Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi There, I am going through the process of buying my first Porsche and I am test driving a 996 Carrera 2 with 71000 miles on the clock and a 02 plate. The engine was rebuilt in 2015 due to worn piston bore scoring on cylinder 6 the work was carried out by a Porsche garage and cost about 8K. Should this worry me? and any tips on what I should look out for on the test drive would be gratefully received. Many Thanks John

POST 2Original post

Was it Hartech that carried out the work? If so, the car should be worth more as a result and the one to go for (if everything else checks out) We have a buyers guide for all the other elements to look for. Look in the members tech section

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

And thanks for your reply Rodney, this is all very new for me and don't want to buy a lemon

POST 5Original post

Northway are also a decent garage. Can you get a breakdown of what works were carried out - that would be very helpful. Either way, see it as a positive. These engines have a roughly 5% chance of failing, so if they’ve replaced the existing liners with Nikasil liners then you should be good to go for many years. The buyer’s guide in the forum will help you with everything else.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Rodney I have been to the forum and that is a big help I also have a great article in 911 & Porsche magazine
