Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So on my weekend trip the rearview mirror stopped working and leaked out whatever lcd fluid makes it work. So I need a new one. Are there any that have auto dimming and are affordable and even better would easily fit in the mounts I have? Or, since it's a cab, should I put a manual one in?

POST 2Original post

Go manual. It's cheaper and saves weight! I didn't even know that auto-dimming was an option.

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12627414

Yup, it was and I guess according to the build sheet I have auto dimming mirrors on the doors too. =) On the second part of my question though, will anything fit or are there specific ones or? I have the rain sensor too, so I can't replace the whole works.

POST 4Original post

You are sooo screwed That was virgin unicorn sperm that leaked out just take off the wheels and put on a whole new car

POST 5Original post

Anyway, why do you need dimming? Don't you know your car takes a depreciation hit if you drive it at night?

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12627475

I don't, but at this point the power is already going there and if there was an affordable dimming option I'd go with it.

POST 7Original post

It's a known problem. You can correct it through OBDII.

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 12627475

Oh yeah, forgot about the rain sensor option. We opted not to get that. I don't know of generic auto-dimming mirrors, but I suppose they may exist... I don't see why you couldn't switch to a old school mirror (generic or 996 specific), though as you'd still need to get wires to the rain sensor it may look a bit funny as the wires and sensor would be visible. Says the guy that drives his car that is currently for sale in the rain....

Aren't there any same era VW or Audi mirrors that would be a perfect, part-sharing fit?

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12627504

It is pretty handy, I have to admit. Makes it hard to go back to using regular wipers with regular manual settings. I'd call LN or Raby to see if they have a solution for this, but I don't know where I put my phone.

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 12627538

No offence bro/Bru/Bruh, It's hard to turn on the wipers manual like the rest of us? Just messin wit ya

POST 12Original post

If you want it fixed: http://sybesmas.com/ Many BMW owners have this issue and send it there. What they do is replace the autodimming fluid with LCD type dimming so that it never has a chance to leak out again. I'm not sure on the 996 mirror but I'm fairly positive they can also do that to it too.

POST 13Original post

I had an aftermarket auto-dimming mirror in my 996. It also had Homelink, which was nice. I bought it from www.radar-mirror.com . The downside of aftermarket mirrors is that they don't have the bayonet-style mount that Porsche uses. A horseshoe adapter is required, and that works okay. It's not as stable as the OE mirror. You might contact Scott at www.radar-mirror.com . I think they repair OE auto-dimming mirrors, and they can add Homelink to your existing mirror if you want it. Good luck. EDIT: I just checked their site. They will repair your factory auto-dimming mirror for $99.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12627581

It resets once the car is off, so the lever would need to be turned off/on again. But yes, it is hard to adjust the frequency of the wipers when you're used to the car doing all the work for you. =)

POST 15Original post

I thought this was a joke thread at first as I had no idea the self-dimming mirrors actually had fluid in them. Wow I guess I learn something new every day here.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 12627587

I was gonna mention this too but I believe they only repair your mirror and not do the LCD conversion. If a regular repair is done only, you have a chance to leak fluid later on as well. I had to replace my center console in my BMW as the fluid is acidic in nature and burn through the top layers of some of the trim. Not fun and the reason why I recommend the LCD conversion if available.

POST 17Original post

Right, I was just talking about the repair. I've seen one of their conversions where they add Homelink to an existing mirror, so that's the other thing that I mentioned.

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yeah the fluid is nasty stuff, but I think we wiped up most of it and I can't see any damage a day or two later.

POST 19Original post

Gentex mirrors seem to be popular. If one of them will work for you you could get Homelink and a compass and... http://www.6speedonline.com/forums/9...home-link.html

POST 20Original post

You need to call Jake and bitch at him about it. Seriously - I dare you.

POST 21Original post

If there is a leak, may be is too late, do not turn the auto-dimming function, on, check the LCD fluid for any pieces of glass, you may have to drop the whole rear view mirror for a complete inspection. If the damage burn the circuits inside the mirror, you have to consider either to repair or buy a new one. Good luck!!!

POST 22Original post

Quotes source post: 12628082

That's what I had in my 996.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 12628424

That's what I have as well ... Gentex auto-dimming mirror with compass and Homelink. I bought the mirror, wiring harness, and windshield mount adapter off eBay. It wasn't very expensive and works well; the only minor PITA was routing power from the center console up to the mirror (coupes have both switched and constant 12v power available from the dome light, but cabs do not). If you go this route, be sure to get the mirror mount adapter that uses set screws to tighten everything up. It takes some fiddling to get it into place, but is very secure and solid once it's installed. FWIW, Gentex mirrors have compass digits in different colors. Mine is amber and matches the dash illumination pretty well.

POST 24Original post

An Audi auto dimming mirror is interchangeable including the wiring harness connection. Get one from a C5 A6 or S6. I put one in my car, bought the OEM wiring harness and installed it. Such a great upgrade. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...buying-it.html

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Didn't call Jake, but did call my local shop. They had one from a while ago that was never used, going to get it to me for $35 later today after work. Then tonight that will allow me to act like a man and work on my car - or act like a man and bring it back to them so they can put it in. =) Now to get some gold leaf so I can plate the old one.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So calling the dealer tomorrow. I got a manual mirror which will work with some superglue (hey, it was $35) but doing that may or may not impact the side mirrors that may or may not still auto dim. **superglue meaning that the mount is different for those of us who have the auto mirror and those manual mirrors and I guess that having a rain sensor has something to do with it too. So the easy way is to cut the base/neck of the mirros and glue them together. Shouldn't be hard at all, and should work great. Just have to find out the conquences of unplugging the mirror first.

POST 27Original post

Why not just get a used auto dimming mirror especially if you have outside dimming mirrors? My Audi replacement mirror fit in exactly the same spot as my OEM non dimming mirror. It was super simple. Don't loose the function, you'll hate it at night with a SUV or truck behind you.

POST 28 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12632251

I'm going to track one down I think, but in the mean time $35 and a little glue will be good enough to get me going again. Or to have a spare if this happens in the future. Although it looks like the Audi mirrors aren't that much more expensive anyway...

Thanks! Not sure that mount will work though, I need to look into it more and it could be a winter thing. The Dreaded Stereo Replacement in the Jeep was more urgent this weekend due to me driving it for 2 hours tonight and 2 hours straight tomorrow.

POST 37Original post

If you had an OEM mirror before, it's the same exact mount and just rotates 90 degrees to get it off/on, the electrical connector is exactly the same for the Audi and Porsche mirrors.

POST 38 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12645347

Yeah, but I went down that road and I got a manual mirror that "should" have fit, however the rain sensor mount is different. Not saying a little superglue and sawing can't make it fit, but I'd rather not do that if possible.

POST 39 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Part #: 3C0-857-511-J That's the VW part number for mine. Not sure on price yet, going to do more research. I'm guessing now the original one failed, then they replaced it with a VW numbered part. [edit] Which turned out to be a dead end, and someone was selling the same mirror from a 997 for $200 so went and bought that. Again, if I didn't have the auto dimming side mirrors and rain sensor this would be a different discussion.

POST 40 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 12633348

Got the used one in the mail today. =) Good news is the mount fits and harness is the same. Bad news is they changed it enough so that the plastic cover dosent fit without a decent amount of dicking around, so blue electrical tape will have to work. It's not like I see that anyway. Good news is they can fix the old one, so going to get that done and now I'll have 2. =)
