Unlike the fasteners used on 996 models, which are one piece plastic, the ones on my 997 are a combination of plastic and rubber with a coiled spring at one end where they are held in the door card, They also are in two parts, with a disk that can be pulled out a short distance or snapped back in.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I'm replacing the door speakers in my new-to-me '09 997.2 C2S. I've managed to get the door panel off without breaking any of the fasteners, but I'm having a very hard time getting the door panel (card) back on so that it's seated all the way around. On the '02 996 C2 that I used to own, I had the door card off three times to fix a problem of the window not dropping down to clear the door gasket. The third time I had the door card off, I replaced the door latch mechanism, and that fixed the problem. The door card fasteners came out and went back in with no problems, but the ones in my 997.2 are a different story. There were a number of changes to the interior between the 997.1 and 997.2 models, I believe, so it's possible that different fasteners were for the 997.1 and 997.2 models. Unlike the fasteners used on 996 models, which are one piece plastic, the ones on my 997 are a combination of plastic and rubber with a coiled spring at one end where they are held in the door card, They also are in two parts, with a disk that can be pulled out a short distance or snapped back in. I'm not sure if the disk is supposed to be pulled out when you install the door card. With the disk pushed all the way in, the fasteners don't seem to want to go in -- I've even applied a small amount of Vaseline to the ends of the fasteners, but that hasn't seemed to help. Here's my question: When you install the door panel onto the door, should the movable disk be pulled out or pressed into its inner position before you snap the door panel onto the door? Some of the fasteners go in like they should, but the ones toward the front edge of the door are the ones giving me fits, especially the lower front corner where the bass speaker is. The new speakers are exactly the same part number as the ones I'm replacing, so I don't think they or anything else is causing an interference. At the moment the door panel is partially installed, but I will remove it and try to take a picture of these fasteners to give you a better idea of what they look like. I'm hoping that someone here has run into my problem, fingers crossed...

POST 2 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, I figured these fasteners out. In case anyone else with a 997 needs to take their door panel apart, here's a picture of a couple of them. As they are shipped the disk nearer the white plastic tip is farther away from the other disk. If you press the movable disk (the one closer to the white tip), a section just below the tip expands, which locks the fastener place. When I was originally trying to put the door panel back on, the fasteners were compressed, making it impossible for them to fit in the holes in the door panel backing plate. I took all 9 of them out of my door card, and levered them out so they could go in the holes in the door panel itself. As it turned out, my efforts in removing the door panel caused a couple of the fasteners to partially break. In preparation for this work I bought a half dozen of these fasteners from our hosts. They're only $1.25 apiece, an amazingly low price for something that goes on a Porsche!
