Going from a mint 2020 with under 10000km manual Spyder to a new RS WP non-ceramic with a cost to change of the equivalent of £72k (minus a half used set of cups I m getting back as they had to put new ones on), I see both sides of that argument

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Couldn't see another main 718 Spyder thread, thinking about getting into one of these, never had a Porsche but I want a drop top and N/A engine and this ticks the bills. I'm after a later car and they seem to be around £80k - £85k at the moment, I need to watch future value as I've taken a bath on an M$ Comp not long ago which has left me a bit scarred. I appreciate these were made in lower numbers so will hold their value better but what's the general consensus of current values and where do we think these will end up in the next 1-2 years.

Think they'll hold up very well, like GT4s are. Aside from very limited edition cars I can't think of many cars that'll have softer depreciation which is an added bonus of ownership They're a lot of GT car for the money. What else can one buy that's as good an all round package? Possibly 4.0 GTS but the Spyder feels just that bit more special (I've owned both) Best of luck

Also is the exhaust note actually ok as i see many opt for change- akropovik etc. Looks like the revised ratios would have the engine spinning at 4k at 80mph, so it’d be a no to me.

POST 15Original post

I've had mine 4 years and no issues with the ratios. Would be nice to be a bit lower, but how often do you redline any car? I'm not that bothered about an aftermarket exhaust either, some just sound silly to my ears. I've put the BMC air filters on mine and I love them - much prefer induction sound anyway

kenofkens said: I too am looking at a Spyder. Intrigued to know about other people here first time or not and there thoughts behind chosing SPyder. My background i have a 992 Targa 4S with rear axle steer (makes it feel much smaller more nimble) and a 997 C2S i bought the latter for a more analogue experience. However i discovered my best days were in my Targa on any day with the roof down, due to this i decided against upgrading my C2S to a 997.1 GT3 despite a test drive which i absolutely loved, i knew the moment the sun or fair driving weather was there id be wanting a topless car. The sunroof and windows open in the C2S, just doesnt give that same experience. Never been a Boxster/Cayman fan per se but they are growing on me technically and somewhat visually, but nowhere near the curves of a 997 etc. I started off test driving a 981 Boxster 3.4 S PDK, now i have to say i really enjoyed this instantly felt fun and more confident with that extra turn in over the 997.1 but straight line acceleration really did feel dull, GTS seem rare as also only one i liked which went a few weeks back. Next i tried a 718 GTS4.0 i have to say underwhelmed with this for different reasons, suspension felt so soft, engine was ok way more torque over 981S of course but oh it just didn't feel sporty enough for me, needed more noise and oh my how tall are those gears, the 981 felt more 'chuckable' and fun, is this a weight thing i dont know. For the money so close to a Spyder it just didn't feel value, i woulda preffered the change and bought a 981S ... almost. I originally started looking for a 981 Spyder as i believe they are lighter and more of an 'event' each time to you drive, but they seem so rare i may be in an OAP home by the time a suitable one is available for me. There is also the concern about manual. PDK option v manual? Whilst i love my manual C2S i do observe at times whilst being a competent driver, sim driver and karter, i find both hands on the wheel always preferable, therefore manual whilst nice potentially a X% of brain occupancy used up on distraction from driving car. Therefore i would somewhat eb to PDK, so close because there's elements of my targa being PDK i find dull and elements of wacking through gears in 997 i love. A friend of mine has a 718 GT4 its too agressive for me and a hard top. So here i am at my decision process: I like the Spyder, least it hasn't got a spoiler, the rear diffuser is a bit ott for me, as is the very angular amost Japanese/ Jag F type look to the front but i feel on paper it's my ultimate car, or possibly the 981 is as i dont really want need 400bhp, however 981s i dont think i will ever get what i want spec wise. Its a car i think i will like i won't love it or look back at it like my Targa or if i owned a 997.1 GT3 but i know it will make me smile ear to ear driving it. I am looking at something like this: 718 Spyder + PDK, Adjustable seats (not bucket) Bose or Better, heated wheel, Agate or Black with Platinum silver wheels. I have a similar spec one which I love. Don't think Agate was ever on the menu. Crayon and Arctic were. GT Silver also looks good Other options to think seriously about would be dual climate control, carbon pack, multifunction steering wheel. What about GT4? A friend of mine has a 718 GT4 its too agressive looking for me let alone the RS omg and a hard top. I'm thinking buy on condition and then resolve the spec afterwards.... The ability to add or remove parts is considerable, not withstanding there are spec items that are not so easy.... I've really enjoyed and still enjoy the personalisation journey... https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... the rarity of the 981 and 987 also appeal to me.... but then I don't swap cars out very often, I'm always looking for the "keeper"

718 Spyder is clearly shaper to drive without being harsh. When I drove both, it was quite clear even from an A road. The 718 felt better put together and I only have 3k miles on mine but the gearshift felt more fluid than a 981 with 15k miles.

Also toyed with the idea of selling my well spec'd 981 BGTS & assumed the 718 GTS would be the obvious route to go. The more I think about changing the more I think I'd really need to buy something a little different. I do also enjoy PDK & open top motoring so that leaves me with one of two choices that'll cost me a considerable sum to change.

Aside from very limited edition cars I can't think of many cars that'll have softer depreciation which is an added bonus of ownership They're a lot of GT car for the money. What else can one buy that's as good an all round package? Possibly 4.0 GTS but the Spyder feels just that bit more special (I've owned both) Best of luck Thank you and much appreciated, the other option is a 570s but the running costs are on a different level I think you’ll be very surprised

Welcome, and yes a well spec'd 981 GTS was also a car i really wanted, an Agate Gray one recently snapped up i think RPM Teknik i wish i had been more proactive beautiful cars too. Anyway adding an update into my exploration of the 718. I dropped into a Porsche dealer today to test a White 718 Spyder in manual. I must admit i went there thinking it would confirm i wanted a PDK, being a very miserable cold wet day in the UK too i thought that would add to the need for both hands on the wheel etc. Ok i was wrong. Despite being a honking wet day this thing was just epic, the clutch felt easy not heavy at all, and the shifting beautiful, people mention the tall gearing, didn't bother me at all. If anything it's good because you're not too busy having to short shift taking a hand off the wheel so much. My last drive was the 718 GTS4.0 which i mentioned felt underwhelming, sure it was pretty quick but that was it. This thing felt so razor precision sharp like i felt in the 997.1 GT3 but with added balance from the mid engine and way more confidence braking in the wet etc, very predictable handling, Being a mid engined newbie this may sound normal to some of you but a revelation to me. Loved it. It also felt much lighter and nimbler despite being marginally heavier than the GTS 4.0 which really surprised me. For sure my 992.1 Targa 4S being 4wd makes things much easier accelerating and cornering in the wet, the Spyder communicated much more so where you are down on grip you are up in seat of the pants feel, and the balance, and the accuracy of that steering. So in summary i felt more connected with the manual, and i think on reflection the reason i dont feel in so control in my 997.1 manual is more to do with the shiny seats and large shiny wheel etc not the manual itself. I love the alcantara wheel and seats in spyder helps to lock you in. And the 718 Spyder as others have said i would say arguably the best car ive ever driven, but i haven't driven a 981, which i feel could be even better (not about out n out speed i mean fun)

As you saw snapped up fast. Interesting thoughts on the 718 Spyder . I personally prefer the looks of the 718 Spyder over the 981 and of course you get the larger brakes from the GT4 & the same running gear I think. The 981 has the sound however so it depends how important that is to an owner. Less noise and the GT4 brakes might make it the better occasional track car too. Quite a decent comparison by RPM Technic on both models . Ultimately I think I'd go for the 718 over the 981 and forgo the sound . The roof 'Faff' i think I could get over although might likely mean I'd not have the roof as as much incase of a sudden and unexpected downpour. Question is what the net difference would be for me to change out of the 981 GTS PDK ( very similar to the agate car) and into a 718 be it manual or PDK. https://youtu.be/-toM_sdpIHA?si=mU9uKPwWwt1iYtc6 Edited by Esquire on Sunday 23 November 11:57 Edited by Esquire on Sunday 23 November 12:10 Edited by Esquire on Sunday 23 November 12:11 Edited by Esquire on Sunday 23 November 12:12

Ideal world 718 rear lights but with 981 bottom valance and center exhausts/sound. And yes the front end on the 718 and brakes feel perfect i love how accurate the steering feels, but i haven't driven a 981. Same issue i have re colour, is i want an Agate Grey 718 but not possilbe. I was eyein'g up a black but it's possibly just too much for me. So ebbing towards the arctic Gray with plat silver wheels. Problem is how many are out there with Bermister stereo. How long to wait...

Mine has Bose which isn't bad, and I upgraded via a MOST 150 and other stuff which is easily reversible, which gives a decent increase in quality and volume Have to say that I agree with Quickmoose. Find one that's a good base for what you want (colour, seats, dual climate), and if you're inclined to you can change or upgrade quite a lot Best of luck

It’s extremely good and way better than the standard or the Bose options. You really appreciate it on the Spyder as it’s a noisy cabin and you need the extra grunt. I found that the Burmester was spot on for music and podcasts right up to an 80MPH cruise top down. In my opinion a well specified 718 Spyder is one of the best cars Porsche have ever made.

I suspect over time the current £55k price gap between early Spyder / Spyder RS may continue to gradually narrow. I was therefore inclined to take a manual as it’s not available in the RS.

I've been caught in the Spyder during a shower and it's possible to get a move on and put the roof up. The SRS, no chance, best to take a raincoat and get the dehumidifier on it later. The noise is very loud but only on full throttle. Stock Spyder is too quiet so when you drive them back to back, the difference is stark.

How long to wait... Agate 981 here in case useful https://cscexchange.co.uk/dl/listings

The SRS, no chance, best to take a raincoat and get the dehumidifier on it later. The noise is very loud but only on full throttle. Stock Spyder is too quiet so when you drive them back to back, the difference is stark. It’s really nowhere near as bad as all the videos have made it out to be. For 99% of the time, forget the rear window section. If you need the main roof on, it’s about 1 minute start to finish. Also driving the SRS in Bimini mode is a joy in itself. Rolling it up to take it off is a bit more fiddly but not because it’s difficult, just because I’m always careful to fold it to minimise any risk of creases. The advantage is, if your taking the roof off your not panicking about getting wet lol.

You really appreciate it on the Spyder as it s a noisy cabin and you need the extra grunt. I found that the Burmester was spot on for music and podcasts right up to an 80MPH cruise top down. In my opinion a well specified 718 Spyder is one of the best cars Porsche have ever made. Did you ever get to drive a 981 Spyder for a comparison? Did you have manual or PDK cars ? TIA No never had a 981 Spyder, only a Cayman R which was a lovely car. Much nicer sound and steering feel. As for manual and PDK 718 Spyders, one of each. I personally prefer the PDK but it’s a highly personal issue and there is no right or wrong answer here. I had the manual when they first came out then replaced it with a PDK when they became available. Edited by Esquire on Sunday 23 November 16:53

I will jump back into Spyder ownership at some point.

I had previously looked at the 4RS but not sure it would match my intended usage on roads/occasional track day although no doubt a phenomenal track car. A quick search of the classifieds suggests 40k uplift for a PDK Spyder . Think I'll leave it for now safe in the knowledge I already have a great car . Find one that's a good base for what you want (colour, seats, dual climate), and if you're inclined to you can change or upgrade quite a lot Best of luck Would be interested to hear what you've done to the Bose system. I upgraded my dash tweeters to the Burmester ones which made a nice difference, but at 85 with the roof up it's still too boomy

Upgrading the tweeters was easy - I've got a leather dash too, just a trim tool under the edge and the vent pops off. I think I had to slice a small part off the tweeter connector to get it to fit to the car plug (think making a T into an L shape), but apart from that was very easy - the pins themselves on the connector are the same

Some great reviews/input here. I was lucky enough to buy my 718 Spyder as new with only 34 delivery miles about 18 months ago I was trading in a 991GT3 and was very nervous that I was making a mistake (esp in the sound department) From the first drive .. zero regrets.. even running it in, it felt much much more suited to the type of B roads I enjoy driving and being mid engined was SO much more confidence inspiring on damp twisty roads .. fabulous. Mine has Burmester, which as other have said is simply amazing, not just volume at speed roof down, but also clarity .. it s such a worthwhile option. I have the manual box, which must be about the best box out there, I ve had S2000, MX5s which are generally rated for having great precise manuals I ve also had a Caterham with the famed 6 speed . But this is just another world of perfection, and if you desire.. with the push of a button, you have auto blip on the way down which is heaven! Roof is super quick and easy. Storage in the car is massive. I m not sure a better car exists for £ and use case of wk end blasts or euro hoons. Services every 2 years, reasonable warranty from OPC defo a lot to love! The noise is a little muted but honestly not bad if you put a valve controller on .. or simply unplug the vacuum pipes, so the valves are open all the time - this gives a decent enough rumble. I opted for a JCR titanium un silenced pipe, and to say that transformed the car is an understatement don t miss the GT3 noise now either. Gearing is fine, and the car is totally different to the GT3 - I felt unless I got a couple of red line pulls when I had it out - it was wasted miles/journey, whereas in the spyder, the engine doesn’t need that to make great progress, nor sound good .. its just a fab ROAD car .. Yep, agree with all that. I also came to a Spyder from a GT3 (997) and no regrets. I've combined an exhaust valve controller with BMC air filters and quite happy with the noise. One thing further I would add is how good I think the ride is for such a focussed car wearing Cup 2 tyres (which will go when I've worn them out), or maybe I'm just used to hard riding cars I also agree that it's a brilliant road car, it was awesome fun in the Swiss Alps last year.

Mine is under warranty but I'm working on the basis that if/when PADM fails for example, I'm hoping they won't be pulling the 100% standard exhaust apart looking for a valve controller. Not sure how that would work for the JCR system mentioned above though, I get the impression responses from different OPC's wouldn't necessarily be consistent anyway in that one might ignore the exhaust if it's nothing to do with the failure, whereas another will take advantage of any opportunity to refuse a warranty claim.

The car I bought was from an Indi and my local OPC didn't even mention it when i wanted a Porsche warranty.

No issue with JCR on mine, been into OPC…. Was same for my GT3 which also had a back box… Be totally different if you went for OAPs or manifolds…. Obv of there was a warranty issue that could or likely to be caused by exhaust etc.. I’m sure would be a different story, but it’s not something I lose sleep over…. It’s only a back box… and honestly it makes the car for me anyway.

It is very tempting! I had a JCR on my GT3 as well, which also sounded epic!

do it !!! totally transformed the car for me (in a good way) are you in CSC ? there are plenty on there with them (and other back boxes) and also some that preferred the OAP route.. you occasionally get 2nd hand pipes for sale on it too

Well ive now test driven a PDK and Manual 718 of similar specs. Such a close call, but for me personaly argh i think i will still go for manual. I have this weird feeling with PDK that it's not connected like a manual gearbox is but i guess it is nowadays not like a torque converter! Manual shifting in the PDK did feel good though but just a bit too much like my sim racer, and hey i do currently have a 992.1 Pdk and a 997.1 manual so am using both regularly already. One other observation was the Bose in this 718 was pretty good actually, not far off the bose in my 992.1 so i wouldn't be too hung up on my ideal car not having burmester, although i haven't actually heard it, but Bose cranked up with roof down was still pretty good, i like a good beat with Anjuna style EDM and it was pretty good. Next up is to start closing in on that perfect spec 718, so excited.

I took a punt buying mine going into the Autumn two years ago at what some would say was a strong price but I've yet to see one come up since that has the minimum spec combination that I wanted (Arctic, Black, Crayon or Silver, PDK, 18 ways, Bose, PCCBs, dual aircon, carbon, heated multifunction wheel). And depreciation at the moment is gentle relative to other cars

POST 79Original post

If you don't want buckets, one thing worth mentioning is that the 18-way seats sit higher than the normal ones. The first owner of my car went to town on the spec - leather steering wheel surround, Exclusive Design fuel cap, PTS, full PPF etc etc - and he spec'd the basic seats. I met him a few months ago and asked why; being able to sit lower was the reason. I've never once felt the basic seats are lacking in anything - done 5 hours straight in them with no issue. For reference I'm a skinny, lanky 6'4

POST 80Original post

The 18 way seats are a lot more comfortable than the standard, basic seats but you do sit much lower in the basic seats. I prefer the lower seating position nine times out of ten, but the extra adjustability can be better on a long journey. It all comes down to your own personal preferences.

It is very well priced and at a dealer with an excellent reputation, but it’s not a great colour and lack of buckets is also a factor. Though it has the eighteen way seats which are extremely comfortable. Could still be a good purchase for the spring and summer though.

Looking at these 718 Spyder, some examples seem to have the basic a/c rather than the optional climate control. I appreciate it's a convertible, with the emphasis of spec now appearing as important as the condition and provenance of the car, is the lack of climate control a big issue for resale?

The current configurator shows dual-zone climate control as standard, but has it always been so?. I've seen Boxsters described as having a/c (or not even mentioned at all), when you can clearly see two temperature control knobs.

I think mines got climate, but tbh, it’s a convertible, the roof should be down when it’s sunny, failing that if it’s really hot then cold coming out of air vents is cold coming out of air vents imho - ac will never be incredible on a car with a canvas roof.

POST 93Original post

Chaps, I get the convertible thing... I have always had a convertible car, without a/c and haven't used the roof in the last 30 years! I would prefer a Spyder with a/c delete... etc... The question was, how fickle is the market to spec, do buyers insist on the almost pointless (in this car) full climate? If I were to buy one, I don't know how long I would keep it for? Should I move it on, would a standard a/c non climate car end up being a liability to sell?.

With regard to the climate control question, mine has it but the first thing I do after starting the car with the roof down is press the "a/c" button so it's off. Can't see the point of running an aircon compressor constantly trying to "control the climate" when it's fighting a losing battle against nature...

POST 98Original post

Without experiencing it myself I would have agreed, but since running my Boxster through this Summer there has been a few of the hottest days where having the AC wafting cool air around you is a pleasant sensation. The dual zone climate makes this no bother at all.

It's a nonsense that cars this price didn't have climate as standard. I wouldn't be without on any modern car, set the temp and leave it. The fancy-pants lights are IMO not needed (I have them on my 2021 Spyder). I never drive it in the dark. On a daily, they would be very handy but not a weekend sports car

With regard to the climate control question, mine has it but the first thing I do after starting the car with the roof down is press the "a/c" button so it's off. Can't see the point of running an aircon compressor constantly trying to "control the climate" when it's fighting a losing battle against nature... Agree. In 5 years I’ve used air con once

The best thing to do is drive a car with the different seats in. Can i ask about buckets, what about in the winter, don't you miss them not being heated? I found heated 18ways crucial in my prev Targa for winter roof down driving. adding heated pads within the LWB seats is but the work of moment ..or some moments.

POST 104Original post

Do you have any links to how to fit these heated pads into buckets and where they wire into. Thanks

POST 105Original post

Struggling to find the one on youtube.... but essentially the methodology is the same as the ones you can find there. One cable to solid earth, the power gets connected to a +ve at the back of the fuse panel by your feet.

POST 106Original post

I think someone on CSC has made a control unit that mounts on the LWBs to make using the pads easier, and the whole set look neat

Then don’t mention it to OPC. If you do they’re obligated to tell you it’s a warranty problem. If you don’t you’re almost certainly fine unless the fitting causes a problem to a warrantied part / issue It all varies from OPC to OPC but that’s how it generally works in my experience

For what it's worth, like a couple of other people I tested a Cayman GTS before going for a 718 Spyder. To be honest the GTS just didn't do anything for me and didn't feel that quick ( had an Alpine A110 at the time). The Spyder I love and feels ( and sounds ) so much better.

TIA I can give a pov as I've had both, PDK in each instance, Boxster not Cayman. Never drove them back to back, and had an 18 month gap between the Boxster GTS and the Spyder, which I still have Both are great cars. The Boxster was a very well sorted, well built and fun to drive sportscar. Easily fast enough for the UK roads that I drive, and could be used as a daily very easily. The Spyder shares a lot of what the Boxster has but it's just that bit more special to drive, which also means a few compromises. The ride is firmer but I can live with it (unlike the 992 GT3 I previously had), and one can feel the suspension working a bit more. In town the hard ride can irritate on poor surfaces but when you're out of town and using the car as intended, then the damping is superb. Noticeably better than the softer Boxster. Similarly, I may be imagining it but although both cars steer fantastically vs most cars on the road, I'm sure the Spyder has just that more grain to it The engines sound the same as it's the same unit. My Spyder feels a bit faster I think, but suspect that's because the engine's now well run in and has loosened up a fair bit, as much as it is to do with the few extra BHP The Spyder's hood is manual and takes me c.45 second to remove on my own, and it's a PITA if you want to put something in the rear boot as that means unlatching the hood. With the Boxster you just press a button. the Boxster's hood is double or triple skinned whereas the Spyder's is single. In the latter, one can hear conversations of those nearby outside the car which means it's noisier generally at all speeds Obviously the Spyder as much more striking with the roof on or not. It always gets a lot of warm attention in a way that the Boxster didn't. Some people may like it, others may not One has to take care not to ground the Spyder's splitter. Not an issue with the Boxster Both cars are outstanding. As expected the Spyder's noticeably more special but comes with the aforementioned compromises. I think the Spyder will hold its value better in the long term, although I'm not planning on selling mine ever Best of luck with the search Edited by crystalmethod on Thursday 16th April 11:59

I currently own a very nice 981 BGTS but some years ago had a 981 GT4 when they first hit the showrooms. As good as my GTS is it's no match for the handling precision the GT4 had so your above points make sense. The natural step for me would I guess be a 718 BGTS for ease however given I still remember the steering sharpness the GT4 had I'd want to get that feel back again. My car is under P warranty so very much peace of mind knowing any serious issues are covered. In the back of my mind however is knowing that I really only now have another 3/4 of warranty security. Would therefore make sense for me to make the leap in advance of the 15 year mark. Edited to add I'm a full PDK convert having ( in my younger years ) been a manual diehard. I will just add to this as i am now a proud owner of a 718 Spyder with PDK. I drove a 981 BoxsterS and was sadly underwelmed with the performance despite the handling which felt promising. I then test drove the 718 GTS4.0 PDK which i have to say just felt dull also, the engine was ok, but the car still felt like a sports cabrio at best, not detracting from how balanced they are! Then the Spyder is another league, turn in accuracy etc, insane, it's so pointy it has that accuracy only a GT3's posseses. It feels light and nimble, suspection firm enough but not too hard. Hard to fault it. Bucket seats are perfection also, and i feared they wouldnt be confortable being middle aged too, no i love them.

I think you would get much better value out of it with a Spyder RS to be honest where the roof is much more of a faff.

I'm very much considering selling my BGTS 981 which I do like as it's very easy to live with for my weekend ( occasional mid week) use . However, I do miss the 'sharpness' of a GT style car but equally now value open top motoring. Lots of convenience with the BGTS & have thought the 718 BGTS would be the obvious next step although not sure it's what I'm really looking for . Lucky enough to have a budget to go for the SRS ( if I sell my 981) but wonder if the 718 reg Spyder is all I need given my usage plus some RS roof faff . So guess my question is , has anyone moved from the convenience of the BGTS or the reg Spyder 718 to the RS?

So guess my question is , has anyone moved from the convenience of the BGTS or the reg Spyder 718 to the RS? I had a BGTS and now have a 718 Spyder (see post further up). I was very keen to get into an SRS when word got out that it was happening, and was offered a build slot. Prior to committing I tried an SRS out, having read all the launch reviews It was a fantastic car to drive. More fun than the GT3 I'd previously owned, but the noise when on full chat was deafening. My right ear was ringing for an hour or so after a ten minute hard drive. Many have said that it isn't too bad - and that you control the volume with your right foot - but the point of these cars is to 9k them a lot, and at 7-9k it's uncomfortably loud I also tried out the hood to see how it compared with the 718. I can do the 718 one on my own in 45 seconds. I think the SRS is 2 mins min solo. Think one would put the hood down in a BGTS for any drive above 3 mins, and for the 718 Spyder for any above 30 mins. In the SRS it'd be 3 hours But all of that's my pov, and others here will disagree - which I respect. I haven't felt the need for more power or performance in my 718, but if Porsche had made the SRS slightly less noisy and the hood less of a sh*t show I'd have had one in a heartbeat There have been a lot that have been sold after a few hundred miles. I don't think that's only because of the overs market cooling, and do think that many (including me) have found it to be too hardcore for them except for short, Sunday morning drives. Kudos to Porsche for building it though. Suggest you try one out before committing

POST 137Original post

I did the 'collar' mod on my 718 Spyder to keep the exhaust open at all times. I did one long trip and reverted it back .. damaged my hearing more - tinnitus is a horrible things once you get it. Would love an SRS too .. but the noise and the lack of a manual will see me with 800rpm less !

POST 138Original post

For what it's worth I think the BGTS is a truly magnificent car. I bought the last manual that came to the UK, carmine with dark blue interior. It is such a wonderfully tactile car. I definitely prefer it to the Carrera T which, while an absolutely terrific car, doesn't have the BGTS's magic. I have had the T on a long term loan and loved it. But when it goes, tomorrow back to its owner I won't be buying another whereas the BGTS is a keeper and I mean forever.

POST 139Original post

I have a 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 and a 718 Spyder RS. I keep the Cayman up in the Highlands - it suits some of the roads and (particularly) the weather more than the SRS. Despite being a great car, it is a pale shadow of the SRS in those ways which make a car feel really special. I think ultimately the choice comes down to how much it fits your usage patterns. There's no point having a car that never leaves the garage, and as discussed in another thread, I think for many the compromises of the SRS means it is at least car number 3 in a multi vehicle fleet. All that said if I had to sell one, the Cayman would go first.

From my point of view that's a daft cost to change. If you've had your Spyder a good while so would like a change, would love that proper GT3 engine with the 9k red line, love the fabulous looks with the extra carbon, prefer PDK to manual, then £50k cost to change sounds pretty reasonable. Would anyone here know anything about the blue Spyder at OPC Perth? I seem to be quite attracted to it.. Not sure how the spec adds up (been out of Porsche since my 987 Spyder 12 years ago..) Also - seats. Buckets comfortable or a necessity? I notice in the blurb about the warranty - it says a 2 year warranty as optional, whereas I thought approved used came with 2 year warranty as standard? I’ll be coming out of an Evora 410 Sport and quite fancy something a little more refined..but there’s no denying I’d miss the Lotus. Thanks

Thanks Buckets look great and hold one in more than the standard or 18 way comfort seats do. The only movement is up / down and forward / back. There's no recline adjustment. Some people find them to be a bit upright for their liking, but one can buy brackets to tilt them back a bit The 18 ways of the Perth car sit one a bit higher in the car, and are very adjustable. They'll hold you just fine on the road, but the buckets feel more special and are better if you're planning on taking it on a track The 18 ways are heated, whereas the buckets aren't unless one installs a 3rd party system. Very early 718 Spyders had heated buckets Some people prefer buckets, some the 18 ways. There's no wrong answer. It's definitely worth trying both before deciding Broadly the Perth car looks pretty well specced with 2 zone climate control, Bose, multi-function wheel, PDLS lights and carbon all being popular options

POST 153Original post

Thanks for the replies. I’d need to try the buckets - my old Spyder had the comfort seats as I found those era buckets a bit too tight. I’d prefer to have buckets as I think they suit the car, but all other things being equal I think I’m happy to go without if need be.

Oddly Perth called me about their car just after I'd done my 718 GTS Manual vs the last (I believe) brand new Spyder RS (non WP, comfort seats) car from Mayfair, a switch that felt costly at the time but which, having done a thousand miles in the RS in a week I truly feel over the moon with. It's a more special car than I could possibly have imagined. I got the distinct impression they were keen to move it on, they sent me a video on it etc without even getting my response to them offering it etc and I barely know them. Lovely looking car. Good luck!

Good luck! Good to hear you're enjoying the new steed with positive feedback. I had a test drive of a 718 Spyder ( non RS) this last weekend & have to say slightly disappointed with the noise. I guess easily solvable with an aftermarket exhaust as the rest of the car felt great.

Is that a fairly punchy price for the mileage, or is it just me?

POST 158Original post

Just before Christmas, I paid £5k less for a 2022 PTS car with similar mileage, with buckets. So I think it's a seasonal variation thing.

718 Spyder noise can be improved for £20 just by clamping the flaps open. Easy job and no downsides as long as you want some noise all of the time. New exhaust can of course offer big improvements but cost / warranty may put some off.

Other than when 'on it', I think the sound is absolutely woeful

Even with the button pressed the flaps stay closed below (I think) 4000rpm It’s a very worthwhile mod although it can be achieved for even less than £20, . I just popped a grub screw into both vac lines, M6 I think it was, and put them back on. This has exactly the same effect in it keeps the flaps open all the time. It makes the car feel nicer as the exhaust sound is linear with the throttle actuation. I did it on all three of mine, 1 GT4 and 2 Spyders, I never took them out either, nobody ever said a word.

Did the collar 'hack' .. too loud for me .. ringing ears after. Sports exhaust is below 2k and above 4k I believe. Quiet for drive-by regs.

Anyone know of any off-market Spyder RSs for sale? Preferably PTS and low miles.

Budget wise, depends on spec, mileage etc. I had actually bought the yellow one at OPC Aberdeen direct from the seller (SOR). Deposit in, arranging collection etc - then he tells me, sorry, bit of a problem the OPC sold it. WTAF. I think he deliberately kept it on, to see if a better offer came through. OPC absolute shysters and wouldn't step down, even though legally I was ahead of them. Nice car - £163k list, PPF etc.

Lovely PTS Viola metallic for sale in Teeside.

Nice car - £163k list, PPF etc. Mines grey, but has orange stich interior, mag wheels in black and loads of carbon - nearly 170k spec - just saw it and thought wow I’d normally never consider grey…..

POST 176Original post

Couldn't agree more. Never go grey but that car, even without WP looks awesome. I adore this car!

POST 177Original post

When I bought my RS, I originally went to the OPC to look at a used Vandium (spelling?) grey with gold wheels and the half painted bonnet. It really looked well and blended subtle and bling very well. If it hadn’t been for the dealer to be very very keen to sell the new racing yellow one I bought, I’d have snapped it up.

Another Viola at OPC Colchester. Asking 145k with 5k miles but lots of decent spec although definitely on the high side price wise I'm guessing. Still , if you have the want and the means why not !

Just bought a 718 Spyder, had it delivered Tuesday afternoon and got out in it for a couple of hours yesterday. Guards red with black wheels, 2 owners, PDK, 6000 miles, comfort seats rather than buckets it’s immaculate with barely a stone chip. Looks fab I loved driving it yesterday getting used to PDK (all other weekend toys have been manual) and it is rather quiet, I am going to drive it over the summer before deciding if I want to do anything about that, I will probably just leave it tbh. Seems very nicely screwed together just like a 2.0 PDK 718 Boxster I used as a daily driver for a couple of years. Overall a great driving package and far more suited for future planned road trips than my old 997.2 GT3, so I am comfortable I have made the swap.

How quiet are these? My 987 Spyder made a lovely noise with the PSE - are these similar?
