Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Check oil level' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check exhaust while' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Yes, they run the car on a dyno and check the exhaust while under load.

Since I had it off to check the timing after doing the IMS upgrade.

After replacing with new ones that had crush washers.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just got the replacement engine, 77k mi. with new IMS bearing, running. Had to get it smoged here in California.
While on the dyno; the car sprung a major oil leak, such that it left a plume of smoke out of the right rear side of the car.
The smog shop hid the fact that there was oil on the floor. Knowing that I would have had it towed home.
Instead, I drove it home and just as I got in my driveway it started to have a lifter noise on the left side . I shut it off,
I checked the oil level with the dipstick. It does not register. The bottom right side of the engine has oil on it.
I have not found where the leak is. My next step is to refill the oil and run the engine on the hoist to try to duplicate the leak.
Any Ideas, help.
Thanks
Stan
The smog shop 'hid' the oil leak? Didn't the plume of smoke make you even mildly curious before you drove it home?
Hopefully it's nothing major, good luck!
It's not a dyno in the purest sense of the word but in California, cars '99 and older are tested at 15mph and 25mph on rollers with a sniffer in the exhaust.
A sudden and massive oil leak after engine work sounds like one of the rubber coated metal camshaft lids has popped out...The common cause of this ( if it indeed what has happened) is the application of too much silicone sealer on the valve cover ( stopping up the oil return channel) ..
It would be the first thing I would look for when you finally get around to inspecting it..
First thing I checked. Since I had it off to check the timing after doing the IMS upgrade.
It did not come out and has no sign of oil around it. I did not remove the valve cover.
Thanks,
Stan
I had a power steering leak that was causing smoke. I mistook the smoke on the right side for some of the same.
If I had seen the puddle on the floor; I would have had it towed. Thank you for your good wishes!

Well, that was some VERY important information.....
Anything else that you can positively eliminate from the long list of possibilities ? ( Or pertinent back-ground information?)
So I discovered the oil leak. The oil plug on the 3,4,5 cyl head did not have a crush washer.
It had an o-ring. As soon as the engine got hot , it failed. Additionally the oil pressure switch also
did not have a crush washer and was not torqued.
Correcting both of those issues has solved the leaks. The engine is running like it should.
Obviously, a real mechanic would have caught those issues.
Thanks for your help.

Stan you got me lost again. There is not a 3,4,5 cylinder head. There is a 1-2-3 bank#1 cylinder head and then a 4-5-6 bank#2 cylinder head.
What "oil plug(s)" are you referring to? Are you talking about chain tensioners or the green plugs at the end of the camshafts? Normally, when someone says "oil plug" I'm thinking of the drain plug on the sump. What are you actually referring to? Pictures please!
As stated above, these are the two parts that were leaking. After replacing with new ones that had crush washers.
torquing to 15 ft lb, eliminated the leaks. Again, thanks for your help.
