The lack of backup camera functionality is not an issue as, for security reasons, I fitted a rearview mirror DVR dashcam with three cameras.

I used pieces of wood as my 'brackets' trimmed down to the right thickness for shimming the unit in the cubby to make sure gaps were good..

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Searching Google and Crutchfield gives me a headache because I cant find what Im looking for. Any ideas?
Yes - I know there are past posts about this. But car stereos change a lot. A topic from three years ago isnt that relevant anymore.
Looking for:
Double DIN
Backup Camera
Bluetooth Audio - Music
Bluetooth Audio - Calls
Physical volume ****
Apple CarPlay
Flush mount (not single DIN with floating display)
For some reason, I cant seem to find this criteria.
Help!
If you dont need the backup camera PCCM plus is really the best way to go. Although expensive, Its the first mod on my C4S and absolutely love it.

Past searches on Crutchfield seemed to indicate that most of the choices I'd seen done here don't fit, which makes it tougher to search there. I'm also thinking backup cam might be a good idea for my aging eyes.
I have a Sony XAV-AX1000 in the 996 and really like it. The subtle, non flashy design suits the 996 interior. The buttons aren't period correct for the car, but at least they don't look like they just came from 2 Fast 2 Furious .

For whatever reason, I don't have a great pic of it.
The backup cam is kinda a deal breaker for me. I have PTSD from backing up my boxster several years ago in my own driveway into the front of my own 4x4 with a heavy duty winch bumper. 100% my fault, but it didnt end well for the boxster.
I used this Kenwood from Rod at CAI-Store.com. The site says out of stock, but I'd call and check. When I bought mine I think it may have said sold out then as well.

I also dealt with Rod and CAI-Store.com and was beyond pleased with his customer service and expertise. I used his online directions (and called him once) and installed the head unit and back-up camera myself . I'm confident that if you gave him a call, he can set you up with something to meet your needs. Good luck!
It certainly does look good!
I guess my desire to control volume with a **** is an old guy dream.
I want technology, but at the same time, I prefer buttons and ***** when driving. Eyes on the road, not the radio...
Anyway - Thanks for the tip! What model is that?
The current and updated version of what you see is the Kenwood DNX997XR. I believe I have the earlier DNX994s which was replaced by this model. Also has a remote of that helps. I have had no issues at all and love the features this offers.
Haha! When youre right, youre right. And I was not paying attention. That one is close! And not too expensive. Not wireless, but otherwise might fit the bill.
It does have bluetooth; so you can still stream music, hear directions, take calls, etc. You only need a cord if you want to use apple play. You won't find wireless apple play until you spend around ~$1000. I've seen USB adapters that plug into the usb port of head units and can give you wireless apple play, but I think there is an annoying amount of latency.
If you can still find one, the Sony xav-ax100 meets your specs. It was superseded by the ax1000 which has the usb plug on the front and loses the track advance bottoms. I prefer to older one where you can route a cable from the back. Both blend in pretty well to the oem switchgear IMO.
Mine is a pioneer (I think 4500nex). It has the wireless Android auto/apple carplay. The wireless is worth it's weight in gold. It was 700 back when I bought it. Crutchfield says a lot of the double din are incompatible without modification. If you had the stock Nav you don't have to modify at all. If you don't have stock Nav then you may need to remove a cross piece. You will also need to move the HVAC controls
I did my C4S last year with a kit from CAI-store.com. save yourself a headache and call them. Great customer service. He can walk you through your various options and installation issues.
I talked to Rod last week after calling numerous other local car audio dealers and doing research on this site and others. Their customer service was fantastic - bought a unit from them. Will be installing in my 2001 996TT this week. Thanks CAI for the help!
Metra makes cheap adapters that you have to connect to the proprietary connector from the headunit.
When I installed the Sony XAV-AX6000 in my 1999 C2, I used this adapter:
https://www.crutchfield.com/p_120701...g-Harness.html
I ordered through crutchfield so the wiring harness was pre-done. I think one wire had to be spliced for the whole job. The mounting was by far more complicated but the mounting hardwares was provided too.
I put this in my car and am happy with it. Does everything you are asking for and much more (like TPMS and read codes through OBD)

Kelly, I also selected the Kenwood DNX997XR, but it doesn't have the volume ****. It does have a remote fob though. I replaced all the speakers and the amp, plus added a backup camera too. I have a Cab and feel like I need a sub-woofer still. Otherwise, I love it. And yes, I originally wanted a "Volume ****" too, but couldn't find any units with the **** available at the time. Good luck!
Did this head unit include a GPS receiver or are you just running Waze/Google Maps/other from your phone? I am interested in this head unit, but dont want to use my phone for GPS/maps. The ad on Aliexpress is not clear on how this head unit works.
Thanks!
It comes with its own GPS. Wireless bluetooth, carplay etc ... . Since it is Android, you can download what apps you want. I also got mine with TPMS sensors and a wireless OBD2 reader.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005...2a121802wnXduM
I got mine from the 'heregoes' store on Aliexpress. Had mine for a few months now, and I love it.
It has many option. Not only rear camera, but front, and even 360 degrees. Being an android device, you can have whatever apps o it you want.
this seems like such a no brainer
looks like the only difference with OEM is lack of key lightning. Otherwise it also gives a very clean OEM look.
what are the downsides? How is the fit? Does it look OEM? Any gaps? Are there any downsides
The buttons can illuminate with any colour you want.
It does not come with a bracket, so you have to fit it yourself. I think mine turned out well in terms of fitment and gaps.
As for downside, well I am not an audiophile, so I don't know how the sound compares to the brand names. But there are many sound adjustments.
yeah, I want 1) OEM look, 2) backup camera.
Im AMAZED no one has figured out how to retrofit a camera to the Porsche PCCM+. Considering how ingenious everyone on this forum is the lengths people went to make the aliexpress HU work! Blows my mind no one has figured out how to add a backup camera to a basic android device
Assuming a camera is impossible on Pccm+, the next best options appears to be AliExpress. OEM look and best in class customization potential (although all I want is CarPlay and a basic rearview cam).
How bad are the gaps on the AliExpress HU? Your install
@Jim10
looks very clean with virtually no gap, but Ive seen other pics where people had to put fillers on the sides.
I assume all theAliExpress HUs are the same size? Why do some look like they have gaps on the side, or stick out more on the top lip, whereas others look to fit more perfectly?
Modifying the PCCM+ is certainly possible, but you are looking at possible programming and adding inputs to allow for a camera (PCCM+ doesn't have inputs for that). You are looking at asking someone who knows how to do this stuff to do it for you, and the cost of that plus the PCCM+ itself ... well totally not worth it. I paid around $350 usd for my unit, and they gave me the TPMS and camera. I did spend another $40 on an OBD2 reader.
As for gaps with the Aliexpress unit, that comes down to the person mounting it. As I said in the previous post, you are fitting it yourself. No brackets come with it. I made my own.
Really totally happy with mine... !!! Old looking, suits the interior to my eyes and full functionality. But if anyone figures out how to make the factory pccm plus use a reverse camera... 🤔
I wrestled with this conundrum for months even getting as far as fitting an Alpine unit. It just wasn't right compared with the PCCM+ unit which is now safely installed and looks/works great. The lack of backup camera functionality is not an issue as, for security reasons, I fitted a rearview mirror DVR dashcam with three cameras. Not a strapon but one that fits onto the original windscreen bracket. It is slightly bigger than the OEM mirror but you would not know once installed. It is a very discreet unit that includes just about everything, even radio (not that you'd use it). I did not get mine from AliBaba but that is the only place that I can find the same unit online currently
https://www.alibaba.com/product-deta...836760194.html
Ok, I was good with mounting this thing myself until you said that you made your own brackets. Any more details on that? Have a photo or two of what you fabricated? Any tips for constructing my own?
Thanks!
It really wasn't a big deal. The unit needs to be secured into the plastic cubby of the double din opening. I used pieces of wood as my 'brackets' trimmed down to the right thickness for shimming the unit in the cubby to make sure gaps were good..
Oh dear. That is another saga. My 996 has the reversing sensors so the camera is not an urgent requirement. As I am a rag-top man first I run open almost all the time (personal best -15C) so the rear facing camera in the rear view mirror covers the security aspect. I will fit the backup camera wired and so far the cable runs under the centre console and is coiled up behind the driver's seat waiting for warmer weather. After a very long search I have just ordered a camera integrated into a licence plate light unit
https://www.fruugo.se/bil-bakre-kame...41?language=en
. This should be available in other countries and there is a wireless option. I just did not want to fit an ugly little box somewhere on the tail. Just be aware that the mirror DVR comes with neat 4-pin connectors while this backup camera has RCA lumps. There are adapters but I might try opening it up to change the cable or swap out the camera unit itself. Won't know until I get it on the workbench!
Wayne R Dempsey shows a good wiring route for a backup camera in 101 Projects for your Porsche 911 1998-2008 (You've all got that on the shelf, right?) Project no 11.
Quick update. The camera on the licence plate is a very easy swap with the one that comes with the DVR. Perfect fit, just projects a few mm more. Irrelevant really for the benefit of compatible connectors. Waiting for the Swedish winter to pass before installing
Hell's teeth! Wish I'd seen this before paying out for the PCCM+. Probably the same inside. Yes, it's nice having the crest flash up on start up but not worth the difference in price. I mean, the Ali Baba unit is only the price of three alloy-look Porsche 996 filler caps! Alright, I got one of those too.

There's a USB port you can add. I have mine poking out of the side of the console. It doesn't send a ton of juice, I think it more or less breaks even when doing GPS work. I use a cigarette socket charger for road trips.
