I am buying a 2004 550 special edition, and I know it needs new shocks. I know that the special edition is lower than a standard Boxster, but I assume that is the springs, not the shocks. Does anyone know if I can use standard 2004 Boxster S shocks?

You are correct, your car has the M030 suspension package. If you buy the shocks through the dealership, they will sell you a unique shock for your car that is a built by Bilstein. If you go to Bilstein directly, they will sell you an OEM replacement (B4) that is same as the non-M030 shocks/struts. They told me during a conversation with a customer service representative located in their USA HQ (Sept 2022), the difference between the M030 and non-M030 OEM shocks (both made by Bilstein for the 986) is so small, they sell just the one model and only Porsche sells the unique shock through their parts system. The price difference between the two is significant for a Bilstein stated negligible performance difference. Another option would be their sport B6, price comparably to the Bilstein B4.
