I always thought vacuum cleaner and air conditioning designers used the 911 as inspiration, now it appears to be the other way around.

From the side profile also, its not a nice clean continuos line through the rest of the car, this line (ok for simple speak lets call it the seam, where the bar meets the metalwork) at the rear is off to the front, it is at eyebrow height (top of the arch) at the rear, then a few inches lower than the eyebrow of the guard at the front, and appears to run through the rim.

due for release 2019? what do folks think about its looks https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/new-cars/2019-porsche-911 rear end may be polarising for some?

POST 2Original post

140 page thread on this on Rennlist with some more recent images ............not a fan of the rear tail lights and the 3 brake light ,,,we still will not 100% know until the release as there are several combinations of rear end details on test mules getting around ... https://rennlist.com/forums/992/973415-2019-next-generation-992-spy-pics-140.html

POST 4Original post

this was mentioned just yesterday in another thread, about on the 996/7 & 991 where the bar meets the guard around the headlamp ( I think its fine btw).. now the question is answered, this looks shocking to me that one big line.

POST 5Original post

Quotes source post: 267416

I Am not a fan off that either ,,,,,,,unfortunately there is a video floating around of about half a dozen black test mules in L.A and San Fran area and they all have that front guard and bonnet detail ,,,there are different bumpers and other minor difference on the cars but that detail remains the same on all ,,,,,kinda gives the impression that  will be the finished product ...???

POST 6Original post

Quotes source post: 267416

That looks much better and has some thought put into it! Not a fan of those big ugly grilles though! The rest just looks like a 991.... which by the looks is what buyers want.

POST 7Original post

The original 911 was a cute good looking girl. Now she is a  big old dame who has had too much plastic surgery. It is a fact that modern Porsches (cars in general) are not especially good looking. But I'll grant they have lower emissions than the girls of the 60s!

POST 9Original post

I am biased but I believe 911's are just too large nowadays.

POST 10Original post

Quotes source posts: 267419, 267422

It doesn't look right! Although not perfect on the 991 its better, or at least gives the impression of a more continuos line. Similar to the 991 on the 997, the line appears to run about the eyebrow height of the wheel Dead perfect on the longhood! I think the other genius (or pupose) of the front bar seam being where it is in the prior models, is you are somewhat losing the seam, by placing it through the shortest path. It is also nice that the hood (bonnet/frunk lid) is shorter on the prior cars, it finishes higher than the lowest point of the headlamp. Ie New one is a "long hood" I'm sure someone with more design savvy can correct my shitty translation... I will agree to disagree...

POST 14Original post

I'm sorry (and I know this is going to upset some people) but I've had enough of the basic 911 shape being minutely changed with every model. I really do think it's time for Porsche to bite the bullet and design a whole new car that doesn't resemble the basic 911 shape as their flagship model. I know the 928 was intended for that purpose but lets face it the 911 shape has now been done to death. There are only so many stickers and spoiler designs out there. Some of the recent concept cars seem to fit the bill. Ferrari seem to get away with it (washing my mouth out with soap now ? ). "Build it and they will come" Ok i'm off o/s where 911 owners can't find me ? 3legs (ex 924, 911, 930 owner)

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 267434

The whole point of the 911 is evolution, changing "the basic silhouette" would mean a new model. I'd welcome a new variant, but lets face it (and using the past as a reference) a 928 aint a 911, 2 totally different cars... better if they live together in harmony, buy one or the other or both if you can.

POST 16Original post

Not really disagreeing with you Edgy but I just think the 911 has evolved about as far as it can without changing to a new model. You're right a 928 is no 911, It's better ? ? ? I'm kidding.................................... .or am I ? Some of the recent concept cars still have the basic 2 door shape but don't have the silhouette of a 911 but still look sensational (although we all know when they release a car it looks nothing like the concept).

POST 17Original post

Quotes source post: 267427

I tend to agree.  It looks rather beefy.  Could do well in the USA. And those squinty rear lights .... ?

POST 19Original post

Is that new front ‘grille’ copied from the new Cayenne?

POST 20Original post

Quotes source post: 267481

Hate the front "Air conditioner" grills, back grills, razor thin back lights and out of proportion lengths from bottom of windscreen to both bumpers. Never thought I'd say it, time to change those proportions, move the front cockpit back, ditch the back seats, engine forward and shorten the overall length. Bloody easy, what could possibly go wrong with my plan hahhaaha No from a Fujitsu split system

POST 26Original post

The frunk has a squared off look about it which i don't like and don't get me started on those grilles, what a horrid look. When you look at the front guards at different angles it has a VW Beetle look about it as well, i also read somewhere that this iteration would have some styling cues from the 993 thrown in hence the big ass? I don't mind the look of the hips on this car.

Funny, I showed them to my significant other last night, that is exactly what she said=  beetle! I am sure they'll make it palatable by the time we see a production car... but I'm hardly excited based on the "spy shots" ...

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

the front looks a bit too Caymanesque to me?

POST 29Original post

Is that a camera under the number plate? Could it be for advanced driver technologies?

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 267494

Hhahah they answered their own question to the problem of the too large run out of options 911 with the GT4. Tweak up the power dept and turbo it for, respectively, a GT3 and Turbo/GT2 replacement and tweak down the body adornments for Carrera replacement. So easy huh! It'd destroy the  Porsche marketing  and they'd need to come up with the 2020 mod 928 to save the company!

POST 32Original post

Thought so. Not having a 991 I didn’t know it was already available ?

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 267521

I am pretty sure it was a very expensive option and not standard ..... at least on 991.1 ,,,not sure about .2

POST 34Original post

Quotes source post: 267524

correct, options on both - crazy money for active cruise, lane departure etc. $35k Hyundai comes loaded with that stuff, needs to be optioned on a $300k 911... BTW anyone else notice the dash? Zoom in - they have cardboard over it, looks underneath like its got a hump that differs from 911s of the past incl. 991

POST 35Original post

Quotes source post: 267526

The talk is the Dash will be very similar to the new Macan dash .. again this is just talk ...???

POST 37Original post

That rear end needs gastric banding.  Maybe it has had it ...

POST 38Original post

The main thing I can not stand is the High mount brake light ,,I honestly hope this is just something put on the mules and the final car will either not have it or have something with a little more style about it .......The one in vid looks like some crap from supercheap auto that they stuck on with double sided tape ...

POST 39Original post

Porsche used to say they defined their sports cars by having no front radiator/grill. But those designers are now RIP.

POST 40Original post

Quotes source post: 268310

Those designers cling desperately to their belief that if is it below the headlight line then it is not a grill, merely an air intake.... and they could probably sell ice to the Eskimo's...… (well they would bloody try to!) The Cayenne is a prime example of this, massive grills, but to Porsche it has none.....

POST 41Original post

Quotes source post: 268312

To be fair , the KN is no sports car. And it could be argued the 911 is now a GT like car , the 928 they are frightened to build.

POST 42Original post

It's not, but it is still the official Porsche line that none of it's cars have a grill and that none never will..... I think they are starting to believe their own BS...…. For all the stories of a new 928, it will never be...… another transaxle car will never come from Porsche and if it has not got that it's not a 928. Kind of like having a non flat 6 911......

POST 43Original post

Quotes source post: 268316

Don't you mean 180 degree V6?

POST 44Original post

The 911 has become a metaphor for Porsche, not its commercial reality.  Even if they kept making the original 911, SC, or the 993 or the 959, or Carrera GT as a tribute to their past it might have more meaning than these successive aberrations of an innovative and courageous original design.  One has to wonder what they are really planning as its replacement as a 'sports' car, as it seems to be becoming more myth than reality.

POST 45Original post

What many claim  could be the production 992 ..... still looks to have some unfinished areas on the front and rear bumpers and the tail lights

I have just read a 4 car shootout between the 991,  Mclaren something, Audi R8 and the new Aston, the Porsche was rated best overall, which is nice, but boy did it look bland and boring compared to the rest! Obviously this is not the finish production car yet but all of the pre production mules I have seen have all had these rear end design details ,,,,I honestly hope this is not the finished product ...

POST 53Original post

Quotes source post: 275368

Yep, I’m not sure I like: - the integrated exhaust - the centre brake light in the decklid - the decklid the way it integrates with the swoop of the rear window - the integrated rear wing - the Venetian blinds in the front air ducts - the fact that it’s got “advanced driver technologies” (I thought in a 911that would be the driver - ffs!) - the rear light bar (I’m not sure that I’m not sure about this) - I think it’s longer than the prev model (I’m sure I don’t like that, i mean how friggen big can these cars get?) - while I’m at it... don’t like the all turbo, reduced cc capacity across the range - emissions, meh! i like:  - the wide body look That’ll do for now...

POST 54Original post

The designers from Telsa doesn't work for Porsche now do they? Sorry, but that's hideous

POST 55Original post

‘Member the days when a 911 decklid came up to your shin and not your elbow?  I remember... The side profile must just about match a mustang now except for the bluff front.  But then standing the lights up a bit to make some torpedo tubes would make it more interesting. what will they call the turbo now?  Time for ‘turbo carrera’ to make a comeback?

POST 56Original post

It still looks like a 911, they have done their job. They have tried to modernise the design, it works a bit, I like the fact that they tried, just recycling the same old design ethos is a bit boring to me.... Porsche will sell everyone one they can make too!

I feel in reality the 911 has been making a slow conservative march towards being a Grand Tourer. The Boxster and Cayman are the sports cars now this new design looks far more like a GT and looks the goods.

POST 62Original post

I think the 991.2 GT3 Touring will be the peak of 911 evolution... all down hill from here 😉 Old one is better blah blah blah new one is too soft etc etc. Same response, rinse and repeat every 10 years or so (5 if you include the .2s)...

Happy to, a 928 has to be front engined and have 8 cylinders. Plus the 992 is too big and heavy

"Importantly there will no longer be narrow and wide body 911s, all will now feature haunches as wide, if not wider, than those typically reserved for Turbo models"

POST 70Original post

Yeh the crying on other forums has already started .................I look at it this way the car is what it is ,,,if people dont like it don,t buy one .... My first impressions I like it ...

POST 71Original post

Meh the back is too high.  So is the front - the lights are too high.  And the wheels are too big.  And it’s a fat beast. why can’t they just build a faster 993?

POST 74Original post

They all ride on the wide body chassis now .....The high mount brake light really dosnt appeal to me but I am certain some after market supplier will come up with a novel way of removing it and replacing it with some thing that looks better ..

POST 76Original post

Like the wide haunches and the interior looks a lot more modern. That rear though... what a mess!

POST 77Original post

Love everything apart from the centre rear stop light. Why that was not integrated into the top of the rear window to compliment the red tail light strip amazes me

POST 78Original post

It reminds me of the old international Harvester badge ...........

POST 80Original post

I think it looks lovely – a car I’d love to get in with the Mrs and drive some lovely roads on my way to Daylesford for a weekend away. Lovely. But do I want to chuck it around Reefton Spur? Meh… I’m sure it would be amazing. The problem is Porsche don’t make it look like it would be. To be fair, they’re somewhat between a rock and a hard place when you consider the audience for a brand new Carrera S. Add to this Porsche’s penchant of taking itself waaaaay too seriously when producing any kind of video or advertising material. With this in mind and considering the demographic profile of their target market, they present the car as a luxury Grand Tourer, sliently and calmly carving it’s way through cities and sweeping country roads. I watched this video and thought I really need to see Chris Harris wringing its neck in anger to get any sense of the excitement that I’m sure lurks beneath it’s ever widening rear end. Because Porsche do a really good job of making it look like about the least fun one can have in a rear-engined thoroughbred…

POST 81Original post

911 tradionalists hate to see change, stems from the fact that the 911 went for so long without major change.

I'm no traditionalist. happy for change and overall, i think there are some good developments here. I'm sure the car will be amazing. I have a bigger issue with how Porsche market it.

Looking at that vid it seems to me that they really are trying to appeal to a different demo, won’t be surprised if they get-former  gt3 owner Caitlin Jenner to do the forthcoming gt3 adds.

There’s a configurator available on the US site. There options for gold wheels and black calipers.

Its about time they offered a little more variety in the wheel and calipers ..........I saw a couple of the test cars with silver calipers and the Porsche logo color in the matching body color and thought it was a sharp look ...

POST 92Original post

I cannot get over how such a small increase in the front and a 10 mm ride height reduction makes the front end look so much longer and the cabin seem more towards the rear.  Just look at the silver one in the promotional photo above ^^^^

Nick Murray (love or hate his reviews) gives an overview of the US configurator:

POST 95Original post

Pretty much what I expected. Nice but maybe as I get older the classic lines and shape continues to grow. only thing I don’t like is the continued size increase. Longer and wider again than the 991 building. Smaller one may be an unexpected delight?

POST 96Original post

Quotes source post: 275659

Yes, true...but I am a little surprised that PSCBs do not appear to be an option. I was pretty confident that they would bring these brakes to the 992 as a halfway house from the iron brakes to the PCCBs.

POST 97Original post

The 3/4 shots from the rear make it look like there is something missing - or is that just me? Forget the aesthetics for a second, it just seems like its too flat or something? I'll have to check what the 991 looks like from that angle when I get home.

POST 98Original post

As suspected with all the camo off it, I like the overall package, the interior is really nice but there is definitely a few areas of detail I am not mad about, such as the rear end light strip and the front end panel lines, also no NB is kind of shit...

POST 99Original post

When all said and done, if someone gave one to me, I think I'd take it, even if there were some parts of the design features I didn't like.... 🙂

POST 100Original post

So if the 911 had turned into the Cayman GT4 instead of the 991, what would people hate more?  The loss of rear seats and change to mid engine?  Or the rear engine and rear seats kept, but bloaters are continued ad infinitum? Personally I would be less disappointed about going mid engined but staying smaller as opposed to becoming longer and wider with every new version.

POST 101Original post

I like it, the interior is awesome the body is curvaceous, a rather lovely evolution of the 911 shape and those door handles are just perfect. The rear is bold and makes a real statement also. Reading some of the earlier dialog regarding people wanting to see Harris ring the 911'S neck in the marketing promo, this is not that 911, the Carrera and CarreraS versions are sports cars for the road with the ability to track if you want to. That marketing has always been held for the GT/RS Cars, it has always been the case its like a good song you start out at a level then slowly build to the chorus, with the 911 that ends with none other than the GT2RS. Change is natural it adds to the memories and allows us to savour our generation or generations of choice.

They should do away with the shifter altogether ala Mercedes. That thing looks ridiculous. Switch gear looks really nice, and like the new screen + overall dash feel. Another shot I saw of the seats had a very Audi RS 5-8yrs ago feel. Bulky.

POST 104Original post

to me, the wheels look too big for the body.   Tiny cockpit and oversize wheels.   Almost cartoon like.   (i'd still have one though)

It does look like a Nissan 360Z from some angles. I agree on the vestigial shifter

Scott, you make good points... ok, Im starting to agree with you looking at it again... deep breaths phil. 😏 But the door handles ? Yeah, nah, maybe.... ok, I guess they gotta move forward too but do they have to show them off in the first 30 secs... Its like THE big thing.

POST 108Original post

The reason it looks like a 350 is because the 240 was a 911 copy without the low front and the chopped off back. The 350 was an evolution of the 240 design language and now the 911 has evolved to have a high front and high back, so they are converging. It needs to get down low and stop with the comedy sized wheels.  The engine is in the back so why the big bluff front?  To look like a panamera?

POST 109Original post

I guess it is bigger as they need the extra space soon for batteries.

POST 110Original post

The hyooge wheels make it look like a kid's toy. But that appeals to the major markets for the 911. As the 911 evolves it appears that more & more gets stuffed up its arse. Where will it end?

POST 112Original post

Ok, after a few weeks of settling in....I’ve decided there are still 2things I hate about the 992. Most other things I’ve gotten used to, so I’m ok with.... but these 2 still stick in my craw: 1) the third brake light - the  2vertical bars in the decklid. It may be integrated by design with decklid grate but it just looks silly. 2) this is hard to explain but at the front they’ve made all the lower apron all black (no duco  coloured vertical bits connecting upper to lower lip) and therefore it gives the overall look like a wide mouthed frog. That is the upper section (looks like) it’s no longer connected to the front lip of the spoiler. It looks like a wide opening right across.... am I making sense. Anyway, don’t like this!

POST 113Original post

^yes the gaping mouth look is a design dead end.  Lexus have murdered their design language with it.
