Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1Original post

Video: Note: here you can hear the noise when reversing, then I push the clutch in completely and rev it but you can still hear the noise. Then I put it in neutral and rev with the clutch in but can still hear it. Then I put it in neutral with the clutch out and the noise stops. Ok, here’s the story. Any help is appreciated. So on Saturday my dad and I changed my oil and washed the engine bay. We bought the ramps to help, and he insisted on backing it onto them. He was really burning the clutch when backing it on; keeping it around 4K rpm while slowly backing onto the ramps (Don’t know if this is the culprit but thought I’d add it). It had the burning clutch smell and everything. We changed the oil and all was well until about 15 miles later when I was taking my friend for a ride, I pushed the car fairly hard, racing it a bit. We pulled into a gas station and when I started to drive out, I heard the noise for the first time. I didn’t really hear it again and I took the car to a cars and coffee on Sunday morning. I heard it again when leaving the meet, and off and on from then. But today I decided to drive it again. It was all good, I drove it around the block but when I pulled back up to my house I heard it and started recording it. That’s the video. Also the clutch is pretty new, the old owner replaced it. Help?

POST 2Original post

Take this for what a free internet diagnosis is worth. Assuming that there's not a wrench left on an undertray the one thing I can think of that would be occurring with the clutch partially out while reversing or revving fully in versus clutch out is the throwout bearing is loaded and spinning, clutch disk stationery relative to the flywheel and pressure plate and the input shaft spinning in the pilot bearing with clutch depressed. Maybe the clutch disk or pressure plate warped and is vibrating against each other. Or maybe one of the bearings was cooked. Or the friction material damaged. I'd suggest a professional opinion. If the Boxster is anything like the Cayman it's quite easy to back up ramps at low revs avoiding the fried clutch smell.

POST 3Original post

Do you think something could’ve burned/warped that easily? Or just by one decent drive around the block? I do believe you that backing it onto ramps is easy, but my dad thinks he can/knows how to correctly drive stick much better than he actually can. Thank you for your help!

POST 4Original post

If you smelled burning clutch lining it got pretty hot. Enough to damage something I don't know for sure. I'd try a local indy who can actually hear and feel it. Tough to say more remotely.
