I cleaned the sump plate and its mounting surface (the last time using alcohol), applied hondabond HT, fit the plate back on using some studs to help, screwed in all new bolts and torqued them to 90 in-lbs.

Highly recommend the superceded sump plate with a recess for bolt heads.

Suggestion
My guess...someone lost the original bolt and replaced with the closest thing they had that was the same length (hopefully).

I was able to get all the various sump plate bolts off successfully which was a feat given that three of them were seriously messed up from run-ins with stuff on the road.
Use alcohol), applied hondabond ht, fit the plate back

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So while taking off the sump plate (oil pan) I noticed that (only) one of the bolts holding it on is not an M6 (10mm socket). It instead looks like some sort of inverted torx or star bolt head and is much smaller than 10mm, maybe 8mm.
Has anyone ever come across this and happen to know what kind of socket I should use on it ?
The mk1 996's came with 10mm hex head. If PO/shop working on the car lost the screw and ordered a replacement, it would be shipped as what you have installed, which is a deep chamfer inverted torx. (There are different types of inverted torx heads)
The M6 thread, pitch, and length is all the same - just a different head size. Nothing to worry about.
Thanks for the help everyone. I was able to get all the various sump plate bolts off successfully which was a feat given that three of them were seriously messed up from run-ins with stuff on the road. Amazingly all the threads on the engine side of things seemed fine. I cleaned the sump plate and its mounting surface (the last time using alcohol), applied hondabond HT, fit the plate back on using some studs to help, screwed in all new bolts and torqued them to 90 in-lbs. Hopefully it the plate wont leak once I put the new oil in! The hondabond fully cures in 3 days so I'm just waiting for now.
Highly recommend the superceded sump plate with a recess for bolt heads. The right driveway curb will catch those exposed bolts and cause big problems. Ask me how I know!
I already installed the old-style sump plate so I'm going to take a pass our your offer Kris. Thank you though.
I'm thinking I may make my own protective skid plate. They seem pretty simple.
