Suspected cause
But all joking aside, a dyno shop is probably THE worst place to record the sound of a car's exhaust.
Leading evidence: 'worst place' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'worst place' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run mic' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
If you run a mic from your go pro out to your license plate area, all exhausts sound good.

Heck, I just figured out how to use my 12 year old Go Pro Hero 3 last summer.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I've listened to a lot of Porsche exhausts in the last few years. I've never heard one that sounds like this. Can anyone tell me how? Maybe just keeping it reved to the mood?

From the description in another of his videos
Loudest Porsche 911 996 exhaust sound - YouTube
he states "
Sound of a Porsche 996 4S with the complete Evox exhaust system with valves,
cat removal
.
"
he has a link to his instagram channel there, so you can always direct message him to clarify.
Well, the loud (amplitude) is an integral part of the soundIf you reduce the loudness the sound changes, its really simple physics (which as we know isnt always so simple) and theres no real way around it.
* It always amazes me when a restaurant hires a 5 pc band to play during dinner hour and then constantly asks to turn down the levels to that of a radio
More throttle = more volume. You may want to consider a valved exhaust. I've been pretty happy with that choice and it gives me an option of a somewhat louder than stock or pretty loud with a switch of a button. The volume will also depend whether you have stock cats, 200 cel or straight pipe. Just like suspension, exhaust sound is pretty subjective.
RegularGuy,
If you run a mic from your go pro out to your license plate area, all exhausts sound good. But keep in the back of your mind that they sound the best under load on or off the gas. Stationary reving just doesn't capture the sounds.
Each to their own, but to me it makes the car sound really “cheap”, but not only that, it now sounds like a straight six BMW with a broken/cheap aftermarket exhaust.
One man’s meat is another man’s poison ...
I don’t know maybe in theUK but I have never had anyone tell me that my car sounded cheap
if anything I’ve had more compliments from Ferrari and Lamborghini guys then my Porsche group
RegularGuy, it's almost spring. PCA track events are about to start. Go out for a couple and listen. The guys are all approachable and love to talk about their cars. Ask them what they are running. See what you like in person versus a video. Take your time, it's an expensive purchase. But after 2 or 3 events yiu will figure out what you like and what you can handle.
All too often the Ferrari and Lamborghini owners just want more noise, theyre not overly concerned about the quality of that additional noise, they just want more decibels. Which is my way of saying, I wouldnt consider positive comments from Ferrari and Lamborghini owners, as being a particularly good guide to the quality of the noise your car may or may not make.
But generally speaking, listening to clips of exhaust sounds on Youtube is a recipe for disaster, as microphone and speaker quality varies so much (as does microphone position ...)
But having looked at the Evox 996 exhaust system on their website, it does look like a well made item, but in my experience removing the cats from even the best designed and fabricated exhaust, all too often makes a 996 sound cheap, we have better descriptions over here in the UK, but they probably wont translate particularly well to the other side of the pond. Perhaps youd prefer it if I said less mellifluous or sonorous ? But the bottom line is it sounds like a cheap exhaust, and dare I say it, I think both the Soul and Fister exhausts sound similar.
None of the above is intended to cause offence, and I hope none is taken. We are ALL different and how we interpret sound varies from one individual to another. There is no right or wrong in these matters.
This is how I perceive a flat six exhaust should sound, but that is only my opinion, and please note I did place a caveat at the end of my last post One mans meat is another mans poison
Both are Mezgers, the BTB exhaust car was mine, and I owned a Manthey modified car with the same exhaust/inlet mods as the yellow car, so I know the sounds to be accurate reproductions of the noises their exhausts produced.

Since we are sharing exhaust sounds. Here is a little on-ramp fun.
Oem headers, fvd 200 cell cats and sport mufflers from a mic hanging off the license plate. If you are standing on the side of the road, it will sound different as will sitting in the car.
Go into the video 16-17 seconds and you will hear it under acceleration. Exhaust and intake sounds are intoxicating.
Best bet is go to a PCA DE and listen to the cars.

Sounds good, I'd like to hear it from the outside too
and you've retained the cats ... which in my experience seems to be instrumental in the 996 exhaust retaining a sound that is mellifluous and sonorous (I'd say not cheap, but that turn of phrase clearly isn't well received around these parts)
You'll note I didn't say
all
modified exhausts sounded cheap, I said that
all too often
removing the cats makes a 996 sound cheap. But by the same token, I suspect that
your
views might be regarded as being the tiniest bit biased when it comes to giving a perspective on how
your
exhaust sounds
But all joking aside, a dyno shop is probably THE worst place to record the sound of a car's exhaust. The sound of the tyres on the dyno's rollers along with all the sounds bouncing off the walls and ceiling in what is a pretty enclosed space, is less than ideal, add in the length of the pulls (ie short) and the effect will never be the same as something like this :
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grlqdthGIJE
Or indeed the previous link I posted :
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=w3J8HeIfJwc&t=12s
where the engine is under increasing load for longer as the driver shifts up through the gears, and aero drag makes the motor work increasingly hard.
Those two clips are of course Mezger engined cars, but here's a 996.2 C2 with a modified exhaust which manages to sound redolent of an aircooled car and mellifluous into the bargain.

Certainly helps to have a good mic as well which I don't. Heck, I just figured out how to use my 12 year old Go Pro Hero 3 last summer. No question, exhaust is a personal choice. I gotta drive in my neighborhood, so want a reasonable sound at low rpm, but certainly want a big sound when on it.
Your cup engine was exceptional sounding.
oh lord obviously the exhaust sound clip on a dyno is not the best as the intent was to film the runs. If you have a good ear you still hear it an ignore the roller sounds. Smh
