I have a
987.2 Cayman
R that did not come from the factory with the in-dash, swing out cup holders. I also have an S that does have them, and I really use them a lot on trips, or whenever. Does anyone know if you can retrofit the cupholders into a
Cayman
that didn’t have them originally? It seems as if the cupholder mechanism itself is a simple slide in/slide out deal. It is the body colored front trim pieces that would be tricky because the body colored trim piece in my
Cayman
R is one long piece, whereas it would have to be three separate pieces in order for the cupholder to work correctly. (PS… I looked at simply installing the popular seat rail cupholder from a certain manufacturer, however, I understand it does not work with manual adjust adjustable seats.) Thanks for any thoughts.
I expect the R removed them because it's an R... weight reduction, etc being the goal...
I can't speak to whether it's possible to restore it. My guess is you'd need to remove the trim there, and look to see if there is space - I expect it's still there. The cup holder then slides in and screws into position with two screws from the bottom, through the metal brass holes, so check to make sure those holes are there as well. And, if you can, check to make sure the screw holes are in there to engage with.
You can see the brass holes in my for-sale listing, on the last picture:

- this is still available if you're interested!
I agree, I am very happy with those cup holders. Many people are "afraid" of them or whatever, but I find they work damn well, and even hold my larger drinks without issue. It does look floppy, but it works well.
FWIW, the R and
Spyder
both omitted the holders for maximum weight savings (or so they claimed). I mention that only to point out that if it matters to you the best resale value would be in choosing the temporary holder and leaving the OEM mechanism as is.
Although, if it's just a matter of removing the trim and putting in the part... it should be easy enough to reverse when selling?
I have them and the are great. I'll accept the 2lbs they maybe add.
Actually I have seen some R’s with the cup holders, and some without; so I guess it could be optioned back in (like AC and Radio) for those who treasured them
(I agree, I think it is a brilliant design and they work well, albeit, they don’t look like they would).
But officer, the car gained two pounds, my spirited acceleration was merely to learn how to account for the weight gain and commensurate reduction in vital power to weight ratio.
I've got the cup holders in my
2016 Cayman
S, but they seem flimsy and not that useful. I also have a RennMount wireless phone charger hanging on my glove box, so that kind of blocks the cup holder.
RennMount and others sell those plastic cup holder that you slide up in the trim. I've got a couple of those and they work great.
"Seem" flimsy - as in never tried them? They actually work quite well, I've never had any issue including using my large BMW thermal mug in the driver's one. Can go right around corners and the cup stays where it belongs. Someone actually tested these before producing them.
