Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

5 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 1 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

There are three chain tensioners on the 996 engine (Main Tensioner, 1-3 Cylinder Bank, 4-6 Cylinder Bank). Wayne's article only mentions loosening/removing the main tensioner and the 1-3 tensioner. Is the 4-6 tensioner (located under the AC compressor) not a concern?

POST 2Original post

When I did my IMSR, I loosened all 3, but I have read many times that the 4-6 is not necessary to loosen.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for the answer Rick. Did you remove the tensioners completely or did you just loosen them a bit? Did you use the set screws to secure the IMS sprocket or did you just lock the cams? Or both?

POST 4Original post

I just loosened IMS, 1-3, and 4-6. I just made sure that I didn't move the cams in the process and confirmed they didn't jump during the procedure.

POST 5Original post

pin the crank at TDC before you start and it should be OK. Fancy tool can be replaced by 5/16 metal rod
