This is not a probability of success.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1Original post

I apologize if this has been asked and answered before, but I am relatively new to this and can't seem to figure out the search function. I just picked up a 2007 Boxster base that came with one key. I want to get a second key but am not really interested in work arounds or other ways of bypassing the dealer since I know I will need them to program the key, and they will only program a factory sourced key and fob. Are there any specific recommendations from where I can source a key and fob and key such that all my local dealer will have to do is program it? My local dealer wants $582 for the transmitter/fob, $353 for the replacement key, and another $185 or so for programming. Thanks!

POST 2Original post

My experience with all the upper-level car dealers is if you didn't buy it from us, we won't program the key

POST 3Original post

Replacing or creating a new key can definitely be a headache. I know because when I bought my 2008 Boxster it came with one key. I bought a new fob, ~$395, key blade, ~50 and took it to a shop that claimed they could do it. They had the license to contact Porsche in Germany to get the codes required to link the ‘pill’ in the transmitter/key fob to the transponder, immobilizer, DME , etc. (sample below) After an hour or two, even with those codes from Porsche HQ, they admitted failure. Called another shop who asked if I had all the codes from Porsche, which the other shop provided reluctantly, and with those codes and the fob and the key blade I had cut at a local locksmith, they were able to program the new fob to my vehicle with their shop programming tool no problem. All in, probably cost me about $600-700.

POST 5Original post

Has anyone tried carkeysexpress.com they seem to be a reasonable alternative, however I don’t know if they can dup a Porsche key

POST 6Original post

I just looked at their website, and Porsche is not on their list of brands.

POST 7Original post

Thanks to everyone for the replies, but I decided to cave in and just pay the local dealer. Probably could have saved a few dollars buying elsewhere, but I got the distinct impression that the local dealer would not have been happy programming someone else's key. Just on size-to-dollar basis, its probably the most expensive part I've ever bought! 2007 Boxster base MT 1996 993 C2 (gone but not forgotten)

Wait until you lose the grain-of-rice sized piece of plastic that goes into the ignition switch bezel (it covers the key-release hole)... about $25 with shipping/tax/itp.
