I wondered how I would remove the Y pipe and carry out a leak check, I armed myself with several balloons ready to fill in all the big holes I was about to make by disconnecting the Y pipe and air box.

Everybody said you cant replace the AOS without removing the engine, it can be done by dropping the engine a few inches and removing parts to gain better access.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

2003 996 turbo. Car is running terribly and EML is on. I put a smoke machine into the system and have found a leak, unfortunately the leak is so far forward (appears to be pretty central) that I am unable to see where it’s coming from. Is there a likely culprit? I assume the only solution to identify for certain is to the loosen the mounts and lower the engine?

POST 2Original post

Before dropping the engine I'd have another go from above with the airbox/Y-pipe out of the way. Front-centre on a 996 Turbo puts you around the throttle body/plenum and associated vacuum plumbing, and the small hoses/T-pieces are more likely than something catastrophic. There have been similar 996T cases where a loose throttle-body vacuum connection was the culprit. Smoke can also track around the engine, so try to identify the first point it appears rather than where you can see it escaping. If access still defeats you, support the engine and lower it slightly rather than assuming it needs to come right out. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-turbo-forum/1094001-intake-leak.html

POST 3Original post

I chased a vacuum/air leak with a smoke machine and found quite a few, when fixed highlighted another leak and so on and so on. The one your describing sounds very similar to the the one i had, behind the throttle body and the plenum joining the the two Sides. Turns out to be a part connected to the AOS. I replaced all the pipes, AOS etc, see my previous posts on the subject. Everybody said you cant replace the AOS without removing the engine, it can be done by dropping the engine a few inches and removing parts to gain better access. I know the turbo has the Metzga engine but maybe this helps a little.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well this turned out to be excellent advice and resulted in the most simple of all the simple fixes. I wondered how I would remove the Y pipe and carry out a leak check, I armed myself with several balloons ready to fill in all the big holes I was about to make by disconnecting the Y pipe and air box. When I came to remove the Y pipe, the front connection appeared to have a small amount of play in it, I tightened up the jubilee clips and happy days, no more air leak!
