Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hi have read that there is a pink and grey wire that controls the speedo cut out on the pse.and if you cut it,you stop the cut off at about 50mph.I need the pse to still be switchable on the dash (so not to upset everyone at 7am every morning!)but want to get rid off the cut out at 50mph (or what ever it is !) i have seen the relay modification on renntechs forum, but wondered if this pink/grey wire mod is true! thanks

POST 2Original post

It's true. Find the relay box Identify the PSE relay Get to the reverse of the box and find the pink/grey wire going to this relay Snip and you're done. Sounds simple.......it is, it's just a right barsteward to do ie. location, cable ties and you need smallish hands.

POST 3Original post

I don't think the PSE is that loud on start up anyway. Let's face it, you move off your drive in 1st gear and the car isn't at operating temperature. The sound only really comes on when accelerating hard....unless you have a long drive out of your estate it's not going to be that bad.

POST 4Original post

I cannot believe that I had not come across this earlier. I though my exhaust was going quiet due to the revs I was doing. Did this mod and it has made a massive difference (so my smile). The "nice sound" cuts out at 25 and comes back in at 44mph. As I drive most of the time on my trip to work between 25 and 44 my pleasure is diminished. Simply remove the relay, open it up, disconnect pin 1 by cutting the diode and put it all back in. Trying to put insualtion atpe over the pin failed a few times. Now my car sounds like god intended. Lovely.

POST 5Original post

Agreed. This mod was the first thing I did to my car when I bought it. I hated how the exhaust artifically went quiet just when it sounds its best. Such an easy mod too. I don't like the sound of hacking around with the wiring loom behind the relay box when you can just take out the relay, open it up and cut the diode. I believe there's other mods that stop the quiet/loud switch from working, but the quiet mode is useful occasionally. I used it this evening when driving past a horse

POST 6Original post

Mine still goes quiet between 30-45ish mph, and it's staying that way - I refuse to mod it in any way, it's staying exactly as it left the factory...

POST 7Original post

Agree just don't rev it and it's fine Just remove the relay and leave out :thumb:

POST 8Original post

EDITED: as I wrote #23 rather than the correct #2 as the relay location. #23 is the data/signal line plug location if you want to do the pink/grey speed signal mod. Be aware this is not advised if you have a cab or PCM (nav) as this is a shared data line and speed related functions of those options will fail. Do the relay pull, or better diode cut mod. Just pull the under-dash relay: #2 when the PSE is loud (switched open). LHD, but you get the idea: More info here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=491

POST 9Original post

Hey, whasssup Fred Housego? Seriously, you should be earning cash for the knowledge you have :worship:

POST 11Original post

Sorry just to be clear, do you have to break open the relay cover, or does it just unclip? Also is pin 1 marked out and easy to identify when you open it?

Make sure the car is turned off, remove relay #2 It is black (see below) and printed "Abgasklappen" (German for "EXHAUST VALVE" or "EXHAUST FLAP"). Numbered: 996.618.980.01 or 996.618.980.02 or 996.618.980.03 Take the relay indoors and sit down. It may be quite difficult to prize the relay open, just use a thin blade or jeweller's screwdrivers to lever open. Be careful, there is a PCB inside. Cut out the chestnut brown/dark orange glass diode (side snips are good) that connects to Pin 1 (it's the diode nearest the PCB support strut). Clip back together and replace in relay carrier. Go for a drive

POST 13Original post

Very descriptive. Thanks. I presume the on/ off switch up front will still work, should I want to cut the noise level on occasions ?

POST 14Original post

Yes. That is the advantage of the "diode cut". The first, simpler, quicker "reversible" instructions posted on page 1 were for the "relay pull" - which does just hold the PSE on continuously, but also disables switch (after you pull the relay there's nothing to connect to!). This method, although slightly less easy and quick (and dirty) and preserves the switch functions - so you can still force to quiet, but only you are in control - NO SPEED DEPENDENCE. So you have a couple of choices, if you feel happy doing the "diode cut" it is the better mod. (in fact just removing a relay barely counts as a mod in my book, but hey ho ...)

POST 15Original post

Wow ... I've just done this mod and what a difference. I'd previously disconnected the plug in the engine bay so the PSE was constantly one and forgotten just what a difference it made when it was turned off. I'm still going to have it turned on most of the time but it will be handy to be able to turn it off with the switch again for some early morning or late night returns
