Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.
Discussions that report identifying a cause

0 original-poster resolution reports. Counts can overlap; they are not unique people or a success rate.
0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.
Leading evidence: 'the' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'the' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check gauge speed against' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Both of the Porsches I have owned ran two miles faster than those electronic read outs.

You can check your speedo by using the Gear/RPM/ MPH chart in the owners handbook.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I am in need of some info/clarification. I have an 02' 986s and upon driving in my city, the local Law Enforcement officials tend to put out those radar machines that alert you to your current speed. I've noticed on a few occasions when I'm able to ride along the side of, lets say a Honda Civic, and notice that my speed is 2-3 mph faster than his speedometer reads. Now I thought I read on here somewhere that German automakers do this on purpose, maybe to aid in keeping your "AWESOME" machine under the speed limit thus preventing any tickets. Is this true? I was thinking it was due to the
tires
height on the 986s.
I look forward to you guys expertise and answers.

Check your gauge speed against
gps
. It might in fact read high.
BMW
does this, and I was able to code out most of the error ( at certain speeds, it was 5-7 mph higher!). I think this is an EU thing because the police are very intolerant of speeding. Go through a small town at 5mph over the limit and you will get a hefty ticket!
Both of the Porsches I have owned ran two miles faster than those electronic read outs. I was told and I believe it was mentioned on this board as being intentional.
It's a law thing, because at least in Germany the speedometer must never show a too low value. Therefore, car makers add some kph. Porsche is in fact very precise, compared to other car makers. I saw cars which show 15-20kph more at higher speeds.
For our cars: I measured a deviation of 10 kph whilst running 299kph with measured 289kph on my
iPhone
. On lower speeds, I measured a smaller deviation: At 244kph on the speedometer I did 240kph on the
iPhone
.
When you're running 50kph you'll see about 52, 53 in your Porsche.
I don't know about the speeding fines in the States but here in Switzerland 1kph too fast means 40$ already. So yes, the added speed is some kind of "security bonus"
Hey Guys;
In California, many schools have a digital sign posts your speed as you pass.
My Cayman's speedo is always says 2-3 MPH higher.
Re: speeding tickets;
Generally you won't get stopped for anything 5-6 MPH over the limit.
When it comes to the freeways, generally the CHP (California Highway Patrol) doesn't do anything if you don't interfere with the flow of traffic. They're [usually] good guys and are more interested in everyone's safety than what speed you're doing.
I've been in "a pod" many times where we're doing 80-85 MPH (70 is the speed limit down here - once you're between towns) and the CHP didn't even look.
BUT - do something that makes you stand-out (like being alone in the left lane and passing everyone - even if you're not going all that fast) and you're going to attract the attention of the CHP.
Often, those are the clowns that fly down the left lane until their exit is visible and then try to cross over 3-4 lanes to get off, causing it to look like a Christmas tree - with all the brake lights coming on, and royally messing-up the flow of traffic.

Yeah, it reads the same thing in my 08' 987 as well. Thought it was the different height
tires
on the Boxster S but now that I see this on the Cayman, I guess it's a preventitive thing. Not that I'm complaining though. Thanks for all the repiles guys. Y'all are the BEST!!!
You can check your speedo by using the Gear/RPM/ MPH chart in the owners handbook. Because of the small speedo in the Cayman, I drive using the tech & MPH read out.
IIRC my Cayman is 5-8 km/h (3-5 mph) on the speedo throughout the speed range compaerd to
GPS
. Even at almost 290 km/h (180 mph) it is about the same amount off.
I read that in Germany there are steep fines against auto manufacturers if the speedo ever reads slower than the actual speed. They must take into account the absolute largest tire/wheel combo that will fit on the car as this would cause a lower reading. The built in speedometer error is to account for this.
Sounds reasonable.
Its not just the law in Germany but in the US as well. Automakers can not make the speedo read lower than the actual speed on a stock equipped car. All cars have built in cushion of a few %
points
. I think i read the average comes out to be between 2 and 4% off so @ 50 your speedo says 52ish and @ 100 your speedo is more like 104.
Atleast these arent motorcycles were the % off on some of those is closer to 10-15%. I remember my YZF600R would read 60 and i was actually doing around 52-53
Just another data point: in my 09 Cayman using a handheld
Garmin GPS
, at 70mph indicated on the speedo the
Garmin
showed 67.5 mph.
