Planned this for a while every since I picked up my new to me CPO '13
Carrera
S in trade for my '14
Cayman S
both in Agate Gray. Car was nicely optioned with
SPASM
,
PDK
, and a few other goodies but lacked two things specifically I'd wanted. Those were
PSE
and the moonroof option. Thought the car was rather sedate with the OEM regular mufflers and kinda dark inside with the standard sunroof so after a bit of research and also quite a bit of Q&A between my dealer's Master
Porsche
Technician,
Porsche
, and a few aftermarket vendors...I added:
1) OEM
Porsche
Moonroof retrofit
2)
PSE
console and vaccum tube retrofit
3)
PSE
programming for #2
4) Rennline Front Bumper Grilles [black]
5) OEM
Porsche
Center Radiator kit
6)
Akrapovic
Ti Catback Sport Performance
Exhaust
7) MACarbon CF interior trim retrofit (dash & center console)
8) IPD 991 Pleneum
9) 991.2 GT Multifunction Steering wheel
10) 991.2 Steering wheel Airbag
All of the above except item #7 were done by my dealer service dept while I handled the CF interior retrofit myself as a DIY (took me about 30 mins over an evening beef along with re-packing my OEM silver trim). The
GT4
991.2 wheel does directly bolt on and work with the 991.1 generation cars...HOWEVER the multi-function controls do no code and the dealer couldn't get the new wheel controls to recognize and activate/work on the tester. So they replaced my old OEM wheel back on the car. Options include A) obtaining the 991.2 multi-function control module and seeing if that can be installed to control the wheel and also talk to the car's as well OR B) getting either a 991.1 Sports Design wheel + MF stalk or a 991.2 GT wheel minus controls and adding the MF stalk from the 991.1. Technician is not sure if option A) will work and I am willing to try IF the 991.2 module is returnable/refundable. Otherwise its likely option B as the OEM 991.1 MF wheel is just an eyesore to me. Not attractive at all. My old
981 Cayman
S was ordered with the Sports Design wheel for a reason! If so will just sell the 991.2 MF wheel and airbag since they were special order items.
Must say MACarbon's quality and service was outstanding! Even included a tool kit to remove the parts and a CF cleaning kit also. Top notch parts and quality for all. My AZ dealer did a great job on the car and I was pleased with the result and even the overall cost...until the car was hit by an SUV driver 3 days later during a trip to Las Vegas while leaving a casino parking garage...but that's another story and post. Didn't get to take many pics post upgrade for you guys due to the trip then accident [vehicle is now at the body shop] but will do so when I get it back out of the body shop...hopefully soon.
Cobb Accessport
v3 coming up
next
. Maybe swap back to
Carrera
S Satin Platinum wheels from my current 20" ones. I had them on my previous '14
Cayman S
and loved them. That was a great car!
Wow, I am surprised the dealer installed all those parts for you. I guess the car is not CPO? I always assumed dealers would simply refuse to knowingly install aftermarket performance parts and instead push
Porsche
's own catalogue of overpriced crap.
Also, how was the sunroof retrofitted?
Congrats on personalizing the car to your desires. Are you planning to have the
Cobb
tuned or use their standard software?
Car is CPO'd and will continue to be so and honored. Got that in writing from the Service Mgr prior to installation. Didn't push
PSE
and actually master
Porsche
technician for the dealership did my car himself and commented it was one of the best sounding aftermarket installs he's done. It should at the cost of the
Akrapovic
but they do hold their value and are worth it sound wise in my opinion. A touch above
PSE
in quality and sound without being obnoxiously too loud like AWE. Sound is great if its quality sound that fits the car I say. But no they didn't push any
Porsche
only options on me or warn of denied warranties and I asked/engaged specifically before proceeding and consulted with them every step of the way. Believe me my service guy has a stack of emails saved in his files to verify what we were doing and what worked and didn't and his advice. I have that copy too! LOL
Otherwise as almost all parts used were OEM
Porsche
Parts ordered thru the dealership other than the
Akrapovic exhaust
and IPD. Those items could possibly void any related failed parts but the dealer would have to prove said OEM parts failed due to these particular aftermarket parts. With the
exhaust
that's almost non-existent...most folks that have issues have added
headers
or some other component. The
IPD plenum
upgrade is just a direct bolt replacement and really affect no other parts of the engine mechanically other than improved airflow and is very similar to the aluminum plenum which the
GT3
models use. So no issues there really are expected and my dealer has done quote a few especially for guys who track their 991's.
PSE
retrofit=non factor as OEM parts and retrofit instructions and coding was done straight out of the
Porsche
technical manual. Center radiator upgrade same thing as the
PSE
retrofit.
Sunroof was swapped out with the OEM moon-roof from
Porsche
. Ordered using
Porsche
parts number; is a direct bolt in replacement. Only thing is you will lose the motorized sunshade option that the OEM moon-roof option has. Unless you really want to spend some $$ and have them open up your roof to get at the sunroof tracks/motors and remove those and re-install the OEM sunroof and motors/tracks components. Not worth it. Add 5% nano-ceramic tint and it allows visibility out but significantly blocks heat into the car. Sweet...So I have the best of both worlds there. Don't really miss the rolling sunshade option as my wife has in her
Cayenne
w/panoramic roof. Mine actually blocks heat better than her panoramic moon roof!
Likely will get local shop to do a custom tune to my car's file to go with the OTS one from Cobbs.
OP, lots of work. wow! Sunroof exchange is interesting
No. Don't forget warranty work is paid by PCNA. If the parts fail and cause say engine damage, the consumer pays the service dept. So the Service dept won't care. They get paid by PCNA or You. Money is money.
But with mods done and systems which I address/tackled its very unlikely that you'll get an
exhaust
failure from a cat back system. Maybe a CEL from a MAF from the
IPD plenum
upgrade in some models (my
981S
was one of them) but otherwise the mods I chose were tastefully done to avoid such a fate. Realize that some dealerships do penalize owners for ANYTHING done not by
Porsche
or by them!
Very intested in doing the Panoramic Roof retrofit! Please let me know about costs and difficulty of installing? And what would it take to install the motors to enable the motorizes sunshade.
Not panoramic roof retrofit but moonroof retrofit. Just to clarify things before I get started in this reply. Costs were about $2k to include OEM new moonroof glass from the
Porsche
and replacement sunroof seals that was recommended in the tech instructions re: servicing/replacing damaged moonroof/sunroof componenents. DIdn't have to do the seals but figured it was best way to ensure a leakproof and air tight install of the new moonroof. As for labor its is simple unbolting the old sunroof anf bolting on the new one once the old one is removed. Took 2hrs total to disconnect everything and reconnect all the various parts and remove the roof and seal and then reverse the process with the moonroof at least that is what they billed me. I am told there is no way to do the sunshade portion of the moonroof as a retrofit. The motors are part of the sunroof track which is laid into the roof during assembly on the factory floor. Front and rear sections are then bonded and probably spot welded into place afterwards. Saw the whole process on an episode of "How its Made:
Porsche
991" and looks to be that the moonroof or sunroof cars have those assemblies laid into the roof in once piece and then the rest of the roof finished around/afterwards. So when I inquired the master
Porsche
tech did a bit of investigating and returned back with "it cannot be done" at least not at their shop level. Now I am sure there is someone out there who wouldn't mind opening up your roof and doing so but at that point it probably isn't cost effective to do so. IMHO.
So what I did since I am missing a sunshade is I had my dealer add 5% nano ceramic tint to the moonroof to help block out the light a bit and reduce heat transmission. Still get lots of light into the interior which was my main purpose and aesthetically is definately achieved the results I wanted. To get the front and rear roof panels surrounding the sunroof to match without painting the car; they wrapped it in black gloss vinyl then clear bra'd both sections to protect the vinyl wrap. Looks just like factory OEM roof panels which come in gloss black and also match the OEM moonroof. That cost me about $100 to do. I still have my OEM sunroof in the garage wrapped up and since its a bolt on job I can easily swap it back in IF I sell the car at some point and the new owner wanted it.
90 days since this was done and how's it going? So far the roof panels have held up and look just the same as the day initially done in July. Roof works like a charm...opens/closes/tilts using original console buttons. Allows light in and freshens up the interior as desired. Glass tint was great move and I am contemplating having it done on my wife's
Cayenne
as she has the full panoramic roof. Her interior allows alot more light in and gets a lot hotter when open but then again she has the OEM motorized sunshade that came with the
Cayenne
also. Overall glad I thought about it and had it done. Here's a few pics taken last night with the
iPhone
to give a bit more perspective of the interior and outside. Hope this helped.
Awesome accounting of an option that many of us would love....can I talk to you off-line tomorrow ? Thanks, Tom @ [phone removed]
MANY Thanks.
How about some o/s view pics
Cool upgrades!
Looks like you need some solution to store your sunglasses
