Suggestion
I personally can't stand the 911 lazy turn in and don't need the extra traction when finally balanced compared to how a mid engine changes direction but that's pretty subjective/personal.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I can spend up to £50k, but rather it was nearer 40k on a Porsche.
I'n not great on the different models but it has to be manual and convertible, what would you get? (I was also thinking S for the extra power)
I will use to commute (only 15miles each way) and do around 8k miles per year.
I'm used to driving cars that other might find uncomfortable (Atom), so ultimate luxury not a concern, but I would need to consider re-sale value if missing options make it harder to sell later on.
Any suggestions gratefully received.
996 turbo /997 turbo (might be too much) / boxster gts or r8 v10 spyder
there's not a huge amount of choice in that price bracket for convertable manuals with a bit of power

Thanks for the replies, has to be 911 as it has 4 seats (kids!)
The rear seats in convertible 911s are pretty unusable as they are more upright than the ones in coupes, I would try to see if your kids will actually fit first.

£50k might get you close to a 991.1 cab - you'd need to shop around.
I have one, but if your child is over 3 months old, I doubt it'll fit.
Luckily I have small children! I have another car for back-up when needed. 911 will be used to pick them up from clubs etc.

981 Boxster GTS or 718 Boxster S if you can find one. You might be able to get into a 718 Boxster GTS (2.5) if you try hard enough.
Do they have rear seats?

But the Targa does not struggle with this, and has Coupe seats. A win.
For £45K this seems like a good one (no affiliation to the seller)

Nice car, but neither of the two must haves, convertible or manual.

This will be a lot of car for the money.
A Boxster is not a 911 - not even close. A Boxster is comparable to a Z4, TT, SLK, 370z. A 911 is up against Aston Martins, SL, LC500.
With the OP’s budget I’d be looking at a gen 2 997 or a leggy 991.1, although prices for these cars seem to be on the up in the preferred spec.

I acknowledge that hence my reply. I feel for the money, for open top Porsche experience, they should reconsider matters.

Their main differentiator is the position of the engine and therefore the way they drive.
I personally can't stand the 911 lazy turn in and don't need the extra traction when finally balanced compared to how a mid engine changes direction but that's pretty subjective/personal.
Comparing a Boxster chassis to a Z4, TT, SLK or 370Z is a bit silly.

What’s your thoughts on this car. Fits the bill but 26 years old, looks like it has been well looked after.

That's quite different from your original ask, personally have a major problem with the front plate! Wouldn't buy 911 on auction unless you've inspected or had ppi, think many are dumped hiding issues. Low mileage hard to predict price, Max would be 20k I guess for this
Folk are sending you mint cars from dealers who always have a healthy margin in these cars. An auction or private purchase is different ball game. I bought privately 997 and niggling things failed that had I bought from dealer I would expect them to be done but overall I saved considerable money and enjoy the journey of doing it up gradually
As quoted try one out for size and consider how long you'll have it, my 12 yr olds cannot sit comfortably in back now of coupe now.....
I would be going the practical : Targa - bigger seats in rear than the Convertibles,

or if it has to be conv. something like

Not being argumentative, but why?
Mine is very fast (992 GTS), but on the road it’s utterly pointless and not hugely enjoyable. I’d say 350bhp is more than adequate if it’s just on the road.

I agree with you Crumpet. I've had some extremely quick cars (Murcielago, Ford GT, Vanquish etc) and I have to say I found them frustrating to drive as I could never exploit the performance. I have a 400bhp 911 these days and it's just about the sweet spot for me for driving in the UK and France - it can (of course) reach licence losing speeds, but it feels much more usable.
I am glad more powerful cars exist, but in the real world they're frustrating to drive along at legal speeds.

just feel like a sportscar should be a sportscar, things like 296 ferraris with 850hp etc have gone pointlessly far and things like an elise etc can be fun with less hp but overall there's kinda a minimum imo (drove several 'base' 911s and they felt underwhelming etc)

Fair enough. There’s a pleasure to be taken from knowing your car can do something, even if you don’t exploit it. I always liked knowing my Land Rovers could wade through 1m of water, even though the deepest they ever went was a few inches.
Weirdly, I never found my 630bhp Aston frustrating because you could enjoy the noise it made at low speed and the power delivery was lovely and linear. There was little to be gained from wringing it out. My 911 had been a very disappointing affair until I got it on track and could properly stretch its legs; it’s still hugely underwhelming on the road.

I would agree that if you can't go fast enough on the open road in a 300ps 911 then perhaps the problem isn't the car.
I would however question if that car is a very nice to drive.
