me know if I can still buy a hard as diamond replacement.
Oh, if you come to COTA in 2016, please let me know. I'd love to say hello and buy a margarita for you.
Fred,
Don't want to be a nuisance but I placed my order on the gt projector website on 5/15 and the status still shows "processing". It's ok if it really is still processing but I was getting a little concerned after 10 days that the windscreen hadn't shipped. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm amped to get my hands on your little beauty.
Thanks, Larry
Hi, I would like to order one of these, but I just have one question: is everything that's needed to install this in the kit, or do I need to already have the Porsche wind deflector in place to make this work? Thanks!
Fred's essentially a one man show and works huge hours. Processing means you are in the queue. I waited a long time for the headlights because Fred was slammed, and it was worth it. I also have the wind deflector and it is also worth the wait.
Thx J, mate
I'm pulling those out this week and aiming at the mail this coming weekend. 52 kits total :/ and I've had two more this weekend which hopefully should go in this lot as well.
Spent the entire evening of Sunday and yesterday at the vet with J.J on drips/vitamins (my smaller Rottweiler). Poisoned by Insecticides sprayed in the villa I live in on Friday morning (we took the walk on Friday evening). No warning/notice from the management office on the application of those (welcome to my China all).
Has constant 105F fever (72hrs), 2y/old with creatine level up to 1.3mg... very likely a kidney failure or serious complications if he ever makes it out of this toxin
Any Vets on this forum, please get in touch
(I pay cash/PayPal). I am loosing it here. I have many questions that my 'locally trained' vet here can't answer. E.g. atropine treatment
Sorry to hear about J.J.
You have probably already scoured the internet and available info, but here is some good info on organophosphate poisining from the Merck Vetrinary Manual:
Organophosphates (Toxicity): Insecticide and Acaricide (Organic) Toxicity: Merck Veterinary Manual
Treatment is at the end of the article:
"Three categories of drugs are used to treat OP poisoning: 1) muscarinic receptor–blocking agents, 2) cholinesterase reactivators, and 3) emetics, cathartics, and adsorbents to decrease further absorption. Atropine sulfate blocks the central and peripheral muscarinic receptor–associated effects of OPs; it is administered to effect in dogs and cats, usually at a dosage of 0.2–2 mg/kg (cats at the lower end of the range), every 3–6 hr or as often as clinical signs indicate. For horses and pigs, the dosage is 0.1–0.2 mg/kg, IV, repeated every 10 min as needed; for cattle and sheep, the dosage is 0.6–1 mg/kg, one-third given IV, the remainder IM or SC, and repeated as needed. Atropinization is adequate when the pupils are dilated, salivation ceases, and the animal appears more alert. Animals initially respond well to atropine sulfate; however, the response diminishes after repeated treatments. Overtreatment with atropine should be avoided. Atropine does not alleviate the nicotinic cholinergic effects, such as muscle fasciculations and muscle paralysis, so death from massive overdoses of OPs can still occur. Including diazepam in the treatment reduced the incidence of seizures and increased survival of nonhuman primates experimentally.
An improved treatment combines atropine with the cholinesterase-reactivating oxime, 2-pyridine aldoxime methochloride (2-PAM, pralidoxime chloride). The dosage of 2-PAM is 20–50 mg/kg, given as a 5% solution IM or by slow IV (over 5–10 min), repeated at half the dose as needed. IV 2-PAM must be given very slowly to avoid musculoskeletal paralysis and respiratory arrest. Response to cholinesterase reactivators decreases with time after exposure; therefore, treatment with oximes must be instituted as soon as possible (within 24–48 hr). The rate at which the enzyme/organophosphate complex becomes unresponsive to reactivators (due to ageing phenomenon) varies with the particular pesticide.
Removal of the poison from the animal also should be attempted. If exposure was dermal, the animal should be washed with detergent and water (about room temperature) but without scrubbing and irritating the skin. Emesis should be induced if oral exposure occurred <2 hr previously; emesis is contraindicated if the animal is depressed. Oral administration of mineral oil decreases absorption of pesticide from the GI tract. Activated charcoal (1–2 g/kg as a water slurry) adsorbs OPs and helps elimination in the feces. This is particularly recommended in cattle. Continued absorption of OPs from the large amount of ingesta in the rumen has caused prolonged toxicosis in cattle. Artificial respiration or administration of oxygen may be required. Phenothiazine tranquilizers, barbiturates, and morphine are contraindicated."
So Fred is the dog at home with you or still at the vets? He should be on a constant intravenous drip to combat the dehydration he would be experiencing. Poor thing. 105 fever is very dangerous. Sorry to hear that Fred. I really Hope he's in the hands of a good vet. Keep us briefed mate hope it all works out for poor little JJ
ps keep him cool cold towels to keep down the temperature mate
Fred,
I'm so sorry about your dog and hope it all goes well. I got a refund from paypal and understand why things haven't progressed. I'm still interested in getting the windscreen but you need to take care of your family. As a pet owner, I understand how attached one gets and they really do get to be part of the family. In the future when things get back to normal, I'd still love to have the Skybreaker but it's not as important as what you're dealing with now.
Good luck with everything,
Larry
The same goes for me, my friend. Take care of JJ, I know how pets become family. Nothing like unconditional love from our four legged friends. My best wishes to all of your family.
(Some of you fellas are rock solid friends, thanks for the kind words)
We are all back home.
And already back to work - finally
. Go Go SkyBreaker!
I was reading your msg from the vet but couldn't reply until I reach my home PC today. Phone VPN doesn't like the reply form box thingy... never fully loads up on my Windows Phone. Definitely can read tho so huge thanks again
Little J.J is sleeping/recovering on his mum's favorite sofa atm (special pass) while Thor (his brother) is outside in his backyard 'alone' lolllll Lost a lot of weight poor thing, didn't had a single bite for the last 5 days other than trying to chew out the drip-butterfly thing he has tapped on his wrist (lost 6 kilos)
Few notes to log what "Rottweiler Dog Poisoning by Insecticides" does and treats. Google to pick up those, might become useful for anyone in the same situation. I've posted the same on the Rottie.net forum a few minutes ago
Test results as it went - in case you have similar on your dog.
Treatment:
5x 400ml Drips (with Ampicillin) each day / for 3 consecutive days (24hrs)
4x Fever reducers (unknown drug name)
2x Hypertension/high blood pressure control (unknown drug name)
3x Blood work, 4x urine tests, + other Test Kits to rule out common disease (distemper, Lyme, HW, parasites, etc)
4 days/evening/nights later + $1,600, the dog is at finally home since this evening and so am I. Not doing 100% good but at least we got his kidney well under control and the fever back to normal.
According to his Vet he will make it out without 'too much' permanent damage(s). Whatever that means nobody can be 100% sure without a visual (i.e surgery). So we may never find out.
Unlike myself, be a responsible pet owner if you live in a populated city. Be dbl-more-vigilant if you live in a country where conditions are less than perfect.
ps. the management office have agreed to stop using ALL Insecticides where we live. Why? My wife have carried out a pretty in-depth research and found out that the stuff they use have been banned for use China-wide more than a year ago - the mgt didn't know. The villa had stocks and were still using it
The manufacturer told us the chemical loose all of its lethal capacity within one month - faster if it rains a lot.
**this should have been posted in the Off -Topic section. Apologies to all for that mistake
That's a bit of a relief - I am sure a lot of your friends on here were holding their breath, me included, waiting for some good news. JJ is part of your family and I am sure I speak for everyone on here when I say that he is in our prayers.
Wow. What a relief, Fred; from your description, I was pretty worried. Hope JJ recovers fully with no lasting effects. Daisy says hello and best wishes to JJ...
First and foremost So glad JJ IS going to be ok! If you were here in Australia the vet would have cost you 3 times what you paid Fred. On another note, hope you and your wife haven't been adversely affected by the banned chemicals! Also you really should see if you can get the management of your complex to pay for the vet and any other expenses you encountered. It IS THEIR FAULT remind them of that Fred it's not fair you be made to pay for THEIR "not knowing" the chemicals were banned. Hope you know a good lawyer there. Sorry but that really gets under my skin it's no excuse to say "we didn't know" people's lives are at stake here. Anyway my 2 cents. Glad JJ is good. Cute dog by the way. Did you get the dogs in China or did you bring them with you from Canada?
take care

**this should have been posted in the Off -Topic section. Apologies to all for that mistake
I disagree. It would have been lost in the off topic section, it was important enough to be posted where everyone was sure to see it. Now if you start posting pictures of your dogs balancing bones on their noses...
Great news that JJ is doing well and at home. He does seem to some odd thing hanging out of his mouth.... perhaps some new Rottie upgrade you've devised.
In the SkyBreakers News;
They have all left to the post office yesterday, Sunday! You'll get yours soon, unbelievable.... and sorry if it took 3 weeks. "Months" for other fellas
Other news... I think my life was reduced of MIN 25~35 years for smoking all of that pmma vapor. Was a short tripping party, thank god
Updating your tracking #s as the Poffice here email them bk to me. Its random, they are releasing by batch, little-by-daily policy (not my rules). Should take the week (4-5days) to update :/
My job's done, I go play for-free and I'll report back RE what I did with your money. Hint: I've reinvested it! look out for the upcoming news lol
Let's see - started at the headlights, moved mid car to the wind deflector. Next stop - LED lights for the spoiler - or a fix to the mysterious single rear fog light......
OH OH excellent hope it comes to me soon can hardly wait.
Will the tracking #s be via the ordering website or will you personally email them to us Fred? By the way thanks for everything, how is JJ doing?
J's tha man, never gonna be the same. He tasted what near death feels like for the first time. He's a tough puppy now loll
That was his soft silicon rubber toy in his mouth (helps cooling). He has this fetish at home, carry this thing everywhere he goes for some freakish reason. Dog was doing high fever and not ventilating normally, low energy etc... so.... that cube toy came in handy (for once). We went shooting arrows together at the pro-club this Sunday afternoon - he stayed there at my side alerted & scanning all of that 2hrs.... I think we looked pretty cool loll
Note to all, if you want to get your puppy to settle down in a flash, feed him industrial grade insecticides. Werks
ps. tracking # are inputted in the system. Gtp sends out an email automat when updated but I'll make dbl sure you get it and send a separate note mate... look up for spam lollll
pps: 21 are gone already, 47 more to shoot out of there. Nasty stuff...
Thanks for the update on JJ Fred, very glad to hear he is well and over the crisis.
Thanks also for the info on tracking muchly appreciated!!
I'll let you know when it arrives.
Look forward to your next DIY idea
As I eagerly await the arrival of my Etched LED Edgelight Wind Deflector, I thought I would attempt to remove the old one to make sure I knew had to do that before it arrived...
It seemed easy enough - two small clips and voila... However, the clips are a bit confusing. Do they get pulled up to release or pulled toward the back?
I gave it a whirl this morning - attempting to gently pull toward the back - and the darn thing snapped off...
Can someone please explain how those clips work (and in addition, how one can replace a broken one).. Pictures or a video would be very much appreciated...
You lift on the clip slightly, and then push the windstop towards the back of the car. Yes, the whole clip mechanism is cheaply made. I just replaced one of the holders attached to the roll bar. The plastic breaks easily, especially with age. Here are links to replacement parts.

Fred,
Hi. Just wanted to see if you can help. Ordered the windbreaker in mid May and the gtp website has shown status as processing ever since. However a cpl of weeks ago, my paypal payment was refunded. However the website continues to show that I have an active order still being processed. On June 16, suspecting that my order may have been cancelled but the website not updated, I ordered another. Now the website shows two orders being processed. Can you help? Thanks.
Larry
Ps. Haven't received any indication that my order has shipped. To be clear, I only need one.
SkyBreaker all gone, well nearly, 4 left to go. Unbelievable
We got caught by the post office. Max outbound daily is 5pcs and they stood by their rule all the way. Local post office is cheap, well compared to the private carriers. If they wouldn't have these rules in place everyone would use their service and they'd end up as busy as the McDonald right next door.
So that's the treatment they offer to little nobody like myself who ship without a legit business registration :/
Updated the site with all of your tracking No.
And I am not going to do nor ship out a massive group-buy for anything "Best in the World" anymore - I think lollll
Still haven't found the time to report on what I've done with your monies. I owe you guys! Will do this during the coming weeks once I get a few pics taken
Larry - I'll get one in the mail for you mate, if you promise to stop harassing me by pm, email and forum lolllll Sorry about the PP refund btw, Paypal does that sometimes
I received shipping confirmation of my new bullet proof Skybreaker 30 minutes ago
Can't wait to do the install...thanks again for all the hard work Fred!!
Rubber bullet proof mate, rubber
Yea those coated ones are indeed good. Easy install, miniature everything, comes with stylish precision CNC etc etc. They are just a little illegal
Cool kit, worth the wait I promise.
You guys with the RED leds, go easy on the brightness and all should be fine 'safety-wise'. Also, careful it is a head turner especially during the Saturday night in traffic. Nearly everyone stare at mine big time, taking pics with the mobby and all :/ Slowing down the traffic even more loll
It's still showing as 'processing' on my account on the website Fred. Guess my parcel must still be at the bottom of the pile. I know it will eventually arrive, but I just wish China Post would pull their fingers out of their collective lazy asses and mail my frikkin parcel, just starting to get frustrated that's all
But thanks for the update
Fred,
Sorry about the harassment. Guess I got too excited. The paypal thing threw me off. I'll cool my heels and be patient. And by the way, thanks again for the amazing Skybreaker Sometimes I just gaze at the windscreen and imagine the new one in place. I've bragged to a few friends about it and they make fun of me constantly. Of course, they're just jealous.
Larry
Jon - its long gone man (#CP299*903*1CN), and so all of the others I've been told this morning by my little post lady (I owe her a box of chocolate, arggg). Once I get access to my virus free PC I'll logon the gtp admin and input this into the system so you can have the full string mate.
Rushing China Post. You are having a laugh... One-point-Four+ billion population country. Just the fact that this 'post system' works at all is beyond comprehension lollll Impossible logistics made possible!
ps. they know what I am doing there (e.g. business related) and don't report me or bother me too much. As long as I don't rush them
We've unloaded a truck full of those SkyBreakers on them man... picture that for a min loll Took them a week, can't complain (personally) but I know what you mean, can be frustrating to wait for your stuff.
I apologize to you and others. One of these day GTP will have its own workforce "team" which will rank the Best in the World. Same as Apple and Microsoft
(^hmmm keep sniffin pmma vapors fred lolllll)
Hehehe no need to apologise for yourself man (it's not you) I wish you luck getting as BIG as Apple one day!! But a word of warning, if you take your goods and try and sell through eBay using China Post as couriers...Hory Clap forget about it!
By the way
How do you blind a Chinaman?
You put a windshield in front of him. LOL
Just playing on a common concept that 'Asians' are poor drivers.
Don't know how true it is, but a personal friend of mine and comedian 'Anh Do' told me that joke. Look him up very funny man.
Hey Fred,
Stumbled across this thread and just spent good part of my day reading from project inception to now - absolutely love it. Great job man! Convinced me to place my order today and join this forum to say thank you. Can't wait to get started - Happy fathers day gift to me!
I'm also happy to hear J.J. is doing better. Had my rottie for 13 years and have a sense of what you went through.
Tony
Wow, 13 years, top dog man. Longest live I had out of this beloved race is 12 years. JJ and Thor are my 7th and 8th Rotties... really hope they'll both make it to 3 years at least. This JJ thing got my wife and I thinking about moving out of here :/ we're all depressed lolllll
Got ya on the SkyBreaker Tony. Red & Bleu led choice. Will do this week and shoot out during the coming weekend. Welcome to the forum btw!!!
Larry, David, same timing on yours (if you are reading this)
I started the install process of the wind stop.
I just need to wire it up now. I can say that the lower Boxster S logo does not get in the way of the rear view at all. Fantastic.
Glad to hear JJ is doing better. Thanks Fred.
Tony
The wife and kid are at the in laws for a couple days so daddy got to play with his toys for a little.
Installed new LED side markers and the wind breaker finally, wired it to the ash tray light:
I should add, the entire install including wiring took no more than 30 mins, probably less actually, I even drilled a channel in the trim to route the wire through. The only thing I had some trouble with was taking the existing piece off without snapping the latches, I was pulling upwards instead of back of course.
Thanks Fred!
Tony, Amit, looking cool guys and welcome! That cold white looks class
I also got mine installed only this last Sunday afternoon, forever red! Love the new coated panel... I can actually wash it without having to polish it after lollll
Dunno about you guys but I had a massive static issue with mine right after install but that seem to be completely gone now. It discharged itself after a few hours of driving thankfully. So if you experience the same, put it on and drive drive drive, and drive!!!
I have some pics somewhere also. I ran my wire along the driver's side door sill to a fuse tap. I mounted the rheostat next to the document holder under the steering wheel.
A shot of my Skybreaker taken in my garage. I've thought all along that I'd try to shoot it at dusk (in a less cluttered environment!), but now I think doing it near dawn when the light is diffused might work better. Sorry this has taken so long, Fred, but it's a bit of a bugger to shoot. The Porsche crest needs to have a darker background behind it, of course. Also, I didn't bother cleaning it before taking this image, so need to tend to that when I try shooting it outside. Only other comment - when I "turn up the volume" full blast, there's a lot of visual static in the deflector itself. Not sure that'd be the case with the blue or red ones.
Is there a more convenient source of power where- by you could locate the rheostat at the roll bar firewall area and avoid visible wires?
Defrost hard window or speaker box power?
Was pleasantly surprised by the arrival of my windscreen in today's mail (I didn't think we were getting mail today because of the Fourth of July Holiday being observed today)...
Took longer to remove the broken clip (the stub was stuck in the hole where it snapped off) than it did to do the actual install. And I think it looks pretty damn awesome
Looks good... How did you get the adjustment know inside the cubby like that? I also wired mine to the ashtray light and fed the wire for that up under the trim but I have the adjustment knob just hanging over the side of the cubby which I do not like...
I pulled off the side panel on the console, drilled a small hole into the cubby, guessing at bottom height. Fed both wires through the hole. Fed the feed wire behind park brake trim into the ashtray area. Cut feed wire at length for ashtray light, and after the white end was connected, coiled up extra wire and stuffed it behind the seat belt post carpet.
No problems, all intact, looks awesome. Need to schedule some "me" time to install it :P .
Oh, and what also very neat......didn't get dinged a dime in taxes by the Post Office! Thanks Fred!!
Got around to installing my Skybreaker the other day. I decided to use the factory phone plug for switched power and it was easy to locate and connect.
This small piece of carpet under the dash slides toward the frunk and exposes the forward console area.
The four wires are Brown- (ground), Yellow- (mutes radio if phone in use), Green- (switched power, 12v when key is turned to accessory), Red- (continuous 12v, not switched).
Spliced into ground (brown) and switched (green) wires and soldered. Apologies for focus and soldering abilities.
The rest was running wires as others have done. Thanks to BruceH for the velcro mounting idea.
I'll post a night pic when I get a chance.
I pulled the side panel off (never noticed those came off) and just ran the wire behind the side panel into the bin rather than drill a hole. Seems to work much better than just hanging the wire inside over the top as I had done before ....Thanks
I'll try to get a picture of it later on, but I actually connected mine to the rear parking lights via the bundle of wires that run through the b-pillar trim where the seat belt is mounted. Super easy to get to (tough to find the right wire in the bundle) and short. No need to run wires into the center console.
Tony
I was thinking about that, or the rear defrost wiring. I wasn't sure how I would find switched power controlled by the ignition switch position so went with the phone plug option. Wanted to avoid drilling holes too.
I'd like to see how you wired that up.
I got mine installed today, the process went very well. Thanks to all for the tips. I went with the phone plug under the centre console, it was easy to get to and easy to find. Also happy with my colour selection
Fred, your product adds a lot and modernizes the look significantly!
The link is buried back several pages. Possibly a long wait (and Im ahead of you
) as the maker is an enthusiast and gets orders filled as his personal time permits...
Illuminated Wind Deflector Kit for Boxster 986 - English
Welcome to the 986 forum.
I just used a soft cloth, no cleaning product needed. Tough as nails coating, I had a bit of trouble getting the wire connector through the frame and handled it fairly rough. NO SCRATCHES, marks or anything on the perspex.
Thanks Fred, you did a great job getting them coated with the protective stuff. Mine finally arrived yesterday and I fitted it, but I decided to temporarily use a 12v SLA Battery for power source all tucked away nicely in the glove box. Switch on and off via the dimmer switch currently will probably connect a remote RF to it for a trial. I may hard wire it eventually.
matey.
Yay, it arrived! And it works!
Now I just have to find time to install it.
Great job Fred, thanks. Stay safe with that typhoon bearing down on Shanghai.
Larry,
I recommend using the contact form on his website. Please keep in mind that these are quality items and he is just one guy. I know Fred, and I guarantee you he is working diligently on the orders in the order in which they were received. Please hold fast, friend.
Charles
I'm thinking Fred might be a tad pre-occupied with weather at the moment
Thousands evacuated as super typhoon bears down on Shanghai - Channel NewsAsia
Hope you and the family are riding this out ok Fred....all the best!
I finally found some time to install my Skybreaker. I mounted the control dial inside the manual holder under the steering wheel, which I never use, and routed the wiring alongside my rear speaker install up the passenger side of the car (under the dash and sill). The cable is just long enough to reach. I tapped into the center console phone plug for power.
The most annoying part was cutting a hole in the windscreen frame, and then milling out a groove for the wire (still a work in progress). I drilled a small hole, and filed the rest of the opening, to avoid damaging the frame. I also had some trouble getting the Skybreaker into the frame. It's a very tight fit, but I finally got it.
Fred, amazing work, and thanks for accommodating my modified design! I can still see clearly out my rear view mirror, but get to enjoy the 'Porsche' as well.
Thank you!
Whoaa, now that is pretty slick, I like it. Not too small, but not too big either. Good taste... happy it turned out just the way you wanted it Rick
I also really (really) like the Amber kits. Can't wait to see one of those illuminiated on the Boxster car! I might have to swap mine. Also, anyone who wants to switch their LED color I have plenty left here and happy to snail-mail them over for the price of shipping (something like $8 loll). Sml envelop... unbelievebly expansive I know. An option for you guys.
ALL RECENT ORDERS/KITS SHIPPED!!!
Dropped 22 at the post office this very morning and updated your tracking no on the system. Been warned there is one-big-day delay on departure due to the massive Typhoon we recently got hit with... every jets were grounded for a good 24hrs.
I hate tropical storms... scary as hell (for a Canadian anyway). I was locked indoor for the last 2 days. Dunno how you guys live peacefully in the south of the USA lolllll geez man :/ Not too often for me thank you very much
Although I've been told this super dupper coating is chemical resistant, would you fully trust?! I don't but that is just me... I've never really trusted chemicals lolll So... hot water, clean microfiber cloth and you it should last forever.
Windex, amonia based, else = at your own risks! Let me know how it turns out, I'm lazy to give it a try (seriously, haven't tried anything else other than hot/warm water). Works just fine for me. I guess if you have a lot of finger prints in it you could use hand soap or at the most dish soap.
(apologies for the late response btw, no excuses really - owe you one)
Way way wayyy too kind guys thanks (Nieuwhzn, more pics man!)
Jon - thx to YOU mate and again sorry to you and to all for the delay :/
I got my SkyBreaker covered in fingerprints when I was installing it in the frame. I cleaned it with Plexus (same thing recommended for plastic rear windows) and a microfiber cloth with no ill effects. Although, I will probably use water from now on, unless it gets really dirty again.
Ill be posting pics of my amber installed on a Seal Grey, stay tuned
Such a deal, Ill take a Violet. You can invoice me at the email I paypaled or let me know how to pay....
You the man getting orders shipped despite this, thanks.
Thanks Fred, got the Skybreaker this morning and fitted this afternoon. What a top quality piece of kit! Possibly the only one in the UK (unless any fellow Brits have ordered one too). I tapped into the ash tray light and removed the bottom of the console storage unit to feed the wires through after driling a hole in the base. Unfortunately these iPhone pics do not do it justice.
I swear that I'll get some good photos one of these days. It really requires photos taken at dusk to show both the car and the wind deflector (and not in the garage
).
What exactly is needed to mount this windscreen?
I am trying to figure out what I need to by from Porsche for my 1998 Boxster 986,
I don't have any center rear windscreen, only the honeycomb inserts behind each seat and thus no mounting hardware.
It would be best to find a used one on eBay. You will also need the Wind Deflector Fastening Parts Set if your car did not come with a wind deflector. Take a look at this page on Pelican.
2001 Porsche Boxster S Convertible - Convertible Parts - Page 1
Thank you. Got a used frame with the two plastic locks, and ordered brackets on eBay. Have not found installation description for 986 (only for 987).
Does anyone have a link or description how to install? Are the holes there under the leather lining? Do you need some special drills?
Updated picture of my Red Sox windscreen... I had originally installed it so it matched the way the logo is displayed on merchanside when viewing from the front of the car. After some feedback (two of my kids who said it looked backwards, and they aren't even baseball fans) as well as a general inquiry from the creator of this awsome unit as well, I decided to switch it around... I simply had to remove it from the car, remove it from the bracket, switch it around and then reinstall it.
Here's how it looks now:
Good enough to let us see that this SkyBreaker thingy should have come as-is from factory. I'll talk to the company
and force them to get this standard accessory for the upcoming production roadsters.
Gosh Darnit. I decided to check my tracking number. The US Post Office tried to deliver mine nearly 3 weeks ago. They said a note was placed on the door. Of course, since they constantly deliver to the wrong houses in my neighborhood (swapping mail is how all the neighbors meet) I don't have the slip. Guess where I will be tomorrow in the morning? Picking up my SkyBreaker!
lolllll sounds like the little Chinese 'hood I'm having the pleasure to live in.
Glad its sorted brother
ps. 104degree here today, no clouds, no wind. Hell-on-earth, literally... been like that for about ten days now and likely to last a few more weeks. I want my boxster back :/
Hope you guys all okay on your sides there
Never got your email. Did not arrive in the mail today, I think its now officially past due. Tracking on gtprojectors says, "The Postal Service could not locate the tracking information for your request." Maybe it got hung up in customs but without tracking info theres no way to know. Do you have access to tracking info I dont? BTW also havent received the Violet LED. Your estimate of 5-7 days arrival would have been early this last week. I also never got instructions on how you wanted it paid for. No worries Fred, great product at a great price, just letting you know the situation...
Fred,
Also backtracking thru the gt website about the tracking # and overdue delivery. Don't know how involved you are with the gt company but if you can exert some influence with them to at least respond to my inquiry, it would be a bit reassuring.
Thanks, Larry
Well it's now almost a month since Skybreaker was shipped and still hasn't arrived. Still have no tracking number to find out where it might be cuz the two tracking numbers provided by the gt projectors website don't work. Attempts to contact gt projectors via their website have only been met with silence.
Fred or anyone else, can you help? Don't know what else to do? Anyone else experiencing same issue?
Thanks, Larry
My tracking number is now finally showing something, I ordered on 4 July and I got shipping info about a week later. This last Wensday tracking said China mail has released it and then Friday the US Postal service updated it to say they've received notification of a shipment. So I'm still in hurry up and wait mode but I suppose its progress.
Omg, thanks for your reply. My tracking number is finally working too. Item was processed thru California and is in us customs. Finally, some information and light at the end of the tunnel. I actually ordered my Skybreaker back in May and was one of the people who signed up to be notified by the gt projectors website in April. It's been 4 months since I started trying to acquire one.
Larry
After six weeks I finally took delivery. Sadly my complementary extra LED color was not included (I ordered Amber installed and Cool White as the extra). Ive also not heard back from Fred on the Violet he said he would hook us up with for $8 so for now the only pics I can provide is the Amber. I was super careful installing with just my hands (it goes in much easier than the old one came out) but I appear to have a nice scratch above the C that is only obvious when the panel is lit so I didnt noticed it till it was installed in the car. Despite the complications of my experience this really is a nice upgrade and well worth the price. An interesting side effect is this new wind deflector really makes the missing roll bar deflectors that much more obvious (to me anyway). Appears I now need to suck it up and get the passenger side as I already have a brand new drivers side that came with the car and has never been installed. Ill get some dusk shots soon but here are some daytime garage shots for now...
My saga was similar to a bunch of you. No indication that the tracking number would not go live until the item hits the us. That left me in limbo for almost a month, the amount of time the item stayed in China before hitting the us shores. The item was delivered in less than a week from the time the tracking number went live. Be patient, it's worth the wait. A little more communication would have been helpful. I tried Fred several times over three weeks without reply. I surmise that Fred and the gt projectors company are one and the same now since I tried their contact process repeatedly without any luck also.
Hope all is well with him.
Larry
Fred did post this once the packages were at the the Chinese Post Office:
"SkyBreaker all gone, well nearly, 4 left to go. Unbelievable

Updated the site with all of your tracking No. And I am not going to do nor ship out a massive group-buy for anything "Best in the World" anymore - I think lollll"
Since Fred is still MIA I'm hoping someone will be more familiar with this thread than I. Is it ok to use the heavy scratch remover from the Novus kit? Think I read the latest version of this skybreaker had a coating and don't want to screw up my brand new wb but I want to see what I can do about some imperfections.
I tried working this with Fred, but as he seems to be indisposed at the moment, I'll try to work it here. Did anyone order a hardened windscreen that simply said "Boxster" and get one with the shield and P O R S C H E lettering on it? I ordered the shield and P O R S C H E and got "Boxster". I'd like to arrange a prisoner exchange if you are interested.
Anyone ever watched the show "Locked Up Abroad"? If not then get to it cuz I may feature in one of those episode soon. I'm just back from Thailand where I was supposed to stay 6 days - and 13 weeks later.
Warning to all: Do NOT get 'physical' when you'll encounter a pedophile - if this ever happens to you. Does not come cheap ((that's right, read correct, I lost it)). I even had to pay for his medical bill
s
, two lawyers, and other things.... won't go in details here.
Not my fault (entirely anyway). I'll explain when things have settle at my end here.. I literally arrived back in SH 2 days ago

) posting what I've asked him to post more than a month ago :/
I'll soon be writing a book (well... a booklet). Lost 10 kilos and the rights to obtain a (any purposes) visa for Thailand permanently. Banned for life :/
Lesson learnt. Anyone witnessing a crime... look away, call the cops, do anything else other than getting involved. As sick as this may sound in some cases,
take my advice
Very glad and relieved to hear that you are alive and kicking, if not yet back to your fighting weight. Sorry you had to go through that. Some would say that you just purchased a piece of your character, and that is a worthwhile investment at any price.
As for Thailand, ****************et.
Welcome back!
Fred will let everyone know when he is back up to speed and after he get life things sorted out at home
If you read his threads, you would know the kind of stand up guy he is
Sorry to hear Fred, I'm just glad you made it back home. Take some time to decompress and get yourself back mentally and physically. I can't even imagine what you must have gone through. Great to hear from you again
Real sorry to hear about the debacle Fred! Glad to hear you are all right and back home though, it could have been much worse. Its certainly good to have you back on here, you were missed!
Fred; Some people have have Honor, High morals and character that do not allow them to walk away from this type of human garbage. You probably have seen we have 2 marines that are fighting for their careers for doing the same thing in Iraq. It is amazing that people who do the right thing are then punished in this F'd up world we currently are living in. Take pride in knowing you did the right thing and for that I salute you.
Smiles to you Fred ! So life got in your way but everyone you touched was worried and patient to hear from you. Let me know when you have more product for us !
Sounds like a horrible experience, but I'm glad to see everyone's glad you're back (I joined the site not long ago and have been reading of your projects with great interest.)
When everything gets back to some sort of normalcy, I look forward to doing business with you.
Fred - Welcome Back, glad to hear you're back home. I really used to like going to Thailand - but after hearing your story I think I will avoid it.
Best thoughts to you & your family.
Don
@Nine8Six,
I've read through this thread and read about your woes near the end. Unless I've missed it though, I didn't see any statements as to whether or not the Skybreaker is still available for order. My dad just bought his 2001 Boxster and this is the sort of classy add-on that I would surprise him with as a gift.
Steve
Hey folks,
Wanted to revive this thread, pardon me! Let's excite the idea of prototyping the "SkyBreaker Version II"
A lot of you guys asked for a kit and that recently got me thinking; while waiting for production machines to free up it would be a good idea to look up at members' requests for that SkyBreaker again before cracking on another batch of those. Two of the most recurrent requests below:
Custom colors:
A lot of you asked for RGB led. Therefore 16,777,216 possible colors.
Brake light/Safety add-on:
Synchronizing the brake pedal action and turning ON the RED led at full brightness. 3rd brake light essentially.
Let me know what you guys think. I'm personally all up for the challenge and willing to engineer this so that Version 1 can easily be retrofitted with Version 2's hardware if anyone is interested to upgrade, or vice versa e.g. to save cost.
Price:
I'm looking at getting some extra panels hard-coated in the very near future. Problem remains the mfg's "min.qty" requirement so this is why I'm going to give it my best shot and add-on those requests. Hopefully this will get a few more of you guys to join our SkyBreaker Club! Of course the Version II will cost $986.00 (LEDs and M3 screws are optional too) but in all seriousness, I really doubt it will end up costing much more than what it did before (+20~30 bucks max, I'm guessing).
Ideas, suggestions, comments, flaming, requests; All Welcome!
Count me in! I'd be happy just with version 1 though. I don't personally need the ability to change colors or do the brake light thing, though I can see how others would.
$986 seems appropriate
If I'm reading this correctly. Syncing the lights on the skybreaker to illuminate brighter than normal, at the same time as the 3rd brake light, every time you press on the brakes?
Would take away from the longevity of the lights?
Sounds like a great safety feature though, I'm all for it.
Thanks Gator. Sure thing, I'll get one out for you
Something like that. If I've clearly understood what many requested...
Example:
My SkyBreaker ambient color is that superb porsche amber color and brightness dimmed down (duty cycle of 5%). When I press on the brake the led will automatically glow RED at full brightness (duty-cycle of 100%). When I release the brake this all goes back to that superb porsche amber color and brightness dimmed down (duty cycle of 5%).
25k~50k hours on the led, generally (thermally managed properly). Not sure how many years this makes, too lazy to click the MS Calculator, but I'm sure its a lot.
Counting you in man, thanks!
So if I wanted the SkyBreaker ambient color red, it would just be a dimmed red, and upon pressing the brakes, it would be full brightness red, got it!
Just a thought, what if your car's 3rd brake light is wired for the multi-pulse blinks before staying fully lit? would it effect the SkyBreaker in any way? OR..... what if the SkyBreaker was able to do that too?
IDK, just coming up with ideas
We'll end up using a 32bits ST micro or those 10bits atmel avr. Not sure which but either way it will be fully programmable with gpio + a usb port where we'll be able to re-program it to do whatever-we-need-it-to-do (sense, flash, blink, pulse, fade, rainbow this, spectrum that, colors memory, preferred brightness levels, etc etc). Your creativity is the limit really...
Let's see! Might just need to tap the signal, vcc and ground wires from the brake pedal sensor just a few inches under the steering column. If some crazy custom flash is needed elsewhere I don't see any problem, yet, I'll help out with that no worries
Uhhhhh...... "DUH......"!
Of COURSE i'm in!
Wicked cook stuff!
Put me on the list, please. One with all those bells and whistles.

Awesome!
Saw the original post a couple years ago... but can't recall what you're asking price was (not going to read 36 pages, sorry). Can you share with me/us what will be your asking price(s) this time around?
I could be very in. Thanks!!
Awesome.
Silver986, I'm aiming to get it out as low cost as possible. Let me estimate the number of man hours that will go into the assembly, BOM and handling and I'll revert back with a final number. One thing sure atm it has to be under $199.95
*******
So... let's get things started shall we. Spent most of yesterday's evening researching for what I thought would have been an easy find (a compatible 5mm wide RGB led strip that is) and ended up wasting nearly half day trying. Just nowhere to be found other than those monster size 1/2" wide strips (5050) that could light up a small town. All that to say; Not An Easy Start lol
What do we do when we can't find hardware? That's right, we DIY here at 986forum. So let's make our own in the exact same size and configs as the previous Ver I so all can interchangeable, keeping the same ultra-light design and all that cool stuff. Here I'm using a 1.2mm thick/2 layers stack with 12x (twelve) RGB 3528 LEDs. Identical to the previous set-up with the only exception of upgrading one color for 16 million others.
Step 1: I'm sending this out to a local PCB manufacturing later on today so this should be in-house in a few days only. I already pick-ed up the LED from my local electronic market and been told by the resident experts that they are the most reliable of them all, wide angle projection, has a diffuser overlay and the most popular by the locals. So let's give them a try and we'll move on to the driver and micro right after, and if all goes well!
I'll update with visuals as I go, same old 986forum DIY theme haha!
^ Circuit consist of 4 sections in parallel with each of those section consisting of 3 LED connected in series.
Requires 12VdC and pretty standard 'led strip', we aren't inventing anything here.
^ Identical size to the previous strip we had so no modifications is required to the existing design! I love doing
pcb but dislike routing those things... 12x 4P led didn't make that task easy on that 5mm wide board :/
^ Final result. Although showing green on the software visual this will be manufactured in black. Just to ensure we
aren't getting that green reflection, I doubt but just in case, same price anyway.
~ 2 bills? I'd be in.
I'm assuming, correct me if I'm wrong, that the part will be a plug-and-play... and that we'd be removing our existing windscreen and plugging in your part? Or... are we sending you our existing windscreen and you're fabricating on top of that?
I'm thinking if you're selling the complete package one might just sell their existing windscreen making the purchase of your part a no-brainer. You know... offset the expense of the "cool" part by selling the "boring" part.
Thanks!
Here is what remember from the last time: Fred sent a new panel, LED strip and control box. You would remove the plastic frame from your old panel - so you needed the original wind screen to start. You put the led strip in the bottom of your frame and then install on the new Skybreaker. Then run the control box to some power connection in the center console, followed by connecting the control box to the led - via routing the wire run under the carpet behind the set and the trim around the b pillar.
I have to say this was the easiest and snazziest upgrade to my Boxster. I'm not even close to being a DIY guy, but I got this installed and connected no problem. Go for it guys, it's a very cool upgrade that'll make your car stand out.
Good god this is looking pretty damn good, Ian. I mean the whole set-up, color, yellow rollbar, honeycombs, Porsche crest, jeez man... akeeper. Thanks for posting, good inspiration (and motivation!)
Nope, not as good; ITS TEN TIME BETTER!!! Literally optic-quality clear, no defect, same material (pmma) and professionally coated (scratch/chemical resist). Not all that bad, Bran
The brake feature is optional of course, just omit the extra connection.

*Update*
I've seen that our RGB Led PCB mfg was completed today so once we receive this (late weekend?) we'll be able to prototype on the micro and get drivers working. Also ordered ICs for the driver, we'll try the TI's TLC59731 (single-wire driver) and a ULN2003 Darlington transistor arrays. We are dealing with common anode leds here so not exactly sure who will win the switching job, let's see when we get the parts.
Once we have the RGB and Brightness circuit all dialed-in, we'll move on to an input for the brake signal and wrap this for the electronic part of the upgrade. Should be easy, not!
^ If only I could learn to be as efficient as these guys. They wrap-up hundreds of completed pcb in-a-day these chaps, go figure :/
Hi 986,
I'm requesting some clarity, please.
Are you selling the entire unit? I pop out my windscreen (store it... sell it... trash it... whatever) and for your purchase price I receive an entire unit? You know, snap it in... "plug" it into some juice... and I'm good to go? In other words, as another poster suggested, I don't have to dismantle my existing part (removing the clear "glass/inserting your "glass"/ snapping it all back together bull****************)?
Also, are you going to be engraving onto the "glass"? You know... Boxster... Porsche... 986... etc?
Thank you for your consideration.
Cheers!
You remind me, where is my old (oem) windscreen glass panel... completely lost track of it. Possibly lost it somewhere... garbage that'd be I'm sure lol
Starter986, snap it in... "plug" it into some juice... and your are good to go, correct:
1. simply flip out the old panel
2. drill a miniature 3mm diameter hole in the bracket's bottom groove (for the 3mmOD wire)
3. Slide in the new SkyBreaker
4. Place the controller in the console compartment, run the wiring down to the ashtray's 12Vdc
5. Done. The whole install takes 30-45min max
The panel cutting is done by myself and so are all those fancy custom designs you saw. I'll post & PM on the ordering procedures when we are ready to crack on the production. *Note* that you can always design your own and send over the vector file if you need something really special (some did that too). For "vector" graphic design use
https://inkscape.org
(no jpeg, png, or anything pixelated... need "vector" AI, SVG, EPS, etc).
Starter986, I'll take you out from the list for now, sorry for the confusion. If you are 100% convinced this is for you then just let us know here and we'll hop you back in
Thank you.
The SkyBreaker. This means the entire unit, correct? The frame... the snaps... the "glass"... the LED module. I sell my existing part... get the cash... pull from my wallet the difference... pay you. Yes? No?
And... the part will run ~$200? Please add me to that list if affirmative on all counts.
Thank you for your consideration. You Rock.
The SkyBreaker is:
1. Polymethyl methacrylate (pmma) clear panel (direct replacement of your existing one)
2. A stylish and lightweight thermal enclosure, all custom CNC to adapt the lighting system
3. The lighting system itself (previously a single color flex led strip, now a pcb with RGBs).
4. A controller to remotely manage features such as colors and brightness. Enclosure also CNC.
5. A custom high resolution laser etching/design of your choice
6. Quite a few man hours for kit assembly, edge polishing, surface anodizing of parts, etc.
To note: The frame and the snaps are not included. You get to keep your existing hardware but can safely dispose of that oem clear panel/glass/acrylic/window thingy afterward.
Hope this help, let me know if you have any questions!
ps: have a look at the first 2 or 3 pages of this old thread for parts visuals!

Thanks guys, and have a wonderful weekend too
Fred - Interested in this product, but strictly speaking only for myself (and realizing that I may well be in the minority here), I am not a fan of the concept of the LED lighting bit.
Wondering if it is possible to do the screen w/o the lighting, but only an 'etching' of the clear screen so that the logo bit is visible? In other words, the appearance should be about the same as the lighted version would be with the lighting not turned on?
Thanks - DM
Dave, absolutely.
I'd be more than happy to get you an exact replica of the existing panel with a quality etch of your choice at a reasonable price. That without any illumination or additional hardware as you request (i.e. just the panel & etch job).
If you are happy with this let us know here on the thread and I'll put you in. The more we are for the panel min.qty order & coating the better! (supplier/coater won't budge under 50x (min.qty) and I don't want all that extra to be on "my tab" lol

I'll PM everyone as soon as I possibly can guys. Let's e-upgrade this first, get the panels to the Coating Mfg next (arrgg), and let's go crazy and etch those last. Thanks again everyone. Enjoy the weekend!
Will white be one of the colors that would be available in the led strip? I love the color options and brake function, but would like white as option if its possible since ai have a white boxster?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Excellent question. I'd lie if I'd tell you that the RGB mixture can outperform let's say single color LED cool or warm whites. Probably not but we could be in for some surprise, I do not know, yet.
The PCB shipped this morning so I should have this in hands tomorrow or the following day and I'll test these color first thing for you.
For white (R.255, G.255, B.255)
For warm white (R.255, G.244, B.229)
I'll report back!
This is the stuff they coat LED with to achieve that magical pure white (phosphor). Its mixed in with a clear epoxy and dabbed on top of the LED. I'll order some (a massive $2 lol) to test out and see what we can achieve with this process. I'll get a gram in 5 microns, just for fun. (I know I know, crazy stuff... all up for learning new tricks, that's all lol).
"The Phosphor white method produces white light in a single LED by combining a short wavelength LED such as blue or UV, and a yellow phosphor coating. The blue or UV photons generated in the LED either travels through the phosphor layer without alteration, or they are converted into yellow photons in the phosphor layer."
Just curious, if you wire up the brake connection can you still just use the LED in any color?
Is it:
A. Off until you press the brake then red when you do
B. Default color until you press the brake and then red when you do
Is there a switch on the control box to the the brake mode on and off?
-Brian
Answer is "B". It will ship like so as default
Although, we want this to be programmable so if someone wants "A" and use it as 3rd brake light either myself of the user can re-write the firmware with that specific feature enabled. I'll have a full tutorial on how to do this later on, no worries!
Regarding the option to have the brake signal input (or not) see inputs below. E.g. if you do not want the brake light to sync with the SkyBreaker just omit the Brake Signal line to the controller.
Hey SkyBreaker Club!
Just an Express Update on where we stand and where we are going next. In short: I have finalized the BOM, ordered and received the parts & ICs needed to put a prototype together, measured the current and freq, and got most of the C code tested and ready. We are full mode RGB at 168Mhz! Next: Get the schematics sorted, route a PCB for the controller and modify the controller's enclosure to house the new kit (wiring, strain-relief boots, ect etc).
Following the DIY theme, here goes some visuals of how its done at my end (between coffees and cheese, obviously!):
^ RGB leds are fabulous, couldn't more be happier how this turned out. Since those are custom they fit perfectly
within the mounting heat-sink also.
^ ICs, breakout pcbs, and passive many other good stuff (not shon in this pic). All goes to show how those sort of
prototypes start-up from ground zero, to a functional product.
^ Breadboard all wired, decoupled supply if coming from the debugger so no fuss here. Just getting the ICs ready
so we can write the code for them.
^ Writing code, some nasty time consuming stuff, particularly the SPI Flash IC that we'll use to store colors in memory.
^ Sniffing SPI traffic on the scope. All about clocking and piping the right bits & bytes streams to and from those ICs.
Features of today's ICs are pretty wicked and advanced, so are their precise timing requirements :/
Long live Coffee! I'll update as soon as new development comes in!
Man if only you'd see how I do my blueberry pancakes you'd be in for a serious blast, much worthy of a DIY, one day, maybe, let's see
Thanks Maytag, glad to hear you like to see those sort of diy'ers. I'll try to get those visuals and more of all that good stuff coming your way
Looks good Fred. I'm just casually following along waiting 'till it's time to place an order. I'll want two or three. Maybe four. I really regret buying *only* one set of the headlights.
Thanks John
Ok, I'll keep/reserve at least one for you, for the moment. Just to make sure you get the kit at least
Although two or more shouldn't be an issue as I might need to send out 50 to the coating at the end :/ Let's see how this all works out...
I swear to God nothing evil comes out of Nine8Six Corporation Limited, Incorporated, Hobby, etc etc. Nowhere, nada, never-did-never-will. "Peace & Love" only man
Guys, slowly coming out from Chinese New Year at my end (and entering chaos, as it appear) so things slowed down during the last 10 days, sorry about that. Its back to work for me this coming Monday so I'll update as soon as dev come out.
Chaos, yes. Take care over there! I was just in HKG and supposed to go back next week but it is looking doubtful. All of our China mainland flights are canceled into March
At least that is today’s plan
Thanks Captain, I'll be vigilant (hope yourself and others will too).
I was in fact denied access to the industrial park where my shop is located this morning... I haven't been there since more than a week and was rather surprised to see new entry measure in place :/ I was asked to seek authorization from the local authorities to gain access to the park and premises, which my wife already dealt with, successfully. Just goes to show though...
Sorry to hear this impacts on your commercial routes and planning. Lots of speculations as to 'what's-going-on'... from engineered virus all up to biotech/lab research gone wrong, Chinese ppl are upset, obviously, no doubts. I'm glad to see our Indian friends actively trying to map its structure so to have a better understanding (
https://www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1101/2020.01.30.927871v1
)
Long live the Coffee! That'll save us all, no worries
Hey fellas, just a quick note to let you know that we are taking a break for a few weeks. I'm at a friend mansion (a 16x10 meter old wooden cabin to be precise) in Inner Mongolia just a few miles from the outer Mongolia border with my wife Helen and the dogs. We drove the whole thing last week and just starting to get used to how-things-works-here (like fetching wood seventeen times per day to get heating going and the cooker working :/ ).
Not going to reply to this message as I have to drive 45min on iced roads just to get a signal and access to wifi. So... back to my ice fishing later today... we've been feeding on rainbow trouts, Lays' Salt & Vinegar crisps and Coca Cola since 4 days now lol
Let you guys know when we're back in Shanghai and resuming work, should be soon as the situation seems to be leveling down now, sort of...
All the best to you all!
For getting physical and beating up an advertised pedophile picking and 'touching' a 8 years old girl in front of me and while on a holiday/dining with my former boss in Thailand? Yes, I did, up to until the day I've complied to his request and paid his f n medical bill (I totally lost it and fck'ed him up quite badly at the end). Best month of my life (not).
Fred, we want ya healthy, safe, and sound.
But I see you getting pinged about the wheel center-caps.... I jsut want to bump this thread back to the top so you don't start thinking those center caps are higher priority. hahaha.
(I'ma send you a photo of my new project with your center caps though!! )
I had one of these for my 986 (logo and lettering in amber) and miss it since getting my 987. Know Fred is on hiatus and may be a while before he's back in his lab again creating works of art but has he done one for a 987?
Haven't. But can't see what stops us from working on this together. Let's see if I can get my hands on a spare kit locally. I'll look on my side but if you know of any readily advertised F.S. do let me know and I'll import this over. -or- if you're happy to send over your existing kit then let's do that and I'll ship it back along with the engineered replacement (free, ofc!).
Time to get the balls rolling again, change mind and entertain so to speak. This covid-s-hity-19 changed quite a few plans on my side, which I won't go into details now as I feel each and everyone of us have their own crap to deal with.. whether that is business, finance, work, logistics, family, etc... my issues are much smaller than some of others', so... for later.
Where were we? Ah, yes, the controller... let me finish this prototype and sign it off, so we can move on to getting these kits laser'ed and ready for the spring/summer season
So... we've agreed to have:
1) RGB Colors & Brightness
2) Brake Light Signal
3) Some fun...
Spent the day yesterday thinking how the HMI would work out. Thought of analog buttons but then quickly realized we are in year 2020(I think?) and buttons where, like, 1969 style user interaction. Got in-touch with an old display supplier today and asked whether they had small displays engineered for cold weather "with capacitive touch". To my surprise he said he had them in all sizes (lol). So had him sending me the dwg to see if I can fit this bad boy into a relatively small enclosure (hand-held) and I'm quite happy with the size, not much bigger than what we had before anyway (picture a mini-iPhone thingy).
The display is 240X340 resolution, 2.4", capacitive touch (i.e not the old resistive style needing a silly stylus), 16-bit, writes at 60ns (!!!), -20~70dC spec'ed.
My question to you guys is this:
Now that we anticipate to have a (half)modern controller, "is there anything else that you would like to have in this thing apart from RGB and some fun?". I'm thinking developers in mind as I know a whole lot of you folks would love to thinker with this so I just need to know if you need some extra bells & whistles in the kit e.g. K-Line (aka make your own Durametric or performance map up-loader), Roof-controller, Jet-Propulsion On-Switch, some extra GPIOs for
.....
Open for both brilliant & silly ideas, please chime before I hit the schematic design!
^ Just a quick CAD perspective. Trying to gauge the PCB size we'll be given to play this out.
Let's see...I think we all agreed, that we would like to have that controller integrated into a Porsche rear view mirror, so we could additionally connect that to our WLAN backup cameras, right?
Back-up cam?? you meant X-RAY Vision to see through clothes, right?
Man, the rear-view mirror enclosure. I think you are sounding innovation right there Bran! Let me have a look at the existing one and see if we could re-use the glass and mount but have it re-designed.
Any (other)brilliant idea(s) like this one, hit it guys!
If we are going to have a controller for the wind screen lights, would it be possible to add outputs or controls for the same or similar led’s to add footwell lighting or???
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Quick Update on the LED winner; we are going for addressable LED. Most commonly known as WS2812B. Therefore a POS(+) NEG(-) and a IO (3-wires). The LEDs are independently/digitally driven by SPI and a clock source so this makes it much easier for me to drive this controller-side wise. It makes no difference to the user other than being able to create custom fading/mixing patterns and other cool effects, which I suspect will be of any interest or use, but the feature is there if needed.
Trying to visualize your idea. How do you see this working out installation-wise? Do we need a whole lot of lighting or 1 (or 2) LED is sufficient per each sides? I'm interested to hear more when you have time.
Is below what you had in mind? Something you can control via that SkyBreaker controller for both color and brightness? (Thanks btw!)
edit: don't feel overwhelmed by those ports, possibly going to be a single-core harness with a stress-relief boot instead (cleaner) or a one multi-pin connector sharing same GND and (+). Yet to arrive at that part of the design, just putting this here for feature visualization/debate.
Yep, love it! Depending where the controller is mounted I would imagine a strip or 1-3 leds depending on brightness to add under dash on each side for the footwell lighting. Maybe other light applications for those not interested in footwell lighting? Option for rope or others if the connections would be interchangeable and can be sourced even later?? Would the color/controls be independent of the skybreaker or need to be the same?
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I like this idea. The visual speaks too, not a bad in-car mood lighting at all in fact, thanks for putting this up (easy to understand!).
The color & brightness can be independent from the skybreaker and a software option (checkbox) can be labelled "synchronize color" so to have the same color for both footwell and skybreaker. The brightness can (and should) remain independent though.
So... SPI1(SkyBreaker) and SPI2(Footwell) with a color sync option. I'll see if I can wire & write this up. The only challenge now is to think of some ways to have 3 LED per each side enclosed in some type of enclosure that can be discretely mounted somewhere in there. Let me think of something... I'll update on the progress
Question... If looking for more HMI interactions and possible growth, couldn't the controller wireless connect to either my phone or my headunit?
I have not done a lot of work with leds and their control, but in the robotics and IoT applications I have been working with it almost always makes more sense to manage the controller over wireless rather then add the complexity of lcds and touchscreens to the device.
Thoughts?
Edit: added:
I might be failing to correctly imagine the final outcome.. I am picturing having to incorporate a 2.4" screen somewhere in my car and although the mirror is a good idea, personally I think I would rather keep things simple in the boxster. This car is more about driving to me.. but if could control from my phone or headunit.. that is a bonus.
Read all, quoted the key message and understand fully what you are saying. And you are 100% correct. Main challenge being that cross-platform impediment and management from a coding perspective; Steve got an iPhone, Ruth got an Android, lil sister got an HTC, big sister got the new XYZ and cousin have his Blackberry, you see where I'm going with this...
Sought of using a cross-platform one-fit-all solution e.g. a browser addy
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xx:XXXX
and port over lets say a NRF24L01+ or a LT8920 radio IC (2.4Ghz) but then the work involved is equivalent if not more than simply coding an X&Y axis touch screen. The radio would also require FCC ID (if compliance is an issue for anyone) :/
Finally, if the device would be used daily like a tune-in radio or similar then it would make sense to put in connectivity but in this case chances the color & brightness settings will be set once (or twice) then forgotten.
Not all lost cause. We'll have extra GPIOs on the device and probably use a nice quad size for developers to expand this controller to what-ever-they-want. That would include connectivity if what they add in the future requires that feature!!!
If there is anything that could convince me otherwise please do let me know and I'll reconsider my opinions. Thanks for trying to help out, appreciated btw!
Edit: Adding in a MCP2021A-330E/SN, sort of a gift to our Devs who wish to have both read & write access to the ECU and car data and/or build their own HMI around that (comm via k-line over 10400baud). So see, plenty of other tricks you'll be able to do with this lil cool box
Already half-way in the preliminary design. Sort of gauging what we'll need in term of hardware so to get this on order for tests. So far got the MCU, Display, a Quad-SPI Flash (for the display assets) and a K-line transceiver. Yet arrived to the SMPS, protection and filtering to power up that kit. We have a 64 pins quad there and from the look of things we'll need to beef this up to 100pins already lol All good fun!
Absolutely.. admittedly I have a software bias and see design challenges through that lens. My choice here would probably be WebBluetooth in a PWA app. It is then 1 application for most platforms. But that said, I acknowledge the overhead and while I would not mind throwing down the code myself it would require maintenance and patching, 2 years from now x api is no longer supported and the reality is hobby time is hard to come by. Now if it were something that had a wide audience and was no longer a hobby, that is different :P. All joking aside though I think sort of scope creep is what i feared in general with the screen and touch. I am curious to see what the possibilities are too (and open to them) but unless it is something really killer, I think I am personally more inclined to go with the simple buttons that don't have me taking apart half my interior to run wire to the screen. Ironically I used to rip brand new cars apart and stuff them full of screens, computers, cameras and all sorts of **************** and now I want them as close to original as possible.. Sorry, digression
Yes.. when it comes to hardware i live blissfully in the naive prototype playground, buying controllers with approved radios, etc. That said I am following this thread with great interest because I want to understand the process better. Thank you for providing all the detail you do. When I get a few breathers over the next couple of weeks I am going to try to dig more into the details
I agree, but I think the other factor is how integrated it is and accessible. I think an android auto / apple car play head unit app that let you manage all interior led colors would likely get a lot of use. For all I know they are already available.
Cool.. looks like a basic serial connection, could actually send that to a BT module if i got the inclination (or just solder up to a Arduino's serial for simplicity) and got board and wanted to create such an app
. thank you!
BTW.. what type of messages would I want to send over the connection to the controller?? (Sorry if you have not gotten this far yet or if you posted it already)
Pardon my short memory I've just realized we had a chat about a car PC a few months back. Glad you've found out this thread and chiming in some good points, all very valid in fact (thanks!). If all of that stuff would be easy to implement trust me I'd swing in all your ideas in a flash, but as you know (I'm sure you do) its always about compromises :/
Didn't know Apple brought-in interior lighting control in their product. I find it rude that they've forgotten all about the SkyBreaker. I'm insulted, let me raise an official complaint right away
A BT-over-uart would work perfectly fine, good idea btw! That uart would take a 0x33 "init" at 5 baud (write), wait for a 0x55 response from the ECU (read) and after that you'd send out requests (mode, PID) to comm with the car. e.g.
uint8_t message[5] = {0x68, 0x6A, 0xF1, 0x01, 0x11}; // ask for throttle pos
Modes and PIDs conversion at

Something like that.
ps. I'm up to hacking the A/F so to get seasonal performance maps uploaded. I may get in touch with someone I know back in the UK who specialize in car performance mapping and see if he is interested in partnership. e.g. you'd buy his engineer service, get a re-map for your vehicle and have that uploaded before a track day (or illegal night race at the industrial park, in my case LOL) and have the original oem map restored after that, You get the idea....
Anyway. All-very-early indeed. pps; Just had two of those (kick-arse) capacitive displays arriving today, I'll breadboard one over this evening to confirm the pinout and see how that goes! They are incredibly beautiful and well engineered it appears, so slim too
There are systems out there already that work with LED's and Bluetooth. I have XK glow for ambient lights and you can do alot of cool colors and have it change with speed or music etc..
The capacitive touchscreen is cool if we could fit it in the batwing area? I have some buttons there for heat seat warmers and the LED light. If that was touchscreen it would set it apart.

We are so young, forever will, that's good Tony!!!
True that, its all over here too and in several voltage, port to android, iphone, hand held, you get dizzy just looking at all those options. But none can do brake signal input, expand to dev's thinkies (k-line?), and none comes with a sexy CNC enclosure with a built-in quality IPS capacitive touch display
Thanks for linking-up, good catch I had that in mind too. We have them here in fact, 100% custom. Using a similar solution from a domestic manufacturer for an HMI active membrane switch (recessed push-buttons and clear window). Completely different alley though (i.e. automation system). You send them a *.AI template with the pantone colors and they ship you out your membrane in <48hrs. Interestingly enough, they cost X5 more (per unit) than that IPS display if you consider a small quantity... which is our case :/
Anyway. All brilliant ideas none the less, thanks for sharing those along guys and keep em coming.
Sounds good, theyre pretty easy to come by on the used market so I ordered one off fleabay for $100 (hopefully its in good shape). Shoot me a PM (or reply to the PM I sent you a couple weeks ago) with your mailing address and Ill send you 2 kits, send me back the best of the two and the other you can keep.
They'll both be refitted! probably going to get that extra one priced eventually so pass on your paypal addy and I'll void the shipping cost on those. Pm sent.
