Pretty cool old FS post I found regarding Jake’s 996.1 that set the land speed record. Wondered if any members on RL own this car or if it is still out there? It would be interesting to see if it’s been upgraded to a 3.6 or 3.8 build from Jake. That would be a great car to own! Very interesting read on the build specs that got them to the land speed record. Shows how long Jake has been innovating http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsc...-upgrades.html

POST 2Original post

I know the car, its owned by a guy in RI I run at the track with, nice guy. He sent me his mod list asking for advice on making his car faster and it looks largely similar to what was reflected in the FS post. Here's my favorite picture of it. And another:

Pretty cool to see this car is still out there and getting track use. Is he still on the stock 3.4 block? I’m guessing if the mod list matches up (on the engine side of things) it still probably is. I think that definitely is the car, I spot some GT3 buckets in the photo too, which the old post had a shot of them as well. Would love to see him get on RL and hear any future progression of the car from then to now. Thanks for sharing zbomb

Excellent video, really enjoy your YouTube channel. Never really added much on my account, but I believe we run the same resonators in our exhaust system too. I incorporated the total flow resonator to a fabspeed muffler delete pipe and coupled it to my 200 cell x pipe, fvd headers. Here’s some light cruising before logging my car. You Tube Looking forward to hearing more from the gentleman with Jakes old car. Wonder if he purchased directly or if he got it from another seller over the decade of time that’s passed.

POST 6Original post

It was actually my wife's car, I never even drove it on the track. The records the car set are hers, and still stand in 4 different classes. About 5 years after she set the records the LSR organization lost the track, and all the records were archived. A few people got close to a couple of the records, but never broke them in that 5 years. Some of those records were for alcohol fueled engines, but she ran gasoline, and even those records were not broken. She also set some in the classes for 4+ liter engines, and those still stand. The last one was set while my wife was pregnant with our daughter, we just didn't know it yet. Today Ava is following in her mom's shoes, and she also builds her own engines for her Odyssey, and Jr. Dragster. The car has had the hell beat out of it. After it was sold, it hit the wall and was repaired. The engine should not be alive. It is also very weak compared to what we build today, at max it made 288 RWHP, and today we smash that with every build from this generation of engine. It had a lot of experimental stuff done that really didn't work too well, and never made it to market. I can't believe that engine hasn't blown up, at this point it has to be exceptionally tired. Once my wife got sideways at 140 MPH, and was too busy to shift, so the engine revved over 8,500 RPM for 4-5 seconds. Her rev limiter was turned off completely. A throwback from 2008 550 pound machine with an Ava Raby built, 10,000 RPM 400cc 2 stroke engine making 70HP. Ava starts competitive racing in the 2022 season with a 40HP alcohol fueled single cylinder 4 stroke.. Loosely based from a 5HP Briggs and Stratton. She just earned her NHRA competition license last fall.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Jake, thank you for sharing as well. It would certainly be cool to see the current owner do a refresh in the future with one of your 3.6 or 3.8 builds, for this vehicle with this kind of personal history. The records are impressive your wife was able to achieve with this car, in a relatively stock form. I could only imagine what this could’ve achieved with a current day build-track performer, with the significantly increased powerband under the curve. Pretty cool how Ava has the passion you and your wife share, and that she’s not afraid to take a hands on approach to build and learn- nice to see that in a younger generation for a change. It’s always very interesting to see how much more we’ve learned about these cars over a decade, and how many new points of failure we have to be mindful of as owners. It’s a great way to evolve as these vehicles continue age. You contribution to the m96 community is always very appreciated

The old car has had 2-3 owners since my wife sold it. The most recent contacted me a while ago. My daughter is a driver, much like my wife. I personally don't care about the driving part, I like to fight the physics. That works good, since I can focus on making things be fast, and last, and they can drive them. My daughter has a good mix of being a normal kid, and being a driver that knows how to work on her own stuff. She plays a lot, but to afford that privilege she has to work in the shop, as well as doing sorting of files for my wife's accounting business. She sometimes answers submission tickets for me, and the customer has no idea that they are talking to a 10 year old that has already built a Porsche engine by herself, having more direct experience that 80% of those who call themselves our competitors.

For sure! We are waiting to see if her "Hagerty Garage" project is still a "GO" for Porsche Parade with PCA Juniors.. If so, she'll be there with her "Mechanical Kids" experience.

POST 11Original post

Jake I really appreciate you sharing your relationship with your daughter here. It's inspiring for me as a dad of a 3 year-old. He helped me put his little library together the other day; started hand-threading all of the little screws into their pre-drilled holes so dad could have an easier time with the screwdriver. Seeing your posts has me itching to take him into the shop with me.

POST 12Original post

Quotes source post: 17947725

I would not hesitate. I grew up helping my dad working on his cars and passing him tools while he was in the canal. That's right, no lifts back then. I attribute my ability to work on cars and other mechanical things to him and the time spent in a cold garage. Good times and memories for sure.

POST 13Original post

I can see "daddy Jake" being the Crew Chief for the next Shirley Muldowny !!! Retire Hell !!

POST 14Original post

I doubt either of my daughters will take over my business but would be proud if they did. We need everyone anyone who has the aptitude and will to do this work any of the trades. The ladies can do it. Thats very cool what she can do. You have to be proud.

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source post: 17947495

Very cool Jake, youve taught her well, and Id certainly say youve passed the passion down for all things mechanical. Would love to see her project.

POST 16Original post

Quotes source post: 17947977

She makes me very proud. shes way too smart to run this place. I would never cast that shadow of punishment over her. When I was a teenager I worked for a guy who knew I wanted my own shop. He warned me and told me not to do it. I didnt listen, but I should have. If people are this bad to work with today, Id only imagine how much worse theyll be by the time Ava would have the reins. I have her work with me so we can spend time together, and so she learns personal responsibility through practical application. Also, she gets to experience failure and things blowing up, and theres no replacement for those lessons. I dont want her to be a racer, or engine builder. What I do want is for her to experience things that no other kid will.

POST 18Original post

Can attest to that- I'm 27- dad's still my best friend to this day. Many memories passing him tools in our garage on his '87 325i e30 (original owner, still has it) at a young age. Almost crushed his skull dropping the trans on my e39 540i when we were prying at it and it finally gave - slipped off the jack we had under it and chipped the garage floor about 2 inches from my father's head. We both laughed about it and he gave me a sip of his beer afterwards - think I was like 17 at the time. This is part of the reason I really hope EVs don't completely take over (though they very well may). There are relationships, bonds, etc. that are formed over cars and that's really what it's all about.... Thanks for sharing Jake.

POST 19Original post

Quotes source post: 17949011

Ahh the bond between father and child. Formed over the shared experiences plugging in the tesla to the wall outlet.

POST 20Original post

I see this entire EV thing as a fad that seems popular, because on the surface it looks better for the environment. I think this swing to the EV will be met with a swing back to ICE a few years after these EVs are in place. Once the government subsidies, tax breaks, and etc wear off, people will be left with vehicles that are bankrupt when they need batteries. I like the idea of driving around a golf cart on steroids, but not in mass. I would not mind doing an EV conversion on a couple of my cars, but you won't see me driving one everyday. What I want to see is what happens when all the cars sitting on the 405 freeway in traffic for 2 hours each day do to the electrical grid when all those people get home, and plug them up. The traffic jams then move from the highway to the electric grid. Or, how about people caught in traffic in cold weather, having to run the heat for extended durations to stay warm. What happens when their batteries die, and hundreds of cars are all dead at once? Then a diesel tow truck shows up to haul them away, rolling coal while hauling them off to be charged.... The same thing could happen in hot summer, in traffic running AC, especially if someone's batteries are weaker when they hit the traffic stand still. I'm not electric genius, but my grandfather was over 100 years ago when he build the power plant that provided power to the first complete community in the world to have full electrical power to all houses and businesses. I have thought way ahead of this thing, and have a couple patents in the wings related to it. Ava is very god with electrical circuits, and she builds them using STEM projects all the time. She and I had the idea together, and if granted both our names will be listed on the "Inventor" line.

POST 21Original post

And what's interesting is that the marketing is completely off for these things (at least for the Tesla IMO). I'm not sure if you've driven a Tesla, but honestly, they are pretty sweet. But to your point, they're marketing them as being good, environmentally friendly cars for people to buy and help the environment (from what, I ask... Seriously, lol - the harmful emissions!!!). The truth is, they're f*cking sweet cars that are pretty interesting to learn about. They are nowhere near as fun as something fuel injected and makes noise though.... I do believe oil is finite (very big picture....). I could be wrong on that. I also don't want gas prices to get out of hand because they want to make a push to EV and basically force everyone to go that route. I hope gas is not considered a luxury in the future, but I doubt that will happen. It's just wild to think about. I mean CA just passed something where - I think - in 5 years they will no longer sell any new gas-powered cars in the entire state of CA. I personally think that's a tree-hugger PR move and can obviously be changed in the future, but still....

POST 22Original post

Look up Porsche Biofuel. Long after petroleum has been banned, we will have biofuel. Porsche wants to make sure of it, to the point that they will be supplying engines to Red Bull in F1, but is demanding the use of biofuel. It's already a reality in the Porsche cup series. Soon to be a reality with IMSA and WEC. It's the intermediate term future in addressing all of the used ICE powered cars on this planet. Long-term, I have no clue. Biofuel for ICE, biofuel for hybrids. Electric for golf carts, vacuum cleaners and hair dryers. Imagine a technical article on Tesla's electric motor versus Porsche's. I can't think of anything more uninteresting.

POST 23Original post

Quotes source post: 17952566

I'm definitely curious in this and have been following. My biggest question is how will this trickle down to regular guy like you and I and what distribution will look like. That said, with Jakes predictions none of this will matter because engines will wear out, there will be no more parts available and a proper rebuild will be hard to come by if not impossible.

POST 24Original post

Quotes source post: 17952587

Pete, From a biofuel standpoint it goes like this. F1, IMSA, WEC, etc. All adopt it because it's the politically correct thing to do. When they adopt it, it will force all of the petroleum providers who are partners with each of the race teams to provide biofuel as well. It moves from being race fuel to eventually being mass produced and adopted mass scale by the political class because it's politically correct forcing the sale of it thru regulatory changes and even tax breaks for consumers to adopt it and energy companies to manufacture it. Petroleum isn't going away, it's just dying a slow death over the next few decades because biofuel will be more expensive at first than gasoline. Wait till the greenies find out about biofuel. They don't know about it yet, nor understand it. Most folks don't. But they will... Regarding the availability of car parts, it's a short-term bottle neck that will end slowly, but will end over the next 2 years. The developed world embraced manufacturing efficiency and profitability with "Just-In-Time" manufacturing and inventory management. The problem is that the egg heads who developed the methodology never factored in a pandemic of which the world's politicians would panic to the point of shutting down the entire global economy. This wreaked havoc with the entire supply chain of which it's still trying to get back online. The fiscal stimulus checks added fuel to the fire by increasing demand. Go figure. It will eventually end, aided quite a bit with a global recession in the next 1.5 to 3 years due to high inflation and monetary tightening. I know, it looks dire right now with the supply chain. But the logjam will end. Seems that businesses are being cautious not to over produce in relation to demand. Right now, big business is very profitable. This will end, and they will be looking for new sources for revenue growth and will expand production. Case in point, watch Bosch, once revenue growth and profits begin to slow, they will revisit areas of their business that they have forgotten. If they don't, the activist investment community will get involved and beat them over the head to find ways to generate more revenue and earnings. Just the way the world works.

POST 29Original post

People conveniently overlook that electric cars are not really "zero emissions". In reality they move the emissions to a different place, with varying amounts of total system efficiency. There are pluses and minuses of every solution and this one is not exempt from that.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 17953270

Yeah exactly... case in point... harmful emissions in one way or another...

POST 31Original post

Quotes source post: 17953270

Where I live most of our electricity (95%) is generated by renewable sources, mostly hydro power, so, much less polluting than burning fuel in a car engine. Even in Texas, more than 20% of your power comes from renewable sources, and that number is increasing all the time. Yes, coal and NG plants pollute, but generally a coal plant is about 35-40% efficient, and NG plants can be up to 60% efficient (I don't know about this plant specifically). Internal combustion engines are about 20-30% efficent, so even if you're using power soley generated by this plant to power your electric car you're at worst equivalent (electric cars aren't 100% efficient, either, please don't make me do the math), or more likely ahead. And not all of your power is generated there, so your net power efficency is actually higher than whatever this plant delivers, and climbing with each new renewable power project that comes online. I don't want to argue either way, but just wanted to present the idea that buring fuel in your car for power and buring fuel in a power plant for power aren't equivalent from an efficiency standpoint. But, yes, I agree with your point that we should do away with coal-fired power plants and replace them with renewables (maybe I read between the lines there) .

POST 32Original post

The most environmentally friendly thing to do is keep an existing car on the road and in good repair for as long as possible. Manufacturing costs (both financial and environmental costs) of new vehicles, ICE or EV, are insane. If you must replace an existing vehicle and an EV works for you it's still a better choice than ICE and I hope to see more on the road in the future.

Yes, I'm sure you're right. It's not something that a lot of people acknowledge, though, or maybe don't know about. Some people seem to think that we're just moving the source of pollution to a different location and everything else is the same. Several others commented in this thread from that POV, so maybe at least one person will start to think about the issue from a different perspective. It's obviously very complex, there are a lot of factors to take into account (including manufacturing, as pointed out above), but the choice of an EV becomes more 'environmentally friendly' every day, even in places like Texas. Having said that, sometimes moving the source of the pollution away from city streets and population centers is worthwhile in and of itself...

Are you in the energy or pollution field?

POST 36Original post

I am in the energy field, I manufacture products for the electrical generation and distribution industry. I am acutely aware of the difference between the "point source" of emissions that a car represents vs. the power plant source. In some cases shifting all of the emissions to a central point is beneficial as it's easier to control and maintain one emission control system vs. millions of distributed emissions control systems in independent vehicles. What burns my biscuits is when too many people start believing that electrically powered anything represents a zero emissions device.

POST 37Original post

So where is this all going? What do we look like in 10-20 years?

POST 38Original post

Electric motor cars are here to stay and will eventually (10 years? 15? 20? Who knows, but eventually) completely replace the traditional gasoline/diesel engine in every new car. I don't think using batteries as an energy storage solution is going to last though, unless huge advances in energy storage technology happen quickly. I predict advances in on-demand energy production (hydrogen powered generators for example) will happen faster than battery technology will progress. I could even see biofuel powered ICE engines used to make power to drive electric motors.

POST 39Original post

I gotta agree with you, given the battery/energy storage limitations we have, it looks like hybrid is the reality for now. There has to be a reason why Porsche is getting back into hybrid technology racing with biofuel in F1.

POST 40Original post

Hydrogen is the absolute worst. There are only 3 little problems with it. #1, all the hydrogen available on the Earth has already been burned. To turn it into fuel it needs to be unburned. #2, hydrogen has the largest explosive range of any known substance. #3, hydrogen molecules are so small they can diffuse through solid steel; the COPV pressure vessels needed have a limited fatigue life. I worked on a project in college to design a transportable device that would convert natural gas to hydrogen to feed a fuel cell in a reasonable manner. Our device worked, mostly. The trouble was that the conversion isn't as complete as would be desired and the hydrogen is polluted with carbon monoxide that quickly kills the fuel cell. We worked on a catalytic converter that was designed to convert the CO into CO2. The industrial process that uses this conversion benefits from an unlimited amount of space and power to get rid of the CO in the H2 stream, the constraints of mounting this type of equipment into a practical vehicle are huge. Otherwise you are limited to carrying tanks of hydrogen around - see problems #2 and #3. IMO a vastly better approach is to burn the natural gas directly in a spark ignition piston engine or a small turbine. The engines exist, the infrastructure exists. The concept isn't sexy enough to attract the R&D money that wound be needed to make it a better solution; the major trouble as I understand it is NOx emissions.

POST 41Original post

Speaking of hydrogen, there is a pretty funny video of a guy taking the hydrogen powered Toyota Mirai on a road trip. His experience included a hotel stay because the hydrogen station was empty and not due to be refilled till the next day. Additionally, both tanks apparently need to "equalize" in order to fill the car with hydrogen and the whole process takes a while. Good idea but horrible execution. We've been conditioned for years that you can fill up your tank in minutes. Stuff like that won't fly, especially for the general public.

No, just a concerned citizen of the world, as we all should be.

POST 43Original post

Thanks for allowing me to be able to cross hydrogen off the list. So where does it go? Hybrids with biofuel that store exhaust and brake energy just like prototype race cars? Does somebody invent a battery that can actually store energy? Or do the greenies win out in the USA and convince folks to take public transportation?

When my wife was doing the Land Speed Racing I filed for a permit to make our own fuel, using a distillery and some corn.. basically high grade moonshine for fuel.. We wanted to grow the corn on the property where the shop Is located, distill it and then set records with it. I filed for that in 2009 and just received notice today that the permit was granted! I had forgotten all about it until this thread reminded me.. I looked into it and boom it happened. Looks like its time to build a still..

By law the alcohol made for fuel has to be denatured so it isnt possible for human consumption.

With your engineering skills I bet you can turn it into a whiskey stil! 😊

I feel like there are options, but the biggest issue will be infrastructure. We could keep burning fossil fuels, but we need a way to make them carbon neutral (like wood for example). The other way is to make it much more effective (fusion & nuclear). Having most of our current technology (and I mean almost everything) based on non-renewable / finite resources is not a good idea - business wise or ecologically.

An agent is added to make the product denatured. Ironically the FSI property used to be home to my grandfathers liquor operation. He had stills here till the mid 1980s when he finally retired.. He never had a job.. or a drivers license, or a social security number I still have his mash recipes. but the fuel operation will be ran by the book.

Jake, all whiskey joking aside, what are your thoughts on what Porsche is doing with biofuel?

POST 51Original post

Damn, Jake I was hoping to see you on Moonshiners sometime soon!😉

More marketing hype, I think. Everyone is about talking today, there's less doing. I don't sit around and read, I'm too busy breaking the rules. I don't follow anything about new cars, even a 991 is too new for me to be interested in.

Sounds like the acquisition of farm equipment and the ability to make biofuel suggests you are "prepping" for the next phase of the mess we are in.

POST 54Original post

Quotes source post: 17965023

I've been making Biodiesel for my farm equipment for years. Nothing like plowing a field smelling Chinese food, or fried chicken for hours. The issue is that I cut it with methanol, so I need to be able to make the alcohol, to make the biodiesel. Yeah, when they cut off our fuel supply to abolish ICE powered cars, I'll be the only guy left on the road, but of course they'd call that tax evasion, since the fuel isn't taxed. They have a testicular vice in place.

POST 55Original post

I am a little more optimistic that biofuel will become a mainstream reality in combination with more fuel efficiency thru hybrids and yes, electric powered vehicles for local travel. Looking forward to watching the progress that is made with the different racing series, which oil companies push back, which none have so far, and ultimately how and when it's rolled out for consumption. It will however, increase demand for specific grains which will move us towards creating more farmland. It will also force the oil industry to become multi-faceted energy companies thru R&D and acquisition. It will also force huge change and innovation in the auto manufacturing and auto component manufacturing business. But that's another topic. Keep plugging. We need your innovation.
