I found I usually drove my 996.2 C2 in auto, but used the wheel buttons to change down a couple of gears as I slowed for a corner or roundabout - usually slows car enough not to have to use the brakes, and you get to hear the exhaust burble

Suggestion

You can either drive the car through the gears in manual mode (on the steering wheel) or in auto by moving the gear stick to auto position,I’m pretty sure if you hit the buttons on the wheel in auto it will still change gear

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

sorry all if the question is seemingly stupid or basic! when you put the tiptronic transmission on, do the "gears" automatically change or does the driver have to do that with the steering wheel controls? thankyou for any advices  : )

POST 2Original post

You can either drive the car through the gears in manual mode (on the steering wheel) or in auto by moving the gear stick to auto position,I’m pretty sure if you hit the buttons on the wheel in auto it will still change gear

POST 3Original post

Yep, if in auto, activating the wheel switches will engage manual mode for 8 seconds (at least for a 996, not sure about a 997 though).  After this period car resumes automatic mode

There are no stupid questions if you don't know the answer mate. Tiptronic is bloody good fun!

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 304738

ok, but in auto mode, do the gears change on their own without the driver flicking the steering wheel controls?

POST 8Original post

No worries I’m guessing you are looking at buying one? Auto/tip or manual it’s a Porsche you’ll love the pleasure it will give you.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

yes, marty looking at getting an autotip

I found I usually drove my 996.2 C2 in auto, but used the wheel buttons to change down a couple of gears as I slowed for a corner or roundabout - usually slows car enough not to have to use the brakes, and you get to hear the exhaust burble 🙂 Also may use to change down for overtaking, although box will usually change down quick enough if you put the boot in hard enough.  Then normal auto operation resumes. I also drive my wife's PDK 981 the same way, although paddles are nicer to use than buttons or rocker switches and PDK is super quick compared to the Tip....

POST 12Original post

Easy fix for those rocker switches. Some small mods and a set of Mercedes paddles seems to be a good mod

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 305086

Yep, was going to do that, just never got around to it, and car for sale now.

POST 14Original post

I'm becoming that lazy mate, even using the rocker switches will be in the too hard basket if I owned one
