Also, won't let any United fuel near any of my cars these day, unless no alternative and I'm running on fumes.

I've also used BP Ultimate diesel almost exclusively in my Territory for last couple of years now after I did some research on United, which was offered big discounts through RACT.

Suggestion
I work in the Oil and Gas sector (but I don't work for an Oil company) - my advice is to use BP Ultimate, I've talked to many petrochemical engineers who specialise in refining and thats the product they recommend within the Australian market - tied back to the base product, the refining process, additives etc.

Suggestion
They must be able to get immediate test results, as when the sample results get down to unacceptable (nearing the bottom of the tanks presumably), they stop taking the fuel (I assume this is BP & Caltex) and then Tassie's local discount fuel supplier comes in and starts filling up.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Have seen a couple of threads that had some discussion on the subject of fuel choice but none squarely dealing with it and mainly to do with air cooled cars.
So, what brand of 98 fuel do you use for your water cooled car and why?
I have to date used Shell V-Power because there is a station close to me and because my cars have always run fine on it, but the posts I refer to above suggest BP Ultimate might be best.

One thing I can confirm is that is cost far more than it should and we get screwed at the pump real hard ........
The tax we have on fuel is significant, probably only exceeded by the Europeans
A bigger issue we have in Australia is the rapidly diminishing refining capacity we have - Australia is becoming totally reliant on refining out of Singapore, with refineries in Brisbane and Sydney being closed and turned into tank farms. We have around 30 days feed stock - so if someone decided to mine the Singapore straights Australia finds itself in a significant predicament. The defence force is useless without AVGas or Diesel product. Refining needs to be mandated as critical infrastructure and protected by the govt.
Amazes me how the worlds most resource rich country is so rooted when it comes to energy; we struggle to generate electricity and have handed over reliance on petroleum products to the Oil companies.
We only use BP Ultimate or Caltex. Were warned off Shell by a P workshop which says they have a regular stream of cars coming in with fuel problems, nearly all of which seem to have been using Shell. Now this was 3 or 4 years ago, but we've steered clear anyway. Anyway, BP is closest service station to home, and our local Woollies aligned Caltex doesnt; carry 98. Whether there is any difference in quality between Woollies Caltex and proper Caltex I don;t know, and who knows what will happen to BP when they become the Woollies aligned brand.
I've also used BP Ultimate diesel almost exclusively in my Territory for last couple of years now after I did some research on United, which was offered big discounts through RACT. Anyway, BP has become more price competitive these days, plus link up with Virgin points and able to use AMEX, so this makes them my usual choice for all our cars
Sadly Bad leadership mate Australia could be a world leader with its abundance of resources ,,,,we shouldn,t be in the current situation with shortages of energy requirements in this country we should an be a glowing example to the rest of the world .................The situation with our refining capacity is ridiculous as per usual ,,,,like you said imagine if the flow of fuel stopped for what ever reason we would be rightly screwed ...............I am certain our quality leaders know better than us , while they are shagging staffers and living it up on the tax payers ..............
Shell 98 is out of the equation now with me on cost excess. Have been using Caltex/Woollies but Woollies is now aligning with BP so will probably go with them.
It is why prices between Caltex and BP have been discounted more than Shell.
I used to use Caltex 98 from a local independent station, but since I moved suburbs I now only use BP 98, for the reasons mentioned by
@Ozvino
Also along the lines of
@TwoHeadsTas
is the bonus of Virgin/ Amex points (it quickly adds up!).
I did not think that the takeover by BP of Woolworths petrol had been approved as yet?
For all those complaining about how expensive 98 is, check the prices in Tas...... we have always been ripped off for all fuels down here.....
I use Caltex 98 because the BP is holding the price up in town.
I don't use the independent in town because the once I did for 95 In an older vehicle it smelled like E10. It ran like shit for ages.
There must be good fuel in most of them though.
98 was $1.58 today ,,,,,,similar to Hobart ,,the biggest thing that Piss Sydney motorists off is the fluctuation in prices next week could be 20 c a liter less its all over the place you just never know what going on ..
I think last I filled up was $1.67 or something, we don't get fluctuations here, always the same high price...... interesting as the barrel price has stayed pretty low form what I remember but fuel keeps going up!!
Yes that is what gets Sydney motorists so fired up the barrel price has been pretty consistent but the pump price can go up and down over night 15 to 20 cents a liter and then back down again ,,it is just blatant price gouging and rubbing it in the motorists face ..
Filled 996 up on Sunday, think it was around $1.64........ As Adam says, we're usually pretty consistent (ly expensive) down here, but we don;t get the Friday price rises so the weekend fill up costs you more
Here's a datapoint on my past experience.
On my old R32 skyline I had a failing fuel pump, when on BP 98 it would never ping, but on V-Power it would ping slightly. Used BP ever since. (although this was about 8 yrs ago)
This lead me to believe BP was ever so slightly higher octane than v-power.
hell you could probably run old 996 base carreras on 95 (but.. i'd still run 98)
Well said
@Ozvino
Hopefully Jim Molan can bring some attention to this.
How would we all feel about paying a few (?) cents/L more for a locally refined product?
Every time i got the petrol station my hand shakes every time i had over the card to pay :(... but i've been using shell and contemplating switching to BP just for their APP lol.
Actually this is worse! At least with most oil threads there is one or two facts spread in with the 100 odd old wife's tales that sometimes can be of use.
Unless there is some statistically valid sampling and testing it's pretty hard to come up with any definitive. Not in the realm of possibility for most. Hearsay just causes unwarranted anxiety.
Follow the manufacturers recommendation with regard octane. No point buying higher than recommended.
Buy a reputable brand
Buy from a reputable retailer.
We are fooling ourselves if we think we can do any more than this.
In the Porsche, United 95, cos that's what they bloke who did the engine rebuild stuck in it.
Plus Winnie blues are relatively cheaper at United than shell or bp
All the United Fuel servos in Tassie seem to have Indians behind the counter......
Paid 166.9 tonight
@ BP
when I filled up missus' Boxster
Also, won't let any United fuel near any of my cars these day, unless no alternative and I'm running on fumes. Nothing to do with who is behind the counter, I just believe BP or Caltex have the higher refining standards......
I use petrolspy to locate cheapest price and RACV to keep an eye on retail/wholesale price to gauge bottom of cycle. Trouble is companies have now stretched the cycle from 2 weeks to 1.5 months so I take a couple of jerry cans to last out the cycle.
ironically.. i just pumped some BP 98, and engine is pinging very slightly.
bought some octane boost, and it's fine now, dont know if it was a bad batch or I have a failing fuel pump.
Heard an interesting story over the weekend. A mate's brother-in-law moonlights for one of the petrol companies (in some mechanic type role I understand). When a fuel tanker arrives in Devonport a couple of them are sent down to sample fuel as it's being unloaded. They must be able to get immediate test results, as when the sample results get down to unacceptable (nearing the bottom of the tanks presumably), they stop taking the fuel (I assume this is BP & Caltex) and then Tassie's local discount fuel supplier comes in and starts filling up. I believe they pay 1/2 price, or at least much less than normal price the others pay....... Now, not sure if this relates to Diesel or Unleaded, but........
In VIC, there's 2 refineries so you're buying either Mobil or Shell (unless you're buying United - who does?).
The only difference is the squirts of additives they spray in at the terminal gate.
So if you want certainty, buy Mobil from 7-Eleven or buy Shell. Otherwise, BP or Caltex etc are one or the other of Mobil or Shell with maybe slightly different herbs and spices.
So basically it's price. I buy Mobil.
