I habitually check the level after a drive, but the real annoyance is warming the engine after an oil change.

Suggestion

This seems like a waste of time and fuel just to check the oil.

Suggestion

I wonder how many non-enthusiasts with these cars don’t ever bother to check the oil because of the sequencing?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I have owned a 987.1 S for last 10 years. When I turn the ignition key to the Acc position (not starting engine), the Oil Level bar graph shows up on the screen to show you approximate engine oil level - very handy, and it takes seconds. I just purchased a 2012 987.2 and it does not do this as far as I can see. The only reference the owners manual mentions as far as oil level is to go into the menu and select “Oil”, with engine idling, then waiting 4-5 minutes for a reading to appear. This seems like a waste of time and fuel just to check the oil. Am I missing something?

POST 2Original post

Electronic sequence? I just use the dipstick on my 987.2 . (JK) The oil needs to be up to temperature, car needs to be on a flat surface and the countdown game is the only way to get the “ bars” report. Put in the best light it’s what helps make the car feel exotic. 😎

POST 3Original post

I think @daneav8 was expressing wonder and frustration over the differences in delay between the seemingly minor generational differences of the 987. I can only offer the guess that when Porsche did the major redesign going from the M97 to the 9A1 engine, they decided the new methodology was more accurate, if less convenient. Of course it gets weirder yet since the 9A1 in the 981 has a different process which involves opening the trunk to force a new measurement.🤪

POST 4Original post

For all who grew up with dipsticks: “On the first part of the journey, I was looking at all the life”. All of us Mr. Monk mechanics (most of this board) sit as the timer counts down, listening to every click like any good heart surgeon M. D. “motor doctor”. I wonder how many non-enthusiasts with these cars don’t ever bother to check the oil because of the sequencing?

POST 5Original post

Yep that's the 987.2 process. I habitually check the level after a drive, but the real annoyance is warming the engine after an oil change.
