My wife’s Boxster 25 needs a couple of rear tyres, and as the fronts don’t have much life, thinking about changing from the current PZero’s.

Suggestion

More and more owners are starting to move away from the Michelins as they get to try other cars with different set ups that feel sharper.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My wife’s Boxster 25 needs a couple of rear tyres, and as the fronts don’t have much life, thinking about changing from the current PZero’s. Never used on track so just general daily driving. Have Michelins on my other cars, so tempted with changing to Michelins on the Boxster. Any recommendations?

POST 2Original post

N rated PS4S if going Michelin, the non N rated ones are really soft and lose all the steering feel. Bridgestone Potenza Sport EVO are really good. Continental Sport Contact 7 in the XL is also really good too. The new Pirelli P Zero 5 is meant to be a really good too. I think any will be better than what you have now which really are a poor tyre unless the weather is really hot and dry. My choice would be... 1st Bridgestone 2nd Conti 3rd PS4S N rated.

POST 3Original post

I'll need 4 new tyres by the end of the year and I'll be sticking with the pirellis and I'm hoping the PZ5 will be out in 20 inch by then. Never had any issues with lack of grip in the cold or wet and my pressures are set at 32psi when cold. Several have reported a lack of turn in feel on the MPS4S as the side wall is slightly 'squishy'. I've had both and, in honesty, I prefer the PZ4. You've probably opened a can of worms now though.

POST 4Original post

PS4S Michelins on mine and probably wouldn't have anything else as they are pretty good all rounders Don't like Pirellis, I find they understeer in the wet.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks all. Have Michelins on my M3 and have always been pleased with those so think will put them on the Boxster.

Just be aware that alot of people, myself included, think they absolutely ruin the steering feel and completely lose the sharp turn in you should have on a Porsche. The N rated version brings 'some' of this back, with a much firmer side wall and the inside and outside 1/3 of the tyre using a much firmer compound than the non Porsche N rated version. However, the Bridgestones and the Continentals bring the steering feel back in spades. More and more owners are starting to move away from the Michelins as they get to try other cars with different set ups that feel sharper. They are still a good tyre, one of the best, dry grip, wet grip, comfort and wear rate, but, no steering feel and this is a Porsche where that matters.

I'll admit I've not tried Continentals for a long time and the last set of Bridgestones I had were on a Mini Clubman JCW which was sold last year but I still feel the N rated Michelins give better feel and confidence over them and the Pirelli's the last set of which I had a couple of years ago. I guess we're all different but maybe I need to try something different next time some tyres need replacing.

I agree with that, the earlier Pirellis were darn right sketchy when it got cold or wet, god forbid both. That is why I won't comment on the new PZ5, I get a few are saying it is the new performance tyre to have, but my trust has almost been broken based on previous experience of them on my 911.
