Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'Use $100' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use $100' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.
Source reports, not a diagnosis or a success probability. Counts refer to discussions and can overlap.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2001 996 cab. I just drove my friends 03 turbo. The shifting is substantially shorter that the 01. Really nice.
Can I get that same shift? Is there a short shift kit like on the early 911's?
Has anybody done it?
I'm in the middle of installing a SShift in my 2000 996. It's a B&M knock-off from ebay. All was going well, using B&M's inet instructions until I began bench- assembling the new parts into the porsche carrier. First; the chrome handle rattles in it's (red part) carrier. There are 3 washers that appear to be there to prevent this but maybe more needed? Second the handle is angled toward the driver not away as the stock one is. Third; the nut does not clear the plastic carrier. It can not be simply disassembled as the cross bolt is pressed in. Anyone done/seen this? jvm
As stated, you have a number of options. From cheapest to most expensive:
1) ebay knock off - jvmcnair's post should tell you why you should avoid these. Option 2 is just as cheap if you buy used.
2) B&M short shift. New $200 used $100. I just sold one for $100 because I didn't like the notchiness and the very high effort when cold. I daily drive my 996 and I felt it was slowing me down.
3) Porsche supplied - apparantly these are mde by B&M for Porsche, but the it's a different design somehow. This may have been what your buddy had in his Turbo...keep in mind that the Turbo trans is different from the NA 996 trans...and this may affect the shift feel. $400-ish is what I've heard.
4) 997 stock shifter - $400-ish used. Some say the 997 shifter is a perfect blend of stock and short shift feel.
5) 997 sport shifter - $500-ish - a sportier (shorter) version of the 997 shifter.
6) cup shifter....very sporty...probably not great for daily driving...but that's a personal thing.$1000?
The real upgrade apparently is to install cup cables at a cost of around $2000. These have metal ends rather than plastic ends which are used in all store bought cars right up to the GT3RS. The metal ends apparently feel rock solid.
I personally went back to my stock 996 shifter and I'll probably stay there. I did swap my trans fluid out for a stickier mix of redline oils which improves the feel.
Damn - just noticed this thread is 3 years old.
