She drove as a Novice in the green run group, but I took her out a few times in the black run group as a passenger.

Today we go and test drive a good candidate Boxster S.

It was sounding complicated then I found out that there are testing requirements, and if we flunked the test we could be quarantined on one of the islands for 2 weeks.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok guys listen up. I am starting to feel the pressure from Valentine's Day for my wife, who has big expectations. It is coincidentally our anniversary. So I wanted to take her to St. Barts but the COVID risk and the risk of getting stranded is just too intimidating.
So I'm looking for some Porsche jewelry. Anyone have any ideas/sources?
Thanks
Rick
You could do the Homer Simpson bowling ball thing and buy her a companion 996 under the guise you will go on group drives together.
Honestly man I got nothing. I think Porsche Design makes watches but they are not the "same company" as Porsche AG.
I took my wife to Atlanta for Valentine 2016. We did the Master the Manual course. After that day at PCNA: museum/classic restoration facility, track and proving ground, simulator time, she said I could go to racing school. You can get her a Porsche key ring at the PCNA swag shop to match the sweet new 992 youre buying her that you had delivered there.
I have no info but, generally speaking, women do prefer Hermes (bags), Tiffany (Jewels) and Cartier (Jewels/watches) rather than Porsche related stuffs.
if I were her, I wouldnt switch a Saint Barth getaway for what you suggested. My two cents, of course 😀
This idea is getting traction. How do I figure out Boxsters? Do they have IMSBs to worry about. Looks like they have different engines. 2.0 L is a non starter. Looks like they have 2.7 L and on up. Most automatic, which is good.
Thoughts?
Thanks
Rick
A lot of this depends on what generation Boxster you are looking at. 986 Boxsters use smaller displacement M96 engines, so IMSB is still a concern. I would say 986 autos are more common than 996s, but around my parts I would say a solid 90% are manuals. Just like 911s though the newer you get the more likely they are to be autos, especially after 2009 (PDK).
This is a great idea. We haven't been to the Keys in at least 5 years, with COVID and all. We did Islamorada back in that time frame and stayed at a sleepy little hotel with detached units. We were in the off season so it was really quiet. Nice little restaurants. Great flights PVD to West Palm.....
This is my #2 plan, with Boxster on top right at the moment. I think she wants the Boxster but we need to go touch one once I understand the genre.
Thanks
Rick
Well...
GT3 seats are out of the equation. If she is under 5-2, pretty good chance she won't be able to see over the dash nor reach the instruments. Get one with electric adjustable seats. Had to build cushions for my wife and daughter when I put in GT3 seats.
Who doesn't want a Boxster? Just an all around fun car.
Momentum starting to build. We are going to look at one over in CT Monday or Tuesday. She can sit behind the wheel on our 996 and see ok but the clutch would be a bridge too far. She needs automatic. I just hope I'm not letting myself into more IMSB anxiety....
Same here. My wife is 5-1 and was able to adjust the Oem seat and steering wheel in the 996 to reach the pedals and see over the dash to drive the car just fine. But not with the GT3 seats. Don't see why the Booster would be any different.
The snow ball has started rolling down the hill.
I have about 5 good candidates within about 150 miles of my chair. Tomorrow we go look at the first candidate....
The guys over in the Boxster blog are telling me stay newer than 2009 and I don't need to have anxiety rushes about IMSB and other ugly happenings....
I would focus on the 987.1 base. My understanding is those M97.20 with the larger bearing and the smaller displacement had very few issues. If you find a .2 you like definitely go for it.
I have to agree with both of these statements. Especially a thorough PPI. 987s seem to be better than 986s, but there are a lot of turds out there. I think because it was hard for people to justify sinking more into maintenance than they paid for the car. That being said don't let it scare you off, there are plenty of good Boxsters out there at a good value. Hopefully, one the 5 works out and your wife enjoys her new ride!
Well, sir, you started this snowball rolling down the hill and I think it may hit the bottom of the slope tomorrow. We are looking at one today for form, fit, function. Tomorrow we see the one I think we will pick up. Silver like my 996, automatic, and 2 year unlimited warranty on everything. Nice to get her home before Valentine's/anniversary. Could be a great night.....
She is getting excited....!
Thank you once again....
Good luck with the purchase! In a few years I'll be doing the same for my wife and will be coming to you for advice on what to think about and look for. It's fun to get the wife involved.
Tough to see in my avatar picture, but that's my wife in the passenger seat on the track. That was the only day she went to the track with me. She wanted to see what it was about. She drove as a Novice in the green run group, but I took her out a few times in the black run group as a passenger. She handled the speed, braking and cornering forces well, not to mention the passing which can be pretty close and tight in the black group. She got a kick out of being strapped in tight with the harness and Hans by my race shop and appreciated the "dance" that develops on the track. But after doing it once, she has no interest in doing it again.
But, she does want to trade her convertible Audi in for a Boxster sometime in the next couple of years. Right now she still likes the back seat in the Audi.
Enjoy. We only live once. Better to do it with a Porsche!
I'd still go to St. Barts. In the last few months we've been all over the Caribbean with zero issues. (ie; Dominican Republic, Aruba, Curacau, Nassau, San Juan, St Kitts)
Oh, for sure. So much of COVID is hyped. St. Barts for us is a flight to Princess Juliana, then a ferry over to St.Barts. It was sounding complicated then I found out that there are testing requirements, and if we flunked the test we could be quarantined on one of the islands for 2 weeks. We go to Sandals also and at least they have a policy that if you become trapped like that they will extend your lodging at no coast. But just looking at potential of being quarantined outside the US for two weeks was looking very complicated on this end. Although any of these islands would be a inviting quarantine !
So, as you recommend, we will definitely get to St. Barts soon. I hear it is really a great trip. Our favorite so far is Antigua.
Thanks
We visited one yesterday and she fits in nicely, and she loves it !!!
Her only concern is backing up. Visibility not too good. Some of them have some sort of backing assist but if not, I'll just throw one in as I did with my 996.
Today we go and test drive a good candidate Boxster S.
Thanks
Get her a really nice spa day (massage, make over and some pampering) and then a nice dinner afterwards. Better travels days are ahead and don't rush the car purchase.
Roger that. We are planning to go to the PNA affair in Newport coming up. It is being held at Gurney's Newport. Good spa opportunities. We have gone to Gurney's Montauk many times in the past. And there, I have reaped the benefits of the spa day
.
Good thought, and I agree St. Barts will be there next winter...
Thanks
Rick
Ok, my friend, you started this ball rolling and here is the result. Today she drove this Boxster and she loved it.!!! She fit fine and the visibility forward was more than adequate for her. So....we will own this car ...2014 Boxster S next week. Our 996 is in the background. If you find your way to RI I owe you a good dinner, you and your wife, at a fine restaurant.
Thanks again, and thanks to all the guys who weighed in on this and encouraged me on the car and the travel.
Rick
Rick,
Congrats to you and your wife. The Boxster and your 996 look great. You guys will turn a few heads as you drive around town in your impressive hardware!
My wife is from NY and I am from Phila, so we get to the east coast quite a bit with family. Love RI in the summer! One of these days!
Good looking ragtop, Rick. Large quantities of Husband of the Year (HoTY) points to you. May she enjoy the car in good health. Hope she lets you drive it now and then.
Interesting comment.
Thank you for your good wishes.
I'm already seeing some ownership. She is starting to hint that the 911 is "our"car, and the Boxster is "her" car.Today on the return from MA on remote areas of rte 95 we touched 110 as a 911 Cabriolet wanted to play. And she said "...don't think you are driving "my" car like this..."
Then she said "...will my car do this ?"
I said "sure"
Oh-oh.
Rick
Will do. We used to sail over to Star Island Yacht club, and in the winter, spend some nights at Gurney's. But COVID has upset all those plans, then we sold the boat last Spring. I see maybe a Spring trip over on the ferry.
Will let you know.
Thanks
Rick
