Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suggestion
If you can get clean access to the alternator B+ terminal without removing the alternator, you may get away with leaving it in place, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the throttle body/Y-pipe area has to come off to route the cable properly rather than just fight it.

As a follow up to this it ended up being a problem with both the Starter and also a break in the main power distribution cable rather than the Y cable, I am changing the Starter and managed to remove the Old one with a bit off effort on the top attachment bolt which is a pig to get at, one thing I can not find anything about though is should the Spigot on the end of the new starter shaft be greased or not ?

I would be amazed if you could change the Y cable without removing the throttle body on the Turbo.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Has anyone changed the Y cable on a Manual 996 Turbo ? and if so do you know if you need to remove the Throttle Body and the Alternator to gain access, I have watched a number of videos of changing it on normal 996 and 997 which always seem to require the throttle body and the Alternator to be removed but cant find anything on the Turbo, the Airbox will definatly need to come off but I wondered if there is enough access to get to the cable, it does look like you can get to the starter end from underneath Rgds Mike
I haven’t done one on a manual Turbo, but I’d expect access to be tighter than a normal 996 rather than easier.
Airbox off is almost certainly needed. If you can get clean access to the alternator B+ terminal without removing the alternator, you may get away with leaving it in place, but I wouldn’t be surprised if the throttle body/Y-pipe area has to come off to route the cable properly rather than just fight it.
Starter end may be reachable from underneath, but the awkward part is usually following the cable route and clips, not just undoing the nut.
I’d disconnect the battery, remove the airbox first and see what access you genuinely have. If the cable is being replaced because of hot-start/charging issues, I’d rather remove a bit more hardware and route it correctly than drag the new cable through blind.
I did the Y-cable last week on my C4S 3.6. I had to remove the airbox, throttle body and first intake plenum to access the starter. I also had to remove the alternator to access the bolt on the back of that. Others seems to have been able to disconnect that end of the Y cable without removing the alternator by reaching around the back. Looking at the Porsche parts diagrams for the Turbo, it looks to be a very similar arrangement. I would be amazed if you could change the Y cable without removing the throttle body on the Turbo.
I know the main output gear should not as it will encorage crap to stick to it but the end of the starter shaft engages in a bushing in gearbox housing and was wondering if this should be greased prior to installation anyone know ?
