Assuming your IMSB has been replaced, RMS, clutch and flywheel are all in good shape, you may want to focus on the items that don't require your engine to be dropped as part of your list.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello fellow 996 owners!
I have a 2004 C4S that has a leaky seal on the oil cooler, so its due for replacement. With its difficult location, and the age of the car (almost 20 years), I am thinking i tackle a lot of things "while I'm in there."
Does anyone have any experience with replacing this themselves, and what should be changed out? I have to take the throttle body and intake header off to get at the oil cooler, so I should have as good of access to everything without actually dropping the full engine. The list of things I'm thinking to change out are:
-oil cooler
-engine mounts
-Coolant tank
-spark plugs (and coils if necessary)
-AOS was changed ~5 years ago, change it again?
Any rubber hoses or other parts that should be changed out? What about the starter? The car cranks fine, but its the original starter. I've never had one last as long as this car, prior GM vehicles that i've owned needed a starter every 5 years LOL
Anything else that should be replaced?
Much appreciated!
Assuming your IMSB has been replaced, RMS, clutch and flywheel are all in good shape, you may want to focus on the items that don't require your engine to be dropped as part of your list. These items will help to mitigate various risks.
1. Replace aos with UAOS.
2. New water pump
3. Spark plugs and ignition coils
4. Fuel injectors.
Good luck with it.
Fuel injectors! Thanks, I didn't think of that.
UAOS was something I had never heard of, will definitely change the OEM one out for that. Water pump was changed ~7 years and 25000 miles ago, i'm hoping its still OK. IMS / clutch were done 2 years / 4000 miles ago so everything is good there
Yea but the wp can be done fairly easily from underneath at anytime. The rest is easy to get to with the intakes off. Carefully inspect the alt "y" power cable. Also double check the vacuum rubber boots and nylon hose. Those parts r cheap and will be easy to get to if they look bad.
+1 for the vacuum hoses. When I was replacing the AOS and oil cooler, I found several nylon vacuum lines were very brittle. I replaced all of them with new silicone vacuum lines.
Since you'll be removing the intakes, replace the gaskets on the plenums. FCP Euro has a kit for the upper and lower intake manifold gaskets:

I believe Mike Hidalgo from FCP Euro has a very good DIY video on YouTube, please check it out... For me, I consider this DIY a difficult job and might not be able to do it myself; but for others it might be very do-able; kudos to you for tackling it yourself, good-luck! Cheers,
This is also my list (except don't have UAOS on it, though maybe I should). 100k, no prior history. First time doing any of this kind of work. Did mounter mounts, and just need to commit to getting in there. It's a lot of stuff to tackle at once, even if it makes sense to do it all at same time.
I would do the UAOS track version whether you plan on tracking the car or not. Just like the IMS Solution mitigates catastrophic engine bearing failure, the UAOS track version mitigates a boat load of issues such as intermix, hydra lock, and the risk of overfilling your oil and cobsequences. Its the swiss army knife of solutions that solves for many catastrophic issues.
Just a damn good no brainer.
I would seriously consider the starter . If you have a GOOD local rebuilder have them test the unit . If anything is sketchy either rebuild or replace . Unless you enjoy removing the top end plumbing 😋
It was actually FCP's video that made me believe its something I could do! Its a lot, but it looks like a fairly straightforward process.
Unfortunately I'm due to have the siding replaced on the house this year, so if I want to use the 996 I have to get my hands dirty!
Its going to be very easily accessible with everything out of the way, which is the reason I'm considering replacing it at the same time. I'm just starting to rack up a hefty bill of "might as well's" for this project!
Yeah, I learned a long time ago to do as much "while you are in there" stuff as you can. It ends up saving you in time and money.
If you are proactive about it, you can set up a rotation of parts and service and therefore budget for it.
Does anyone know a good vendor for a full set of replacement silicone vacuum lines? Or does everyone just get loose rolls of tubing, and cut them to size?
Just buy the porsche stuff, it lasts 20+ years. Its sold by the meter and is cheap. The rubber elbows and t's r cheap too. I think 2 meters does the whole car, if u study the pet drawings on autoatlanta.com u can count the rubber boots.

Damage is right. Can’t drive the house. You should plan the siding project in great detail while you wrench on the car. The more you get done on the 996, the better and more cost effective the siding job will be. Win, win!

If its the original starter DONT let it go have it rebuilt locally or buy the parts yourself, quite often all the starter needs is 2 bearings, and new brushes.
You might have to have a starter rebuilder turn the surface the brushes ride on. Oh and a couple cans of electrical cleaner.
