Hi All,
I need some advice and some info. I have inherited a 2001
Boxster S
6 speed with a blown engine. Not sure exactly what happened, the engine just blew up on the highway. It's got about 65K miles. I can't remember the color, it's a silverish one but not exactly silver with navy blue leather seats, top and a hard top. It has 17 inch wheels, sport suspension and a few other options (if I remember correctly upgraded sound system, heated seats, xenon headlamps and a few others). It's in very condition and never wrecked. Garage kept. Two new
tires
and two not worn out completely. It has a minor blemish on the rear bumper but could be repainted without bodywork I think (if so desired).
My preliminary research says in current condition it would only bring $1,500 to $2,000 and would just go to a junkyard. What a shame!
Other research suggests that I can do the following:
Buy a wreck with a good engine for $1,500-$3,000
OR
Buy an already removed engine for $4,000-$6,000 possibly with a warranty of 1 - 3 years (example $4,700 with one year warranty:
http://www.autopartsfair.com/porsch.../boxster-2001-catalog.html?fit_notes=53468dc4b13712a37ad55338853213f4&seq_num=2
)
Get a buddy to replace the engine from:
The wreck $2,500
or
The crate $1,500
plus
Shipping to the repair shop: $250-$400
So it looks like ($1,500-$6,000) + ($1,500-$2,500) + ($250-$400) for a range of $4,250 - $7,900 to repair it. Opportunity cost of junking it $1,500 to $2,000. So total cost $5,750 - $9,900.
Car dealer friends suggest a car like this with the engine repaired would bring $10,000-$13,000. True in your opinion(s)?
Should I do this?
Any advice about engine sourcing, legitimacy of these sources and their claimed warranties? Any help on finding a reputable but not expensive car shipper from VA to Philadelphia area (~225 miles)?
Much appreciated. I can't keep the car because I live abroad. I would hate to see it go to the junk yard if it could go to a good home instead at break even or better. I don't love the car so much I want to lose money to put it in the hands of a new owner besides the crusher though...
Car was picked up in summer '01 European delivery from the factory and loved and cared for the past 14 1/2 years.
Any advice greatly appreciated.
Happy holidays all!
P.S. - What happened to the original PPBB?
When my 2001BS hit 80k miles or so, I had to replace
alternator
, water pump,
AOS
. Advise you to factor those in.
Also my engine started leaking oil into coolant.
Don't know how to factor that in. Loved the car, though.
Thanks for the input... that's a good consideration. I didn't realize an engine swap doesn't include all those "extras". I guess if coming out of a wreck it would but not out of a box?
Any other input greatly appreciated. Have to make a decision pretty soon.
I believe there's a used 2005 3.2 engine for sale in the classifieds.

Thanks for that lead... that reminds me of another question I forgot to ask. I read that only 00 and 01 engines will fit an 01 easily... Anyone know, is this true or false?
Thanks.
Can't help with specifics, but would suggest take a look at the book- "101 Projects for your
Porsche Boxster
" by Wayne Dempsey. There is a chapter on engine swaps. The book says the 2001 is the most flexible for engine swaps and can take any 97 to 08
Boxster
or 996
Carrera
motor. An engine swap is a pretty large project. To me it would be fun and interesting for a car to keep and drive and I'd lean toward going to a 3.6l But doing it just to sell on would be more of a chore than a fun project for me. If I didn't plan to keep it I'd just sell it for parts. Best of luck whatever you do.
And b sure u have the
IMS
upgrade, if/when u do the engine swap.
The problem with this type of project is you can spend that $9,900 (and frankly, I think it will be a lot more expensive) and replace the motor, but you may not be able to cover the cost of that engine if you sell it. Check the sales prices for 2001s.
I don't know if the 2001
Boxster
holds its value like other P cars, but I wonder if parting the car out could bring you more than the junk fee?
