Had they not utterly taken the piss with their offer I probably wouldn’t have even checked WBAC’s offer!

The WBAC price has steadily risen over the last six months so is probably a good indication that demand for used cars is high.

This will not be correct for premium/luxury brands where new cars will have made up the vast majority of their profitability for a long time vs other brands who's dealers will have needed to rely on used cars more to support heavy discounts to trade volume on new.

They re often more proactive about sourcing quality used stock because it s scarce and sells well.

Suspected cause
I suspect the price offered depends on how saleable they think your car is - I bought and sold a Boxster GTS 2024 car one year apart to/from a main dealer and it cost me £5k which I was very happy with

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yesterday I got a call from Porsche GB. I was dropping off my car today at OPC East London. The ask on the call was whether:
1. Do I want to sell my car - 991.1 C2S - 20K on the clock - still in warranty
2. If I did not want to sell am I interested in an upgrade.
This says 2 things to me - Porsche are not selling new cars (not exactly hard to fantom given the economy) - secondly Porsche are expanding their portfolio on the used market due to the drop in sales on the new market.
Anyone with more knowledge about this would be helpful.

1 and 2 are not mutually exclusive
They often use the "we are keen to buy your car" approach to get buyers on the hook. Had it twice over the years from Dick Lovett.
But you could be right re market pressures changing tactics.
Edited to add: and I ended up buying a newer car the first time. Can resist anything but temptation - and they knew it
Don’t think this is anything new. I’ve had similar calls/emails for years.
Also, don’t read “Do you want to sell your car?” as “We’re desperate for stock and will give you a great price”. I’ve enquired a couple of times when I received these “We desperately want your car” contacts from OPCs. The prices they offered were an embarrassment.
As mentioned above, it’s just a tactic to get you talking to them.
The difference between what Porsche offered me for my 992 GTS and what WBAC paid me was £7300. The WBAC price has steadily risen over the last six months so is probably a good indication that demand for used cars is high. You’d have to be mad to sell directly to Porsche, though - lowballing chancers.
Admittedly it was 7 months ago but a mate wanted to trade his low mileage 3yr old Macan S against an ex-demo 911. Despite the OPC telling him they were desperate for used stock, and his Macan was exactly the type of thing they were looking for, they offered £4.5K less than WBAC and Motorway and wouldn’t budge.
1) Sales tactic used to get you thinking about a new car when you a) don't need a new one and b) wasn't even seriously thinking about getting a new one.
And 2) Why get one commission / bid-ask spread from a customer when you can get two spreads?
I mean, fair play to the dealer. But whenever I get these emails they go straight into the garbage.
The lowest offer I got when selling my 991.2 was from where I bought it - an OPC.
Best price was from Motorway. When I contacted them the actual price they suggested selling it at was 10% less than the initial price quoted on their website. This was nothing to do with the specifics of the car. A friend recently had a similar experience.

Thanks all for the feedback. The irony is OPC gave me the best deal for my SL63 - about 6K over what anyone else was offering - when I traded in. That was in 2023.

I get this call literally every time my cars booked in, I don’t think it’s anything new or market specific.
You ll do much better selling to a specialist garage - Porsche want to clear 10k after prep and VAT, Indis work for less

A guy at work has just bought a used Macan GTS and was going to trade his Audi TT in against it but it would have left him a couple of grand negative equity so he sold it on Motorway and got £5k more than Porsche were offering him. I did say that it probably wouldn't be something they'd put on their forecourt so offered bottom book price.

It seems a risky business strategy to push people and cars out of the network. From a sales perspective you'd normally want to be in control of the whole process.

Well I assume they end up buying them back from auction at a far higher price than they offered me. Had they not utterly taken the piss with their offer I probably wouldn’t have even checked WBAC’s offer!
I’ll still buy another Porsche and I found the dealers to be ok, but perhaps they just rely on less savvy people just PXing against a new car.

I am not criticising your deal. If it worked for you and the dealer then great. But I do point out that this is an example as two transactions presented as one.
As already mentioned, 1 & 2 are not mutually exclusive. The sale margins on used cars are generally higher so it could indicate something else entirely including an opportunistic sales person.
I say this as a broad statement. Obviously options and vehicle exclusivity influence margins, but broadly, a dealer will make more money selling used than new.

Yes but separate legal entities I believe.
From Porsche GB’s website: “ Formed in 2003, Porsche Retail Group is a wholly owned subsidiary of Porsche Cars Great Britain. We represent seven Porsche Centres located in Guildford, Hatfield, Mayfair, Reading, West London, East London and South London.”

I'll let you do your own research on subsidiaries and legal entities. A company can be a subsidiary and a separate legal entity at the same time.

A couple of points. This will not be correct for premium/luxury brands where new cars will have made up the vast majority of their profitability for a long time vs other brands who's dealers will have needed to rely on used cars more to support heavy discounts to trade volume on new.
Additionally, OPCs need to provide a 2 year warranty on the used vehicle included in the purchase price. This is likely to be circa a couple of k before you've even started with any prep etc where OPCs will need to meet a higher standard than your standard independent. Just worth considering through that lens.
Finally, Porsche GB is not the same as Porsche Retail - East London is part of Porsche Retail Group not Porsche Cars GB (reference the original post).

I wouldn’t read too much into it. A low-mileage 991.1 C2S that’s still under Porsche warranty is exactly the sort of car an OPC wants on its forecourt. They’re often more proactive about sourcing quality used stock because it’s scarce and sells well. The upgrade question is just a natural follow-on if they can take your car in part exchange. It’s probably more a reflection of the desirability of your car than a sign Porsche can’t sell new ones.
Nothing new or indeed limited to Porsche.
No difference to the myriad of emails I get from large dealers I have used previously suggesting the best personal finance deal ever if I swop a certain car in shortly.
Just had one for my my wife’s RS4.

Thanks for the feedback all. I wonder if Porsche reach out to much older Porsche owners for example owners of 993s or 964s
Not uncommon in the trade. My JLR rang my wife last week to see if we would be interested in selling our Defender. Low stock on used and wanted to shift a few showroom cars.
