changed the oil today and inspected my oil filter.

YES I do have an EPS IMS bearing in my Boxster engine, which was fitted by my Porsche specialist who maintains my car.

The bearing was only changed as the clutch failed, so whilst it was all in bits I had fitted new IMS bearing, seal, flywheel & Sachs clutch kit.

also im confident the IMS bearing is ok as it was replaced about 5k ago.

Suggestion
My bearing has done about 10000 miles since fitting, yearly oil changes with Mobil 1 10w60, filter opened up & checked & magnetic sump plug show not a sign of debris.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

so i have a 2000 996 3.4. changed the oil today and inspected my oil filter. i found a fair few small magnetic pieces of metal and alot of green/brown plastic. my theory is the chain guides are failing causing metal contact. my question is how much is the timing chain guide replacement job in the UK? also im confident the IMS bearing is ok as it was replaced about 5k ago.
Brown plastic sounds like chain guides. Green bits sound like chain tensioners or variocam solenoid seals. Metal bits.........my money would be on the replacement IMS bearing. Don't think for one minute that a replacement bearing is not the cause. My money would be your bearing on it's way out. A seriously worn intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing—even if it hasn't completely failed—causes the intermediate shaft to wobble. This wobble creates sudden slack and tension spikes in the timing chains, which can overwhelm the hydraulic chain tensioners, cause the chains to slap against the guide rails, and quickly degrade them. This is worse case scenario, but I wouldn't chance anything.
I'd be calling Hartech and ask them to advise. What mileage is the engine on?
I checked my records and the IMS was changed only 3k ago, receipts say its the upgraded EPS bearing, how could that fail within 3k miles ? Potentially alot less miles, god only knows when the metal started showing
It's fine, I didn't think you were.
All the specialists don't fit them, I've just posted above 2 of the UKs most famous - Hartech & Sports & Classic Ltd, who have found fault with them. Specialists who fit them probably fell for the same sales and marketing BS a lot of folk do around the IMS bearing. Happens everyday in all walks of life, prime example is here (see below). Look behind the scaremongering and it's a scientist over egging a computer model. The scientist Dr Barnes who created it admits, giving an accurate figure is not the point – advocacy is. She says: "If by putting out these estimates we highlight to people how dangerous it is and they change their behaviour next time there’s a heatwave and our estimates turn out to be high, I will be thrilled." (her words, not mine).
Cant remember if I mentioned but I also had quite alot of green ish soft material stuck in the filter, il have to get it to a specialist, however I cant seem to get hold of my local one.
You might like to consider/ investigate the fact that EPS IMS bearings come with a 5 year warranty !
EPS also claim that they have sold over 5000 of these bearings without a single failure.
Before I get swamped with negative comments on this post. The original bearing that was removed @ 70000 miles was perfect!
My bearing has done about 10000 miles since fitting, yearly oil changes with Mobil 1 10w60, filter opened up & checked & magnetic sump plug show not a sign of debris. Yes it also gets driven hard.
My Porsche specialist will not fit any other bearings.
